Thyroid :: Severe Pain And Tiredness After Parathyroid Surgery

I had parathyroid surgery 3 weeks ago, apparently i had a rare type of disease as my vit c and calcium were normal but pth off the scale, they removed 2 glands one had a tumour attached to it, so had lymph nodes removed to be sure it was all out, i now have severe hip pain in both hips and thigh bones and most days struggle to walk yet calcium is normal, awaiting lab results on the tumour, my concern is the severe pain and tiredness, any ideas ?

Thyroid :: Muscle Weakness After Surgery

Help! In 2001 I had a thyroidectomy. Immediately, my blood pressure, (which had always been remarkably low), shot through the ceiling and I've been on BP meds ever since. But I digress...

I was always super active. I skied, ran, kite boarded, hiked, biked... all a healthy and important part of my life. I even had booked a trip to climb Kilimanjaro for my 60th birthday in 2010 when I came down with Swine Flu, followed by a couple bouts of pneumonia. When I recovered, I tried to go back to skiing about three months later and found that I had lost muscle strength! I couldn't make turns (and that's a bad thing...) I got weaker and weaker. My doc had no clue. We checked heart, lungs. I was at low end of thyroid and adrenal levels, but "not a problem", I'm told. I'm not a drama person at all, but I really began to believe I was dying because I was getting weaker and felt like my energy was draining away.

At wit's end, I went (for the first time) to a brilliant naturopath who drastically improved my already good died and put my on Chinese meds. It took about three months, but I eventually stopped getting weaker and became stable. That was HUGE! Since, however, I've remained pretty stable and we keep trying other things but nothing has put me even close to where I was.

The best guess is that its related to thyroid or adrenal function. I dunno...

I can now make between 6-10 stairs before I have to stop for a few seconds to regroup. I can swim very short distances but never alone because when I run out of energy, its GONE and I have absolutely nothing left. This has drastically impacted my life and I want to be strong again!

Thyroid :: Diagnosed With Parathyroid Hyperplasia

Recently have FINALLY gotten a diagnosis of PARATHYROID HYPERPLASIA?…  After many years of fainting, blood pressure issues, kidney stones, ureteral stunting, a complete hysterectomy at 34 after ovarian cysts reoccurring….I had hoped it was HYPERPARATHYROIDISM…but my PTH wasn't high enough and the sestamibi and 3d scans and ultrasounds showed very thick glands? Does this sound like anything any of you have gone through or experienced, or should I be seeking another opinion?

Thyroid Disorders :: Elevated Parathyroid Hormone

My parathyroid hormone is 98.1 intact, the reference range is 14-72.  My calcium is 9.7, reference range is 8.7-10.4, my vitamin D level is 50, reference range 33-100.

My parathyroid hormone has been elevated for a couple of years now, but usually my vitamin D levels were a little low, so the doctors seem to think my parathyroid was elevated because of my vitamin D level. Now that both calcium and Vitamin D levels are normal my parathyroid hormone is still elevated.  Not sure if there is any correlation to why my parathyroid hormone is elevated, but I have multiple nodules on both left and right lobes of my thyroid. My left lobe has 3 nodules under 1 cm with one measuring 3.1 x 1.3 x 1.6 cm and my right lobe has one under 1 cm with the other 1.0 x 0.4 x 0.6 cm.

December 2013 I had a biopsy on the larger one on left lobe 3.1 cm and was benign.

I haven't been feeling well for more than two years now, doctors just tell me to see a psychiatrist, I am on a antidepressant but it really hasn't helped me that much.

Thyroid :: Raised Parathyroid And Calcium Levels - Low Vitamin D

I have had a raised parathyroid hormone blood result recently also a raised calcium in the blood result. I had raised calcium levels several years ago but after a scan of my parathyroid glands which showed no growths it was put down to lack of Vitamin D and called secondary parathyroidism

I was told to increase my Vitamin D levels which I did and my calcium level dropped. I have continued on the supplementation. I have severe sleep problems, am tired and grumpy, my hypothyroidism been under control for the last 8 years. I am borderline diabetic. Almost 73 years old.

Thyroid :: Understanding Calcium And Parathyroid Hormone Level?

I'm a 44 year old female. Earlier this year I went to the doc with lethargy, aches and pains, headaches, Backache, feeling sick, amongst a heap of other basic symptoms for a menopause check to which it came back as positive but they also tested me for low vit d which came back as deficient so checked my parathyroid hormone which was elevated. My Calcium they said was fine so iv been treated with a high dose of vit d pills for three months. Recent testing has shown my Calcium is still stable but my parathyroid has increased further but the doctor said she will have to do and enquires as to what to do next as she expected my parathyroid to balance out but as it isn't I haven't a clue what that all means if my Calcium is ok as I know they are all linked. Is there any clues or experience you can offer as to what it all means.

Thyroid :: Parathyroid Tumour? Unbearable Body Aches

I am 48 years old and been suffering many years with pain all over my body, my hip pain is the worst, closely followed by shoulders, wrists and hands, then buttocks, more recently knees.  My history has been a bit of a nightmare - diagnosed first as fibromyalgia, then early RA, then back to fibro, abnormal antibodies (autoimmune disease).  Years ago I complained to my gp about mouth ulcers and was discovered I was low in vitamin D.  Two years ago I started suffering extreme head sweats and a few weeks ago I realised that I was still getting mouth ulcers even if I was just a few hours late taking my Calcium Vitamin D and told  my gp, adding that I was concerned that I was still low in vitamin D.  Blood tests revealed that I am, even though I never miss the tablets, get lots of outdoors when able, eat loads of fish, eggs etc.  So, doc thinks its a parathyroid tumour and according to the website the only 2 reasons you would have low vitamin D is 1- if you don't actually get any and 2 - you do have a tumour.  So its looking pretty much like this is the reason and I am guessing surgery will be necessary.  My concern is, my muscles and bones ache so much, I walk like a very old woman.

My life has really been mostly bed bound for the last few years with pain, having to use a stick a lot when I do go out - on good days I will be out as much as possible and walk as much as I can-yeah the consequences are usually the next day in bed, but I try to push it as much as I can.  I have put so many things on hold, work and social and missed out on so much.  Now, I am wondering - if and when this is sorted out, the tumour removed (if the doc is right and I do believe he is) will my aches and pains go?  Will I have a better quality of life?  If osteoporosis has set it - can it be reversed?  I have also noticed very recently things becoming much worse.  If I move my hand in a different way the pain is unbearable and feels like something has just broken - my index finger has started moving involuntary, kind of jumping - is this related to anything?

Weakness And Nausea 4 Months After Gallbladder Removal

Well it's been 4 months since I had the gallbladder removed on Tuesday and I'm no better. Still persistent nausea no appetite dry retching or sometimes vomiting in the morning and horrendous weakness. It's been the worst 4 months of my life. Waking up in the middle of the night every night with the nausea sometimes at 230am and can't go back to sleep. Some days it eases off by lunch time some days it doesn't. Have been in and out of hospital and have been told it's a side effect of the surgery and it's very rare. Have found other people who had gone through similar experiences and it can take 6-9 months to recover. Have posted on this before but got little feedback. Just posting again in case there's anyone this has happened to or that they may know of this happening to.

Thyroid :: Joint And Muscle Weakness?

I was diagnosed about 4 months ago with Hashimoto's. I'm on 75 mcg of Unithroid. I've started having extreme joint pain and my hands are always swollen. Some days it's a chore to walk up the stairs at work. The only time I feel really good is in the evening about 7pm. Any suggestions on what this could be? Who do I see for my joints to rule out other autoimmune disorders?

Carpal Tunnel :: Thenar Eminence - Muscle Weakness After CTS Surgery

I had Carpal Tunnel surgery on my left wrist at the same time as ulnar nerve transposition surgery. Both healing nicely. My symptoms were not severe but I did have muscle wastage of the thenar eminence on the left side and slight weakness of the grip muscles. My concern now is that the thumb muscle is completely useless; can't grip, bend, carry. Nothing.

Is this normal after 2 weeks? Please advise as having right wrist done in 4 weeks and obviously don't want the same effect on right hand!

Gallbladder Surgery :: Persistent Mild Dyspepsia, Mild Nausea And Appetite Loss

RECENT HISTORY

First, I am diabetic and have had a fairly normal healthy life except in the last two years where I gained 40 pounds, did not control my blood sugars well, and went off the rails. I have had a lot of issues this year, but to focus on my most recent issues, I had a A1c of 10.5 two month ago and went to 9.1 a month ago finally to 7.6 right before my single incision laparoscopic with robotic-assisted single-incision surgery to remove my infected gallbladder (Hida Scan 11% no gallstones). 6 month ago i started experiencing a lot of bloating, indigestion and took charcocaps that helped a lot after meals.

Two weeks ago I went out for a cup of iced coffee (huge coffee drinker 3-4 cups a day for a long time no problems for years), and something hit me, it felt like a sharp pain and instant feeling of bleh no appetite and sick feeling the rest of the day. This continued for a week before I knew something was wrong, I could not have anything acidic or felt like I could eat anything. I had just seen my doctor for a bike accident a month prior to get a referral to a PT and osteopathic doctor. I had a l3/l4 compressed nerve with a twisted sacral (this is much better now with some minor spasms in my right leg from time to time). With all of that pain (took hydrocodone and muscle relaxants to sleep, sleep was poor) and school, I figured I must have given myself an Ulcer. My doctor game me a ppi-omeprazole (i've never had reflux and didn't then) since I had symptoms of some burning sensations and this chronic dyspepsia so this would treat the possible Ulcer for two weeks while I was sent for an ultrasound to check out my gallbladder (family history - Mom, aunt, and uncle had their's out with gallstones). The ppi sort of helped but I just was fatigued, could not eat anything but a bland diet, I had chronic dyspepsia and general nausea that I could never shake. My daily caloric intake decreased with each new day and food just made me generally feel sick, however if I skipped meals it would still be bad, worse with food.

TEST RESULTS
After the Hida scan came back positive with an ejection rate of 11%, I scheduled my new a1c test, ekg (family history of heart disease), I was cleared and scheduled for surgery. I stopped taking the ppi as I believed this to be the cause of all my problems. btw, I was 254 the end of june and lost 25 pounds by the time of surgery (average daily caloric intake ~900-1200 prior to surgery

POST SURGERY

After the surgery 7/21-one week ago, I had my two days of pain and adjustment, and recovered decently with a soft food and liquid diet. I noticed the general sickness was gone! Hazzah!, except on Saturday I was feeling bloated, cramping, and I could not eat a solid one bite without feeling sick. I knew I was constipated. I stopped the pain meds the day before and I knew I had not eaten too much but it was over a week since i went. I took magnesium citrate and nothing after 7 hours, I drank another 1/2--then BOOM it was insane. I was sooo wiped out and tried to replace lost liquids but I believe I was dehydrated. I was sick that night and stomach was not happy.

Sunday was much better but I was wiped out still and felt generally just depleted of all my energy. I ate, walked a bit and then came back home. That night I started feeling very uncomfortable and the symptoms were somewhat similar to prior to surgery of the general dyspepsia and nausea chronically. I could not sleep because of my back problems (had to sleep upright on my back all week). I woke up in the middle of the night turned to my side and then all of a sudden I felt a warm rush of something just above my stomach and the constant burn in my stomach no reflux. I could not sleep until the morning.

NOW,
I have had really bad gas (low fat diet) for the past few days. I was getting and feeling better on day four but now this!

I felt extreme discomfort all day, felt like a low grade fever 98.6 (no fever) incision site is also slightly red, but the doctor said to call if I had a fever. I was worried about an SSI. The pain was like I threw up (I never have even starting out back in at the coffee shop) and that ache afterwards. The burning sensation let up later in the day after I took some antacids and saltines (I must have some acid issues, but I have read a lot of people suspecting many people may actually have low acid).

The thing is a lot of people have episodes after food, but mine is chronic with mild discomfort, burning sensations, upper abdomen and stomach discomfort (with some nausea), and food helps it initially and then it comes back. I feel week, slight low grade fever even though I don't have one. I keep thinking I have an infection of H. Pylori or something. Food takes a while to do much, I walk after I eat everything. I feel like I could eat but I get so much bloating and indigestion that it is uncomfortable. I drink plenty of water, but I wonder if I am low on essential things for the long ongoing low calorie daily diet. I can't eat more then 800 calories even with smaller meals-since Thursday.

Why was my gall bladder inflamed in the first place? I had no stones, and the surgeon said I had a very long a big gallbladder (ready to rupture!) that was really inflamed including a little on the liver. Pathology reports came back negative. I theorize my rapid change in weight and blood sugar levels inflamed the organ or an infection.

Possibilities:

diabetic Gastroparesis
H. Pylori
Peptic Ulcer (was never officially tested)
Gastritis
Anxiety
Low/High Stomach Acid
Low bile leak?
Sphincter of oddi dysfunction

What I feel could help:

HCL Betaine
Digestive Enzyme (Garden of life chewable vegetarian)
ppi (I would hate to take them unless I had to)
something to coat my stomach if I do have an ulcer to heal
ability to eat more so I can have more assimilated minerals, ect.
Anxiety med (first year i've had a lot of anxiety-mainly school related and upcoming wedding planning for next year
more tests!

My burning anxiety questions:

When will I get my appetite back?

(i really suspected my odds were decently good that I would get better after surgery, I had a great surgeon)

Did anyone have any of these chronic symptoms? Is it due to an infection or some issue with surgery?

Have some people eventually been able to eat what they wanted after a period of time?

How many had these excessive bloating, indigestion, nausea and general malaise through the day, worse a little while after food or between meals?
