Hip Replacement :: Day 12 Post Operative Update

I've felt really good the last couple of days. Been having decent sleeps now that I lie on my non op side with the pillow between my legs.

Had a shower yesterday by myself, the only thing I couldn't do was dry my feet and put DVT stocking back on my op side leg.

I Have been walking round the house on 1 crutch a lot more and can feel the movement getting better although I do still use 2 when I'm outside.

The swelling on my thigh seems to be decreasing now although I can't bend the leg very much as the thigh muscle is still very tender, tight and sore.

Meds are getting less use as well, bloody Fragmin injections are still doing my head in, only another 25 or so to do 💉.

All in all I'm feeling quite good.

Also got my 1st physio session on Tues 29th, not looking forward to that after all the comments on here. They seem to do more damage than good!

Ankle Microfracture 15 Days Post Operative

Surgery was 13DEC. Today is the 15th day post op for a right ankle arthroscopic debridement, microfracture, and lateral ligament Brostrom procedure.

Last night due my "support" person taking a "personal day" I took it upon my self to take out the trash. I had my first post op this past Monday and the stitches were removed. I'm suppose to be NWB for 6 weeks post op and as of Monday wearing my aircast 24/7 except for showering.

I'm now wondering if I screwed the microfracture up. There is no increase in pain or swelling.

Small background- My husband is my support person but he has decided that he wants a divorce and a social life. Since my surgery he has found it necessary to stay the night at a hotel for at least 4 nights and be gone all day. His response is that he isn't here to babysit me or sit with me 24/7. We have a 6 year old home on winter break as well. We are in Minnesota with no family close and of course it's the middle of winter.

Genitourinary Prolapse :: Post Operative Information?

I had my bladder repair just under 3 weeks ago and found these weeks to be a lot worse than when I had a repair 5 years ago. That was done with stitches, this has been a mesh repair. I think the shock of the op and being discharged too early,I think, has added to worry. I still feel smelly due to discharge or blood and worry when I open my bowels ( never been constipated before!) Felt really low and tearful this time as well. BUT...I have felt much better for the last 2 days and feel more positive...I feel for everyone on here. We really should be given more info when we leave hospital...

Conscious Sedation/ Midazolam (experiences) Advice?

I went for a root canal and tooth extraction at a sedation clinic due to my anxiety. I was informed in the paper work that I would be having 'conscious sedation', I guess this means they would give me something to relax my body. I arrived at the sedation clinic (consent forms signed) and was called into the room. There was no pre-surgery consultation, they took my forms and before I'd even had a chance to ask them to explain anything including the procedure they had already placed the IV into my vein. I don't remember much after that but I woke up about an hour into the operation awake, but paralyzed. I could hear the nurses gossiping and talking as if i weren't even in the room (this panicked me even more as I thought I was dead). I began to feel the pain and kept trying to go 'AH' 'AH' and move my leg and the nurse would just say, 'Are you bored?' and ignore me. I remember this 'consciousness' because I began to choke on this salty stuff and ended up swallowing it. I had no idea my eyes were going to be covered and when I woke up I had absolutely no idea where my partner was or what had just happened. I felt traumatised by the whole thing. The drug they were going to use was never stated in the paperwork so I rang up the next day to research it. They said it was midazolam. I don't care if i signed a consent form, I was never told when anything was happening and nothing was explained to me prior to the IV being inserted, leaving me in a total state of panic when i awoke.

Thyroid Lumpectomy Recovery Experiences?

I am having thyroid lumpectomy surgery two weeks from today, having my left lobe removed due to a growing non-cancerous (so far anyway) goiter. I'm not currently on  thyroid meds of any kind, just began to experience discomfort from the goiter size and am having it removed. I have not had it tested for cancer since November 2014 but I'm currently asymptomatic. I would have originally had this surgery in December 2015 but had to move it twice which is why I didn't have the goiter biopsied last Fall. I'm starting to get nervous about recovery (and everything really!!) as far as pain, how I'll feel, etc. Would love to hear anyone's experiences good, bad and ugly.

Achilles Tendon Surgery Blood Pooling - 7 Weeks Post Surgery

I am seven weeks post surgery for an Achilles' tendon rupture and still have intense pain from the blood pooling when I stand for even a minute to brush my teeth. After one minute I immediately have to lie down and elevate my leg otherwise it feels like it will explode. Has anyone else felt this 7 weeks post surgery?

I also can only bear minimum weight on the leg at this stage. At seven weeks does that sound normal? I had my tear at the connection to the heel and had haglund's deformity where part of my heel broke off. Anyone else have that and is minimal weight bearing at seven weeks normal for this type of tear.

Thyroid Cancer :: Radical Neck Dissection - 1 Week Post Op

I had another round of RAI in March as my Tg never went into the single digits after my first ablation 5/12.

I was in Irvine, CA to get neck fusion surgery at Hoag when an MRI showed a suspicous lymph node. That led to an US and a PET/CT. (obviously ACDF surgery on hold)

PET/CT showed about 5 lymph nodes consistent with metastatic disease, so the endo I saw in Irvine recommended neck dissection.

My sister had a great ENT in Vegas so I went there and had the surgery a week ago Friday. He was going to do a modified radical, but when he got in there he said my neck was "full of disease". He counted 8 black and hard lymph nodes and cleared out my entire right side.

I am waiting for the path report. Maybe cause of the holidays it is taking a while. I hate waiting!

I have since come to LA where my inlaws live and am going through the process of getting an appointment at the City of Hope. I do not want to get further treatment on Maui where I live. I need a little better level of care.

I'm kind of anxious as I feel I am in limbo land here. I've had the surgery, but I have had no follow up yet. No bloodwork, no nothing.

I know that when I finally get that appointment at CoH I will get the evaluation and perhaps further treatment I need.

Is it usual to have another RAI after a radical neck dissection? This surgeon said that my last round of RAI probably did not work because there was so much cancer in there.

Oh, I also have a small nodule on my lung. Haven't addressed that yet, and that kind of worries me as well.

Geez. Since dx last April of 2012 I have not had anything go well. The Endo thinks I may have the BRAF gene. I asked this surgeon to test for it and he said he didn't know if his hospital did that. I guess I'll find out when I see the path report and/or talk with the doc.

I am anxious about my next steps. I've been out of work now since Feb. 19th and my medical leave expires August 19. I am going to try to get an extension so I won't have to go on COBRA.

ENT :: Lip Numb - 6 Years Post Surgery

6 year ago, I split my lip down the middle and got about 3-5 dissolvable stitches. Since then, it hasn't caused much trouble, I just have quite a scar. However, in a recent encounter with my significant other, he bit my lip quite hard. There was no blood. However, since then, my lip has been kind of numb. It feels almost tingly. It has been over 24 hours. What could this be? What should I do?

Thyroid :: Muscle Weakness After Surgery

Help! In 2001 I had a thyroidectomy. Immediately, my blood pressure, (which had always been remarkably low), shot through the ceiling and I've been on BP meds ever since. But I digress...

I was always super active. I skied, ran, kite boarded, hiked, biked... all a healthy and important part of my life. I even had booked a trip to climb Kilimanjaro for my 60th birthday in 2010 when I came down with Swine Flu, followed by a couple bouts of pneumonia. When I recovered, I tried to go back to skiing about three months later and found that I had lost muscle strength! I couldn't make turns (and that's a bad thing...) I got weaker and weaker. My doc had no clue. We checked heart, lungs. I was at low end of thyroid and adrenal levels, but "not a problem", I'm told. I'm not a drama person at all, but I really began to believe I was dying because I was getting weaker and felt like my energy was draining away.

At wit's end, I went (for the first time) to a brilliant naturopath who drastically improved my already good died and put my on Chinese meds. It took about three months, but I eventually stopped getting weaker and became stable. That was HUGE! Since, however, I've remained pretty stable and we keep trying other things but nothing has put me even close to where I was.

The best guess is that its related to thyroid or adrenal function. I dunno...

I can now make between 6-10 stairs before I have to stop for a few seconds to regroup. I can swim very short distances but never alone because when I run out of energy, its GONE and I have absolutely nothing left. This has drastically impacted my life and I want to be strong again!

Hot Flashes When I Eat - Post Gallbladder Surgery

I had gallbladder surgery last Tuesday. I just cooked me some boneless/skinless chicken (half a chicken breast) and green beans. No fat. Why am I all of a sudden really hot. I get this way if I eat anything besides hardboiled eggs or almond nuts. I am only drinking water. Right now I am so hot it's unbearable and the temp in my apt. is under 70° F right now. Why do I have or get hot flashes? This not normal heat I get when I am in my period (I'm on my second period this month right now). I also suffer from PCOS and was told I have a fatty liver with some liver damage. I don't cook with any oil, butter, fat, etc. I just hate to be overheated and uncomfortable. Please help and let me know if this is normal Or should I be worried/seek medical help.

Hemorrhoids :: 2 Days - Post THD Surgery Experience

I have just had 3 hemorrhoids worked on by THD surgery. This was done Thursday (and Saturday). I am on 2 sachets a day of movicol to soften stools but have not passed anything yet. I am eating fruit and little bit of other stuff such as digestive biscuits a little bit of bread etc. is there anything else I can do to help? When is pushing straining? I tried to go earlier and worryingly passed a jelly like lump of something?

The pain is manageable with occasional paracetamol or ibuprofen.

Spinal Surgery :: Post Lumbar Laminectomy

I am a 50 year old female who had lumbar laminectomy at L3/4 eight weeks ago for lumbar stenosis and spondylolisthesis. The surgeon also performed a dynamic stabilisation at this level. As I understand it, this involves the insertion of a flexible and rod and screws, similar to fusion but allowing more flexion at this level while at the same time preventing the vertebra from slipping. Prior to surgery, I was unable to walk or stand for more than 5 - 10 minutes without becoming uncomfortable because of weakness in my legs and a tight cramping sensation in my buttocks. Surgery has relieved me of these symptoms, but I now have aching in my lower back, groins and hips when standing or walking for more than 5 - 10 minutes. I wasn't given any physio follow-up after discharge from hospital, but have had a couple of sessions with a private physiotherapist. She seems to think that these pains are due to the ligaments and muscles having to stretch as my spine as been realigned and my pelvis is now tilted forwards instead of backwards as it was before. Has anyone else experienced similar pains and if so, how long did it take for them to resolve? I am also very stiff first thing in the morning and when getting up from a sitting position. I do not have any pain when sitting or lying down.
