Ford Brakes/Suspension :: 2002 2WD Explorer - Thumping Noise When Accelerate
I have a 2002 explorer 2wd. I am trying to find an answer for this thumping noise as I accelerate. My first thought was a tire. I took them to be checked and had one replaced but all are good and less than 5k miles on them. I feel it in the pedals and in the steering wheel. The repetitive sound increasing with speed. I have, in the last 2 weeks, changed front rotors and pads with no difference in sound but good brakes now. And today replaced the drivers side upper ball joint and the front ds wheel hub assy. And no difference. What may be the problem?
View 1 RepliesPrius (2004-09) :: Thumping Noise While Brake Assist Pump Is Running
On our 2008 Prius, while the brake assist pump is running I get a steady thump-thump-thump-thump noise, as shown in the video below. If you put your foot on the brake the noise stops. The brakes operate fine and there are no warning lights on. What this might be? It's coming from the passenger side of the car, and oddly it's loudest under the car near the back seat. 86,000 miles on the car.
View 3 RepliesHonda - Cr-v :: Loud Thumping And Grinding Sound - Rear Brakes Rusted
In February 2014 I purchased a 2011 Honda CRV. I often travel and am gone for about a week. Every time I come back the rear brake are rusted. They have a loud thumping and grinding sound. I immediately took the car back to Honda dealership (2 time) both times they 'shaved' the roaters. I then contacted Honda headquarters to report the issue. They told me to deal with the dealership and take it to a local mechanic for other opinions. Car Talk will be my second opinion. Honda dealership told me that this is just the way it is. This is my third Honda, I have NOT had this problem before.
View 8 RepliesImpala - Chevrolet :: 2008 - Thumping And Clicking When In Park Or Brakes Engaged
I have the above mentioned car with 50876 miles. I noticed that the steering wheel causes a click in the suspension when turned left or right whether stationary or with the brakes engaged. Also I noticed a thump felt through the steering wheel while doing the same action. What could be causing it, I checked my power steering pump and the fluid is brownish-red in color and no leaks are visible either on the ground or around the pump. I also got under the car and there seems to be no leaky CV boots ( i had to look these up to know what they look like).
View 5 RepliesSonata I45 (YF - 2011+) :: Thumping From Rear Wheel Area Louder When Go Around Turns Or Apply Brakes
We have a 2013 Sonata. For a while now we have been hearing a thump-thump-thump from the back of the car. The thumping starts as soon as the car moves and it appears to come from the driver side.
We get the thumping in our parking lot, on local roads, on the highway - everywhere. The frequency of the thumping speeds up and slows down in lock step with road speed. The thumping doesn't get appreciably louder when we go around turns or when we apply the brakes. We feel no vibration through the brake pedal, or through the steering wheel, or through the seats or any other part of the car.
Six months ago we left the car with the dealer after taking the service advisor for a ride. He heard the noise but when examining the car they could not locate the source of it. They said the wheel bearings looked good, the tires looked good, the brake rotors looked good.
After that we replaced the old tires with new ones and had them installed and had the wheels and tires balanced at a shop that is known for doing this well. (They take care of a lot of SCCA weekend racers.) After all of that the thumping was still there, same as before.
Now the thumping is getting worse. We are planning to take the car back to the dealer to have them go over it again and start replacing parts to see if we can locate the source of the noise that way.
Prius C :: Grinding Noise And Had No Brakes
My mom has a c-3, today while she was out, pulled out of a parking lot at slow speed, went to stop at the traffic light and all she hear was a 'grinding' noise and had no brakes. Luckily she has thinking ability and used the parking brake to stop. She pulled off when able but then the brakes were fine. I'm a gen III driver.

Ok so my friends '06 automatic was making this horrible thumping noise. So I replaced the DR side axle assebly. Still thumping , so I replaced the the passenger side...STILL THUMPING!!! WTF I turn the wheel hard right or left I hear a 3-4 clicks when I back up. Wheel bearing? Unbalanced wheel? Broken engine mount?
View 4 RepliesTouareg :: Thumping Noise When Changing Gear
Experienced a thumping noise when changing gear (automatic gearing). FOr eg. when i change from P to R or even D, there's a thumping noise which i think comes from either the gearbox or the diff. either way, sometimes the thumping noise is there and some other times, its gone.
I've only done around 1500 kms since new and if there's no solution, i'll just take it to the dealer and get it diagnosed.

View 10 RepliesF Series :: 2004 - Thumping Noise While Braking
I have a 2004 Heritage Model F150 4x4 Manual Transmission V6
It started to make a thumping noise a while back when the brakes were applied hard, sounded like from the front end. I figured it was a warped rotor and/or bad pads or bad caliper bolts, the thumping and pulse seemed like that was what it was.
The front end was a mess. I ended up changing just about everything. CV axles both sides, one piece bearing/hubs, upper control arms, bushings, ball joints, tie rod ends, sway bar links, rotors, pads, calipers, hardware, maybe more things.
It all needed done, so no big deal, however the thumping while breaking is still there, it is getting worse and sounding more metallic. You can feel it in the steering wheel and under your feet. The drive shafts are very, very rusted, but seem to have no play in the u joints. I changed the back rotors, calipers, hardware and emergency brake parts and hardware a couple of years ago, they seem good. Taking it out of gear or pushing in the clutch or not pushing in the clutch seems to make no difference. You can go fast and let off the gas, no noise, you can aggressively downshift, no noise. Hit the brakes and you get a nice thump, thump, thump, like I said now it sounds even slightly metallic and getting worse.
I figure if nothing else before long something bad is going to happen and I will know what it is.
Elantra HD (2006-10) :: Thumping Road Noise
I took my 2010 Elantra to a shop to have a four wheel alignment done because my tires were showing unusual wear and I had the thumping road noise. My mechanic has a new computerized alignment system. He told me that my right rear wheel could not be aligned to factory specification because Hyundai did include a means to adjust by the amount needed. My car only has 63,000 miles on it.
I did some research and found that there are many people who are having the same problem with their Elantras. It causes excessive tire wear and that annoying thumping. Some shops have fixed the problem with non specific shims while Moog has come has come out with an adjustable arm that replaces one in the suspension so the camber can be adjusted.
I complained to Hyundai customer service about it and asked them why they made the rear end so it couldn't be aligned. They don't seem willing to admit that this is a chronic issue, possibly even a safety issue that needs to be addressed. So, I have to take my alignment readout to my dealer so they can look at and check the alignment problem for themselves which is most likely just a run around tactic.
Ford - F150 :: 1997 - Have Thumping Noise?
I have a 1997 F150 that has been making an odd noise (something new and different). It seems to be coming from the engine-ish area. It makes a hollow whooshing kind of noise, followed by a thump/thud that I can feel through the accelerator (think frighting off beat base drum living under the hood). It sounds like a very large valve of some kind closing. It does not do this all the time, and both times it has done it have been at low altitudes- might not mean anything but my truck doesn't seem to like low altitudes- it idles low there. It has done this twice now- once 2 or 3 times in a minute for about 50 miles and then it just stopped miracle!.
I added oil in the interim of that and I thought maybe that had worked- it was embarrassingly low- took 4 quarts to get it to read half way up the dipstick. I might have murdered my truck. It did it again when I was on a long trip, coming home. It only did it 4 or 5 times. My truck kindly listened to my desperate plea and hasn't made a peep since, which means I made it home but now I can't get my mechanic to have a clue. I tried that the first time and he said "hmm." That was incredibly useful. So do I need a new truck? I might be able to afford a 1998 model.
Prius (Gen 3) :: Electric Antenna Noise From Brakes
I hear a distinctive electric motor noise similar to the electric antenna noise in our 4Runner , almost always immediately after applying the brakes (no matter whether hard or soft). The noise lasts maybe one or two seconds.
View 17 RepliesPrius (Gen 2) :: Winding Up Noise In Brakes For Just Few Seconds?
I am a fairly new Prius owner. I have noticed that when I get on the brake, I will hear a sort of winding up noise, or a noise like a very small motor running for just a few seconds. It seems to happen every time I first get on the breaks when moving at a speed above 25 mph, and I can interrupt it if I take my foot off the brake. I kind of thought maybe it was something to do with the regen brake system, but I wanted to make sure it's not an indication of an issue.
View 5 RepliesPrius (2004-09) :: Delayed Tap Noise When Hit The Brakes
I believe this is where the noise is coming from. I get a delayed tap noise when I hit the brakes. If I lift my foot off the brake and hit it again I might not get the noise. It seems forward momentum is need to "reset" whatever is making the noise.
Also.... Right turns at 25 mphs I can hear a rhythmic woob woob woob.
Accept for the tap noise the woob woob woob is hard to hear unless I have a passenger, more so if the passenger is in the rear.
I can't run this Prius into a dealer like I can in the states. I've had this Prius in the Republic of Panama since 2007. They just started selling IV models. This is possibly the 1st Prius in Panama
I had the pads replaced about 25,000 miles ago. There's 106,000 miles on the car.
I step on the rear bumper and bounce the car. The suspension sees stiff/normal. I don't hear any that might be loose.
Prius V :: Knocking Noise When Brakes Pressed
I have Toyota Prius 2006 with about 58k miles. For the last 12-16 months I encounter the following problem: when I press brakes, I hear knocking noise. It doesn't happen every time, but when it does it only happens when I press the brakes. Once I brought my car to a Toyota dealer and waited for an hour until my car was taken for a service. Mechanic found no noise. I tried to produce this noise but my car didn't want to cooperate. I don't see any messages on a display screen. It happens with power on/off and pressed brakes. What the knock is and how to get rid of it?
View 2 RepliesWindstar :: 2002 - Intermittent Thumping Noise In Engine
My 02 Windstar has developed an intermittent thumping noise in the engine. A bit of history: She has been sitting for a few months because she was throwing a P303 code that I could not track down. Here in IL, you cannot renew your plates until you pass an emissions check, and you cannot pass the check if a code is stored.
Well, I got a warning ticket for expired plates, and I had my daughter's car as alternate transportation while she is in the Peace Corps, so I parked Mr. Breeze, intending to get to her on the weekend. Except for throwing the code and gas mileage being a bit down, she was running fine when I parked her.
Well, life happened, and I never seemed to be able to put the time aside, but now winter is coming and I don't want to subject her ride to the snow, so I made time and replaced the coil, plugs, and wires. But when I started her up, there is an intermittent thumping noise in the engine compartment.
I have double checked the wires, and I think I have them right. As I understand it, the right bank plug wires go on the coil towers 1,2,3. and the left bank wires go on the towers 6,5,4. Is that right?
I made a short video so you could hear it, but it is too big to upload, so here's a YouTube : [URL] .....
Caravan/Voyager :: 2005 - Thumping Noise At Very Low Speed
Dealer replaced rack,twice. Still thumping,they installed new struts and 4 sway bar links and bushings same thump still there. I unhooked swap bar links and tied them to brake line and backed it out is my shop and thump is still there and sounds like both sides. This van has 56,000 miles on it and the ball joints and control arms feel and look tight. Is there anything about how frame mounts that might cause this?
View 2 RepliesSubaru - Impreza :: 2003 - Thumping Noise When Turning
My 2003 Subaru (about 14 years old, 165K mi) started making a thumping/clicking noise only when I turn right. It had been going on for weeks when I finally I took it to the mechanic, and of course he couldn't hear a thing. He drove it in circles, took the wheel apart, checked an axle boot that he replaced on it last summer, checked the axle. He said that the brakes squeak, but everything is fine. He told me to keep driving it until it gets worse. Didn't charge me anything.
5 days later (today), the noise comes back. Only when I turn right. I also feel a faint vibration below my feet. I drove it to the train station to get to work, put on the parking brake like I always do, but noticed that there was a burning smell from the front end. When it was time to go home, I noticed that there was something funny about the brake pedal. I normally press the brake when I start the engine, and usually it gives. But this time, it didn't and acted like it was stuck. I took my foot off, pressed again, and it was fine. I had also released the parking brake. Driving home, the thumping noise was gone.
Typically, this noise is worse in the morning than it is later in the day when I go home. Can a loose parking brake cable contribute to a thumping noise when turning in one direction, or are these all unrelated problems? I am stumped. Are CV joint issues typically inconsistent like this?
