Menopause :: Magnesium Supplements To Help Insomnia / Restlessness?

I've been reading a lot of ladies posts about insomnia and restlessness at bedtime.  I'm murder:  my legs seem to have a mind of their own, they're all over the place!

I think I probably sleep better some nights than I imagine. But I suppose as I can sometimes get up for a wee up to 5 times a night at certain times of the month, I deem 2 trips to the bathroom in the night a good kip!

Well someone suggested Magnesium Citrate to help with insomnia.  I did a little Google research and found it could be good for a myriad of my Peri symptoms, not least the restless legs and bouts of insomnia.

My husband and son are pretty fit and go to the gym 4 times a week. Both have had occasional bouts of cramp and now my ol' man has a problem just above his achilles tendon area (hoping its a torn muscle above).

Well, my point here is that it would appear that Magnesium may help them with their problems too!

I'm taking Menopace Original for B&D Vits.  Notice it has 100mg of Magnesium too.  I read that women's RDA for Magnesium is 350mg, so I'll supplement my Menopace dose with the tablets I got today.

Oh, and before I forget, it also talks about helping digestive transit, which is great seeing as most every month I change my name to Mrs Constipated.  At this rate I'll be swinging from the chandelier in no time!!

I'll report back in a week or so to give it time to work - or not. Be nice to hear from anyone else who's had good results with Magnesium.

Menopause :: Insomnia Due To Magnesium Supplement In Perimenopause

I have been using magnesium and calcium for a while now, they work well together.. However i switched to calcium and Vit D ( Natecal ) chewable ..

no longer having the magnesium ...

then i started effervescant magnesium ... i always take this by dropping in a glass of water, they range from lemon - orange flavour etc..

what I want to share is, as I have been an insomniac all through peri etc, I have  found that the effervescant form of magnesium, that you fizz and drink has totally relaxed me before sleep, i find myself in a lovely relaxed mood, and ready for slumber ...

Since this little difference, i have been researching magnesium and it also helps, tightened muscles, headaches, aches and pains..

worth a try ugh ? Drink it 30 mins before you go to bed ...

Magnesium has many benefits to good health, one of them being its action as an effective natural sleep aid.  James F. Balch, M.D., author of Prescription for Nutritional Healing, writes: “A lack of the nutrients magnesium and calcium will cause you to wake up after a few hours and not be able to return to sleep.”

Chronic insomnia that occurs with frequent night time awakenings is one of the main symptoms of magnesium deficiency.

On the other hand, a high magnesium diet has been found to be associated with deeper, less interrupted sleep. This was proven in a study done by James Penland at the Human Nutrition Research Center in North Dakota.

Mildred Seelig, M.D., the leading medical researcher on magnesium says: “Many people needlessly suffer pain – including fibromyalgia, migraines and muscle cramps – because they don’t get enough magnesium.”

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center web site, inadequate magnesium also appears to reduce serotonin levels in the brain.

One study found that magnesium was just as effective as an antidepressant drug in treating depression.  In addition, researchers at Stockholm’s Karolinska Institute reported that for every 100 milligram increase in magnesium intake, the risk of developing type-2 diabetes decreased by 15 per cent.

Other studies have shown that people with migraine headaches have low concentrations of magnesium in their body.

i intend to post more magnesium finding as i find them

this I totally second this info above as I really noticed a difference after taking effervescent magnesium before bed , and my curiosity lead me to find out more ..

Menopause :: Period - One Year Post-menopause

Three weeks ago, to my great surprise, I started to bleed after one year. The 2-3 weeks preceding this, my breasts were so sore, I was bloated and I has the typical "stringy" discharge that I used to get before my period. I was really not expecting another period but the bleeding was heavy and lasted for just over a week.

I saw my doctor a few days ago and she that she is obliged to send me for an ultrasound and possible biopsy if the lining looks thick. She said she is not worried but I am freaking out.

Can anyone share a similar experience? I read on one website that it is actually possible to ovulate and have a period after you stop menstruating for a year. I have not had any spotting - just this one "period". Of course, everything I have read says how abnormal it is to bleed after menopause and now I'm scared that there is something serious going on. My ultrasound is booked for two days from now.

Anxiety :: Cause You Insomnia ?

Does anyone deal with insomnia induced by your anxiety?  I have horrible insomnia (can't fall asleep and can't stay asleep).  I know anxiety and insomnia go hand in hand, but I'm not certain if my insomnia is a direct result of my anxiety.

What ways do you deal with this?  I was recently prescribed sleeping pills by my doctor, but those are even hit or miss as far as helping me sleep.  Does anyone have any tried and true remedies that they use or have found to be helpful?

Fluoxetine :: Flu And Prozac Insomnia

I am really struggling with sleep at the moment .... i am finding that i get off ok, but then wake up at around 3 am and then find it really hard to drift off again.

I went to the GP this morning as the lack of sleep is really affecting me - I can't concentrate, my memory is shocking and I feel so lethargic. I did wonder if it was my depression but the doc explained that I have 'Prozac Insomnia'. Great, I thought - I'm not imagining this! I had hoped that she might prescribe me something to help me sleep - but no, i came away with some leaflets and the ever welcomed suggestion to 'hang on in there'.

I have been on Flu for about 5 weeks and although i do feel slightly better, this not sleeping is knocking me back. Feel like all my progress has been undone and I'm at my wits end ....

Vitamin D :: Intake Causes Insomnia ?

I started taking cod liver oil and coconut oil supplements as of last week, but after taking them I couldn't sleep. I'm going on 5 days of not sleeping. I took the recommended dose at night and I noticed on the bottle that it has alot of energy in it. I stopped taking them 6 days ago but I still can't sleep good. I'll be lucky if I can get more than 4 hr. What can I do please? I never had sleeping problems until now.

Teenager With Chronic Insomnia

I've had difficulty falling asleep since I was a teenager (27 now), but over the years the problem has only gotten worse.

To put it as simply as possible: No matter how tired I am during the day, I am never tired or sleepy by the time I have to go to bed.I believe this is partly a case of DSPD (delayed sleep-phase disorder), because I do tend to fall asleep faster if I stay up until well past midnight. The problem is I have to get up at 8AM and there is no way to get around this (I own an independant store that opens at 9AM).

I am not stressed out when I go to bed or thinking/worrying too much, I am simply not tired. If I go to bed at 10PM it feels like I am trying to sleep in the middle of the afternoon. I ted to fall asleep between 12-12.30 at night which is around 1 to 1,5 hours later than I would like to fall asleep.

Going to bed earlier has almost no influence on when I fall afsleep: For example if I go to bed at 10PM I'd fall asleep at 11.45, while if I go to bed at 11.15 I'd fall asleep at midnight. 30 minutes of laying awake is the minimum though and I consider that a REALLY good night.

To make matters worse, I am a competitive athlete which makes a good restful night's sleep all the more necessary. This is also why I have stubbornly only used a few types of sleep medication, because it is EXTREMELY important that my reflexes/focus is not impaired the next morning, which is a side effect of nearly all sleeping aids. What I've tried:

1mg lormetazepam: Slept fine but did not feel rested and felt groggy the next day

3mg melatonin: Had no influence on falling asleep and woke up in the middle of the night way too energized like it was the middle of the afternoon.

Passiflora extract: no effect

ZMA: no effect.

The bottom line is: I sleep 6-7 hours a night, I only feel rested after 9-10 hours, and no matter what I try, I can't seem to fall asleep quicker, or even be tired when it's time to go to bed.

Drugs For Anxiety Insomnia And Depression ?

I asked my doc for trazodone today for my insomnia, he gave me a script for ten zopiclone instead, he said trazodone was not a good drug for depression, and that lexapro ( he has me on 30 mg ) is a far superior drug, I pointed out to him that I have been on 30 mg for over a year and while my depression is very manageable, my insomnia and anxiety have not improved and that in my opinion anxiety has always been my primary issue. I take inderal 80 mg daily for anxiety , which just makes it bearable. Has anyone on any different combination of drugs for anxiety insomnia and depression that they find works. Yes I know we're all different ! I have been on sooo many antidepressants, and I can't honestly recommend any of them.

Mirtazapine :: Low Dose Of Olanzapine For Insomnia

I'm guessing you've tried the usual suspects, zopiclone, temazepam etc etc

When my insomnia got so bad I couldn't even function any more, my psychiatrist tried me on a low dose of olanzapine. It did help me. It is also a pig to get off though... There are no easy solutions I'm afraid. CBT did help me too, but I had to really work at it.

Insomnia :: Standard Medicines Have Failed?

I have a complex dx including:ischemic heart disease, cardiomyopathy, congestive heart failure, CAD, ICD implant, renal failure, epilepsy, diabetes, neuropathy and c-spine injury.I am 38. I am med compliant and see all of my specialists and PCP regularly. After my first MI at age 27 I developed insomnia. We did sleep studies and tried many medications. Eventually we found Seroquel to work. I started at 100 mg PRN and was up to 300 mg PRN @HS. I slept well. Actually had to crawl to bed to pass out. I feel I am addicted to this drug. I am down to 25mg at night which gives me 3 hours of sleep. With my medical dx sleep is important but I also believe taking less medication with less side effects is equally important. Seroquel has cardiac and neurological side effects. My team agrees it is time to stop the Seroquel but we have no strategy. How can I wean off from this medication and still sleep?
