Ford Super Duty (1999-2016) :: 2000 F250 - Shifting Late In All Gears / OD Indicator On Shifter Blinks From That Point Forward
My 2000 SD 7.3 has developed a quirk. For some reason the trans has decided to shift late in all gears. This only happens once, then resumes shifting normally. However the OD indicator on the shifter blinks from that point forward. Once the engine is shut down and restarted. The sequence starts again. Late shift, through the gears, once, then shifts normally with light blinking. Fluids are up and clean.

Okay, so I am not really sure where to post this. I have one of the weird 1999 F-250s that aren't a SD. The shifter is pretty loose, about 4-5 inches of play while in gear. Shifting isn't a problem, just the play in the shifter that I worry about. I have been trying to find rebuild kits, but can only find stuff for Rangers/Mazdas.

View 3 RepliesFord F-150 - 1997-2003 :: P/S Whine And Motor Won't Stay Running - OD Light On Column Shifter Flashes
2000 XLT ext cab 4.6 4x4 auto .. Having a couple of problems in below freezing weather when temps are below 30 deg F.
1. I have the usual P/S whine, but when starting up a cold engine, the whine is extremely loud and the motor won't stay running. It starts and immediately dies. I have to give it a little gas to keep it running. It only takes a few seconds until the whine dies down, then it idles fine. Should I just replace the P/S pump or is there something else I need to look at?
2. Again, with a cold engine, when I start driving, the OD light on the column shifter flashes. It flashed for quite a while. The tranny worked fine, though. No problems shifting. I was told that I have to have the dealer read the code and it can only be done when its flashing. Is this true? I'd rather not spend the $$ if its something I can take care of myself. I did change the tranny filter and that worked some. Now the light flashes for about 2-3 minutes then it goes away.
Like I said, these problems are only on days when its below freezing and once the truck is warm, everything works fine.

View 1 RepliesFord F-150 - 1997-2003 :: 2001 - Low Moan At 70 MPH Come And Go - Overdrive On / Off Indicator Flashing
I'll start with truck specifics. 2001 Ford Expedition, 5.4, automatic, 141,000. We just got the truck 4 months ago, second owners. Seemed reasonably maintained, other than Ball joints.
This afternoon, my wife and I were cruising along on this warm 90 degree summer day, out running some errands and having a good time ( we both had today off) about 70 miles from home. When we pulled into one of our spots, I noticed a few drips heading in the direction of under the truck. i simply thought the AC, which had been running full blast for an hour, was dripping, not a huge deal. didnt think twice, a few drops, no biggie. We ran a few other errands, then got back on the highway going 70 MPH. I heard a low moan at 70 that would come anbd go, I thought I may have had a tire howling on the road or possibly the start of the shifted belt. Noise was intermittent, but went away after a few minutes of driving. another mile or two down the road, I noticed the rear window seemed oily. Suddenly, things began to click, oil blow on the back window, funny noises, drips, something was leaking.
My eyes darted to the gauges, everything was holding up as i made it to the nearest exit another few miles away. As I hit the exit, i noticed the overdrive on off indicator flashing at me on the shifter stalk. I roll to the stoplight at the end of the ramp, suddenly, the tranny slips. There was no slipping on the highway. the truck did get a grip and get me from the light a few hundred feet ( there was a line of traffic behind me) to a parking lot where I could stop and inspect. as i shut it off and peeked under, fluid was pouring out of the bellhousing of the transmission. i called pops, he brought down the truck and trailer and we winched it on, dragged it home.
So, now the truck in in my garage, on the lift (yes, im spoiled) and I'm surveying the damage. oil leaks seem to be directed only from the bellhousing area, other places only have blow by residue on them. Fluid is a little dark, but not burnt smelling, and within tolerance. I see darker fluid at work when I do transmission flushes all the time.
So, now the questions. First off, I would be guessing that the front pump seal decided to go out, does that sound correct to you gentlemen? I'm going to start digging in on removing the transmission tomorrow, and hopefully get it out by the weekend. Also, from the fluid condition, do you think I got lucky, or do you think I did damage to the transmission?
As for knowledge and resources, I'm a mechanic, I do mostly brake, suspension, exhaust, and maintenance work (oil changes, tranny flushes, other stuff like that) so I do have a decent knowledge base, and while I have swapped transmissions before, I dont have a huge knowledge of tier inner workings. I do have access to a scan tool, and other diagnostic instruments, but as i stated before, not a full working knowledge.

My 4 wheel drive is not engaging on a 2001 F150. The indicator lites on the dash illuminate to suggest that the truck is in 4 wheel drive but sigh...it stays in 2 wheel drive. View 3 RepliesFord F-150 - 1997-2003 :: Battery Indicator Light On Dash Started Blinking Intermittently
Just bought my first F150. 1998 XLT 4.6l automatic. 126K miles, looks like it was mostly garage kept. All power, A/C, etc.
Picked it up this evening, drove it home after dark. About a 30 mile mostly highway speed drive. Everything went fine, no problems, no hiccups......Until I turned on my last street, about a half mile from home. The battery indicator light on the dash started blinking intermittently. I didn't notice anything else, just the red battery shaped light blinking.
What would cause this, what should I check? I don't want a big problem when I haven't even transferred the title yet!
Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: 1998 - Blinker Indicator Lights On Dash Illuminated And Stayed On
I have a 98 f150 4x4, 4.6L 150k miles, during start up the blinker indicator lights on the dash illuminated and stayed on, when trying the blinkers they did not work, but if I shut the head lights off the blinkers do work and indicators respond normally. This is the same if I turn the fan blower on, blinkers don't work and indicators stay illuminated. Also I have found that the power windows, and 4wd no longer work. Other functions work such as power mirror, radio etc. all fuses under the dash and under the hood are good, I tried switching some of the relays to see if that changed anything but with no success . took the kick panel off and inspected the grounds and all seem tight. It looks like the main battery ground is just to the body and there is one solid ground from the frame to the body under the cab. all seem tight and don't appear to be corroded. Truck starts and runs great.
View 8 RepliesFord F-150 - 1997-2003 :: Crank But Not Fire Or Start / Read Codes By Malfunction Indicator Lamp
Have a 2000 F-150, 5.4L. Once recently in a parking lot, it would crank but not fire or start. Wife called me to come get her. By the time I got there, she said it started "after she loosened the gas cap & re-closed it." But, it started fine for next several weeks. Yesterday it didn't. I read a bunch of threads here on possibilities. Many troubleshoot items I checked out or had done.
Chilton manual says you can get limited error codes from the light on dash flashing - MIL - Malfunction Indicator Lamp Method.
For now, I'm trying to find the 2nd, separate, one-wire lead "near or with the (main) Diagnostic Connector." They call the single wire / connector the "Self-Test Input connector" (STI). You're supposed to use a jumper between that STI & the upper, right connector of the main diagnostic connector. Then you (may) get flashes corresponding to codes via the key on, engine off method.
I see no such single wire lead or connector anywhere near there. Not up under the dash either - stuck my head under there & used mirror. There's a separate connector (not in use) clipped on the L side of the main diagnostic connector, but it has 5 pins inside. I took pics, but forum says I "may not post attachments." Been a member for yrs. That extra 5 pin connector faces toward firewall.
There's an "empty hole" - 1/4 in. (facing forward) in the bracket that holds the main diagnostic connector. Just above the main connector. Not sure if something was ever there
If no one knows how / if the Malfunction Indicator Lamp Method works or where the jumper goes, I'll be forced to buy a code reader w/o researching which are decent or crap (around $200 or less). I maybe? could wait to order one online (if knew which one). Also have AutoZone, O'Reilly, Advance, NAPA, PepBoys & others locally.
* The truck shows a check engine soon light, so should be a code already. * Yes, I tried her loosen / tighten gas cap trick.
* Also put a slow charger on for a while & even used the fast start setting on charger. No go, but engine turns really fast.
* Crawled under the gas tank & listened for fuel pump to activate when key is turned to Run.
* Fuel pump made a small noise - more like a relay or "clicking" - not a whine or whir.
* Checked most fuses - under dash & hi voltage box - that have anything to do w/ fuel pump, PCM & several others - mentioned in similar threads here.
Can't really check relays & don't want to just start replacing parts. I don't have a code reader & reluctant to buy one from local store w/o some reasonable research. (I don't mind buying one, but...). If I could drive it to the auto store, I wouldn't be asking this. Chilton's doesn't say if this malfunction indicator lamp method will work if a vehicle won't start. But, a code is already thrown.
Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: Auto Shifter - Cannot Get Into 1st With New Shift Tube
I've had a shifter-related short on my instrument panel and stereo lights for close to two years now, and it finally got so bad I had to dig in and decided to proactively replace the shift tube while I was digging in. After all, the existing one had 290K miles on it. Although the lighting issue drove me to replace the shifter tube in hopes of finding a damaged wire, but this issue has now been moved to a separate thread [URL] ...... The remainder of this thread deals with my difficulty with the new hardware.
So, I compiled all the info I could find on replacing the shifter tube and did the replacement on Saturday (Dorman shifter tube kit from O-Reilly's). The Dorman kit was fine, mechanically, and the parts fit together well. I did, however, have to smooth out some burrs and sharp machining edges where the new nylon bushings go just to prevent premature wear on them from the sub par machining cleanup a the Dorman manufacturer. I also inspected all of the wiring harnesses and connectors carefully, but could not find any evidence of a shorted wire anywhere.
Results... Shifter Movement: Overall, the shift movements are much more secure and smooth as butter, even though the shift arm itself still has slop in it where it gets pinned into the tube housing.
Now that it's all together, though, I can no longer shift down into 1st gear, and getting it into Park to release the key is tedious. I uninstalled and reinstalled the rear shifter bracket three times (the one which is typically related to not being able to get into Park and 1st). I carefully made sure that it was tight and completely flat against the rear of the shift tube each time. I just cannot tell why getting into Park is tougher than it used to be, nor can I find a physical barrier preventing it from getting it into the 1st gear position.
So here are my questions:
1. The steering column mounting flanges have some adjustment slop around the two rear mounting bolts, and the front two bolts also have minimal "adjustment" capability. Is ti possible that my entire shift positioning problem is due to not having the steering column physically mounted in the right alignment and that is restricting motion on the gear shift flex shaft?
2. If the answer to #1 above is "no", then what else do I need to be looking for to resolve this limited shifter movement?
3. There is a solenoid switch at the rear of the shift tube... is it possible that this is going out? I honestly do not suspect it because I have no trouble starting the truck when in Park, but I have not yet verified the effect of being in "R" on whether or not my backup lights come on.
