Ford - Explorer :: 2008 - Howling Noise When Driving Between 50 - 60 Mph
My Dad has an 08 with the V8. When driving between 50-60 mph there is a "howling" sound. It is not noticeable at speeds lower than 50 or greater than 60. The sound reminds me of what you hear with all terrain tires when they are worn or a mud tire but not quite as loud. He has replace the tires with regular street treads and the noise is still there. He has checked for worn bearings or loose heat shields and everything is as it should be. What could this be coming from? What about the center drive shaft bearing mentions in this link?

Ford - Explorer :: 2002 - Front End Is Howling / Wheel Bearing Noise?
I'm working on a 02 explorer. The front end is howling so I replaced the left side and no change. The howl goes away when braking. Is it the right side then or something else? I replaced both front brakes pads so it's not that.
View 2 RepliesFord - Explorer :: Howling Noise From Power Steering Pump On A Cold Start At Near Zero Temperature
My power steering pump in my 05 Explorer 4.6L V8 is starting to howl it's displeasure on a cold start at near zero temperature. It doesn't do it when warm.
I thought I would change the fluid but the owners manual says to use Mercon ATF, but Ford now sells Mercon V as power steering fluid. It also warns not to mix the two kinds.
So, which one should I use? And, which way to change it, siphon pump the reservoir and replace with new a few times, or let the pump pump it out and replace as it goes?
Ford Brakes/Suspension :: 1997 - Howling Noise / Rear Tires Started Locking Up When Turned
I've got a 1997 Ford Expedition 5.4 with 200,000. So my rear differential leaks a few drops of fluid every time I drive it, looks like it's coming from the pinion seal. I've just been filling it topping it off with fluid.
Anyway, yesterday I got in it and started driving, I noticed a howling noise, and when I turned my rear tires started locking up. It was like that for about 5 miles until I got home, no matter which way you turned the tires would lock up.
I went under and topped off the differential with fluid again, and I pushed my parking brake in and released it. Got back in the truck and drove, and it was fine. What happened? I'm just worried it will happen again if I don't look more into it.
Golf V R32 :: Howling Noise Coming From Rear
Got a weird "howling" (best description) noise coming from the rear. Only happens when letting off the gas. As soon as I start to accelerate it goes away. Let off the gas it comes back. Started Saturday.

So here is the deal, as the title states I have a humming/ howling noise in the front end, gets louder when I turn left and quiet when turning right. I have replaced both side hub/bearings, and upon inspection I had a broke quick strut on the right hand side, also replaced that along with sway bar link. I've rotated tires, checked pressure and tread is all good. What this could be.
View 5 RepliesFord - Explorer :: 1996 - Rear Differential Was Leaky / Loud Whine Noise In Rear
Well i picked up a 96 4x4 with the 4.0 a few weeks ago and been fixing stuff weekly that i find wrong. One thing i noticed was the rear diff was leaky but couldn't get the fill plug out so left if for now. Last night my wife was on interstate and it just started making a loud noise so she pulls over calls me. I get there and drive it and it makes a woowoowoo noise and it got louder as speed increased. She was 3 miles from the exit so i drove it about 15-20 to get it off interstate than another 2 miles to her sisters. We let it sit for a few hours and found a flatbed to haul it home, and when we finally got home i drove it off the flat bed and now it was making a loud clunky noise. Parked it in drive till today. Cracked open the rear and no fluid came out.
Inspecting all the gears looked good no metal in bottom so i went and got a new rear cover and 3 qt. of fluid. Put it back together and the woowoowoo was still there but seemed to slowly go away as i drove it around the block. So what else could be going on here or do i need to drive it and warm up the fluid so it circulates? I also noticed a sheeee sound like metal on metal when braking but i changed all 4 rotors and both pads last week but i noticed the brakes in the rear that look like drum brakes was bare but i assume that is only for the ebrake so didn't bother changing them yet. Could those be hitting the inside of the rotor and making the metal to metal noise?
Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: Howling Sound Coming From The Rear End
I've recently noticed a howling sound coming from the rear end of my f150 from speeds of 45-60mph it goes away as soon as i get to 60mph and starts again very slightly at 80mph. I am sure its the pinion and ring from everything I have read online. a friend told me that it could be the pinion gear is worn out or it needs re shimmed or something. what parts should I look for to get this fixed? could it be a fluid issue? I dont want to have to spend much more on this truck....I love it but it seems like i find a new "noise" every week. Ive always been a chevy guy and to my surprise I REALLY like driving this truck and i want it to work out. What should i expect to pay for a repair like this? BTW it is and 04 FX4 with 84k on it.
View 14 RepliesFord Ranger / B-Series :: 2004 - Rear Brakes Howling And Locking Up
I have a 2004 Ranger 4x4, 4.0, auto and have trouble with the back brakes howling, locking up and generally driving me nuts. I've replaced the drums, shoes, cylinders, emergency brake cables and all the hardware. We've bled all 4 numerous times, blown out the lines, looked for leaks and done all we can think of. What am I missing?
View 1 RepliesFord Aerostar :: 1996 4WD Makes Howling Noise
I recently purchased a 96 4WD Aerostar off of eBay, from the USPS. It runs good, has no codes stored, gas mileage is what I expected, However, it makes and intermittent howling noise. Not usually around town, but almost always after a ride on the interstate. It seems to be coming from the air intake snorkle. This week my brother called a Ford tech he knows, who suggested it might be the "hooter hose" or the Idle Air Control. I've never heard of a "hooter hose" and can't find it on google. What's going on and steps to diagnose and correct this problem?
View 14 RepliesFord - Explorer :: 1994 - Horrible Noise From Rear
The last couple of times hauling wood with a trailer, the 1994 Explorer seemed to seriously lack power. Then I noticed there was an awful grinding noise coming from the rear. My guess is that the wheel bearings are shot creating an enormous amount of extra drag, especially with the added load of the trailer. Or what else could it be? How much should I expect to pay to have bearings replaced?
View 9 RepliesFord - Explorer :: Rear Driveshaft Is Causing Vibration / Noise
I suspect my rear driveshaft is causing the vibration/noise I thought was coming from the front. I posted a few days ago about how I suspected it was my front wheel bearings making noise. Now its vibrating real bad and feels like a universal joint.
Can I pull the rear driveshaft out and drive off the front wheels with the switch in the 4x4 position? Last year my wife drove for a few days with no front driveshaft as I had one on order. It worked fine, for that.
I just want to go for a test drive to make sure that its the rear shaft, and not something else.
Ford 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel :: 2005 - Developed Howling Noise?
2005 F250 195k miles. The truck has developed a howling noise comeing from what sounds like the driveline. It is most apperant at slow speeds with the windows up. It almost sounds like tire growling on the pavment but I can also hear it driving through the grass.
The last vehichle that i heard this from was my dd and ended up being a pinion bearing.
I put it on jack stands, removed the tires axles and driveshaft, spun the pinion yoke by hand it feels smooth. I also checked the rear hub bearings and they feel fine also. With the axles out and it up on jack stands i ran the truck and could still hear the noise. It almost sounds like it is comeing out of the T case output. The T case is a NP 271(manual shift).
Ford Explorer :: 2004 - Squeaking Noise Coming From The Right Rear Tire
2004 Ford Explorer4.0140k miles... For about 3 weeks or so i have been having this squeaking noise similar to the noise you hear when your breaks are worn out and you need to replace them. It sounds like it is coming from the right rear tire, i have changed all breaks all the way around and today i finally changed the rear passenger caliper thinking that it was causing the noise but it is still there. I am also driving on my spare which happens to be the same size as my regular tires it just does not have the rim on it.
I also found out that prior to changing the rear passenger tire it was wobbling and i did not know till a friend pointed it out, the rim does have a really minor dent but i am not sure if that was causing it to wobble or if the wobble is what caused the noises to appear. I have been driving the car for about 3 months and it started 3 weeks ago. There is also a clicking noise that i hear but i cant point out if it is coming from that side of the car, i can only hear it when i am driving slow.
Also the squeaking comes and goes, it is not always there and when it is there and i apply the breaks it is still there. I have done some research and a lot of people have a similar problem but the noise will go away when they finally apply the breaks, my noise still remains even when breaks are applied. What it can be, i did a little more research and now i am thinking it can be the ujoints on the driveshaft?
Here are a few pics of the dent i was talking about on the tire, could this minor dent cause the tire to wobble.....
Ford Fuel System :: 1974 F250 - Howling Noise Coming From Carburetor?
I have a 74 f250 with a 67 352 and a 2150 carb. I have noticed that after driving the truck for a while and when its nice and hot, if I shut it off I hear a funny "howling" noise coming from the carb. It does it for about 5 seconds, then goes away. I rebuilt the carb and it still makes the noise. Also when I am driving it, when I have the pedal at a certain point, I can hear a lot of vacuum, I have checked for vacuum leaks, and there are none. The other question I have is, the 352 was out of a standard shift truck, mine is an auto, so I have nowhere to hook my tranny kick down rod to. How I can fix that, besides replacing the carb?
View 3 RepliesFord - Explorer :: 1998 - Loud Banging Noise When Driving Coming From The Rear
My 1998 Explorer is making a terrible banging noise when driving. It appears to come from the rear. It only occurs when i step on the gas, gives a bang and the car shudders lightly. The bang can be gone for 10 - 30 seconds, and all of a sudden appear again. If I step hard on the gas, it will make a bang! bang! bang! noise.. If let my foot off the gas, it rolls quitely without any noise.
I have greased the slip yoke, inspected the U-joints, checked the rear calipers, opened the rear axle/differential plate - no metal parts or excessive wear were observed.. The transmission runs smoothly, there are no other noises apart from the bang. It is as if someone is hitting the car with a hammer from underneath...
Ford - Explorer :: 2002 - Rear Heat Thump Noise By Blower Motor?
Started up the 2002 EXP today and thought the fuel pump was failing. Get a consistent thump every 1 second. Later today i looked and noted the noise is coming from drivers rear fender well (i think). I took off the small plastic cover of the rear blower motor and thought it was in that area. Disconnected the motor and still thumps. Disconnected the blower motor resistor block and still thumps. Looked at the overhead consol and the rear blower was on HI. Turned the blower down and as you reduce speed the noise volume is lower. Turned the switch off and i thought the noise was gone. Pulled the cup holder above the fender well looking for a relay or something in that area. I cant isolate the noise but seems to be real close to that area. Later i heard the noise, very faint, and the blower switch was off. Turned it to 1-2-3 and it gets much louder. Turned it off and very slight noise. What am i looking for? My hearing is not accurate enough to find it.
View 2 RepliesFord Transmission :: 1995 - Constant Howling Noise Felt Like Something Banging Against Inside Of Case
I recently bought a 1995 Bronco. The rear axle makes a pretty awful noise. I put it on jackstands and ran it while I laid under the truck and it's coming right from the differential. It makes a constant howling noise and it felt like there was something banging against the inside of the case.
I removed the inspection cover and drained all the fluid out. It looked like chocolate milk, but the gears themselves all look fine. I didn't find any broken teeth, metal shavings, pieces of bearings, etc. in the case. It looks like a perfectly normal differential.
The truck has 166,000 miles on it and doesn't appear to be abused at all.
Here's a video I shot of the noise. You can't really hear the howling noise but the knocking sound is pretty audible. The frequency changes with the wheel speed. The sound is definitely coming from the differential.

Ford - Explorer :: 2005 - Whining Noise While Driving On A Normal Road With Rear Window Down
2005 Sport Trac 4x4... So, my fiance purchased this new off the floor before i met her (or else she wouldn't have bought it). Had a motor issue which required a new motor after 90k miles.. Anyways, while driving on a normal road, i dropped the rear window and hear this whining noise. Checked the transmission fluid and it was a little low, nothing major. Topped it off with Mercon V... No effect. Where do i look next. It does not have a tow package. Do i check the transfer case, or rear differential?.I am thinking differential because the transfer case is more upfront to where the noise is. you cant hear it with front windows down. Only the rear sliding window or rear passenger's windows.
