Passat (B6) :: Sound From Passenger Side Engine Compartment
I have a 2006 2.0t 6mt w/ 60k miles which I bought new. Ever since I can remember when I am stopped at stop lights or driving slowly (less than 10mph), i sometimes hear a knock knock knock coming from under the hood. It normally happens 8 times in a row, perfectly spaced (probably 1 thunk every second). It almost sounds like an electric valve or pump cycling/priming/purging. I would say that this 8 knock cycle happens just a few times a week. I have tried to capture the sound with my blackberry, but it is pretty quiet.

Alright, my dad taken it to a mechanic, and guess what, it's still there. Only happens when the engine's warmed up. This is pretty much all I know, but it comes in through the a.c. and seems to come out of the engine compartment on the passengers side.
View 6 RepliesPassat (B5) :: Blue Smoke In Engine Compartment With A Sweet Smell After A Long Drive
Occasionally I get blue smoke in the engine compartment with a sweet smell after a long drive. No malfunction lights, oil, brake, coolant, power steering fluids all are normal level. VW service doesn't have a clue, says just drive it until it breaks down. He also informed I should never use Tiptronic for braking since it could damage the transmission(we live in the mountains). What is it for anyway? We use Mobil 1 synthetic oil, and it is not overfilled. Car has 120k miles.
View 5 RepliesPrius (Gen 3) :: Passenger Side Engine Compartment Buzz At Mid To High RPM
When the RPM get to about 1/2 way on the engine side of the display to nearing the power indicator area there is a buzz emanating from the passenger side of the engine compartment. It sounds like a heat shield on the exhaust (that's a total guess, it sounds like flimsy metal).
It is not the hood prop. It only happens in that specific RPM range and it is when the engine is cold or hot. I will be able to replicate it for the tech at Toyota because it is constant. It has been constant for quite a while but since it only buzzes in that range I don't drive with a constant buzz just accelerate or decelerate through it.
Touareg :: Strange Noise From Passenger Side Engine Compartment
I have this strange noise coming from the engine compartment on the passenger side of my vehicle. Here are the characteristics of the sound:
1) Sounds a bit like a skipping tranny. Fast paced creaking type sound.
2) Only happens when coasting and the car is up to temperature. Meaning when I'm accelerating or braking the sound is not present.
BTW, the vehicle has 28k-29k miles and is 18 months old.
Toyota - RAV4 :: Medium Pitched Whirring Noise From Passenger Side Of Engine Compartment
So my girlfriends Toyota RAV4 (2005) is making a medium pitched whirring noise from the passenger side of the engine compartment. (Same area where the serpentine belt and the alternator and all those goods are located.) The battery warning light is on, solid. I have not had a chance to take my DMM and check voltage but I suspect this is going to be a bad alternator since it is a noise consistent with the RPM of the vehicle and visual inspection of the belt is that it is still in one piece, not frayed, flexible, etc. I didn't rev the engine because I didn't want to freak her (the gf) out. My plan is to test voltage before she does anything rash like take it to the dealership which she is already planning on doing but the noise concerns me since noises tend to come from things that move which is probably an indication of some sort of mechanical failure and that tends to cost money. Luckily it's her car.

My 2003 GTI 24V VR6 is leaking coolant pretty quickly from the passenger side of the engine compartment. I have a new water pump in hand. If I'm replacing the water pump, would it be smart to go ahead and order a thermostat and metal crack-pipe to replace at the same time that I'm having the water pump installed? I'd hate to get the water pump installed, and find out that the leak is at the crack pipe.

View 3 RepliesPassat (B5) :: Smell Of Smoke When Get Out Of Car And Oil Leaking From Front Passenger Side
I just recently bought a 2000 passat GLX V6. Once in a while i get to park my car in a garage and each time i have noticed that there is a smell of smoke when i get out of the car, (none in the cabin) kind of like a burning rubber almost. If I go on a long trip and then close the garage it actually fills up the garage with a whitish smoke. I put down some cardboard and found about 3 or 4 drops of oil up near the front of the car on the passenger side, checked the drain plug and its fine. I know that its not a lot at all but some leakage none the less.
View 12 RepliesCamry :: 02 - Smoke On Start Up - Leakage On Passenger Side Of Car Underneath The Engine
My girlfriends Camry (111K) just recently started leaking a dime size oil drip on the passenger side of the car underneath the engine. Every start up there's a decent size billow of blue/white smoke. Only thing visible under hood is the valve cover lower left size has a tiny bit of oil run down.
I read another thread similar to my issue and it sounds like valve stem seals leaking and burning? Could this be related to the leak in the driveway? What needs to be done and how serious is the billow of smoke?

View 3 RepliesPassat (B5) :: Front Passenger Compartment Water Leak Every Time It Rains
My VW mechanic and I have been working on and off over the past year to try and determine why my front passenger compartment gets flooded with water every time it rains. I've done some research determined it's not my sunroof drains (already clipped long ago) and it's nothing inside my engine bay (battery tray, underneath master cylinder). Those drains are clear.
Last night, we had another soaker and my front passenger compartment was more flooded than I've ever seen it. It looked like somebody dumped an entire bottle of water in there. However, this morning I noticed something different. I noticed a few drops of water leading down from just beneath the door speaker and into the front passenger carpet. I've circled on the following photo where I saw the drops of water:
When I opened the front passenger door, some water had built up and splashed out. I showed my mechanic this and he looked at my door. He used a screwdriver and started poking around up inside the drainage holes. 3-4 tiny pieces of broken glass fell out. My car had been broken into in 2009 and I had my front passenger door window replaced. These were the remnants of the old broken windshield. He kept poking around and knocking the door to try to get any other loose impediments out. Not much more than those 3-4 tiny pieces came out, though.
He suspected the door was filling up with water and overflowing into my car. I'm not sure if those few pieces could have caused that much water to back up. So I'm posting here to make sure I've covered all my bases. Could it possibly be anything else? We've checked the rest of the car out again in the usual suspect places (under the hood, beneath the car) and couldn't find anything. This leak is mind-boggling.

Passat (B5) :: 2004 V6 - Burning Oil Smell From Backside Of Engine On Passenger Side
I have an 04 2.8 v6 5spd. I have recently began smelling oil burning as in leaking on exhaust or something. There is no visible oil under the car, on the engine and no oil at all on ground even with car parked for days. It seems to be from the backside of the engine on passenger side. I am thinking a leaky valve cover gasket. I know a drop of oil will burn and smell strongly. I still want to fix it though. Should I just get a valve cover gasket kit and replace them. Its very hard to see back there.

View 1 RepliesSonata NF (2006-10) :: Cause Of Squeak In Driver Side Engine Compartment?
I have an 08 Sonata Limited. About a 3 months ago, a noise began appearing on the driver side, sounding like it was coming from the engine compartment, and it has become steadily worse.
Today, I am learned how to replicate the sound, but I cannot locate where it is coming from. Here is the scenario:
The sound is a squeaking, like 2 pieces of styrofoam being rubbed together. The sound comes and goes. The engine must be in Drive or Reverse, and under load, meaning the driver side tire must be on the ground. If I jack the car up so that the drivers side wheel is off the ground, and put it in D and let the tire turn freely the noise does not occur. The car does not need to be moving for the sound to occur; in fact, it sounds worse when the car is at rest.
Today, I jacked the car up and took off the drivers side front tire to see if I could identify the source of the noise. Later, I put the tire back on the hub, and without lowering the car, started to tighten the lug nuts. When, I tightened the nuts with a wrench, I began to slightly turn the axle and shift the location of the engine and lift it, and I heard the squeak! Obviously, the car was turned off, so I was able to repeatedly shake the wrench and slightly turn the wheel, which shook the engine, and repeat the squeak each time. I lowered the car and jacked up the passenger front side of the car and did the same thing; I was unable to get the sound to occur.
I could now identify the direction of the sound, and it was coming from under the air filter chamber. I tried removing the air filter box, but it is held in place by a rubber plug and the air intake tube. Unable to remove the box, I could not see exactly where the noise was coming from.
Is there a motor mount under the air intake box, or is there another part that may shift over time and begin to make this noise? My best guess is that when the car is in Drive and under load, the engine vibrations are causing something to make a squeaking sound.
Sonata NF (2006-10) :: 2007 - Whining Noise On The Right Side Of Engine Compartment
Any way, my 2007 Sonata with 57,000 miles just developed a whining noise on the right side of the engine compartment. It sounds like it is concurrent with RPM and I thought it might be the alternator, the drive belt or some pulley. I have even seen on the general internet that some others had a bad oil filter. To me, the noise seems to be coming from the alternator area. It is a relatively high pitched noise that almost sounds like an electric motor. Would love to get it fixed. I am nearing the 60,000 max on replacement from certain items and do not know if the alternator is covered.
View 4 RepliesPassat (B5) :: Boiling Coolant - Engine Compartment Getting Really Warm
I have an 03 Passat Wagon, 2.8L V6. My wife is getting ready for a big drive tomorrow, about 13 hours. Right now after reaching the operating temperature and then shutting off the coolant is boiling. The temp gauge never goes beyond 190 so it is not overheating but it is getting really warm in the engine compartment.
History: I noticed a couple of days ago that the expansion tank was badly discolored and had some corrosion inside. I know it was because I inadvertently mixed the green stuff with it about 2 months ago. I know it was stupid, but that was before I realized how stupid. Yesterday I drained the coolant and flushed it about 4 times. I couldn't flush it completely because I couldn't get at the drain next to the transmission fluid pan. I just drained it from the front outlet.
I refilled the system by disconnecting the expansion tank and holding it up until fluid came out of the hole on the hose going into the firewall. Then I was going to bleed it from the bleeder screw in the rear coolant pipe (as listed in Haynes manual) but could not find it. I even have the photo in the book to guide me and it is not there. Since I couldn't find it I skipped to the bleeder valve by the serpentine belt. I bleed that and hooked it all back up.
Now my fluid boils. I know it isn't the expansion tank cap because I took the one from my Jetta and put it in and it does the same thing. I put the cap from the Passat in the Jetta and it doesn't cause that coolant to boil. After driving today for a half hour the engine compartment felt superheated. Even the fenders were hot to the touch. It is almost 90 outside but it still felt unusually hot in the engine compartment. I would like for my wife to drive this on her road trip instead of the Jetta, but I can't let her do that with this problem.
I think I must not have bleed the system very well. The heater works and the temp gauge never goes above 190.
