Ford Ranger / B-Series :: 1999 4x4 - Clunking / Rattling Occasionally While Driving

I am considering purchasing a 1999 4x4 ford ranger. The original owner has receipts for everything done on it recently. Rebuilt transmission, New ac, New shocks, new tires. I have never owned a ford but I always loved my friend's ranger. The only problem I had with it was an occasional clunking/rattling noise when test driving. I have read and was told this can be a common problem.

Ford - Ranger :: 1997 - Clunking / Rattling Sound In Manual Transmission At Random Times

I have a '97 Ranger with about 120k, 5 spd manual transmission, 2wd. For the last 2-3 months I'm hearing and feeling a clunking or rattling noise (I can't decide which it is) coming from the rear of the vehicle at random times.

I can't really predict or find a pattern of when the noise will happen, but it seems like it is most likely to happen when I'm either accelerating up a hill or when I'm braking relatively hard. It happens whether the clutch is in or out. Doesn't seem to matter. It does NOT happen when idling, only when traveling. I don't ever remember it happening at highway speed (65mph).

If I have my hand on the stick shift I can feel the shaking / rattling as it happens. There seems to be no impact on the performance of the vehicle - no additional trouble shifting into or out of gear, accelerating, or anything else.

On a recent trip I towed a 1,000 lb trailer and I did not feel or hear the noise at all during that trip (about an hour each way). Any guess as to whats going on?

Prius (2004-09) :: Clunking / Rattling On Driver Side While Driving Straight Over Imperfections In Road

So, fresh off the new brake actuator pump and new hybrid battery and a nice four hour drive yesterday and today i went over a small bump and started to get a loud clunk/rattle coming from the driver's side front wheel area.

It got worse as I drove home and even rattles going straight on a fairly flat road when i hit only minor imperfections. It sounds like something is loose. I cannot reproduce any noise bouncing the car or rocking it side to side.

Prior to this I would get a squeak/groan from the driver's side when I would go over speed bumps and similar large dips or rises, but that has been curiously quiet for awhile.

Golf IV R32 :: Rattling / Clunking Noises From Front Axles

Posted a while back about a rattling/clunking noise coming from my front suspension. Since my car had nearly 100k miles on it and was still all stock, I went through and replaced ever single part of the front suspension. (Control arms, ball joints, got some Koni coil overs, strut mounts, sway bar end links, swar bar bushings). Turns out the noise wasn't actually related to the suspension. I've got massive play in both of my front axles. They make horrible rattling/clunking noises going over any sort of bump, even the REALLY small ones.

Golf IV R32 :: Transmission Clunking In 6th Gear?

I was driving my r yesterday, cruising down the highway in 6th. I let off the gas and I heard a clunk from the tranny. The shifter moves forward with the noise after I let off the gas pedal. It does it most of the time and I didn't know if this was a problem with all Rs or something mechanically bad.

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Transmission Clunking - Losing Power During Takeoff

I have a 99 Jetta MK4 2.0L. I purchased it last month and have been having issues since.

First it was the coilpack that made my engine bog.. (at the time, my transmission was also clunking into gear, getting stuck in gears etc.) changed coilpack and it went away.

Then I had issues where the car would turn, but not start. Changed the Crankshaft Position sensor.

All was good again, then my transmission started to do the clunking (but no getting stuck in gear) and then i started losing power during takeoff.

Then it got really bad, I got home and tried to start it up again, i can floor it on the gas and the car will studder and bog out for a good 3 seconds, and then slowly accelerate into gear.

Some points i was in neutral trying to rev and it was bogging then also.

Btw, coilpacks were changed, all o2 sensors were changed, and the spark plugs have been done recently. Pulled codes,

- P0422 Main catalyst efficiency below threshold
- P0103 Mass or volume air flow circuit high input
- P1127 Long term fuel trim be system too rich
- P0715 Turbine/input shift speed sensor circuit

Also tested driving again, bogged out initially then started to move. Checked if i could get past 40km/hr and i hit 60km/h. After driving a little bit it seemed to be a little bit more responsive, but still boggy.

Golf/GTI VI :: Manual Transmission - Rattling Noise When Clutch Pedal Is Not Engaged

I currently own an mk6 gti with a manual trans... as of late I've been noticing a rattling noise when the clutch pedal is not engaged.. once engaged the rattling stops completely .. it seems to be getting louder and louder .. I am worried this could eventually turn into something worse than just a rattling noise .. i had a friend mention it could be the "throwout bearing" ..

Passat (B6) :: Getting Clunking / Rattling At Low Speeds?

So I've got a clunk/rattle going over bumps at low speeds. It sounds like its coming from the front, and for the longest time I just wrote it off as a loose engine cover. Well at the latest dealer visit they finally got it on right and still, the clunk. Some info: it's only over bumps/potholes at lower speed (~35 or lower) and its not under acceleration. It doesn't favor a side when I'm turning, and it's like a clunk that rattles, if that makes sense. A mount/bushing?

Ford Brakes/Suspension :: Clunking And Rattling In Front End

I have had a clunk in the front end that started out as a light clunk that was sometimes noticeable. It has now turned into a clunk that can be heard very often. It sounds like a hollow clunk. I'll try to explain it so it makes sense...If I'm going over a bump or speed bump or something like that it doesn't really do it noticeably. If I'm driving a get to a place where the road is uneven or there is a hole or pothole and the front end seems to "fall into the hole", then the sound is very audible, and I can feel it slightly in the steering wheel and under my feet in the drivers floorboard. So, I've had the front end checked out 4 times and between what they said to do and what I've read on here...here is what I've done so far......

Changed end links with moog end links
Changed sway bar bushings with moog bushings
Undid the bushing mounts from the front frame and wired the sway bar up to keep from flopping around. No change in sounds
Didn't get rid of the clunk....

Had front end shop check out truck... They said ball joints were ok, no play in them. They did say that they could feel some "clicking in the pitman arm pivot" when turning the wheel. Like something was loose in box.

I've changed shocks and bearings.

I can grab a hold of the passenger outer tie rod at the adjustment sleeve and rotate the tir rod and it will rotate around in the socket and hitting on the insertion point and make a metal thud sound.

Again, took into shop and they said that would be normal b/c the tie rods have to have that to keep from binding up in front end.

My thinking is that if the tie rod rotates that much, then it is rotating the drag link which in turn puts stress on the pitman arm which in turn has either broken or sheared the pinion shaft inside the box and then when I go over a hole, it moves and all of the above is put into motion.

Shop (Ford) basically called me an idiot and that wouldn't be the cause.

So, now onto my thoughts and questions....
Radius arm bushings
Axle bushings (????? how many and where are they all located)
tie rods and drag links..

Lexus LS 2007+ :: Suspension Rattling Clunking Sound On LS460

Why my suspension is so loud and clunky are doing a swaybar link and upper control arm replacement? I did remove the air suspension unit in order to access and remove the bolts that hold the upper control arm bracket mount onto the frame.

I did not think that would do any harm. Now my suspension is way louder than it ever was to begin with.. I just did a visual inspection and saw that my original parts were cracked and worn in the bushings and links. So I did a swap.

Elantra HD (2006-10) :: 2009 - Rattling / Clunking Noise Around The Rear Glass Area

I just purchased a 2009 Hyundai Elantra a few months ago.. I have been hearing a rattling/ clunking noise around the rear glass area. I brought it to a local dealership and they thought that it was the bracket for the trunk lid rods. They replaced the bracket and the noise is still there..

Camry :: 2011 LE - Suspension Starts Creaking / Clunking And Rattling Literally Every Time It Rains

After going through a 1996 avalon, 2003 sequoia, 2004 tundra, 2004 highlander, 1978 celica, and a 1990 4runner i decided to buy myself a beautiful new 2011 camry LE.

I have had the car now for under 6 months i've put under 10k miles on it.

Already the front left strut has been replaced. Right rear strut has been replaced.

Now the front left strut needs replacing less than 2000 miles later again!

The car is pretty fun to drive but seriously...every time it rains i have to replace my suspension. it starts creaking and clunking and rattling literally every time it rains.

Every time it as rained. my car goes to the dealership and gets outfitted for new strut somewhere! I don't know why my car is giving me these kind of issues. its not very toyota like.

Tiguan :: 2012 - Clunking / Rattling Noise Coming From Front Passenger Side Suspension Arm

I just purchased my first VW, a 2012 Tiguan SE in Night Blue Metallic. The level of fit and finish, handling, and general feel are miles ahead of my old '04 Jeep Liberty.

Anyway, I've had the car for about 250 miles and have noticed a clunking/rattling noise coming from what sounds like the front passenger side suspension arm. The noise is fairly quiet but seems to consistently happen when turning left over uneven pavement.

I plan on taking it to the dealer this weekend and it is only a minor annoyance, but a shame since the rest of the vehicle is so quiet and refined.

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: Rattling / Clunking Sound From Front Left Wheel

I've had a rattling/clunking sound from my front left wheel recently so I jacked up that corner. As soon as the tire elevated off the ground the bottom fell inward. I could easily push the top of the tire inward and pull the bottom of the tire outward. Does this lead to a bad hub or bad ball joint(s)?

Golf IV R32 :: While Driving Transmission Lunges

My R32 is a bit higher mileage, around 137k. Over the last year most money spent on the car has been for preventative maintenance and just to make the car ride as best it can. I keep having it happen though where when I shift in a more "Spirited" manner or if I'm in gear giving it gas and then take my foot off the throttle, you can feel the motor/trans still lunge and it's driving me kind of crazy. In the spring, I installed BFI Stage 2 motor/trans/dogbone mounts which have greatly improved everything, however, I still seem to have this movement in shifts/letting off the throttle that I can't seem to pin point. Searching has proved difficult just because of how specific it is I guess, as everything turns up either dealing with the mounts I've replaced or just being completely unrelated.

The mounts are for sure installed and torqued correctly. I had a friend look at the motor while I gave it revs, and the motor does not move much at all, as it shouldn't with the stage 2 mounts. It just seems to be when in motion where if I do a hard shift, there's a lurch and if I take my foot off the throttle while in gear, there's a decent lurch as well. I've driven a buddy's R that has way less mileage and with the same mounts, but there was absolutely no movement like in mine, which just makes me think I'm missing something else.

Golf/GTI VI :: 2012 TDI Transmission Jerky While Driving

So I've got 8400 miles on my TDI, and for quite some time now, I've been intermittently noticing the car somewhat jerky while driving. Jerky to a small extent, like the DSG can't make up it's mind as to the gear. I could be driving home at 45 or so, and I'll randomly feel a slight bump through the pedal when I'm on a flat road. I've gotten this quite a bit. Obviously I expect to feel the DSG shifting when I'm flat out gunning it, but not when I'm maintaining a speed and should hypothetically be in the same gear that entire time.

Golf IV R32 :: When Driving Hard And Speed Shift From 2nd To 3rd Transmission Grind

I have an 04' R32 with about 56k on it. Here's the problem; when I drive it hard and speed shift from 2nd to 3rd it grinds just a little. It doesn't do it when I'm just cruisen grany shifting. For awhile now I've been thinking that the synchronous from 2nd to 3rd gear was going bad, till I talked to a friend with a 20th GTI who said that the 6 speed trannies will start to do that, and there's really nothing you can do about it. Is this true that I just have to deal with it or can it be fixed?

Santa FE SM (2001-06) :: Transmission Clunking When Upshift

Daughter bought 05' Santa Fe 4wd 3.5L, from original owner ,car has 47,000 miles on it, was maintained by dealer, and was obvious that car was well taken car of.

So first issue was throttle hesitation, which was mostly corrected by software update.

Now, transmission is acting goofy. If you step on gas heavily, it's as if the front wheels - or tranny -slip, then catch. Almost like a limited slip, then as it up shifts, you get a clunk. If it starts out in 2nd (I dont understand this ) then it's clunking going into 3rd.

If you are gently taking off, tranny acts normal. If you're cruising and punch it, it upshifts well, car goes nice.

Daughter called dealer who said update to throttle programming should have corrected any shift issues

So tech takes it out for ride, is able to get it to act up and states : issue in internal, and we need new tranny. 47,000 miles and need new tranny. Nice

I'm wondering if a fluid change and battery disconnect would work. Seems to me the the tech did a quick and dirty diagnosis.
