Santa FE SM (2001-06) :: 2004 2.4L - Whirring / Whining Upon Acceleration Whenever AC Running
For about 3 years, our SF (about 125,000 miles) has experienced the whirring/whining upon acceleration whenever the AC was running. I didn't do anything about this as the AC still worked well.
Just a few days ago, while running the AC for a "recharge" during our recent cooler weather, I realized that the AC was not cooling below outside ambient temperature, nor was the whirring present any more. I assume that the compressor finally seized. (?)
To keep repair costs low, and based upon the description above, where should I begin to look to see where the problem lies? Is it most likely a seized compressor/clutch? I am unsure if this is the issue, since even when driving with the AC turned to "Max", I now notice NO detrimental effects upon the engine/power output, which makes me wonder if the compressor actually seized. Wouldn't a seized compressor actually be very hard for the belt to turn, or possibly burn the belt?
I know the compressors and AC systems on these cars are notorious for dying too soon...
Santa FE SM (2001-06) :: Warm Engine Stalls
Have a problem with my Santa Fe. 2004 2.4l.
My wife drove the car when the problem first appeared. She had been driving for 30 min, roughly 30km, and the car looses power and stops. Won't start when she tries. It cranks but won't fire up. When she waits for a minute it fires up but stalls.
We took it to a workshop. No code. They changed the fuel filter, which hadn't been changed for a long time.
They took it for a drive and it worked fine. I picked it up and it was working. Then it died when I exited the highway. It had lost some power during a second while still on the highway. I had driven it for roughly 30km and the engine was hot. Again, was able to start it it up for a couple of seconds if I let it cool for a couple of minutes. Got a lift home and returned in the evening and it started on the first try.
Took it to work the next morning. Wouldn't start in the afternoon when it had been standing in the sun and was gazing hot. Opened the fuel cap to release any vacuum. No change. Again started when I returned this morning and it wasn't very hot.
The engine warning lamp hasn't light up. Will try to see if there is a fault code tomorrow. Will try to measure the fuel pressure eventually.
The valve position sensor and timing belt was changed a year ago.
Santa FE SM (2001-06) :: 2004 - Whining Noise After Running For A Long Ride
For about a year now my 04 santa fe whines after running for a long ride. We can never get it to do it to bring to dealership to have them look at since it only does it after long rides. We have had the power steering and transmission flushed and that worked a little while during the fall and winter but now that the weather is getting warmer it started again. What this could be?
View 1 RepliesSanta FE SM (2001-06) :: 2004 - Whining Noise From Power Steering Pump
I have a 04 santa fe , which slowly started whining which was diagnosed a power steering pump, when replaced the problem got worse and it became very hard to steer. Steering rack was the next diagnosis, replaced and another new pump. Now its so hard to steer and the whining has returned. Looking in the reservoir the fluid seems to be moving good with no bubbles??
View 3 RepliesSanta FE SM (2001-06) :: Whining Almost Electric Motor Like Sound Coming From Rear Of Engine
I have an 03 Santa Fe, 2.7 l AWD. Recently I've begun to notice a whining almost electric motor like sound coming from the rear of the engine. It get more noticeable the longer the trip. The weird thing is that it seems to respond to throttle input more than speed. If I'm cruising at say 65 I can ease off the throttle, reapply the throttle enough to increase RPM but not speed and hear it. I've had the differential, brakes, bearings checked. My mechanic has had it in the air 4 times and has spent atleast 4 hours on two occasions trying to find it. He can hear it. My thoughts are that it could be the Fuel Pump, or the exhaust.

I have a 2004 Toureg with approximately 31000 miles. Initially the noise Whining/ Squealing - sounds like a bad belt - would occur at approximately 40 mph and continue through the drive but if I dropped down to 30-35 mph it would stop. This would happen sporadically. Now it is occuring about every time I drive. I have had it in the VW Dealer twice and they are unable to detect the problem .
View 14 RepliesGolf/GTI VI :: Whining / Howling Noise From Vents In 2nd Gear
Have an issue with 2nd gear? Specifically, driving around at say 2-3k RPM around a slow driving area and have a howling. whining noise come from the vents/engine bay area. Its strange cause this only happens in 2nd gear, no other gear at the 2-3k rpm range makes this noise.
At first I thought it was the HPFP, but when I brought it in a VW tech he heard nothing. But its pretty freaking obvious with or without windows up and no music playing.
Should I take this into another dealership to get this checked out? Or is it normal.
FYI I do have a Injen Intake installed.
Buick - LeSabre :: 1999 - Howling / Whining Noise
I hear a noise that sounds like a bad wheel bearing when I hit 68 mph, and it gets worse when I go faster. I've had both bearings replaced, but still hear the noise. It is directly related to speed...the faster I go beyond 68 mph the worse it gets.
View 19 RepliesPrius (2004-09) :: 2007 - Engine Noise Occur Upon Acceleration
I have a 2007 Prius with 136,500 miles on it. Love this car. Getting 53.3mpg currently. A while ago I started noticing a strange sound coming from the passenger side of the car where the engine is. Recently the sound has become more pronounced and it has me stumped. The noise occurs upon acceleration, but not all of the time. If the battery is at 2 purple bars and I accelerate, the noise is very noticeable. But once I get to cruise speed it goes away. Again, this is sometimes and not all the time. Hopefully it's nothing, but I figured I would post this incase something is on the verge of failing so I may catch it in time.
View 7 RepliesBmw - 325 :: Whining Or Slight Howling Sound At 60 Mph When Touch Accelerator To Apply Power
I have had 2 cars with exactly the same problem. The first was a 1998 Volovo V70XC. And the second is my current 2003 BMW 325Xi - both AWD. When driving say on a freeway at 60 mph and you touch the accelerator to apply power, you get a whining or slight howling sound. As soon as you lift, the sound disappears, but each time you touch the pedal, the sound reappears. It seems to be coming from the driveline toward the mid to rear of the car. As you accelerate to 65-70 or decelerate to 55-50, the phenomenon disappears. What is causing this and how can it be fixed?
View 6 RepliesSanta FE SM (2001-06) :: Won't Turn Over / Whining Sound When Tried To Start
I have a 2001 Santa Fe with around 140,000 miles on it. I've had my share of problems with it, but the last couple of years have been fine until this morning. I tried to start it and appeared to have full battery power, but it would not turn over. Instead of a clicking sound, it was more of a whining sound it made while it tried to start. I took the battery into AutoZone and they told me it was dead, so I bought a new one and replaced it after cleaning the connector cables. The same thing is still happening with the new battery. I've attempted to jump it as well.
View 3 RepliesSanta FE SM (2001-06) :: Whining Noise After Extensive Driving
My girlfriend has a 2005 Sante Fe 2.7L v6 AWD. Lately I've been noticing it more and more but when the car is driven for a good amount of time we hear a noise. I'd say maybe an hour or so (I've never measured it though) the car makes a whining noise when trying to turn the wheel or even accelerating. I feel some resistance in the wheel when it happens too but majority of the noise comes from turning the wheel. Also when this happens the car seems to want to pull to the right, i can feel the wheel starting to pull. If I let the car rest and cool down for like 20 minutes or so it will go away but then slowly come back. From what Ive been reading I think I can narrow this down to a power steering fluid issue, either its low, leaking or the screen in the bottle is clogged. I don't see any leaks, nothing pouring out the bottom of the car either.
View 11 RepliesSanta FE SM (2001-06) :: Whining Noise When Vehicle Is Traveling
What is probably a common Santa Fe issue. I have a 2005 V6 2.7L model which has traveled 81,000 miles (131,000km). The power steering is and has been working fine, but over recent week has developed 2 symptoms :
a) The reservoir overflows (see pic)
b) There is a whining noise when the vehicle is traveling and when turning the sounds modifies to more of pressure-release type sound. When the vehicle is stationary, the noise is very evident when turning the steering wheel (See video here : Power steering noise - YouTube )
Other things to report are that the reservoir is full but has not needed a top-up for months. The power steering pump appears to be leak free. I have a slow drip from the rack & opinion area (detected at Hyundai first service - about a few drips per day and they decided it didn't warrant fixing)
I have read on this forum the issue may be related to the reservoir filter becoming blocked and this ties in with the fact the rack and pinion has a known drip leak, but I never need to top-up the reservoir.
Santa FE SM (2001-06) :: 2003 - Jerks Occasionally When Try To Gain Speed
2003 hyundai santa fe 2.4l ... When driving on highway speeds of 65 miles hour, I take foot of the accelerator and I put it back on to gain speed , it starts jerking or bagging. Also in the city when I press accelerator seems to have no power. I have no codes or check engine light on, what could it be?
View 2 RepliesSanta FE SM (2001-06) :: Whining Sound That Increases / Decreases With Speed
I have a problem with my 2006 Sante Fe. When driving (at all speeds) my SF has developed a "cyclical", repetitive whining sound in the engine compartment that directly corresponds with the speed of the car. The "revolutions" of the sound are slow at slow speeds and very high pitched and fast at high speeds.
It happens at all speeds, with or without throttle being applied. I do NOT hear it when the car is in park or in neutral and I rev the engine so it has something to do with the rotations of the wheels/axles/drive shaft/gears or something that rotates in synch with how fast the car is going. I still hear it when coasting.
We recently put on new tires a few months back and I thought maybe it was just the sound of the new tread on the road but now I am almost positive this sound is coming from somewhere in the engine compartment. It is possible that it is coming from under the car but the problem is a can't confirm that because I only hear the sound when the car is moving. So far, it's just an annoying sound, it does not affect the performance of the car.
Santa FE SM (2001-06) :: Drive Shaft Failure / Whining Sound
So I own a 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe GLS 2.7. I am the fourth owner and currently there is 168k miles on the vehicle. I purchased the car with around 110k miles on it and have had it for nearly 5 years now.
Aside from general maintenance I have never had a single issue with it, until last weekend. On the way back home from a road trip I began to notice a whining sound, and then very abruptly the car shook and I lost control of the vehicle and had to pull over on the shoulder. I was on the highway and was VERY fortunate to not have gotten into an accident.
After inspecting carefully I discovered my 4WD Drive Shaft was literally hanging by a thread. The knuckles were ruined, and in the process my Transfer Case and Exhaust System were all severely damaged.
Santa FE SM (2001-06) :: 2002 2.4L - Timing Belt Whining Noise?
I just installed a new timing belt, balance belt, idler, and both tensioner pulleys but am getting a little whine. I adjusted the balance belt but the noise does not change. No other belts or items are hooked up yet this was a dry run. Car seems to run fine and idles well. The hydraulic unit seems to be working fine and it's a OEM Hyundai piece.
Anything common I can look for that should stand out? 2002 Santa Fe 2.4L
Santa FE SM (2001-06) :: Whining Noise In The Right Front When Turning Left And Accelerating
2005 3.5L 105K. I had the timing belt replaced at 70K. Ever since then I get a winning noise in the right front when turning left and accelerating. Does not happen turning right. I took it into another dealer and he said it could be in the power steering. But why turning left and not right? He didn't think it was the CV joint.
I changed the PS reservoir in case it was a clogged screen. That did not work. Now I am getting a rattle sound on the right with the car in D or R when the car is first started, moving slow or not moving. The sound goes away in N. I don't know if these sounds are related or not. What could be causing these sounds?
Santa FE SM (2001-06) :: Cruise Control - Transmission Downshifts And Back Occasionally
I have a 2005 Sante Fe 2.7 4WD with 168K miles. Last week I'm driving at 45 mph with cruise control on and it just downshifted to 3rd and then back to 4th in about 3 seconds.
It did this on the highway at 55 as well. I used the manual shift option and it works perfectly. It still shifts smoothly in auto mode but around every 5 minutes or so it will downshift and back again.
Here's what I know.
1. Using automatic mode in Drive it shifts smoothly from a stop to speed but then downshifts and back occasionally. It does this with Cruise Control on and off.
2. Using the manual mode and shifting on my own works perfectly. Even when the cruise control is on it doesn't skip or downshift.
What it could be?
