View 6 RepliesLichen Sclerosus :: Low Sweet Intake
just been reading some of your comments and diet was mentioned, I try to have a healthy diet , don't eat a lot of spicy foods, I always buy fresh veg and only eat fruit like bananas that don't have much acid in. I must admit to having a sweet tooth and do like sweets and I have noticed more flare ups if I have lots of sugary foods. Try to keep my sweetie intake to a minimum which is hard because I think if you suffer from LS you need the occasional treat to cheer you up.. Maybe my fairly bland diet is helping to keep the LS stable

View 2 RepliesThyroid Disorders :: From A Sweet Taste To A Bitter Taste
(Background: Had an ear infection over the Summer that had me taking antibiotics, nose and ear drops. Put flea powder on my cat that went up my nose and caused a metal blood taste in my mouth. I stopped drinking well water because of it. A couple of months after the ear infection seemed to go away.) My sense of taste sent me to the doctor to begin with. If I ate certain foods my body felt sweat through my veins, burning almost. So I went off sugar thinking that was it. I had my blood tested and they said I was on the border of having thyroid. I took the synthroid medicine prescribed and had a really bad reaction, so they took me off of them. I haven't had any medication for 1 month and a half, but now my taste went from sugary to bitter. Like maybe I had ate too much cheese or something. Sometimes it feels like I have a lump of cream cheese in my stomach. I am waiting to go to a specialist about my thyroid, but I have my doubts about it. I think I might have a bacteria infection throughout my body. I did notice a bump on the roof of my mouth on the right side. Is this normal? Can someone please tell me what is going on? I have always been a worry wart, but I am not tired, I have a little difficulty going to sleep, and I lost 7 pounds since June.

View 1 RepliesDried Sugar Causing A Lot Of Fatigue
Have you ever heard about dried sugar causing a lot of fatigue etc the day after eating?
I hardly eat any sugar (if any at all really apart from proper fruit), however I do like nut and dried fruit bags as a snack.
However I find that the day after I eat a bag of these, I am very fatigued and crabby.
My diet consists of fruit, veg, whole wheat pastas, beans/legumes, nuts, weetabix, fish etc.
I don't even drink nowadays!
The dried fruit thing has been something I have questioned for a loooong time but no one has agreed with my view.
My thinking is that because I eat such a low sugar diet, my body is shocked when it is subjected to so much sugar in one sitting - hence a sort of comedown/hangover the next day.
Kidney Disease :: Elevated Sugar /AST / ALT
I have uric acid kidney stones and recently I had Ureteroscopy to remove one. Actually when they got in there they couldn't find it in the ureter as the CT scan had shown so we don't know what happened to it.
I'm disappointed that I had the stone as I had been on a low purine diet which includes very little meat (6oz a day).
After this bout, I tripled my efforts, stopped all sugar intake unless it was natural in foods, no added salt and meat 6oz or less 2 times a week only.
Several weeks followed since the Ureteroscopy and the extreme diet change and my eyesight changed where I could not see out of my contacts or glasses. In fact, my eyesight changed 3 steps for the better and had to get new eyeglasses and contacts.
I'm also now taking twice a day Urocit-K (potassium citrate).
I wanted to know a baseline for my sugar and potassium so they did bloodwork and sugar was 145 which doesn't sound right, it should be lower and in the 65-100 range. My eye doctor said my vision shift was consistent with lower blood sugar.
My AST was 64, should be 13-40 and my ALT was 70 which should be 7-52.
For one thing I'm wondering if having the blood tests about 4 weeks after the Ureteroscopy may have skewed the results of the blood test but also what caused the drastic eye change, it was quite an extreme diet change for sure and the eyesight has stabilized and I continue to stay on the diet. I've also lost about 25 pounds in the last few months on the low purine diet. I also drink lots of water, no soft drinks, only unsweat tea on occasion.
The last CT scan before starting the Urocit-K still showed kidney stones in my kidneys which I had been on the low purine diet and I have more than before I was on the diet which doesn't make sense.
All these changes doesn't add up. Why more kidney stones? Am I starving for no reason as I can't eat hardly anything on this extreme low purine diet? What's up with the vision change and elevated blood levels?
Stevia Cause The Same Insulin Spike As Sugar?
I am trying to eat and drink a lot healthier since I found out that I have too many of the smaller particles from my last bloodwork. I have really cut back on sugar-like NO more sodas (and that includes diet sodas with their chemical sugar-subs), no more coffee cakes, no more fast food, no white bread etc. My only real goal to to convert small particles to larger particles.
Does anyone know if Stevia is just as bad from an insulin-spike standpoint than regular sugar in the raw? I am hoping to hold onto my cup or two of coffee per day with one packet of Stevia. It shows zero calories-which that part doesn't matter so much......just wondering if it is better for you. I know all of the fake sugars that someone dreamed in a lab are bad for you.
If there is no advantage to Stevia-like I was told in the past that there is-I may as well stick with real sugar in the raw in a very limited amount.
I will say this (and I know this isn't the weight loss board) just dumping all sodas and pastries from my diet cause me to lose 5 pounds in 3 months. That surprised me.

View 2 RepliesDiet / Nutrition :: Sugar Feeds Inflammation
I started a food diary and just wondering if what I am learning is common.
I have been told that many of my ailments are from inflammation. Ankle, hip, knee, back etc. I was told to start taking care of my gut and it would fix the rest of my body.
Anyway step 1 was to create a food diary. So what I am learning is that very quickly (like within 5 - 10 minutes) of eating sugar, my pain sky rockets.
And after taking an anti-inflammatory pill my pain goes away very quickly, like 5-10 minutes.
Yes I know that sugar feeds inflammation and I should avoid it.
What I am wondering is the timing odd?
I would not have anticipated sugar or a medication to have that immediate of results.
During my life I have taken anti-inflammatory pills a few times and really never found them to do much. Until today.
Diverticula :: Wheat, Lactose, Sugar Intolerance

Thyroid :: Nature-throid With High Blood Sugar
I finally saw a naturopathic physician and she agreed that TSH levels over 4 were not good. So, she put me on a half tab of Nature throid to start. I see her again in a week.
This is my first time on meds and I'm just wondering what I should be looking for as far as results? If they work, is it like coming out of a fog or something? How long does it take to start to notice the effects?
I've been this way for as long as I can remember, so suddenly having energy or feeling perky or something like that would be really strange for me. I'm not expecting a miracle, but I can't say I'm not hoping for one.
I also have high blood sugar, so I'm supposed to cut things like beer and sugar, etc. out of my diet. She also thinks I have a dairy allergy, so I have to cut that out for a week to see how it goes. I note that Nature throid has lactose in it though... Weird.
Anyway, I'm just looking for some advice or guidance through the process.
She's a great doc and, I have to say, that actually having someone listen to my symptoms and BELIEVE me was dang near one of the best experiences of my life. I got all choked up when I left!
Oh, and meanwhile, I still haven't even received a call from my PCP's office regarding the blood tests I took over 3 weeks ago. Nice.
Weight Loss :: Sugar In Fruit Have A Negative Impact?
I have been dieting for 7 months with an hour a day at the gym. I have dropped 55 lbs. I have hit a major wall and don't know what the problem is. I started to really hard core track my food intake. I have a 13 year son and he was diagnosed with Type1 Diabetes September 2010 and it has been a struggle every since. As a mother, I get so scared because I seem to cant control his sugar. Lately he has been waking up to high readings, over 300, and I'm not sure why it gets that high. We have had problems in the past when he would sneak and eat chips and candy, the stuff that he knows he shouldn't be eating but he promises that he doesn't eat after dinner and is positive that he doesn't know why his sugar is high in the mornings.
