Passat (B5) :: Hot Smell In Engine Compartment With Smoke
Alright, my dad taken it to a mechanic, and guess what, it's still there. Only happens when the engine's warmed up. This is pretty much all I know, but it comes in through the a.c. and seems to come out of the engine compartment on the passengers side.
View 6 RepliesLincoln - Towncar :: Smoke Coming Out Of Vents / Sweet Smell Of Coolant From AC
I have a 2001 Lincoln Towncar (178,000 miles) with a heater core leak. I was on the highway and got some smoke out of the ac vents and ever since then I've smelled the sweet smell of coolant in the air coming from the AC. I haven't had any more smoke or vapor since the one time. I did my research and asked around and understand this to be the tell tale signs of a heater core leak and that it's one of those fun jobs that's going to be a high price tag at the shop because of the amount of labor (8-9 hours).
Since the dash has to come out, I thought it would be worth it to pay a little more and have a dealer do it since they'd be more accustomed to taking out and reinstalling that particular dash. So I describe the problem to the dealer over the phone and they want to diagnose it before giving me a quote on replacing the heater core. Why? No clue, I even asked the guy if there was any other possible way for coolant to get into the vents and he said not that he could think of.
Anyway, I took it into the dealer and low and behold they found a different coolant leak. It turns out for a while Ford used intake manifolds with a plastic part that is known to crack and leak coolant. The dealer wanted to replace the intake manifold and clear the condenser drain before we even got into for the heater core.
So here's where I get to my question. I ordered an intake manifold and replaced that myself, I still haven't addressed the heater core. The first puff of smoke and the coolant smell happened almost 5 months ago. I've been driving around with antifreeze in my trunk and my eye glued to the temp gauge and it has not budged at all. I started thinking if I could get through the winter months I'd just bypass the heater core and buy myself another 7-8 months where I don't need the heater and I could save up some cash to have a pro replace the heater core.
Now that the warmer weather is here, I'm left wondering--could the heater core really leak for 5 months without me ever having to add coolant and with the temp gauge never going above it's normal level?
Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: Exhaust Is Pouring Out White Smoke With A Sweet Smell
I have a 2003 F150 with a 4.6. Exhaust is pouring out white smoke with a sweet smell. I have replaced upper and lower intake gaskets. Compression test on all cylinders are at 145. Confused and don't know where to go from here.
View 1 RepliesPassat (B5) :: Sweet Smell When Car Barely Cranks Up?
My car has a misfire shown by autozone codes. I changed the spark plugs so that's not it. A couple of days ago i went to crank it, it wanted to crank. The rpm's were VERY low (didn't really completely crank up...more like a stutter), and there was this really strong SWEET smell that started from the car outside. Should I be looking at the fuel filter as the culprit?...exhaust system?
View 3 RepliesPassat (B5) :: No Heat / Sweet Smell Through Vents
I noticed a few months ago I wasn't getting much heat from my 99 Passat. I had the cooling system flushed and checked. Still no heat even after having all this done. Not long afterwords I started noticing that sweet smell through the vents, but couldn't find any leaks. I checked the expansion tank and it seemed to be slightly low so I added some coolant just to top it off and there it was. Steam started rolling up from the drivers side where the coolant had dripped on the exhaust and that's when I found the leak. I took the screws out that hold the tank to the bracket and discovered the leak coming from a short tube that appears to connect to nothing leaking coolant. Now here's my question, is the tank suppose to have a hole in it ? I thought it was suppose to be pressurized. What I don't figure is why didn't the shop notice it when they were refilling the system.

The part smoking is under the engine cover of the passenger side . it is a metal box with a plastic plug and looked to have "fins" the car also threw codes P301 and P2300. The car is a 2006 is this a coil.

I have a 2011 Elantra Limited. No nav. I really like it. But I often smell the sweet smell of hot anti freeze/coolant coming from the engine area. I see no visible signs of anything wrong. My past experiences with this smell usually indicated overheating or a leak.

View 1 RepliesPhaeton :: ESP Came On - Sweet Oil Smell?
Driving a few spirited miles across the moors today to pay dutiful respect to aged parents... as you do on Sundays.. probably fairly stung by inappropriate remarks on this forum about my driving, ESP and V6s.... when after having left a couple of midly sporty looking bicycles for dead on the Blackburn ring road I smelled a rather appalling smell... a sort of sweet hot oil smell. Seemed to be getting worse. However power delivery seemed OK still - no strange behaviour from the box.. or steering come to that.
Parked up carefully on my parents pristine drive... spent about 90 minutes with them sorting out their iPAD woes again.. and as I left scrutinized the drive for signs of any fluid that might be associated with the smell. But the drive was as clean as when I arrived. Came home - and gave it as much welly on the A56 road in the sky as fog and Sunday morons would allow... smell still strong, but performance pretty much what I'm used to.... ESP light not on at all of course.....
Get home (about 30 minute drive)... and start looking under the bonnet and under the car for the source of the depressing smell. Nothing. So.. maybe I'll scan it and see if anything's complaining. Went in the back to get the laptop (which I'd taken to my parents so that I'd have proper access to the interweb rather than via the silly iPAD thingy)... and found that a bottle of Miller's Diesel Ecomax -which some fool had persuaded me to try - was stuck under the driver's seat just where the heater for the rear passenger's feet discharges. The bottle was swolen and at about 30C... with a miasma of Ecomax emanating from the neck.
So, fairly relieved... and I've stopped looking. Moral - don't put bottles of anything on the back passenger floor unless you turn off the AC in the back!
Passat (B5) :: Blue Smoke On Startup
Most had said theirs did it intermittently and got better after awhile... Mine does it every single time. I start the car. Usually after sitting for the day at work or overnight at home... Not sure which direction to go with this (or rather my hubby) to go. What would be checked first? turbo, fuel injectors, and valve seals...
View 2 RepliesPassat (B5) :: 2001 TDI - Blue Smoke And No Power
I've got a 2001 passat tdi 130, awx engine, its got 213k on the clock and has been a great car for the last couple of years, over the last couple of weeks it has been down on power and is really smokey, blue smoke, it seems to be worse if its left idling for a while then give it a good rev up and it lets out a big cloud of blue smoke, it doesn't clear and is smokey all the time, I've not noticed any drop in oil level either which makes me think it may be injectors but it still runs ok with no diesel knock and starts first time, I don't want to be wasting any money on buying a turbo or injectors if it doesn't need it.
View 6 RepliesPassat (B5) :: Blue Smoke Blowing When Romp On W8
I may have an issue with my engine. My car is beginning to blow some blue smoke when I romp on it. It doesn't break up at all, there isn't any loss of power. It's just blowing some smoke and I noticed a light oil build up on my exhaust tips. I don't think I need to be hugely concerned yet, but I am bringing it to the dealership tomorrow just to make sure.
View 9 RepliesPassat (B5) :: Blue Smoke Coming Out Of The Exhaust
As the title states I have lots of blue smoke out the exhaust and the smell of burnt oil. Checking other posts it looks like it could be a diverter valve, a pcv valve or the Turbo. I checked on line and autozone and parts America say these are not required for my car. I checked my Hanes manual (yes, that's all I have) and they don't have the DV or the pcv listed.

Passat (B5) :: 2001 - Blue Smoke On The Exhaust
I own a 2001 Passat, engine code AVF, the problem is that I have blue smoke on the exhaust, lots of it. The turbocharger has been tested and has almost no play in the rotor, but I have tried to blow some air into the oil intake and the air flow is very low, I have to blow quite hard so some air can go through. I also get allot of smoke and oil from the Crankcase Ventilation Filter and also I could see some oil around the dipstick pipe.
Now I don't know if there is a turbocharger oil return pipe problem (maybe it is clogged), the turbocharger itself or maybe some other problem.
Passat (B5) :: Noticed A Puff Of Blue Smoke From The Exhaust
I was watching my wife drive off yesterday, and noticed a puff of blue smoke (oil) from the exhaust when she started moving.
This is a 2000 V6 passat. The car has a valve clatter when you first put a load on the engine that goes away quickly. I've read that this is likely the cam tensioners leaking down - is that right.

View 1 RepliesPassat (B5) :: 1998 - Blue Smoke Coming From Exhaust At Start-up Depending On Angle Of Parking?
1998 Passat 1.8T Sedan, Manual, 118k miles, new head at ~ 87k due to broken timing belt. (Changed oil approximately 1.5-2k miles ago, no loss of oil evident). No noticeable loss of power. No MIL and no DTCs in storage.
But there does seem to be a bit of exhaust (puff....puff.....puff...) that seems to be coming from under the turbo side of the engine, but it is hard to tell.
Recently - over the last couple of weeks - noticed at start-up in morning, significant amounts of blue smoke from exhaust - eventually subsides to nothing after a couple of minutes. BUT, it only seems to appear when the car is angled with its nose slightly up in the driveway and not with its nose down. Lack of it occurring with its nose down was only tried twice; I may need to check it again.
After reading many posts, I thought it might be:
1) Oil overfill at last change - I noticed that my oil was less than 1/16" above the top bend. I doubted that would be the problem, but I siphoned off the small bit and it is within or just below the bend now (hard to read). It might be the oil since I used the Valvoline full synthetic MaxLife that is VW approved for the first time, but I find that hard to believe since I have been using synthetic for a couple of years now.
2) Oil getting into the combustion chamber via oil in the turbo system. Checked the low spot in the hose just before the throttle body. Seemed virtually dry; that's not the problem.
3) I guess it could still be oil gathering some place due to the failure of the turbo, but power seems quite normal.
4) Problem potentially with the PCV (actually called the breather and bleeder valves) and/or vacuum system being plugged up. After reading all of the posts regarding that I am starting to think (HOPE) that is it and not the turbo. While I do understand that flapper valves that are stuck would create greater pressure which could result in oil being forced into the chamber past the valve seats, I am not sure why the angle of the car while parked would matter since the higher pressure would only be occurring while driving; and the blue smoke goes away after driving and doesn't appear until next morning. But perhaps I am missing something.
Particularly which valves I should check/clean if I am seeing this smoking exhaust at start-up, but only when the car is parked with the nose up?
5) Sticky valves at the back-side (cabin-side of the engine)?
Phaeton :: 2006 - Smoke Coming From Engine Compartment?
i have an 06 phaeton with 32 k miles . drove home with no problem at all, no engine shake, zippo. then i put my car in the garage and 10 minutes later smelled like a fire. i pulled my car out of the garage, and the yellow light was flashing and the engine rocking like crazy. shut it off in less than 10 seconds. under the hood, the front left spark plug cover and cable that runs across all four was almost completely melted. the cable was burned right thru. the black caps that cover the plugs-- the front right one only was melted severely. Do I have a blown engine...
