Lexus LX 2008+ :: Driveline Clunk When Taking Off?
Grease the tailshaft unit, or replace the entire shaft. I'll grease it tonight, what type of grease to use?
Lexus techs charge too much for parts/labour here, so i would like to attempt to sort this out myself.
Ford Transmission :: Clunking Noise In The Driveline
1988 F-150 4X4, 302, 5 speed manual Mazda transmission. I picked this truck up from a teenager and have been going through it fixing the odds and ends, just when I thought I was done a new one popped up.
There is an odd "clunk" in the driveline, but I cannot pinpoint where it is coming from. It happens almost exclusively in third gear, shifting up or down into this gear. It has happened in first gear one time that I can remember. When it happens, I hear the pop (clunk), then feel a slight jerk like when a chain slips on a bicycle.
I spent some time under the truck yesterday trying to locate it, but had no luck. Did find the yoke on the rear end , 8.8, a little loose. Found that the U-joints at each end of the driveshaft were worn out. The transfer case, BW 1356, was quite low on fluid. And there was nothing out of the ordinary with the transmission.
Tightened the yoke, replaced the U-joints, drained the T-case and refilled with fresh ATF and pulled the fill plug on the tranny to ensure it had ATF instead of gear oil in it. It did.
I hoped all of that had solved my mystery noise, but I wasn't that lucky so now I need to isolate it. Seems that if there was a problem in the T-case or rear diff, the noise would be present trough all gears wouldn't it? With it being primarily in one gear, could the problem be in the transmission? If so, can it be rebuilt for a reasonable price?
Ford Transmission :: 1997 - Driveline Noise And Vibration
It's NOT a truck. But my '97 Town car happens to use the same 4R70W transmission and 8.8" rear axle that the F150 from the same era used to use....
I'm troubleshooting what I first thought were bad pinion bearings in the rear differential. On the highway the car makes a shaking/growling kind of noise that fades in and out from 55 MPH and higher. Also when you're on the throttle there is a howling type of noise that comes from the rear of the car, the harder you're on the throttle the worse it is.
I got under the car convinced that my pinion bearings were shot, looking for the smoking gun. But I can't find any noticeable play on the pinion shaft of the rear axle. Slid on up to the front of the driveshaft and there's noticeable play on the extension housing of the transmission:

Any chance this is causing my issue, or am I in for some expensive rear end work?
Ford Transmission :: Driveline Vibration / Felt In Pedal When Accelerate From 50 To 65 MPH
I got my 77 ford truck w/four wheel drive half ton with a np435, 351M and i was wondering if a bad or worn bearing can cause vibration. i can feel it by the pedal when i accelerate from 50 to 65. I don't know if that's my trans or maybe the pilot bearing?
View 10 RepliesSanta Fe (CM - 2007-12) :: 2008 Limp Mode - CEL / ESC And AWD Transmission Lights Blinking
I'm a little bit stuck here. This happened last night, and the dealer is closed today. I have a 2008 Santa Fe SE. It stalled last night, and when I turned it back on, I got a check engine light, the ESC light, and the AWD transmission light blinking. When I go to accelerate, it will not go passed 2000 RPM, and it is driving very sluggish. Its not knocking, or making any other kind of sounds. The air conditioning does not work, but the fan blows uncooled air. It accelerates extremely slowly, even with the petal mashed.
I plan on taking it in tomorrow, but I'd like to know if there is some way to reset the computer. I tried disconnecting the battery for about 30 minutes, but it didn't work.
Santa Fe (CM - 2007-12) :: 2008 - Hum Noise From Driveline
Have 2008 Santa fe with a driveline hum noise. Originally thought is was a wheel bearing so I replaced what I thought was the suspect ones (1 in front and 1 in the back). Noise still there! Carrier bearing on the drive shaft? Front axle shaft? I'm at a lose.
View 7 RepliesFord F-150 (2004-2008) :: Driveline NOT Binding In 4WD?
I've had occasional issues the last year getting my 04 into 4WD, but at 270K on the original IWE actuators, that's probably to be expected.
I had new actuators ready to install, but took the truck out for a drive before doing the job. On a gravel road the back tires spun easily in 2WD, I switched over to 4wd and it was much harder to spin the tires- you could tell it was in 4WD- or at least seemed that way. I left it in 4WD and tried turning on a tar road and it didn't seem like it was binding at all. (I have an open diff in the rear, assume the front is the same?)
Anyway, I installed new actuators last night and took it out for another drive afterwords. I put it in 4WD and could IMMEDIATELY feel the binding when turning.
What I cant figure out is why I could NOT feel binding while in 4WD prior to the install. Could I have been in 3WD somehow? (04 Super Crew, Automatic, 4.6L, XLT- pretty basic pickup...)...
Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: ABS Light Coming On And Soon After Transmission Goes To Limp Mode - Code P2106
I just got an Egde Evo which I installed and everything looked great. After a few runs, I noticed the ABS light coming on an soon after that my transmission goes to limp mode (the wrench lights up).
I receive the DTC error: P2106 on the Edge Evo.
I have gone back to Factory default, but it keeps coming back, ie. the ABS light lights up and the Trans goes to Forced Limited Power (according to the Evo).
Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: 2007 - Rear Driveline Vibration At All Speeds
On my 07' I bought it home mid AUG. It has been getting much worse to a point there is a rear driveline vibration at all speeds above 40 and up to 70. I used to change intensity whether you are on or off the gas, and would almost vanish if in neutral. However now it is all the time.
I cannot feel any play on the u-joints, the yoke has a little play in the xfer case but is is normal like on most other trucks I have owned, and the pinion flange is nice and tight. Could this be **tight** ujoints or the driveshaft itself? It looks rusty, but there are no dents on it.
Lexus LS 2007+ :: Abnormal Driveline Drone / Vibration Between 55 - 65 MPH
My car definitely has a driveline vibration, but the steering wheel also vibrates. All vibrations are, however, intermittent as to when they come and go, and the intensity - on both the chassis and the steering wheel - can also vary.
Tires and wheels have been ruled out with 99.9% confidence at this point... What puzzles me is how a driveline issue in a rear-wheel-drive vehicle can affect the steering wheel (even though it can certainly explain the shaking of the whole car). In the end, it's all connected to the same body, but still... I am even wondering if my car has this driveline vibration PLUS something else (e.g., control arms in the front suspension appear to be a popular replacement part in these cars according to other threads).

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: Driveline Jerking When Try To Accelerate Sometimes On Flats / Rarely On Downhill But Always On Uphill
2004 F150 FX4 5.4L. I drove from Vancouver to Edmonton and back this week and I started to get some issues. If I'm in overdrive at highway speeds, from about 90km/h to 120km/h give or take, which would be around 1600-2100rpm, and then I try to accelerate, sometimes on flats, rarely on downhills, but always on uphills, the truck will begin to jerk fore and aft. It feels like it's something through the driveline, either the driveshaft or the differential, but I really can't say for certain as I'm stuck in the driver's seat while this is happening.
If the truck downshifts or if I take it out of overdrive, i.e. getting the revs up high, the problem is no more. Other than the issue I'm having, it operates perfectly so this is very odd. I know that overdrive isn't a hill climbing gear, but normally an engine in the wrong gear will simply lug along until it's downshifted. The entire truck jerking shouldn't happen.
On my way to Edmonton, I noticed that this would cause one single, minor jerk. This is my way of describing it, but it was like the driveshaft had spun freely and then promptly re-engaged with the differential gear, causing a clunk. I doubt that's actually what happened, but I'm just trying to explain the sensation. It kind of feels like trailer jerking.
On the way back to Vancouver, it was a lot worse. Like I said, the whole truck would be jerking about once per second but there was one time that I found the sweet spot and it began jerking rapidly, twice per second. I threw it out of overdrive to stop this but the vibration caused the check engine light to flash a few times but it went away and didn't stay on.
What I might be up against? Been doing a little research. Seems as though this is common and it's supposedly the spark plugs, but those only have 50,000km on them.
Ford Super Duty (1999-2016) :: Transmission Would Not Work In Tow Mode And Caused Engine To Go Into Limp Mode
I have a 2008 F350 with a 6.4 Powerstroke diesel engine that just experienced total engine failure. It has around 65K miles.
There is a heavy burn star pattern on all 8 pistons, a few pistons are cracked, a few cylinder walls are scored, glow plugs are melted, both heads are cracked with multiple stress fractures in each head.
About 1 month previously, the transmission would not work in tow mode and caused the engine to go into limp home mode. The dealership just replaced the entire tranny as a warranty item. About 1 week before the engine failure, I put in a 5.25 oz bottle of Lucas injector cleaner with a full tank of gas.
The Ford dealership is saying that the star pattern on all 8 pistons is due to high pressure fuel overspray and is evidence that I had a tuner on this engine and that the warranty is invalid. I did not have a tuner. What might have caused this engine failure?
Also, they only ripped down the top half of the motor, not the bottom half. I heard this might have been caused by a cracked crank shaft, but Ford refuses to investigate this possibility.
IS F (2008-2014) :: Sport Mode On Or Off When In Auto Mode
So i noticed, when in auto mode, whether sport mode is on or off, it does the same thing. If i floor it from a stand still, the transmission takes noticeably longer to go from 1st into 2nd then from 2nd to 3rd, 3rd to 4th, etc. 1st to 2nd takes like a good second, kinda like this:
1st VROOOOM.....................2nd VROOOM..3rd VROOOM..4th.....etc..
If I drive it in manual mode, then it shifts just as fast. So this only happens in auto.
Dodge - Ram :: Heat Gauge Crawl Up When Driving For Long But Truck Not Overheating
My 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 Magnum V6 keeps having a problem where periodically the heat gauge will inexplicably go to over heating, when the truck is not. It loves to do this when starting out on a long trip, though it only does it once. The heat gauge also likes to crawl up when driving extended periods on the road. It isn't overheating. I don't hear it gurgling or bubbling when I stop. In all this time, the air conditioner has worked and never warmed up. Lately, I've also noticed that the heater won't work when it's seeming to overheat.
View 3 RepliesFord - Focus :: 2013 - Hesitation At Low Idle / Car Moving At Crawl Speed
We have a brand new 2013 Ford Focus, a little over 2500 miles. We drove the vehicle to NYC, starting the trip with over 500 miles. During stop-n-go driving the following conditions are experienced: - car in drive but stopped, engine idles at 750rpm- car moving at crawl speed, less than 5mph, and RPM between 750 to 2100, engine acts as if it will stall (IT IS AN AUTOMATIC TRANS); when this happens there's an obvious shudder - again almost as if the car will stall out- cannot determine what gear its in, but probably first, second, or maybe third, but no higher
We took the car back to the dealer, but they acted as if this was a normal, if not, non existent issue; they were very dismissive.
Ford 6.7L Power Stroke Diesel :: Grinding / Smoke Coming Out And Slowed To A Crawl
I was getting off of the highway and all of a sudden sounded like some grinding and smoke and slowed to a crawl. No codes, no leaks (that I could see), Job 1 truck. Tow driver said he thought it was a turbo as well since they go through so many. Son of a... Was leaving on vacation Friday, looks like we are taking the Volvo.

I have 08 GS350 that has been doing some big time hesitating at low speeds. Brought to dealer and the mentioned water got into the transmissions and want me to pay for a flush.(I think they should, since it's under warranty). Can damage done now cause issues in the future?
View 12 RepliesLexus GS 2006-11 :: 2008 GS460 - Transmission Lag From Stop To Slow Speeds
Dropped my car off at the shop due to the transmission lag from stop to slow speeds. Sometimes it feels like I was dragging sandbags. Then all of a sudden the car wakes up and goes.
The shop said the fluid "looks" fine but seems to think there might be too much fluid in it. So here we go with a transmission service. I hope this fixes it.
Lexus RX 2004-09 :: 2008 RX350 - Excessive Slipping Or Delay In Response In Transmission
I have a 2008 RX350 AWD with only 500 miles on it so far and I am starting to get concerned about what seems to be excessive slipping or a delay in response in the trans. Under normal forward driving the trans seems to shift very smooth. The problem occurs under situations where I am coming to a near stop, basically coasting, and then have to accelerate again to continue forward. This could be in a slow moving traffic type situation or when maneuvering through a parking lot. When I try to execute a small increase in speed the engine revs but the trans doesn't respond.
It's as though it's in neutral and unable to decide which gear it should be in. After a 2 to as long as a 5 second delay it finally engages and moves forward. The condition is even worse if I am heading into a slight incline. Once it is engaged everything is fine and the subsequent shifts are very smooth. When starting from a complete stop it works perfectly. I've never had a transmission slip this much in any vehicle. There was one situation where I was almost broadsided because the RX delayed in moving forward.
I realize this is a subjective call but I am trying to determine what level of slipping in the trans is considered normal under the conditions I've described. I have searched and read past threads about issues with the earlier model years but I thought they were resolved by now. I haven't taken the RX in for service yet but I fear I will get the standard - everything is working as designed - answer from my dealership.
