AVOID Trimethoprim - Causing Nausea, Burning Skin, Sleeplessness

My wife ( in her 60's) went to the NHS GP with cystitis and after a urine test, was prescribed Trimethoprim. Less than twenty four hours later she started to experience abdominal and back pain. She persisted with the Trimethoprim but the pain intensified.She said she had never felt so ill in her life and her skin was fiercely hot.We called NHS Direct and they questioned whether my wife had been to the gym, advised to drink plenty of water and to drink a particular fruit juice. She drank the juice and was almost immediately sick. Then, to help matters,the battery failed on my newly purchased thermometer.Later on Sunday night she felt really bad, couldn't sleep, couldn't drink , her body felt it was on fire and felt sick all the time. We then read the Trimethoprim leaflet that said these tablets should not be taken if there is a kidney complaint.I was on the verge of taking her diet to A&E at three o'clock in the morning.

First thing on Monday morning I got her to the surgery again and in spite of telling he receptionist how urgent the situation had become, we had to wait one and a half hours before having a consultation with ( another) doctor. By now the full urine analysis indicated a kidney disease against which Trimethoprim was ineffective and was given an alternative antibiotic - which (five days later) has now cleared the signs of the kidney problem. She has been ill for about two weeks, lost half a stone and can only eat small quantities of food - but at least she is eating again in small quantities.

After all this, I suggest the kidney infection developed very rapidly shortly after the first consultation and :cry: Trimethoprim failed to tackle that problem. Now the side effects of the Trimethoprim have only just subsided we realise that the constant nausea, burning skin, sleeplessness,

body aches were due to the Trimethoprim. Coupled with the kidney pain, it explains why she has never felt so ill in her life. We would never entertain taking Trimethoprim ever again.

Should you suffer the symptoms of cystitis, I would recommend the full nature and extent of the problem is diagnosed without a four day delay,

the correct antibiotic is taken, don't take the advice of NHS direct without a second opinion and avoid Trimethoprim.

Mirtazapine :: Should Avoid Alcohol?

I am on 45mg of Mirtazapine. I had quite a lot to drink on Saturday night and I know the info on the leaflet says avoid alcohol. I had a terrible day today with really low self esteem and suicidal thoughts. Has anyone else had similar experiences. I guess the answer is not to drink alcohol whilst on this medication.

Trimethoprim :: 28 Days Supply Of Trimethoprim. Should I Be Worried ?

I have been diagnosed with Chronic Prostatitis and prescribed a 28 day course of 200 mg Trimethoprim tablets along with 2.5mg of Oxybutynin for the same period. Started the treatment several days ago having taken 4 tablets of each drug.There are no immediate side effects apart from a slight dizzyness. Having read the posts about the bad reactions to this drug,it has given me great concern over the long period I have to take these tablets. Are there any other readers to this website who have taken this drug for the same period of about a month ?

Orlistat :: What To Eat And Avoid?

I'm fairly new to Orlistat having started beginning of october having not much luck on diets as I luuurve my food. But I had decided to go to my doctor and ask for help and she recommended I try these tablets.

I've struggled a couple of times trying to find the right foods but i'm slowly getting there i certainly have cut down on eating all the crap and stuff i love to eat but without totally having to give it all up by changing my fat/calorie intake. I have experienced the overload of fat once and it was not pretty lol, I will not be having a pizza for a while thats for sure. Its definitely a trial and error process just finding what foods work and wot doesn't for me and how much i can eat of it. I for one know these tablets are a god send as it stops me from having all those fatty lovely tasty foods that i know I shouldn't be eating and more of what i should be.

Diverticula Diet :: What To Eat And Avoid?

I have now had diverticular disease for the last 12 years and have a flare up every 6 months. I have apparently 6 pouches in my colon. I still do not know what foods to eat and to avoid. I have from my own experience stopped eating certain foods. I do not eat anything with seeds in ie some fruits have seeds so the only fruit I eat is melon pineapples bananas. The doctors say you should have a high fibre diet then they say do not eat seeds. I have just discovered that I should not be eating rice. How about baked beans should I eat these or not? Please could someone tell me as at the moment I am going mad not knowing what I should be doing.

Hemorrhoids :: Food To Eat And Avoid

I've sorta solved my bleeding hemorrhoid problem. I had the right idea with bulking up on fiber, but the wrong type. Whole flaxseeds and chia only worked 50% of the time. As I was purchasing anything with fiber, I happened across a POWDERED texture flax . Its when I finally got around to using that is when the bleeding STOPPED. I also take a psyllium seed husk supplement and eat fiber rich foods like shredded wheat, spinach, string beans, red potatoes, etc. I've also discovered other exotic fiber packed foods like dried japanese persimmon slices, that do a great job. Stool comes fast, bulky, and like a shotgun blast most times. Sometimes the stool is so bulky and wants to come out so fast that the hole isn't big enough, so I have to be patient and ease it out. So fast that the tissue is almost clean. An occasional small red streak or faded red spot on the tissue, but, dude, the entire toilet bowl was red before powdered flax . So I've made a complete 180 from tissues soaked in blood.

I'm elated that the hemorrhoids are under control. But with that being said, there's still a list of certain foods in the back of my mind that I know must be avoided...they seem to overpower the fiber plan and cause bleeding no matter what. I just ate that food that ONE time, that one day, but the bleeding may last several days to a week before suddenly stopping, and everything returns back to normal. Foods like this I've learned to avoid:

Orange Juice

Iced Tea

Coffee with cream and sugar

The lemon garlic dressing on Boston Market's Mediterranean Salad

These foods, especially, override my fiber plan to irritate whatever, and I can bleed for several days until it runs its course. Looking at it outwardly, these foods seem to have sugar and acidity as a common characteristic. BUT YET...I can consume other similar sweetened foods and NOTHING happens! The tissue is clean and bowl clear! I eat candies

Supraventricular Tachycardia :: Avoid Caffeine

I was diagnosed with SVT years back and have had 2 ablation ops with no success. Too near my AV node. Exercise is the main catalyst for an episode with myself(rapid heart,sweating,have to stop, feel faint) but have the odd flutter and increased heart rate at any time. However i have stopped drinking Caffeine and what a difference. I have not had any episodes whilst out running for about 3 months now( used to be every other run) and have confidence in entering 10k runs and completing them without having to stop. I am going to start playing squash again and really test out my hypothesis.Also, i am not noticing my heart jumping or bouncing during the day now. Just wanted to share this with others as stopping caffeine as really benefited me. I check all labels on soft drinks and obviously no coffee or tea.

Blood Thinners - Users Must Avoid Turmeric

Since being diagnosed with PMR Sept, 2014, I've tried to follow an anti-inflammatory diet as closely as possible. One of the things I've incorporated in my diet & take as a supplement is Turmeric. That word happened to catch my eye as I scanned our newspaper this morning and saw it mentioned in a medical help column. I read the question and answer and learned something I didn't know about Turmeric not being a good choice for people who take blood thinners. I thought I would share this with you as I've noticed many people on this forum mention that they are on Coumadin or warfarin.

Here's the text I read:

Blood thinner users must avoid turmeric

Q. I have a lot of arthritic pain, so when you mentioned turmeric for joint pain, I thought I would try it. In three days, my nose was bleeding. I take the anticoagulant, Coumadin, so I was concerned. My prothrombin time was sky-high.

I had to go off the blood thinner for five days to get back to normal. You should warn your readers about this interaction. Having your blood too thin can be extremely dangerous.

A. Thank you for the reminder that anyone on warfarin (Coumadin) or other anticoagulants should steer clear of turmeric or curcumin.

Although this spice has anti-inflammatory properties, it also can magnify the effect of these anti-clotting medications.

Prothrombin time is a measure of how long it takes blood to clot.

This interaction has not been well studied and is not found in the official prescribing information for warfarin. Nevertheless, you are not the first person to report a serious bleeding problem with this combination.
