Phaeton :: V8 - How Much Vibration At Idle
My V8 has been pretty much flawless for the last 25,000 miles that I have owned it. Currently has 67k miles.
One thing I've always noticed is a slight vibration at idle. Nothing too harsh, but certainly can feel it.
Am I spoiled by the Lexus, which sometimes I can't even tell if the engine is on?
Phaeton :: Vibration At Idle - Transmission Clunk When Going From R To D
My 2004 V8 transmission was recently replaced under warranty with a VW remanufactured unit. Since then, I have two issues.
The first thing is a vibration at idle. In neutral, the vibration is present, it feels cyclical. When I move the shifter to D, I get the same vibration but it's much stronger. At this point it no longer feels as if I'm sitting in a Phaeton.
Second problem is a clunk when going from R to D. This is intermittent. Sometimes it doesn't do it at all, most of the time there's a noticeable clunk, and occasionally there's a loud clunk that you can really feel.
I took it back and they said they checked all the mounts and couldn't find a problem. Now they say they don't know what else they can do. Should I insist on further work? Do the above symptoms suggest that the transmission might suffer an early failure??
Phaeton :: Vibration At Idle - Motor Mounts?
I am feeling more vibration at idle than I believe I've felt in the past. I can feel it in the seat more than I remember before. Granted, it's not like the car is shaking or anything, but I can feel it more than I think I should. Could this be the motor mounts?
View 6 RepliesPhaeton :: Vibration While Driving - TPMS Goes Off Every Time Start The Car
Car just hit 161,000km and all has been running well except for 1 nagging issue and 1 new one.First the nagging issue.
In January, I put on Continental DWS tires on the Phaeton and soon thereafter noticed a vibration in the car while driving. I could feel it in the steering wheel and could see the passenger headrest vibrating as well.
I saw some posts on these tires from other Phaeton owners saying that they also experienced some vibration, so that's what I thought it was.
At least that's what I thought until I went to the dealer for an oil change. I asked them to check wheel balancing and they told me at least 2 of the tires were way out of balance and they fixed it but there is still some vibration.
They did a test drive and said since the vibration is coming from the center of the car, it could be the driveshaft? They told me it's a problem with the Touregs but not with the Phaeton.
It's been killing an otherwise great ride for the last 6 months.
Also, I had my TPMS sensors replaced last year and it's been working great.
However last week, it went off, I clicked to reset and it reset with both rear tires and trunk showing OK. The front tires show a reading but instead of OK beside both, it's completely blank and the damn TPMS goes off every time I start the car.
Phaeton :: Vibration While Braking As It Rolls
It took me a while to realize it, but my Phaeton vibrates as it rolls. My wife and friend only noticed it when I called their attention to it, but I've come to pick up on it every time I drive the car, as shortly as a few blocks away from home, from about 30 MPH and upwards.
How do I know? Well, we have two other cars, including a Touareg and a smart, and those two sure do not vibrate the way the Phaeton does! My wife and I just pick up whatever car, so I am likely to drive two or three cars on any given week. I've tried to ignore it, but to me, every time I pick up the Phaeton, it is very bothersome to me.
I've put new tires on the car, had them "force balanced", the computer scores came out great, and the alignment technician at the VW dealership said he can't feel the car vibrate while we rode together. The rims are good and straight. But it clearly does vibrate.
By the way, the front suspension shudders very un-German-like in potholes. I speculate it is related. But I am dreading taking the car to the VW dealer service technician and have him come back that the car is fine.
Phaeton :: Slight Vibration Coming At Speeds Of 80 Kph
I have a slight vibration coming at speeds of 80kph and up that is driving me crazy. The steering wheel doesn"t shake so I am leaning more towards a rear of car issue. The center driveshaft and transmission were replaced and new tires{Conti Extreme Contact DW} Wheels are not bent. The car has 130,000 km"s. The vibe happens mostly when accelerating up freeway ramps. Once the car settles at highway speeds{100_120kph} it tends to reduce to a constant faint shake that you feel in the seats. Rear wheel bearings? CV joints? I am the only one who feels the shaking because I know how smooth a ride it used to be.

Has intermittent buzzing sensation through both the brake pedal and accelerator when at low speed or stationary? I drive a v10 diesel. I am aware of the normal vibration associated with a diesel (which is near non-existent in the Phaeton) but this is something very different.
View 23 RepliesPhaeton :: Brakes Replaced Now Getting Vibration In Steering Wheel
I got my Phaeton, certified pre-owned, at 23k miles. Until 45k the brakes were flawless. Steering felt solid, no vibration or feeling of shaking of any kind when the brakes were depressed.
At 45k, I got the telltale "squeak" while depressing the brakes. I took the car in, was recommended to replace all corners, pads and rotors. The replace brakes message did not appear but I was pretty sure it was coming.
So I performed the recommended service at my local, Phaeton certified, VW dealer.
Here I am, 4k miles later, I am getting a vibration in the wheel while pressing the brakes. It seems to have gotten worse from 3k to 4k post-service. Also I hear and feel a "rubbing" noise while reversing that seems to respond to the brake pedal. Almost as if the brakes are engaged while reversing even while I'm not pressing the pedal.
I've had several other cars with warped rotors and the vibration in the wheel would lead me to believe that may be the case here. In my other cars this has only gotten worse with time. So I am contemplating discussing with the service manager to see what can be done. I drive the Phaeton quite gently, not aggressive at all.
Phaeton :: Occasional Vibration When Coasting With Throttle Backed Off
I have an odd sort of occasional vibration in my 2004 W12. I've read the sticky FAQ info posts concerning vibration, but I can't find a report with the same symptoms. Here are the observations:
1. When present, the vibration comes in very mildly at 50 MPH and peaks at 65 MPH, then dropping to barely discernible at 85 MPH.
2. The car shudders under the vibration, at worst resonating interior items and can be felt through the seat.
3. The vibration ceases IMMEDIATELY at any speed when coasting with the throttle backed off.
4. Curiously, the vibration seems to be much more noticeable after about an hour's drive. Before that, not so much.
5. VAG-COM does not indicate any misfires... I was sure I have a bad coil/plug... but the controller shows no such evidence. The throttle-on shake feels like a miss.
6. Brakes on/off makes no difference.
7. Road surface does not make any difference.
8. Near new (2K miles) Yokohama YK 580 all around, stock rims. If it's balance, I doubt it would decrease at higher speed (being sub-critical). Likewise for belt bubbles or other tire flaws.
Some posts have pointed to worn suspension link bushings causing mechanical resonance at certain speed ranges, perhaps aggravated by engine torque on the mounts, so I'm leaning in that direction (bushing replacements) if nothing else comes to light.
Phaeton :: Small Vibration In Car From Right Hand Side At Certain Speeds
I get the above message in the center driver display. There is a small vibration in the car from the right hand side, at certain speeds, mainly when I turn to left, and also when accelerating hard from stand still.
The scan tells
address 34: level control
Part no: 3DO 907 553 A
Component: LUFTFDR.-CDC-3C1V0 1090
2 faults found
01577 turn off due to over temp
001 upper limit exceeded
01583 leak in system detected
0000 - -
Question is if I will create more damage If I use the car? The error message appears at start up and whenever I slow the car down towards stand still. It is not present when driving. I assume it is either a leak at one of the air suspensions or the air compressor.
Phaeton :: 2004 V8 AWD Pulsing Vibration On Highway Speed
Ever since the day I bought the car, it has had a highway speed pulsing vibration. This vibration manifests once you cross about 90kph, and pulses like a sine wave.
Think of it like this - OOOOOOooooooOOOOOOooooooOOOOOOooooooOOOOOO - where big O's are vibration and little o's are absence of vibration.
I have had the wheels and tires rebalanced several times on various machines over the years in attempts to rid myself of it. The original owner had theorized that the car was so heavy and had sat on its aftermarket rims in one spot for so long that the wheels had bent, which does not appear to be the case. The dealer has experienced the symptoms but cannot find a cause...though I fear they are less knowledgeable about the car than I am. I note that several people on the forum have had vibration issues due to drive shaft bushing failures...but in skimming the relevant threads, none of those people characterized it as a pulsation OR a constant issue that I saw.
I wouldn't say the pulsing was fast...think 4-5 seconds of vibration and then 4-5 seconds of peace.
Phaeton :: Slight Cyclic Vibration / Pedal Pressure On Braking
I had the discs replaced by VW UK & my VW garage a few months ago (V6 TDI) , car was close to 3 years and ~50K miles. There was a slight cyclic vibration/ pedal pressure on braking, not easy to detect, but from once you knew it was there it was annoying. I was not convinced the replacement was 100% successful, but it was not until I had 4 new tyres fitted and all rebalanced last week that I could clearly see that I still have the problem, maybe even worse than before the discs were replaced.
2 Queries
-Is there anything else that can cause the same brake pedal feel, other than a warped disc: a bend in a suspension component or the like? I query this as I bent an wheel last year in a huge pothole and wondered if this could have damaged something
-I have found a local company with an on-wheel disc skimming machine that I understand can be excellent to resolve these issues. Maybe this would be the way to go.
Phaeton :: Vibration Noise From Offside Front When Pulling Away From Slow

View 3 RepliesPhaeton :: Strong Vibration Developed After Tire Balancing And Wheel Alignment Done
I had my tires rotated about 2,500 miles ago with tire balancing and wheel alignment done. After this the car developed strong vibrations at between 55 and 65 mph. When the speed goes up or down from that range the shaking stops. If I am going at a speed higher than 65 mph and brake the car shudders until the speed is below the 55 to 65 range.
I had the VW dealer do another tire balance, but the problem persisted. I then went to a Goodyear tire outlet and had them do a tire balance and then another one about two weeks later. The problem is still there. The Goodyear people suggested running the car for a while and see if it improves. It has not about 2,000 miles later
The VW tech rode with me and said that it was warped rotors that caused the vibration, but if the rotors are warped, should this vibration also be felt for other speeds?
Phaeton :: Short Moment Howling Noise With Vibration Under Hard Acceleration
I just brought my6 Speed Automatic Transmission Phaeton V8 in, because under hard acceleration mostly between 3+4 or 5+6 for a short moment a howling noise with vibration into gear selector appears. I was able to demonstrated it to the Technician, but he said there is not much to do because no Fault code will show up and if he ask VW they will say he needs a reference vehicle to replicate it.
View 24 RepliesPhaeton :: Speaker Vibration From Rear Passenger Door / Rattle When Going Over Rough Spots
Have been to dealer multiple times with concerns about speaker vibration from rear passenger door and rattle when going over rough spots from same general area. They end up saying they have not heard anything and I end up feeling like I am losing my mind. Does seem to be worse some times than others. Last weekend I opened the door and tapped the area around the base speaker. Lo and behold, sounds like there is something loose in there. Seems like it is moving around freely at times and may be caught somewhere and thus quiet at other times. What might be in there? Any easy way of getting at it on my own?
View 24 RepliesPhaeton :: V8 - RPM At Idle In Park And Drive
What "normal" rpm should be for V8 idling? In my Phaeton I have 620-650rpm in Park position and when I press brake pedal and shift to Drive (or stop at the traffic light) rpm's goes down to ~520rpm. Moreover it goes down to ~500rpm when I turn on defrost of rear glass.
500-550rpm make an annoying vibrations of my car. I've observed it from 2 months. Could winter make this "phenomena" or it may be linked with replacement of generator on November? What is the normal rpm "level" at idle for Phaeton V8?
My mechanic told me there is no possibility to raise up rpm at idle in Phaeton. I asked him to do 750/650rpm (park/drive) but he says it is no possible. Rpm are regulated and controlled by ECU and no possibility to tune it. Is he right?
Phaeton :: RPM Drops Significantly While Steering When Idle
I am experiencing significant RPM drops when the car is at idle and I start to steer. feels like the engine is almost going to stall. I looked online it says maybe the IAC valve. where is such thing on phaeton?
