Passat (B5) :: 1998 - Blue Smoke Coming From Exhaust At Start-up Depending On Angle Of Parking?
1998 Passat 1.8T Sedan, Manual, 118k miles, new head at ~ 87k due to broken timing belt. (Changed oil approximately 1.5-2k miles ago, no loss of oil evident). No noticeable loss of power. No MIL and no DTCs in storage.
But there does seem to be a bit of exhaust (puff....puff.....puff...) that seems to be coming from under the turbo side of the engine, but it is hard to tell.
Recently - over the last couple of weeks - noticed at start-up in morning, significant amounts of blue smoke from exhaust - eventually subsides to nothing after a couple of minutes. BUT, it only seems to appear when the car is angled with its nose slightly up in the driveway and not with its nose down. Lack of it occurring with its nose down was only tried twice; I may need to check it again.
After reading many posts, I thought it might be:
1) Oil overfill at last change - I noticed that my oil was less than 1/16" above the top bend. I doubted that would be the problem, but I siphoned off the small bit and it is within or just below the bend now (hard to read). It might be the oil since I used the Valvoline full synthetic MaxLife that is VW approved for the first time, but I find that hard to believe since I have been using synthetic for a couple of years now.
2) Oil getting into the combustion chamber via oil in the turbo system. Checked the low spot in the hose just before the throttle body. Seemed virtually dry; that's not the problem.
3) I guess it could still be oil gathering some place due to the failure of the turbo, but power seems quite normal.
4) Problem potentially with the PCV (actually called the breather and bleeder valves) and/or vacuum system being plugged up. After reading all of the posts regarding that I am starting to think (HOPE) that is it and not the turbo. While I do understand that flapper valves that are stuck would create greater pressure which could result in oil being forced into the chamber past the valve seats, I am not sure why the angle of the car while parked would matter since the higher pressure would only be occurring while driving; and the blue smoke goes away after driving and doesn't appear until next morning. But perhaps I am missing something.
Particularly which valves I should check/clean if I am seeing this smoking exhaust at start-up, but only when the car is parked with the nose up?
5) Sticky valves at the back-side (cabin-side of the engine)?
Mitsubishi - Lancer :: Blue Smoke Coming Out Of Exhaust When Accelerating?
I own a Lancer Evolution X and I've been having a strange issue where, when accelerating around 2500-3500 rpm a thick cloud of blueish smoke starts pouring from the exhaust for about a second or two accompanied by a loss in power. The smoke stops quickly and then it runs like normal. This only happens once in a while for a second or two. When idling there is no smoke. Or at Wot. There is no coolant mixing with oil. The oil was recently changed with the proper oil. and it still happens once in a while. I checked the turbo and there is no shaft play or oil inside of it. There is no loss of boost. Although I did see a tiny pool of oil near the turbo inlet and some more oil coating the inside of the intake pipe. is it possible that the turbo just sucks up some oil that collects at the end of the intake? the PCV line which connects to the intake appears to be letting some oil into the intake.
View 7 RepliesPassat (B5) :: 2001 - Blue Smoke On The Exhaust
I own a 2001 Passat, engine code AVF, the problem is that I have blue smoke on the exhaust, lots of it. The turbocharger has been tested and has almost no play in the rotor, but I have tried to blow some air into the oil intake and the air flow is very low, I have to blow quite hard so some air can go through. I also get allot of smoke and oil from the Crankcase Ventilation Filter and also I could see some oil around the dipstick pipe.
Now I don't know if there is a turbocharger oil return pipe problem (maybe it is clogged), the turbocharger itself or maybe some other problem.
AMC - AMX :: 1969 - Blue Smoke Coming Primarily Out Of Passenger Side Exhaust
1969 American Motors AMX....
I purchased a brand new motor and had it installed in my AMX w/ a 650 demon carb. This motor has as approximately 20-30 miles on it after engine was installed. Engine had some blue smoke coming primarily out of passenger side exhaust at first. The smoke was light to non-existent when car was started, and got progressively worse the longer the car was running - after driving for 3-5 minutes, the smoke would envelop the whole road.
Smoke also got worse as a few more miles were put on the engine. Engine started fine and idled fine - no problems when stopped at a light for a few minutes. Oil pressure fluctuated between maybe 35 psi to 90 psi while driving (to the best of my memory). Brought the engine in to be looked at. I've attached pictures - the ones in the engine were taken w/ a scope.
Found the following:
Oil extremely fouled and smells like gasoline.
8 spark plug gunked up and black
5 spark plug black (across from 8)
Ceramic burned of #5 header runner
No oil leaking past intake manifold gaskets
Fuel (and maybe oil?) on top of intake valve, and no carbon deposits
Fuel (and maybe oil?) on top of piston
Vertical scoring on top of cylinder wall
PCV valve connected to intake manifold, going directly to #5 and #8 - not sure if this is a problem or not.
What I'm trying to figure out, is this a problem with the motor, or a problem with the installation...
Passat (B5) :: Noticed A Puff Of Blue Smoke From The Exhaust
I was watching my wife drive off yesterday, and noticed a puff of blue smoke (oil) from the exhaust when she started moving.
This is a 2000 V6 passat. The car has a valve clatter when you first put a load on the engine that goes away quickly. I've read that this is likely the cam tensioners leaking down - is that right.
Dodge - Caravan :: 2000 - Puff Of Blue Smoke Come Out Of Exhaust
I have a 00 dodge caravan. Has always been a good van. Recently when I start it up first thing in the morning there is a puff of blue smoke come out of the exhaust. This will not show up again if you start the van up wth in an hour or so. If you leave it for 3 or more hours you will get a puff of blue smoke but not as much as the one after it has sat all night. What this might be????

Only had happened a few times in the last month. I start the car and it idles okay. drive down the road and then come to s stop and there's some blue smoke. It smells like burning oil. it only has happens 2 times in the last 2 months. only when its really cold it has happend. If I rev it when its happening I can see a big plume of bluish smoke and it smells like burning oil. after i drive after that no more smoke.
car has 95k on it
never been chipped
car has full turbo back and intake
car does not burn any oil between oil changes. oil stays at the same level.
did break an oil pan about 4 months ago. when I replaced it no signs on sludge.
turbo boosts fine
Car has had a rough idle for a long time. only when its a cold start and only last about 20 seconds. When I boost it or redline the car which is very rare no smoke at all. I have always kept the oil more on the high side of full. I usually fill it right to the high mark on the dip stick.
Passat (B5) :: Smoke Coming From Exhaust When Accelerating To Get On Highway
I have been searching online for days trying to find out why my car is smoking. i recently broke the oil pan on my 03 vw passat 1.8T. When I broke it I didn't know what had happened and I am sure all the oil drained completely out. The turn off engine now light came on and immediately shut car off! But I am not sure if i did in time before doing any major damage. my husband replaced the oil pan with a new one and everything seemed to be running good. i drove it for about 10 days and i noticed a whitish (I am not really sure of the color cause it was in my rear view mirror and couldn't see well) smoke coming from the exhaust as i was accelerating to get on the highway lasted about maybe 5sec then stopped. it has since done it 2 more times as i am getting on the highway but not every time. There are no fluid loss doesn't overheat when driving it all the fluids are good. I thought maybe head gasket or cracked head but husband says its not. the last it did it i stopped driving it in hopes to find out why its SMOKING!!!

View 7 RepliesSonata NF (2006-10) :: 2007 - Valve Ping / Blue Smoke Out Of Exhaust At Startup
I have an 07 Sonata V6 Limited with 65K miles. Recently I've noticed at startup, the valves pinging and blue smoke coming from the tail pipes. Settles down after a few seconds and doesn't do it again if you shut it down and re-start. Last time I experienced this was on a Silverado with well over 100K miles. Back then it was valve seals. Could this be possible with 65K? I noticed in the maintenance log that they request having valve clearance inspected at 60K. Could this be causing my condition? I'm the second owner, so the 100K warranty is out of the question.
View 6 RepliesMitsubishi - Montero :: Blue Smoke Puffs Out Of Exhaust Pipe When Accelerate From Stop Light
I have a mysterious exhaust issue on my 1991 Montero. After the engine warms up and I have been stopped at a red light for a minute or so when I accelerate away from the light a cloud of blue (I assume oil) smoke puffs out of the exhaust pipe. If I sit in the vehicle with it idling for, say, 5 minutes then the cloud of blue smoke can last all the way down the block. Then it goes away. Spark plugs are all clean. PCV valve recently replaced. Mo warning lights. What can this be?

View 1 RepliesFord F-150 (2009-2014) :: Blue Smoke Out Of Exhaust - Hard Start - Battery Goes To 0 When Fully Charged?
Some background, my truck has been sitting in the garage for a good month and I haven't started it. Been putting in 6 days a week for over 2 months at work, 60+ hour weeks. Today, I start the truck, it immediately dies. Successive attempts same result, blue smoke out the exhaust. I kept it running by revving it up but then it dies again. It's the original battery, 5+ years old now. MM shows 12v at rest, drops while cranking. I put the charger on the battery for a bit while I came inside to ask this, it's on trickle 2A and its at a 7 on the dial, and it goes to zero when fully charged.
I've been thinking I'll need to replace the battery before winter, but I'm hoping it's just that since its discharged that's why it won't stay running? Any thoughts? I have had zero issues with this truck but having a company truck over a year now, it sees very limited action. 2010 5.4 with just a tick over 40K, oil is good, air filter is clean and free of obstructions. We do live in the woods and have critters that hang out in the garage, like squirrels and chipmunks but I'm not seeing any evidence of chewed wires that I can see. It's in the garage and using a droplight I don't see anything obvious. Maybe it's as simple as I have to take the work truck and get a new battery I hope...
Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: Slight Miss At Idle - White And Blue Smoke From The Exhaust
Early 99 7.3. Runs ok has a slight miss at idle however every injector when unhooked makes a change. Has white and blue smoke From the exhaust. Has enough blow by to blow the oil cap off as your unscrewing it. My question is, I know engine restore is bad for these trucks but I can't afford to rebuild the engine. If I run the restore and then clean the IRP once the truck dies is this going to mess anything else up. Do you think it will by me a few months to save up for a rebuild
View 9 RepliesLexus GX 2010+ :: Blue Smoke Coming Out Tailpipe Upon Start Up
I have noticed 3 times so far blue smoke coming out the tailpipe upon start up. I have not been able to reproduce the issue on demand but I have seen it myself 3 times and it concerns me a bit. It's a 2012 with 36k on it. I changed the oil at 1k, 5k, 10k, 20k & 30k. Last oil change was done by the dealer but every oil change was done with Lexus Filter and synthetic oil. I have not noticed a loss of oil by the dipstick either. I noticed the poof of smoke last week when I was outside at the carwash and one of the employees moved it. I also noticed it when I used remote start the other 2 times. It's not enough that I would be able to see it from inside the truck. I also have black carbon / soot build up in the bottom of my tailpipe but I think that's with all vehicles. I know if I bring it to Lexus they will say "Unable to duplicate issue" and send me on my way.

Most had said theirs did it intermittently and got better after awhile... Mine does it every single time. I start the car. Usually after sitting for the day at work or overnight at home... Not sure which direction to go with this (or rather my hubby) to go. What would be checked first? turbo, fuel injectors, and valve seals...

I've got a 2001 passat tdi 130, awx engine, its got 213k on the clock and has been a great car for the last couple of years, over the last couple of weeks it has been down on power and is really smokey, blue smoke, it seems to be worse if its left idling for a while then give it a good rev up and it lets out a big cloud of blue smoke, it doesn't clear and is smokey all the time, I've not noticed any drop in oil level either which makes me think it may be injectors but it still runs ok with no diesel knock and starts first time, I don't want to be wasting any money on buying a turbo or injectors if it doesn't need it.
View 6 RepliesPassat (B5) :: Blue Smoke Blowing When Romp On W8
I may have an issue with my engine. My car is beginning to blow some blue smoke when I romp on it. It doesn't break up at all, there isn't any loss of power. It's just blowing some smoke and I noticed a light oil build up on my exhaust tips. I don't think I need to be hugely concerned yet, but I am bringing it to the dealership tomorrow just to make sure.
