Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: Fuel In Spark Plug Holes / Gas Smell
I was checking my COPs and the first one I pulled out of my 2002 f150 5.4l had a clearish liquid on the coil boot. I looked down in the spark plug hole and it was filled almost to the top of the spark plug itself. I smelled it and it smelled like gas. Why this would happen and what should be done to fix it?

I ran out of CNG - truck won't start on reg fuel. Fuse good, relay clicking and I believe I have voltage going to plug connector going to tank. However, I do not have any wiring diagram to know what I'm looking for. The plug is four wire - yellow- 11 volts, red / black stripe 7 volts, black / red stripe and black wire no volts. What checks can I make before dropping the fuel tank and pulling fuel pump? 2003 F150 7700 Bi-fuel ....

How do you test the fuel pump regulator, the truck wont start. I tested the schrader valve and it does have pressure but didn't seem like much. (need a gauge) I replaced fuel pump a few years ago so was wondering about the regulator. Is there a test procedure?

View 1 RepliesFord F-150 - 1997-2003 :: Truck Died While Driving - Crank But No Spark / No Fuel
My Truck : 1999 Ford F-150 Extended Cab 4x4 5.4L V8
So the other day I was driving the truck and it just dies on me. Tried starting but it just cranked and cranked. Got it pulled over to a parking lot and then tried to start and I got it to run again. Died a couple mins later uo the road and it will not start at all anymore. I got it towed to my driveway and I've started diagnosing some things.
I dropped the tank thinking it was a pump I replaced awhile back. The pump wasn't running but jumped to conclusions and took it back to the auto parts store. They bench tested and it works fine. I checked for voltage at the pump connector. NOTHING. So I'm not getting power to Fuel pump. Then I checked the fuse and relay for the fuel pump. Everything was okay.
I did some research and decided to check for spark. NO SPARK. Another thing I noticed the other day was that the odometer is displaying all dashes. So I'm really unsure on what to really troubleshoot. I am going back to the truck tomorrow to check a few other things. I'm not sure if the Theft light is blinking or not so I will check that tomorrow and get back to you.
What to check? Any other relays or fuses besides the fuel pump? What about any modules to check like PCM, GEM, etc. Or I've heard the crankshaft sensor could be an issue.
Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: 1998 Truck Not Starting / Not Getting Voltage At Fuel Pump
I have a 1998 Ford F150 with 4.2.. Started off a intermittent problem of not starting acct no fuel. Now will not start at all. Checked all fuses and relays.. Am not getting voltage at fuel pump. Changed ECM thinking that was the problem.. Have checked all multi wire connectors for corrosion and tightness. Am at a lost what to try next.
Also, not sure if its related or not. The turn signals and hazard flashers do not work. When I turn on the hazard flashers, nothing happens. If I leave the flashers switch on, the turn signal work. Checked all fuses and relays and they appear good.

View 3 RepliesFord F-150 - 1997-2003 :: AC Compressor Clutch Broke
I have a 01 f150 4.2L and a while ago the ac compressor clutch broke. I didn't catch it in time and the stress it caused on the belt broke the power steering pump pulley. So I replaced the steering pump and pulley and the compressor the accumulator/dryer and the office tube put the 134a back in and everything worked fine. three months later ac stopped working. I figured the condenser was bad so i replaced it. Charged it up still no cold ac. so i thought maybe the manifold that goes on the compressor was clogged so i replaced it. While I did that i said to myself well i should tear out the dash and replace the evap as well. so just about everything has been replaced on the ac system.
Aside from the cycle switch and the high side switch witch from my test both seem to be working. now here is the thing. the tube witch holds the office gets ice cold then goes to the evap but the suction line coming from the evap doesn't get cold and the ac blows warm air. this very problem is what convinced me that the evap was clogged and needed to be changed witch is why i undertook the task of tearing the dash out. in all it took 14 hours to do the whole job. now for the pressures that i get from the ac manifold low side goes 40 down to 20 ..... this is normal. high side is a little high. I charge it to 125 still no cold air. so i dump a little more 134 in. at 90 degrees high side pressure should be around 200ish i get it there still no cold air. I have just about replaced everything i can think of.
Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: Radiator Plug Broke Off
I went to unscrew the radiator drain plug but the head broke right off leaving the rest of it inside.
I drilled out a little bit of it so I could drain the coolant and bough a replacement plug but there are still pieces stuck inside and I cant get them out.
Should I just drill out the remaining pieces or is there a better way to get them out?

View 4 RepliesFord :: F150 V8 Engine - Gas Smell On Fuel Injected Truck?
Today I was out test driving trucks. I found a truck that I fell in love with down the street from my mom's. It is a Ford f150 with a 5.3L Titan V8 engine with 4 wheel drive. When I went to test drive it with the initial turn of the key it smelled of gas but quickly went away. When I went down and had the step dad take a look at it we smelled it again but it went away even quicker the second time.
It has been sitting for 6mo prior to this drive other than it moving from Point A to Point be about 3 months ago.
Might I also add.. I bought the truck. My brother in law asked me if it was fuel injected and had that smell, I said "yes". He said I would have a big problem. Do I?
Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: Random Pinging Noise From Under The Truck
I just picked up a 1999 F150 5.4 with around 19k miles on it. Truck is in mint condition, stored in a heated garage since new. Before we made the deal I checked everything out pretty well including checking all the fluids, test drive, other usual stuff and didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. However, today I went for a short ride with the windows down I noticed a random pinging noise from under the truck. At first I thought it was a few small rocks bouncing off something metal under the truck, however it continued to do it randomly for the next 5 minutes. I would say I hear a ping every 15-20 seconds randomly. Doesn't matter if it's idling or under load, happens about the same either way. Aside from this, truck starts and rungs great and no error or warning lights have kicked on.
When I got home I started the truck back up and climbed under to see what it was. I found that the noise is coming from the exhaust system, mostly heard at the catalytic convertor. It resembles the metal expanding kind of ping, but I think its actually originating at the engine and the noise is just carrying through the exhaust system. I then went back to the engine bay and could hear the same random ping, just much quieter. I don't know the condition of the fuel, but based on the low miles I haven't ruled out a bad tank of gas. Only other issue with the truck is there is a bit of rust and corrosion on the inside of the exhaust tips and up into the exhaust pipe. They are still shiny and silver on the outside, just a little rust buildup on the interior of the exhaust. Hoping it's just the last 1' or so that is rusted
Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: V8 Truck Won't Start With Clicking Noise
It's a 97 with the 4.6 v8. I turn the key and the lights in the cab go out. A voltmeter on the battery reads 12.53 and doesn't drop at all when the key is turned. I took the alternator out and had it tested with a pass. The battery was replaced 2 months ago. I can hear the relay in the fuse box clicking away after the key is returned to the off position. Is my next step a new starter? Solenoid? Relay? This all just happened overnight. And it's only got 115,000 miles. The starter does not turn over...
View 7 RepliesFord F-150 - 1997-2003 :: Sensor Broke In Cylinder Head?
I have a 1999 Ford E150 4.2l. My cylinder head temp sensor was dangling but still connected to the sensor... the connector was loosed from the filament but was still connected by exposed metal pins.
I figured I would replace it like i did to my ECT by the Water Pump. So I pulled the connector out and it started to leak...a little. and when I put the socket on it I instantly broke the sensor flush with the Cylinder Head.
I researched on here and found many people believe the CHT gives info to the Dashboard Gauge and the ECT is used by the ECU. I thought that was correct because I had ECT readings from my scantool...and my Dash Gauge never worked. When I found the dangling CHT I figured it was never working.
So I JB welded CHT hole. figuring i would fix it properly later. I replaced the ECT and expected everything to go back to normal.. No gauge reading on dash and a scan reading with no codes.
I want to replace the CHT sensor properly. Do I HAVE to remove the manifolds. Or do you think its safe to drain the coolant and drill it out. Its easy access. Im worried about all the tiny pieces getting into narrow passage ways.
I am almost 100% going to drill out. Manifold sounds like hell and its getting cold. What sensor controls what? Can I drill it out safely?
Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: Clicking Noise When Truck Start Cold
Start truck cold, getting clicking noise...sounds like valve but runs great. Warms up and clicking goes away. Remove #1 spark plug and it shows build up of whitish carbon. Will remove the other spark plugs and check. Also starting to use half a can of oil a week. No leaks that I can see. Oil pressure gauge shows high...always has. Also, open door and get out after driving and smell oil. Wanted to make it to 400k but might not be able to with this issue.
Going to do a compression check to see what else is happening. Still have decent power. If cylinder pressure is good would it make since to do just a "top end" rebuild (if it is a valve issue? Should i pull it and do a complete rebuild? What does white build up on spark plug usually indicate?
Ford Excursion :: Strong Smell Of Gas At The Back Of The Truck / Fuel Tank Pressurizing
On a recent long drive home through some very hot weather, I noticed a strong smell of gas at the back of the truck. Now, I've caught a whiff of gas before the trip but it was always faint. Figured it was some gas that dripped on fill up.
At a rest area, I go and look around see no leaks and finally check the fuel cap. Lots of pressure trapped. I ended up leaving the cap off the rest of the run home. Can't find a cause.

View 2 RepliesFord F-150 - 1997-2003 :: Small Vibration On Dashboard And Noise Underneath The Truck
I have a 2001 Ford F150 with 165800 miles. I just had my power steering pump, PVC valve, and serpentine belt replaced by tire kingdom this Sunday 3/2/14.
After they replaced those parts, and I picked up the truck. I noticed the truck was making some new noises, these noises occur when I brake an it sounds like a small vibration on my dashboard and there is a noise underneath the truck. the sound also get louder when I roll up and down the window and run the ac. This had never happened before the repairs.
I took it back on Thursday 3/6/14 back to the mechanic and told them about the new problems. Now they said I had a brake problem. So they replaced the calipers, brake pads and rotors. But I still have the weird noise.
The truck still needs two rear tires a new high-end ac line and a freeze plug. Would any of these cause the noise underneath the truck or the noise in the dashboard or is there something else?
