Lupus :: Systemic And Choking
I need to determine if lupus is the cause of a swallowing and choking problem I'm having. For the past year or so, whenever I get a cold or allergy congestion, I choke on the mucus. It's been getting progressively worse and last week it happened when we were on vacation and my husband had to get an ambulance to take me to the ER because I was choking and wheezing. They gave me 60 mg. of prednisone for a week, which my allergist adjusted to a lower dose, gave me an inhaler, oxygen and a breathing treatment. I'm also taking a heavy duty antibiotic for a sinus infection. The thing is, I've gotten colds and congestion all my life like anybody else, but I don't know of anyone else who chokes on the mucous. Then this morning I started to wonder if lupus and/or Sjogrens is the culprit and making my throat swollen. I'm going to ask my rheumy when I see him in Dec. but in the meantime I live in fear of getting another cold or allergy symptom. I just can't go through that again. It was the most frightening thing that's ever happened to me. I have been resisting an increase in my methotrexate, but if lupus is the problem, I will gladly up my dose. Does this sound familiar to any of you? Has your doctor told you lupus is affecting your throat?

Background: I am 66 years old and have suffered first attack in mid November 2015... I have been fairly active person and have done some triathlon in the past, so not being able to get out of the bed on my own was pretty shocking to me... It took about one month to diagnose PMR and I started medication (prednisone) at 15 mg/day mid December.
If there is an interest, I would like to post about the progress in recovery, with special attention to exercise. I am seeing specialist every 2 weeks and complete blood work is done to monitor inflammation caused by PMR.
I would like to post what I have done thus far and future progress in (hopefully) successful recovery.

View 2 RepliesEyes :: Squint From Birth - Eye Exercises
I am 29. I have squint from birth. I squint my right eye occasionally to focus far objects. I can see the near objects without squinting. I have 100% vision in both my eyes. In my childhood I had my one eye patched to strengthen the muscles. Also I had some eye therapy. Since I was a child I did not take the therapy seriously. So I still squint. I was thinking of getting a surgery to correct this. Now after reading these comments I have decided against getting a surgery and search the internet for some eye exercise.
View 1 RepliesAllowed Exercises And Movements After Microdiscectomy?
I had a microdiscectomy, L5-S1 on March 24th of this year. My recovery was terrible at first, possibly due to my waiting 5 months to have the surgery after 17 injections! Anyways, I was in fantastic shape before my injury. I would run a few days a week and do body strengthening exercises at home. At my 6 week checkup, my Dr. said basically all I can do is walk and swim. No squats, no crunches, no lunges. I don't have a pool or gym membership and I live in a state where it's getting to be unbearable to be outside! I'm getting depressed about my body. The pain meds have made me much lazier (and for a long time, hungrier!) although I am only taking them at night now. I have a pretty strict vegetarian, mostly vegan diet and I go to school for Dietetics so I know how to eat healthy, however I have gained a few pounds, although people tell me I look like I've lost weight. I don't feel comfortable in my clothes or own body for that matter. All of my lean muscle is gone and I feel squishy. It's bathing suit season here soon and I don't want to hide out all summer because of my insecurities. I just can't seem to get out of this sort of funk. I want to be able to be active and motivated again, it just seems like its taking forever! On another note, I am an exotic dancer. I have been dancing for 12 years now, I'm pretty sure that's how I ended up in this mess as I was very hard on my body, doing crazy upside down pole tricks and so on my Dr. gave me the ok to go back to work, but I am NOT allowed to do any of those moves I used to do, no tricks, no sudden twisting movements, no extreme bending. I have worked one shift so far, took it extremely easy and feel ok (although my legs were very sore the next day). I guess I'm going off here, but does anyone have any suggestions about any exercises I can't think of that I would be allowed to do? Can anyone relate to what I'm going through, or have any kind of advice at all? I feel so alone, and NO ONE understands the excruciating pain I've endured, sleepless nights and feeling so awful that I had wished at times I would not wake up. I already take antidepressants and benzodiazepines I am NOT willing to mess around with higher dosages (I plan to get off them after I graduate).

View 10 RepliesKnee Hurts After Grit Plyo Exercises - Can't Straighten It
I'm currently training for the army and my fitness level is so-so. I ran up and down hill, and then did Grit Plyo exercises. During Grit my knee felt sore, kind of a shooting pain. Afterwards it hurt like hell. Keeping it curled seems to make the pain go away but I can't fully extend it and I limp everywhere. I can't feel any swelling 24 hours later but there is inflammation (it's a bit stiff) I didn't hear any popping sounds and I rest it with a hot water bottle and some anti flammability pills three times a day. I've had achilles problems in the past if that's any help but I seem to get knee problems from going up and down hill, as last time I went uphill my knee hurt but I was able to rest on it. I went to a physio and within two weeks it was fine. I waited a month before getting back into high impact exercise and now this happens. Any advice please?
View 1 RepliesSevere Constipation (2 Years Old) - No Effect Of Goats Milk, Pre And Probiotics, Exercises And Massage
My son is 2yrs 2 months old and has suffered Constipation for 10 months ... it started when i went away for a weekend and he had his first weekend without breastmilk... 3 days late he was screaming in pain and had a stool stuck I was about to take him to hospital when in dropped enough for us to remove it,
the problem got more frequent over the coming weeks despite a lot of research on web tryin all kinda things increasing his fluids (which just made him wee more) and changing his diet (we tried more prunes, brown bread rice pastas, watermelon and watery fruits cutting out bananas and other foods) and he was prescribed Lactulose by the dr, whom told me it was just something toddlers get at this age, but it got worse as we weaned him onto cow's milk and the dr just increased his does of Lactulose over and over ... and saying would be 2 years until he would ref him to hospital.....OMG was my reaction, he passes stools most days but all are firm large and dry like rock the poor thing is in tears trying to pass them. his hanging of furniture like his in labour and there telling me this is normal at his age.......
so with yet more net research tried yet more diet changes no milk at all , goats milk, pre and probiotics, exercises, massage still to little or no effect
he now has senna from the dr too but the dr is still refusing to give him a ref, but my Hv has at least said there is a problem she thinks its "slow bowel" so currently trying to find out more on this as i am at my wits end and running out of things to try to relieve his pain its breaking my heart,
I know this is also now becoming psychological too and who can blame him when it hurts him so much, I am worried it will effect his happy go lucky nature being in pain for months on end. not to mention he starts preschool in nov and i am worried if this isn't sorted by then what i am going to do....

SLE, Raynaud's And Sjogren's Together
I have the SLE-Raynaud's-Sjogren's package of auto-immune illness (listed in the order of diagnosis). The Sjogren's is the latest and most burdensome flavor of the decade for me. I was diagnosed with it about 3 years ago but was probably suffering from it for several years prior before the symptoms persisted enough to result in a diagnosis. I guess that's typical. It was with the SLE and the Raynaud's.
I can't imagine it could get any worse, but I get the impression that I might be "early" in the cycle and that scares me. No tears, corneal erosions, no spit, heroic (expensive and painful) dental treatments to save teeth that may already be doomed, pain, fatigue. Little annoyances that by themselves are "nothing" all together its a spirit crusher. Can it possibly get worse?
Sjogren's And Vasculitis
I've noticed a few times that after standing relatively still for long periods of time (i.e. at a concert), the lower half of my legs is covered with a strange rash by the end of the evening. It's not itchy, not painful, but very visible. Of course, standing for long periods of time is painful on my joints, etc., but the rash itself isn't painful. With that though, my feet often feel strangely swollen and hot after lots of standing; that part is a little painful. I finally looked it up last night after it happening again and came upon something called "Vasculitis." I've made an appointment with a Rheumatologist to discuss further, but I'm curious to know if others have have experienced this. I generally ignore my symptoms and power through because I'm no fan of fussing, but this strikes me as a little stranger than dry eyes and creaky joints.

My rheumatologist is thinking about changing things around. But, I wanted to see if anyone else has had similar experiences; before I start messing with different medications.

View 1 RepliesSjogren's Syndrome :: Sea Buckthorn Oil?
Anybody tried it? I've just started. I'd been reading up on it on-line for some time. It's supposed to be the bee's knees for the whole sicca syndrome, and dry eyes in particular. As I was due to spend a few days in London last week, I debated getting some, but decided it was too expensive.
Then fate took a hand. As I haven't had dry eyes for months now, I didn't take my eye drops with me. That's the trouble with remissions - you forget you've got the wretched condition and get cocky! First night in the place where I stay it was a bit stuffy, so I turned on the air-conditioning for half an hour. One of those individual ones that blows air out fiercely however low you set it. I sat up in bed, facing it, watching the TV for just half an hour before going to sleep, but that was enough. I managed to get replacement eye drops the next morning, but now I'm in big trouble. Decided to invest in the sea buckthorn oil anyway, and have now been taking it for a week.
They say you're supposed to take four capsules a day for the first two weeks then cut down to two, but I'm being careful. Took one a day the first week, will start on two tomorrow and build up to four by the end of the month. I once had a terrifying experience on a low starter dose of Siberian ginseng. Just because something is "natural" doesn't mean it won't harm you!
Sea buckthorn is also said to be good for RA. The main ingredient is Omega 7, btw, but it also has Omega 3, 6 and 9 - though a different type of Omega 3 than fish oil. I'll be interested to see how that works out. I'm actually having an RA flare-up at the moment, but it seems to have peaked since I started my usual homeopathic treatment a few weeks ago. As I'm taking the oil alongside the homeopathic remedies, that will muddy the waters, of course. But I'll stay on the homeopathy for six months because it always works.
I hear you have to wait three months for Omega 7 to kick in, so I may be in for the long haul with the dry eyes. My right eye is already starting to bleed from a crack at the outer corner. We're having high winds here at the moment, which isn't helping things, particularly as my hips and knees have now improved enough to stand a 45-minute walk most days. I finally caved in today, and put on my wrap-around industrial goggles (provided by an optician in the UK). But I feel a right berk wearing them when walking around city streets - especially as it's not considered rude to stare in this country!
Relation Between Accutane And Sjogren's?
Is anyone aware of a linkage between isotretinoin (Accutane), used for treating cystic acne, and Sjogren's, which is linked to the epithelial cells? At 21, when Accutane first appeared, doses were higher than current (I remember my skin bleeding when scratching lightly with a fingernail). I am now 51, and have had Raynaud's for a number of years, and was just diagnosed with Sjogren's. Just curious if anyone has seen this?
