Passat (B5) :: 1999 - Transmission Slip / Fails To Engage For About Half A Second After Hitting Throttle
Every once in a while (maybe once a week) I notice that my transmission will slip (fails to engage for about half a second after hitting the throttle). Usually this happens after I have slowed down to almost a stop and then accelerate. The last time this happened I was on a slight incline (maybe 4%).
Is this something to worry about? Any easy way to test if this is an indicator of a big problem coming up down the road? The car has about 130k miles on it now and the transmission fluid and filter was changed at about 90k, the fluid level was checked by a VW tech so I assume it is correct.
Ford Excursion :: 2011 6.0 PSD Fails To Engage 4x4
I have a 2005 Excursion with 6.0 PSD just turned 80,000 miles. About a year ago, the vacuum hubs on the ESOF system became intermittent, so I changed then out with WARN manual hubs, which proved to be 100% reliable. Today, I got in the truck to move it, and engaged 4x4 High, as it had snowed last night and my inclined driveway was slippery. The hubs are locked, I get a lighted "4x4" idiot light on the dash, but the front wheels are not providing any drive power at all. I can hear the transfer case shift motor moving the gears, and if I select Low Range, the transfer case does change over to Low, but still no drive coming from the front wheels. I'm under the impression that the only things left to fail would be for the propeller shaft to be lying on the ground (it's not), the differential is not working, or something is wrong with the spindle shafts. Nothing has happened to the truck, and I have not heard any strange noises. I parked it 3 days ago, and everything, including four wheel drive, worked fine at that time. What may be going on here?
View 8 RepliesFord - Explorer :: 2004 - Automatic Transmission Not Engage?
I have a 2004 Explorer 4.0 4x4 with 130,00 miles that started with the transmission periodically going into neutral while driving and sometimes while stopped at an intersection. Engine running, but no reverse or drive gear. After shutting down engine and restarting, I can drive again only to have it happen soon again. I have changed rear speed sensor, throttle position sensor, dropped the tranny pan and changed the ATF as well as tranny filter.
I also attempted to replace the transmission range sensor but was unable to remove the nut that holds the shift level onto the sensor. Sent 5 hours one day.... nut will not budge. Now the shifter inside the truck does not feel the same when shifting through the gears. Now the transmission will only engage in reverse but the truck will not move. If I wait 30 sec or so the truck will move in reverse. No engagement in drive, 3rd, 2nd, or 1st.
Ford Super Duty (1999-2016) :: Tow / Haul Fails To Engage
2008 F-250XL, 5.4L V8, 5 speed auto, 3.73 rear.
Two/haul fails to engage and does not light up dash indicator light from time to time. After 4 or 5 tries it usually will engage normally. No codes.
Lexus GX 2010+ :: Sluggishness And Hesitation When Attempting To Accelerate
Previously, I would sometimes experience sluggishness and hesitation when attempting to accelerate. Now, the problem has become worse. Also, previously the issue occurred when I suddenly needed to accelerate to pass another vehicle. Now, I can feel it from take off, you really hear the engine struggling(the kind of sound you hear on an old 4 cylinder vehicle trying to go uphill). Sometimes, I feel the engine is struggling to keep the vehicle at a constant speed on a level road. Tried fuel injector cleaners like BG44K. While these injector cleaners are in the gas tank, the car runs smooth and has decent acceleration. Later, I return back to square one.
It is not that I have high expectations and am a power freak. I used to own a 2004 RX330 with 150K miles and that car ran better at 150K without any tune up then my GX460 with 60K miles. So, you can imagine my frustrations.
One more thing I noticed, it runs better when I just gas it up. One theory, could be the fuel filter is clogged. When I am suppose to change the fuel filter on the GX460?

View 3 RepliesGolf V R32 :: Intermittent Cruise Control / Fails To Engage
My cruise fails to engage, sometimes first thing in the mornings, sometimes in the afternoon, cold engine or warm, fresh start or on resume. After the car is turned off for a few, something is resetting it and it then works fine. Wondering if this has something to do with a faulty switch, fuse, or whatever. I've tried the cruise switch on the stalk in turning it off for a while, keeping it pressed in, turning it back on, everything.
View 6 RepliesHonda - Fit :: Transmission Noise (Windy Click) While Attempting To Downshift
I just got a new Honda Fit. 5 speed. I recently just hit some black ice and to avoid hitting the guard rail and other cars, I had to do some very odd maneuvering - a combination of e-brake, downshifting, and a whole lot of praying.
So here are my questions, during this scenario while attempting to downshift (unsure if I had the clutch all the way in) I heard a strange noise that sounded like a windy-click, like something retracting from a wound-up spindle.
Last question, pulling the e-brake. I felt compelled to pull the e-brake based on my fishtail and luckily it stabilize the car. This happened at about 25mph. Unsure if at that time if I had the clutch all the way in - did I do any damage to the transmission or the e-brake in this situation?
Ignition - Starters :: 1997 Grand Marquis Engine Turning Over But Fails To Start
We have an 1997 Mercury Grand Marquis. It isn't driven very much -- only about 25,000 miles total. Lately it has been having problems when we try to start it. Sometimes it starts right up, and sometimes it needs a few tries. When it fails, we can hear the engine turning over, but don't get to ignition.
We drive this car a couple of times a month. Is it possible this issue is related to the infrequent use?
Could this be something more serious? What do we even ask the mechanic to look at?
Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Fails To Go Into Reverse When Transmission Is Cold
I recently purchased a 2002 Jetta VR6 GLX. It drives fine when the transmission is warm, but fails to go into reverse and has a hard time shifting out of first when it's cold. I took it to my german mechanic friend who specializes in transmissions and he said that both the valve body and transmission need to be replaced. Problem is I don't have the funds to replace both.
The current transmission has 131000 on it.
Ford Transmission :: 2004 F450 - Transmission Will Not Engage In Any Gear
Just put the 6.0 back in the truck, engine working good now. Went to take it for a test drive and the transmission will not engage in any gear. I don't have any codes coming up on my scanner. Can not figure out why the transmission is not working from engine R&R.
- Fluid level is good
- Swapped wiring harness from my other truck and still nothing
Ford - Explorer :: 1996 - 4WD Low Does Not Engage
My new-to-me Explorer appears to switch to 4WD high but refuses to engage 4WD low. And now I have the 6-times-flashing 4WD and 4WD low dash lights when turning the ignition on.
I used the correct procedure: Stop the car, put it in neutral, and switch to 4WD low. Nothing happens.
I looked for a ground wire from the top of the transfer case to the chassis. I can't find any such wire. All the under-hood fuses are intact.
In the process of looking for the ground wire I discovered a capped 3/8 inch or so vacuum hose about 6 inches long with a right angle fitting at the front of the transfer case. I also found a capped 2-foot-long hose of similar size connected to the top of the front differential. What the heck are these hoses? Has somebody intentionally disabled the 4WD?
I am reasonably adept at electrical repairs, troubleshooting, and modifications..
Ford - Explorer :: 2003 4X4 Won't Engage?
I have a 2003 Explorer, I went to use the 4X4 the other day and the light comes on when I switch it 4H or 4L but nothing else happens. So I am thinking it might be the 4X4 mod. How can I test it?
View 1 RepliesFord - Explorer :: 2008 - While Pulling Forward 4wd Automatic Wants To Engage?
My wife has a 2008 Eddie Bauer 4x4 explorer and when you are backing up or pulling forward with the wheel turned, it feels like the automatic 4wd wants to engage. The Ford dealership mechanic told me this is normal but it does not do it all the time. Is there anything I can look at to try and figure out why this does it sometimes or if this is even supposed to do this at all?

View 1 RepliesFord - Explorer :: 2004 Explorer - Transmission Seal Blowing When Under A Heavy Load
I'm in a situation where I may be having to tow my 3500# boat/trailer with my '04 Explorer 4WD (this is well within the max tow limit, per the manual). I have the 4.0L with the 5 spd auto tranny and 3.73ls gears. I've towed the boat a handful of times with this vehicle and had a good experience every time. Now I'm looking at this being my primary towing vehicle, towing once or twice a month in the summer. The car only has 48000 miles on the ticker and is in pristine condition, so mechanically it's sound.
I asked my mechanic what he thought of this arrangement and he hates the Explorers, so he's giving a biased response. Have any of you towed something on a somewhat regular basis with this, or a similar, vehicle? Any issues? My mechanic keeps going on about the transmission seal blowing when under a heavy load.
Ford - Explorer :: Vehicle Takes A While To Engage In Reverse With A Loud Clunk
I have a Ford Explorer that my mechanic says needs a new trany. The vehicle takes a while to engage in reverse and does so with a loud clunk. Otherwise it runs good. I have 198K mi. It's an "02 4wd. Their asking $2,100 for the rebuilt trans. Wondering if it's worth it? May have reached the end of the line on this vehicle?
View 1 RepliesFord - Explorer :: 1997 - Trans Won't Engage While In Drive - Reverse Lost?
I got myself a 1997 explorer Australian model when I got it (here's the problem) if you put it in drive it will not engage but if put in first will drive normal then shift into second all good now u have push O.D then shift into drive all good (unless u slow down to almost a stop) ? New problem is, it has gone and lost reverse, put it in reverse and it engages with a small clank (normal) but just slips with any revs. I have read posts here talking about upper and lower valve body gaskets and transgo shiftkit which I have ordered but do there maybe more parts needed? Cause it's going to cost me lot just to put transmission fluid back in.
