Accent LC (2000-05) :: Error Code P0442 Indicating A Leak In Evap Emissions

This began as a troubleshooting exercise for a P0442 code (2002 model) indicating a leak in the evap emissions system. Often caused by simple things like a loose/poorly sealing filler cap. Not this time

It's a neat design, tucked away up in the fender well. Even sports a very effective stone guard (plastic shield) which hides all that tubing from view. But the shield also traps all the road salt and mud and packs it into the crevices between the tubes where it stays from one winter till the next. Even a powerful car wash probably can't dislodge the caked on mess once solidified.

Camry :: OBD Code P0442 - Small Leak In Evaporative Emission Control System

Got an engine light on today and had it checked at Advance Auto. It is P0442, "small leak in Evaporative emission control system". One article I read said to remove and retighten the gas cap, clear the code then see if it occurs again. If it does then replace the gas cap with a new OEM cap, and try clearing the code again to see what happens, as a first step in the troubleshooting process. I retightened the gas cap, but don't know how to clear the code and turn off the engine light.

Sonata I45 (YF - 2011+) :: 2013 - Error Codes P0442 And P0456 Came Up

This last May I gave myself a graduation present and got a 2013 Sonata SE. I bought it through my Dad's friend's dealership at a pretty good deal and loved the car for the first few months, then things went South pretty quickly.

I've had more CEL issues with this car than I ever did with my piece of garbage 2000 Grand Cherokee.

The first time the light came on, I brought it to AutoZone who said I needed a new Cannister Close Valve. I then took it to my local Hyundai Dealership (Not my dad's friend's, I recently moved up to Ohio and that dealership was in Alabama) who verified that it was indeed the cannister close valve. They said I didn't need to get it fixed because it actually had nothing to do with the engine, but they gave me the part number should I want to buy it and switch it myself to save a few bucks. I bought the part from them and drove down to visit my family in the summer with the CEL on (who are in Memphis) to have my family's mechanic switch out the part. On my way down I stopped to get gas and, unfortunately for me, the gas hose kept clicking off like the tank was full after a quarter of a gallon, which obviously wasn't right. I brought it to my Memphis Mechanic and had them switch out the part, which they also said would resolve my fueling issue. They said everything was good, but on my short drive home (less than 10 miles from the mechanic) the light came back on. I turned around and my mechanic said he'd look at it. They then told me that I needed to replace a sensor in the EVAP system and that should solve the issue. For the rest of my time in Memphis, and on the drive back up to Ohio, I had no CEL, but I still had the fueling issue, but nowhere near as bad as it used to be. Once I was back in Cincinnati, however, sure enough, that stupid orangish-yellow light appeared back on my dashboard. I took it back to the Hyundai dealership who then wanted to charge me $500 to switch out the charcoal cannister which they were saying was the problem. To my great aggravation, they were unable to tell me that would solve my issue, but that it "should" fix it.

Well, yesterday the CEL popped right back on giving the same codes it's always been giving: P0442 and P0456.

Santa Fe (CM - 2007-12) :: 2009 - Error Codes P0464 And P0442

My wife has a 09 Santa Fe and we were getting code p0464 fuel sensor circuit intermittent. I changed both parts that need replacing. After about 20 miles now code p0442 small evap leak detected. I can only assume that it is coming from the fuel sensors that were replaced. Is there anything that I could have screwed up on?

Avalon 2005-12 :: CEL Error Code P0440 Error Code / Charcoal Canister Replacement

So of course it has to happen 3 weeks after my warranty expires. My CEL comes on and I have it read and the result is P0440. I find out that my wife has a habit of topping off the gas tank and so I am thinking that she has probably ruined the charcoal canister. It is something easy to replace?

I have an 06 limited edition... Yes, she will not be topping off any gas tank anymore.

Passat (B6) :: CEL Came On / Code P0442 - No Leak Detected

My CEL came on and I took it in to dealer. They replaced the EVAP line and purge valve. My CEL came on again that same week and supposedly it detected a small leak (sporadic, same code as previous), they ran test and did not detect any leaks. They finally told me that I might have to replace the canister if CEL comes on again for same code.

Chevrolet - Silverado :: 2009 - CEL Came On For Code P0442

The CEL came in on my friend's Chevy Silverado .....so he took it to the dealer for diagnosis/repair. After paying for the diagnosis and repair (supposedly he needed a new gas cap) he was good to go. A few days later the CEL came in. I have a code reader so he asked me to check the CEL code. It's P0442. The same code that the dealer sited. Since we know it isn't the gas cap what are the other most likely suspects? He says the truck runs fine. No drop off in MPG, no misfire, etc.

Camry :: 2007 SE Getting Error Code U0073

My 2007 Camry SE has an intermittent electrical issue. The problem started yesterday, no accidents of any time ever in the car. 195,000 miles on car.

As I was driving along the speedometer, tachometer, temp gauge all started bouncing. Simultaneously the ABS and Emergency brake light came on. The engine did not change, still drove fine. I got the code U0073. I checked a couple obvious fuses like ABS and Alternator as well as cleaning the contacts on the computer at the actuator. I've also checked my battery terminals -- fine.

I am hoping to narrow something down other than just going straight to replacing that ECU by the actuator. That is an expensive part not to be 100% sure of it, but as it stands now I would almost rather it be something "simple" like that because chasing these electrical phantoms is quite aggravating.

Also all the items I have focused are based off the assumption it is something electrical revolving around the ABS unit. Is it possible the instrument cluster is the culprit, wiring in the harness or a simple fuse related to that panel?

Camry :: O2 Sensor And Error Code P0137

Had my Check Engine light come on so I went by a local AutoZone to see if they could read the code. He said it was P0137, but what his reader can't tell is which one it is.

A co-worker pointed out where it was on my 2006 2.4, but I'm not sure if it's the sensor in the engine bay or the one closest to the catalytic converter. The engine bay looks easy to change out but I'm in no condition to be crawling around underneath.

Which sensor the P0137 is referring to?

Intrigue :: Code P0442 - Small EVAP Leak

So I have had this code P0442 for a long time and I just kept clearing it. The attached picture (at an angle) shows the hole in the small line attached to the fuel neck filler exactly behind where the plastic wheel well cover touches it. Just ordered a new one from rockauto for about 65 shipped.

Toyota - Camry :: 1999 - Error Code P1780

I have an automatic 6 cup and get a P1780 error code. Says to check neutral shift sensor, which I replaced. Code came back. Internet search says to try wire loom in trunk, driver side. Opens 2-3' of it and found no frayed or broken wires. All lights work fine. Car shifts fine. No other issues other than check engine light and that code. Where else to check?

Volvo :: Getting P0442 Code Periodically - Wrong Evap Canister?

I've been getting a P0442 periodically from my 97 850 wagon (base, no turbo). I've replaced the gas cap, the electrical part of the ignition switch, and all the deteriorated rubber vacuum-hose couplings I can find under the hood, but I'm still getting the code. I want to inspect the hose couplings at the evap canister, but there doesn't appear to be any way of getting to them other than removing the canister from under the car. Is there any other access to these?

Also, I've got VIDA running on my PC, and even though I've given it the VIN, it shows me the wrong evap canister in the parts diagrams. It shows the cylindrical canister, but my 850 has the rectangular canister. Where I can view accurate diagrams showing the evap components in this car?

Grand Prix :: SES Light On / Small Emissions Leak - Code P0442

About a month ago I had my SES light go on and I took it to the auto parts store and they said it was a small emissions leak. I am not sure of the code though. I took my car to the shop and they said that a sensor that had something to do with the exhaust was bad or unplugged.

My SES light came back on about about a week ago and I had it tested and it said the same thing. "Small emissions leak" This time I got the code and its P0442. The shop is closed today and tomarrow so what and where the sensor is located? Or if its the same thing?

Passat (B6) :: Evap Small Leak Intermittent Code P0442 Strikes Again

I've gotten the P0442 "small leak - intermittent" code and "service now" warnings on my 2007 2.0T Passat. I have also occasionally gotten the "check gas cap" warning and icon on the dash, but it always goes away quickly. The car runs fine. The VCDS scan shows as follows:

Address 01: Engine Labels: 06F-907-115-AXX.lbl
Part No SW: 3C0 907 115 S HW: 8P0 907 115 B

1 Fault Found:

P0442 - 001 - Small Leak - Intermittent

[Code] ....

If I clear this code, it comes back within a day or two of driving, but not immediately. I have already replaced the gas cap and N80 valve. The other component I'm aware of possibly failing is the check valve. It's just downstream of the N80 valve, circled in red here:.

I put a vacuum on this part, and it had a very slow leak, losing about 3psi (starting from 20psi) every minute. That seems too small a leak for this to be a problem? Is this thing supposed to be absolutely air tight? Since this part is more expensive ($80) and bit more hassle to replace than the N80 valve, I'd like to know more about this before I just blindly replace it.

If this check valve isn't the problem, then what to check? Although the car runs fine, I need an inspection and would prefer to not have to clear the codes and hope for the best just before taking it in.

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: EVAP Code (P0442) Small Leak Detected

so my girls car is throwing an evap code (P0442) small leak detected. I bought a new oem gas cap and replaced the purge valve solenoid under the hood. that didn't work, CEL still comes on about 100mi after clearing the code.

I have checked the rubber hoses that were attached to the purge valve solenoid when i replaced it and they are fresh, no dry rot or cracks that i can see. The hose on one side goes to a hard line that runs under the car to the back, the hose on the other side of the solenoid runs under the intake to the throttle body. That hose was fine as well. Connections were tight and i even put better clamps on the hose ends that attach to the solenoid. So I have ruled out that portion of the system (under the hood).

I also removed the rear seat to access the fuel pump. All those connections seem nice and tight, I don't smell any strong gas fumes indicating a leak so i don't think the fuel pump gasket is the problem either. Finally, i checked out the hard lines running under the car front to back and I see no apparent or obvious damage. I assume my next step is to pull off the rear passenger wheel well liner and asses the charcoal canister and the LDP connections, correct??

The last thing I will mention is, Idid notice the 2 fuel lines that attach to the fuel regulator are in pretty rough shape, however not leaking any fuel. Are both of these lines actual liquid fuel lines? I am thinking one of them is a vapor return which may be part of the EVAP system. If it's dry-rotted and leaking vapors could that be the culprit??

Pontiac - Grandprix :: 2002 - Service Engine Soon Light Has Been On / Code P0442 And P0128

Got a 2002 GT with the NA 3.8 and 150,000 miles. The car has pretty much sat for the past 6 months, driven very sparingly. If it's been sitting for a while (like over night or longer) it will start no problem. If I turn the car off for a shorter period, it will crank but not fire. It will start only if I pump the gas as I'm turning the ignition.

In addition, on occasions it has died while at idle or coasting to a stoplight. After it dies it will fire back up no problem.

Fuel problem perhaps?

The "Service Engine Soon" light has been on for about a month before it started acting up. I had the codes checked at AutoZone and it came up with P0442 and P0128.
