Maintenance / Repairs :: Loose Steering Wheel / Not Jerky Just Sloppy

I just drove a car I'm looking to buy and the steering wheel was pretty loose. Not jerky, just sloppy.

I can tell it needs an alignment, but what could I be looking at in order to tighten it up?

I've learned that front ends can get pricey pretty quick.

Corolla :: 1998 CE - Timing Chain Is Slightly Loose And Cause Of Sound

I recently bought a 98 CE with about 80k miles for my commuter car. Overall I am very please with it but today I started hearing a metallic type chattering sound from the left side of the engine (looking from the front). Sounds to me like the timing chain is slightly loose and maybe the cause of the sound but when I search all the auto pats websites it doesn't show a timing chain tensioner. So do I have a belt or a chain? What the sound is? it doesn't do it continuously but it does seem to only start when the engine is warmed up and at idle. I did a compression test and all the cylinders are in the ballpark so Im hoping that's means my valves aren't taping.I cant imagine it would have lasted this long if the valves were taping (driven it about 500 miles so far).

Ford Ranger / B-Series :: 1998 4.0 - Timing Chain Getting Loose?

I really love this little truck. It's got 129,000 on it, but when I shut it down I can hear the chain clattering on the guides a little. Makes me wonder how much longer it will go before jumping a tooth. The truck has always been well maintained, but is there any ballpark figure when they usually let go? Is it worth it to pull the engine and put in a new chain? I'm fairly new to the Ranger.

Maintenance / Repairs :: Turn Off AC Before Stopping At End Of Day

Missing the point about why to turn off the AC before engine....it is to evaporate the condensate in the interior air handling system so as to dry it out and prevent mold and mildew in the evaporator and duct work area!!!My wife does not like this either, but, it would be very difficult to clean out and kill a moldy mess in the evaporator and duct work. Part of this is also running the fan on a high setting for several minutes or more after killing the A/C compressor to blow things dry!

Passat (B5) :: Timing Chain Won't Working - Blown Engine?

I posted my passat to sell/part out last week. So I talked to the mechanic today and he hasn't looked in the engine. He just says that when the timing chain goes it wrecks the valves and pistons (needs rebuild). HE WAS TRYING TO SAVE ME MONEY THOUGH...FAMILY FRIEND. My sister got lucky on her passat and only messed up the valves. But she was sitting still....I was doing 80mph on 95 going to work. Should I have the engine looked at or sell it.....what are the odds I got lucky??? I found a lot of posts/blogs about how everyones engine blew, but no one said they got lucky.

Maintenance / Repairs :: Car Won't Start - Clicks With Ignition Off

My son's car wouldn't start after parking at burger king. In off, the car has clicks just behind the floor shifter in a black module and under and foward of engine compartment fuse block. Only way to stop clicking is to move ignition switch to another position or pull IB Battery MaxiFuse in engine compartment fuse block. No activity from car in any other ignition position. no instrument panel lights, radio.

Thought ignition switch changed it, same condition. Battery checks out good. jumpstarting even using a second ground on engine doesn't change symptom. I can't find the modules that are clicking in my Chilton manual. What are the clicking modules and how can I move forward to get the car out of the burger king parking lot?

Maintenance / Repairs :: Car Shaking After Jumping Battery

I accidentally left my car on overnight and my battery was dead in the morning, of course. I got it jumped and I drove all the way to work, but every time I slowed down at a light or for traffic the car started shaking. It has to be fairly slow before it starts happening, say 15-10 mph or lower. It never did this before the battery went dead, and it stops as soon as I gave the car any amount of gas at all. I'm hoping this is just a temporary side-effect of having to jump the battery. What the problem might be?

Maintenance / Repairs :: When Turn The Key No Sound Aside From Fan Turning Every Few Seconds

My car won't start! When I turn the key, the car doesn't make any sounds aside from the fan turning every few seconds. The car seems to think the engine is going. All the lights and everything turn on (they're hardly turning on now after trying to get the car running for a couple of days). All the wires on the battery and to the starter are in really good shape, no corrosion or damage or anything.

I've tried starting the car while in neutral as well, still nothing. Does this sound more indicative of an issue with the starter or with the battery? My friend and I were trying to get the starter out so I could have it tested but the bolt is on very very tight (broke a wrench trying to undo it). I want to figure out what the most likely culprit is before I go too much further. Unfortunately I'm out of work right now so taking it to a mechanic isn't really an option, but I really really need to get my car fixed.

Camry 2012+ :: Timing Chain Rattle Noise Coming From The Engine?

I've noticed a noise coming from the engine which sounds to me like the timing chain. Seems like the tensioner is keeping the chain a little loose while the RPM's are low. The rattle doesn't happen all the time; only when I let off the throttle or accelerate keeping the RPM's low.

This is just my guess that it's the timing chain. I had heard a similar rattle in my old I35 and I had to change the timing chain tensioner.

I'm going to check the engine oil level tomorrow morning. This 10,000 mile oil change is really starting to seem like a not so good idea! Right now I'm at 9950..
