Vitamins / Supplements :: Hashimoto's And Selenium
I've been struggling with my Hashimoto's diagnosis. I am actually "alright" at this present moment, but it was a long and rocky road. My Endo is not very informative at all and does not answer my questions. Last time I asked her about taking supplements. She stated she is biased because she practices Western medicine and won't comment on whether or not she thinks it's a good idea to take supplements.
I decided a little over a year ago, to take 200 mg Selenium as an added supplement, because I've been reading on here, that it will help with getting the antibodies down and I must say, I can tell a difference in how I feel today from before.
Now here is where I'm confused: my best friend since Kindergarten got diagnosed with Hashi's last year. She's really been having a hard time with it. Last time she saw her Endo, she asked the Selenium question. Her Endo said don't take it, because your risk of developing diabetes increases! That's something I've never heard about. So all day today I've been reading and researching this and I'm reading either it's so good to take when you have Hashi's and then some study they did that confirms my friends' Drs' point about the increased diabetes risk. Any thoughts?
Thyroid :: Selenium For A Month - Feeling Bit Shaky
So my doc said I was Vitamin D deficient and has put me on 5000 vitamin D3. Which is fine I've had to do that before. Then he suggested selenium which I got 200 because I couldn't find a 100 mcg of selenium. I've been on selenium for a month but I've been feeling a bit shaky. Can selenium do that? Some days I feel ok but a little nervous. My hands aren't shaky just feels like I'm shaky inside. Does that even make sense? LOL! I even started taking selenium every other day instead but I still have this feeling.
View 1 RepliesHyperthyroidism :: Selenium And Zinc For Overactive Thyroid?
This is my second time having an overactive thyroid in about 4.5 years. The first time I was totally new to it and had horrible symptoms and took a few trips to A&E for the doctors to diagnose me. This time around wasn't feeling great and said i would go get bloods done to check my thyroid, as hadnt gotten it checked in maybe 2 years! So the first time I had it I was living in a different city in Ireland so i was seeing a different Endo, which opted for Block and Replace treatment, which I found really good - was on this for 18 months and given the all clear. This time around I am seeing a different Endo who would not put me on the Block and Replace treatment, so am just on 20mg carbimazole now the last month and 10mg for a month before that. Still not feeling great, have good days and bad days, but I just remember feeling a lot better when doing the B&R. So i have started taking some supplements too, Omega 3, a multivitamin and a selenium & zinc tablet also, has anyone else ever tried the selenium and zinc that could share their experiences? Or any other supplements that has made an improvement on their health and wellbeing?
View 2 RepliesThyroid Disorders :: Using Iodine, Selenium, Sea Salt And Hashimoto's
I've read recently that iodine is not necessarily bad if you have hashi's. I found other articles that say too much iodine is the cause of many hashis cases. Nothing better than getting feedback from those that are living with hashish. My questions are:
Should I not be using regular iodized salt?
Will using uniodized sea salt be better than regular salt?
Do I need to be concerned at all with my salt/iodine intake as long as I'm taking 200 mg selenium now?
Are these articles about iodine mainly referring to iodine supplements and not what a person consumes through diet?
I understand hypothyroidism is not necessarily hashimoto's thyroiditis but quite frankly, my head is spinning right now. I don't want to aggravate my hashi's but on the other hand, maybe I'm overly concerned. BTW, I am currently not taking any thyroid medicine. Other than having difficulty losing weight.
Thyroid :: Supplements That Really Help?
A year or so ago I woke up with heart palpitations. My heart beat was very irregular and BP was high. Because I am a heart patient, I went to the ER. They checked me out and said the only thing they could find was that my TSH was 7.9 and to notify my PCP. I thought he would put me through more testing, but instead he prescribed 25 mcg. I started to feel better right away, but after a week I felt terrible again, so I stopped taking it. Then I felt fine. When I went back for bloodwork it was "normal." I told him I was no longer taking the meds, so he testing again in 3 months. It was a little higher, but still normal to him. My reading since then have been in the mid to high 3s. (TSH 3.2, 3.7) He says that's normal, but I still get symptoms sometimes. Other times, I'm fine. So if he tests at a time that I'm feeling fine, he will get a good reading. He says my reading would not be going up and down. Recently, I have been feeling very cold, low body temperature, with dry flaky skin and constipation in spite of taking a stool softener, puffy face. On my own, I started taking 1/2 of a 25mcg tablet I had leftover from when he had prescribed the synthroid. Now I feel great! Temp is back to normal, sleeping much better, normal bowels, and I've even lost a couple pounds! But I know he is getting tired of hearing me request thyroid tests when he feels they are normal.
Also, he says that TSH up to 5 is normal, but I've heard that anything over 3 is high.
I know that a lot of people have it way worse than this, but there is such a big difference in how I feel when I'm taking this tiny bit of med.
My question is, are there any supplements I can take that will really help? I see so many touted as helping with thyroid function, but I don't want to waste my money on something that isn't really going to help.

View 7 RepliesOrlistat :: What To Eat And Avoid?
I'm fairly new to Orlistat having started beginning of october having not much luck on diets as I luuurve my food. But I had decided to go to my doctor and ask for help and she recommended I try these tablets.
I've struggled a couple of times trying to find the right foods but i'm slowly getting there i certainly have cut down on eating all the crap and stuff i love to eat but without totally having to give it all up by changing my fat/calorie intake. I have experienced the overload of fat once and it was not pretty lol, I will not be having a pizza for a while thats for sure. Its definitely a trial and error process just finding what foods work and wot doesn't for me and how much i can eat of it. I for one know these tablets are a god send as it stops me from having all those fatty lovely tasty foods that i know I shouldn't be eating and more of what i should be.

View 4 RepliesMirtazapine :: Should Avoid Alcohol?
I am on 45mg of Mirtazapine. I had quite a lot to drink on Saturday night and I know the info on the leaflet says avoid alcohol. I had a terrible day today with really low self esteem and suicidal thoughts. Has anyone else had similar experiences. I guess the answer is not to drink alcohol whilst on this medication.
View 3 RepliesDiverticula Diet :: What To Eat And Avoid?
I have now had diverticular disease for the last 12 years and have a flare up every 6 months. I have apparently 6 pouches in my colon. I still do not know what foods to eat and to avoid. I have from my own experience stopped eating certain foods. I do not eat anything with seeds in ie some fruits have seeds so the only fruit I eat is melon pineapples bananas. The doctors say you should have a high fibre diet then they say do not eat seeds. I have just discovered that I should not be eating rice. How about baked beans should I eat these or not? Please could someone tell me as at the moment I am going mad not knowing what I should be doing.
View 36 RepliesHemorrhoids :: Food To Eat And Avoid
I've sorta solved my bleeding hemorrhoid problem. I had the right idea with bulking up on fiber, but the wrong type. Whole flaxseeds and chia only worked 50% of the time. As I was purchasing anything with fiber, I happened across a POWDERED texture flax . Its when I finally got around to using that is when the bleeding STOPPED. I also take a psyllium seed husk supplement and eat fiber rich foods like shredded wheat, spinach, string beans, red potatoes, etc. I've also discovered other exotic fiber packed foods like dried japanese persimmon slices, that do a great job. Stool comes fast, bulky, and like a shotgun blast most times. Sometimes the stool is so bulky and wants to come out so fast that the hole isn't big enough, so I have to be patient and ease it out. So fast that the tissue is almost clean. An occasional small red streak or faded red spot on the tissue, but, dude, the entire toilet bowl was red before powdered flax . So I've made a complete 180 from tissues soaked in blood.
I'm elated that the hemorrhoids are under control. But with that being said, there's still a list of certain foods in the back of my mind that I know must be avoided...they seem to overpower the fiber plan and cause bleeding no matter what. I just ate that food that ONE time, that one day, but the bleeding may last several days to a week before suddenly stopping, and everything returns back to normal. Foods like this I've learned to avoid:
Orange Juice
Iced Tea
Coffee with cream and sugar
The lemon garlic dressing on Boston Market's Mediterranean Salad
These foods, especially, override my fiber plan to irritate whatever, and I can bleed for several days until it runs its course. Looking at it outwardly, these foods seem to have sugar and acidity as a common characteristic. BUT YET...I can consume other similar sweetened foods and NOTHING happens! The tissue is clean and bowl clear! I eat candies
Thyroid :: Nodule - Homogeneous Appearance To The Echotexture Of The Thyroid Gland
I had an ultrasound today and it says that there is "a homogeneous appearance to the echotexture of the thyroid gland. Bilateral thyroid nodules are observed. There is evidence of a complex cystic and solid lower pole right thyroid nodule measuring 1.8 x 1.0 x 0.9 cm. Within the left thyroid lobe there is evidence of a hypoechoic midpole left thyroid nodule measuring 0.6 x 0.4 x 0.7 cm. Bilateral thyroid nodules. Dominant nodule is a complex cystic and solid lower pole right thyroid nodule measuring up to 1.8 cm. what does this mean?
View 1 RepliesSupraventricular Tachycardia :: Avoid Caffeine
I was diagnosed with SVT years back and have had 2 ablation ops with no success. Too near my AV node. Exercise is the main catalyst for an episode with myself(rapid heart, sweating, have to stop, feel faint) but have the odd flutter and increased heart rate at any time. However i have stopped drinking Caffeine and what a difference. I have not had any episodes whilst out running for about 3 months now( used to be every other run) and have confidence in entering 10k runs and completing them without having to stop. I am going to start playing squash again and really test out my hypothesis. Also, i am not noticing my heart jumping or bouncing during the day now. Just wanted to share this with others as stopping caffeine as really benefited me. I check all labels on soft drinks and obviously no coffee or tea.
