Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Hard To Shift Into 1st And Reverse When Car Is Hot
Over the past few weeks, my car (2002 Golf 2.0L) has gotten really hard to shift into 1st and reverse (has crunched once or twice), but only when the car is hot, after driving it for a little while. When this happens, and I try to shift into reverse, the shifter feels really "sticky" and can get kind of stuck in the depressed position near reverse.
I bled the hydraulic system and replaced the slave cylinder, but no dice. I haven't noticed any clutch slipping. Shop wants to replace the whole clutch. Is this the right answer?
Golf IV / Jetta IV :: 2002 VW GL - Hard To Go Into 1st Gear And Reverse
Drove my 02 VW golf GL to the airport, it sat there for 4 days, drove it back home. Next day I noticed that my 1st gear and reverse are very hard to get into. So I kept messing around with it and noticed that if I tried to put it slowly into first gear that there was no way in hell it would go, it felt like the gear was closed.
But if I put it into second gear and push it from second gear into first gear it goes back into first gear about 70% of the time. And it will also go into first gear if I push my stick down as if I'm attempting to go into reverse, and slowly move it into 1st gear.
The reverse is also very hard to get into it feels just like the 1st gear does when you try to do it slowly, it's like it's closed off/blocked. Latest work that was done to the car, replaced the clutch about 4-5 months ago.
Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Hard To Reverse After Shifter Bushing Install
Installed some shifter cable bushings. But now reverse is harder to get to. Instead of just pushing it down and left for reverse.. Now I have to tilt the shift know slightly towards 4th gear then push down and go left and the gate seems so much smaller now. Overall it doesn't feel that much better than stock. what could i have done wrong?

2001 VW Jetta 1.8t automatic.
Transmission has a hard time going into 1st and reverse. Also some times hits hard going into third. I have a CEL for a vehicle speed sensor? Was wondering if it's not the VSS but maybe one of the other tranny sensors?
Separate question. Same car has a rough idle issue. Occasionally stalls but intermittently runs normal always has a low idle around 600 rpm. I have a code for an injector on cylinder three.
VSS code : P0725 - engine speed sensor circuit malfunction
Injector code : P0203 - injector circuit open cyl 3
Golf IV R32 :: Transmission Will Not Go Into Reverse When Push Gear Down
So this morning before the days driving event for work, myself along with a few other people were doing laps on our course trying to get the best time. I messed up two launches and didn't think much of it (except for being terrible at launching). Later on after participants started showing up we put our cars away. I tried to back into my spot and my car wont go into reverse now. I can push the gear lever down and move it over to reverse but the transmission wont go into reverse.

When I push down the clutch there is an annoying whining noise. I can be at a stop or driving and either way it does it. It goes away when I let the clutch up. 04 GLi 1.8T 6 Speed. Has the Valeo Single Mass clutch conversion.

I just changed all my flex lines to stainless steel and my pads and rotors were replaced. I had some issues with calipers dragging. I used a power bleeder to bleed the brakes all the way around. Now my pedal feels really weird. If I push the pedal fast it brakes hard then it goes to the floor. If i just push it soft, it will just slowly go to the floor without braking at all.
View 3 RepliesGolf IV / Jetta IV :: 2002 - AC Only Works If Turn On (push Button) Before Starting Car
2002 jetta AC only works if I turn on and then start car
1- get in car, push in AC button
2- start car
3- feel cold air
4- will blow cold forever (if car is running)
If I am driving and turn on, it does not work. Seems that it trys to come on, kicks compressor for maybe a second then waits 5 seconds and trys to kick again. The pressures are high but in green (OK), when I first saw this I added a little Freon , it did not change characteristic.
When it does not work the rad-fan comes on and blows, When it works the rad fan blows as it should.
This is a 4-cyl 2.0 GL and does not have climate control...
Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Reverse Won't Engage Reverse After Transmission Replacement
I got a 99' Jetta gls 5 spd. I just replaced the transmission and now the car won't engage reverse from inside the cockpit. Reverse can be engage from inside the engine bay, but when the shift knob is depressed nothing happens. Linkag cables are in the correct spots.
View 6 RepliesGolf IV R32 :: Hard To Get In Reverse And Shifting From 1st To 2nd Is Very Rough
Lately my R is acting up, sometimes hard to get in reverse and shifting from 1st to 2nd is very rough. I looked at the cables , the left one towards the engine , the rubber bushings seems to be broken, lots of wiggle in there, is that enough to cause this? Is there any adjustments needed on the cables anyways?

View 1 RepliesGolf/GTI VI :: 2011 - Extremely Hard To Get Into Either Reverse - Squeaking While Clutched?
I have a 2011 GTI with ~23k miles on it, manual trans. Bought it CPO this year. Recently, I have had an extremely hard time getting the car into either reverse or first. It only happens randomly. It often takes a few times to finally get it to click. Other times I think it is in gear only to let off the clutch and hear the gears grind.
Next, when it is cold, it is squeaking when I lift off the clutch just before the gear engages. Again, it is totally random. It may go an entire week without doing it, and then one day start.
I have read all over these forums that this is likely a linkage issue with the difficulty shifting and a TOB issue with the squeaking on the clutch liftoff.
I am taking the car into the dealer tomorrow (still under CPO warranty). I called a local, and extremely well respected, Euro repair shop and he said it sounded like a classic pilot brushing problem. When I looked online, it says that the manual GTIs don't have pilot brushings... Is this correct?
Additionally, what do I need to expect from the dealer? I've read horror stories about the dealers tearing down the clutch (~10hr job) to get inside and replace something only to say that there is "wear and tear" and that the job isn't covered under warranty. Additionally, I know I won't be able to replicate the sound tomorrow when I bring it in. Nor will I be able to replicate the difficulty getting the car into gear. Short of leaving the car with them for 3 weeks and having them try it every few hours, they won't see what I am talking about.
My question at this point is, does a bad TOB cause any long term problems, or is it just an occasional annoyance with the sound? And what specifically should I tell the dealer about the difficulty shifting to get them to do something about it?

View 2 RepliesGolf IV / Jetta IV :: MK4 GLS 2.0 Shuddering When Drive In Reverse
I bought a MK4 GLS 2.0 5 spd with 200,000km on it back in february, It currently has 208,000km on it.
Whenever I drive in reverse, I get this loud shuddering/rattling noise with a slight vibration. I've noticed that it is louder from a stop and when the clutch it partially depressed accelerating, but pretty much goes away when the clutch is let out or when coasting.
It is sounds like it is coming from behind the front seats to the rear of the car. It almost sounds like the rear shock mounts are rattling. I also sometimes still here a slight knock, similar to the sound of worn sway bar bushings, but replaced those a few weeks ago.
I also get the same knock whenever I screw up a shift and the engine moves. I also considered and engine or transmission mount but i don't really get any vibration through the steering wheel other than a small amount which could be attributed to the poly dog bone bushings.
About two months ago but I replaced the RR shock mount with a new one. The old one looked fine. I replaced the RL shock mount with the one that I removed from the RR side.
Changing the shock mounts made no difference but I noticed that I could easily compress the RL rear shock with my hand. Could worn rear shocks be causing this noise/vibration? I've searched but I can't find an explanation besides the shock mounts.
I have replaced a few suspension components in the last few months:
-rear beam bushings in august
-front sway bar bushings a few weeks ago
-RR rear shock mount (new)
-RL rear shock mount (used from other side, but looked fine and replacing it made no difference)
-energy suspension poly dog bone bushings about six months ago
I don't think the car was really maintained that well due to it having original sway bar bushings and having tires that were worn very unevenly due to the rear beam bushings when I got it.
Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Tranny Replaced, Can't Reverse
This weekend I replaced the transmission in my 2000 12v vr6 5 speed golf. Got In drive around block going through each gear all seemed fine. Then I tried reverse and couldnt find it. Seem like it reverse was more like 5th cause car would try and move forward. I have the new style shifter and the bearing is quite a bit beat up. However if I in engine bay operating the gears directly on shift paddle I still can't seem to find reverse. Is there some kind of lock out or what could I be missing. I tried adjusting the cables but that seemed to make things worse not better.
