Subaru - Outback :: 1998 - Leaking From The Power Steering Pump And Valve Cover Gaskets
I have a 98 Subaru Legacy Outback with 133K miles. It was leaking from the power steering pump and valve cover gaskets. My husband replaced the passenger-side valve cover gasket (which involved removing the air box) and the power steering pump (which required removing the alternator). When we put the car back together and reconnected the battery, it no longer starts! It "clicks" once but won't turn-over. The car does not have an alarm system (but it was an option on this model). We've tried jumping it. The battery is about 14 months old. The alternator is about 10 months old and the starter was replaced about 10 months ago too. We've double checked the wires that were disconnected and don't think we've missed anything.

I returned from my 2nd Deployment on the 5th of July and noticed I had no (what I thought to be) brake fluid. SO i bought some DOT 3 and filled it. A month later(2 days ago ish) I re-filled again with DOT 3. As I put the cap back on I noticed it said power steering... So I found the guide here and flushed the power steering completely. I thought that maybe the brake fluid had just been squeezed out of the lines somehow but I was wrong. Sitting, the car drips power steering fluid. A resevoir every 12 or so hours. I looked at it and found that it is not coming from the resevoir or lines or from the pump area. Instead it is coming from what I assume is called the boot? It is on the driver side. Where the half shaft comes out from the tranny there is another smaller piston arm looking thing that is hooked up to the power steering system and from there it is just dripping out. And the fluid on the actual arm or w/e it is called.
Issue # 2: Anytime I turn the wheel all the way left or right I hear a pop from that side of the car to which I turn. Any others have this as well? Or could these two issues be related?
Jeep - Cherokee :: Power Steering Pump Leaking
I have a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee which I bought used. Last oil change they told me that the power steering pump was leaking. The leak was not enough to be seen, but it did seem to make some noise every once in a while so I took it in to get a new power steering pump at the dealer. Two days after they put the new pump in, power steering fluid was pouring out on the driveway, it was a really big puddle of fluid. I had to put new fluid in to drive it five miles back to the dealer. They said that it needed a new line, they were not sure why it needed a new line, they guessed because of the high mileage, 164,000 miles.
I told them that my Mercury has 287,000 miles on it and has never had the power steering pump replaced or the line either. I have driven most every car I ever owned 300,000 miles and have never replaced a power steering pump or line. But anyway, when the Jeep was supposed to be ready, they told me that the new line blew up spraying fluid all over the shop as soon as they started the Jeep and they had to get new parts so it would take another day or two. My question is what caused the new line to blow? My thinking is there must have been something wrong with the new pump or with the installation, somehow it was outputting too much pressure, anything that could blow a new line, would blow the old line.

took the car in today for an oil change (06 xls) apparently I got a small leak coming right from the power steering pump.
Apparently that is what he is telling me - could it be from the high pressure return hose? Is it better to get the unit rebuilt or buy a new pump? (I am going to try that lucas power steering fix in the interim), is there a recall or goodwill warranty on this?

View 4 RepliesFord Aerostar :: Power Steering Fluid Leaking - Pump Replacement?
Proud owner here of a '96 3.0L RWD Aerostar Utility Van with about 138k miles, and leaking power steering fluid. At this point I'm replacing fluid from zero every time I have to drive it which is about once a week. I've located the leak and it seems to be coming from the pump/reservoir around the pressure hose. The hose is loose as in i can move it around a bit, but from what I've read, this is normal and the hose is supposed to be like that. I figure that at this mileage, with so much air going through the pump, all the crazy squealing and whining it does even when full, at this point it probably makes sense to replace the whole pump while I'm in there, as opposed to just doing the reservoir. Anyway, I'm planning to do this in a couple of weeks, and have some questions...
1) The pump - I've read on this forum that the best way to go on brand of the pump is Motorcraft.
2) Hoses - I'd like to replace the hoses coming out of the pump while I have this thing all taken apart, but I'm not exactly sure what parts to get. I know one is the pressure and one is the return, but there are variations of each based on the research I've done. The parts on the Napa site have different descriptions like "with switch port", "without switch port" "56in hose" "26in hose", and so on. Which ones I need, specifically the ones connecting directly to the pump? I havent been able to find anything in my research online, in Haynes, or Chiltons manuals.
3) Washers - Whether or not I replace the hoses, should I replace the washers at the connection point? Chilton's seems to recommend replacing them. Will they come with the new pump?
My local auto parts shop has the pulley remover/installer for me to rent so I've already got that squared away. I'm pretty sure I've covered all of my bases otherwise.
Passat (B5) :: 1998 - Power Steering Fluid Leaking From Right Side
Bought a 98 last week and noticed an issue a couple of days ago. The car seems to be leaking power steering fluid from right in front of passenger front tire. Looks like it's coming down from somewhere behind the bumper, just not sure what line are over there. I had to replace one of the clamps on the line below the ps bottle and it seemed to be fine for 2 days.
The weird part is that it doesn't seem steady. I had the car parked in one spot for an hour the first time I noticed the problem and the wet spot was about a foot in diameter. But then I drove the car last night and left it parked in the driveway for hours and nothing. This morning when I was leaving there was a puddle about 4" in diameter.
Ford F-150 (2009-2014) :: Oil Slowly Leaking Near The Power Steering Pump Pulley
2010, 5.4L... Noticed a small oil spot under the truck this morning. Took it into the shop after work, we lifted it up, and ran it for 15 min to see where the leak was coming from, and the truck did not leak a drop... until we turned it off. The oil would slowly leak near the power steering pump pulley. But only when the engine was not running ...
View 1 RepliesLexus SC430 :: Rubber O-ring On Power Steering Pump Solenoid Valve Leaking Fluid
My car is in the shop and has a leak at the Power Steering Pump. The rubber O-ring on the Power Steering Pump Solenoid Valve (p/n 4417030120) is leaking fluid. The Solenoid Valve is ok, just the Rubber O-ring is bad, but it looks like you have to buy a complete new Solenoid Valve to get the O-ring (a lotta bucks).
I did find a Lexus Power Steering Pump rebuild kit online at, but I can't see if it includes the solenoid valve o-ring or not. Have to replace their solenoid valve o-ring?
Santa FE SM (2001-06) :: Power Steering Pump Is Leaking Fluid Onto Serpentine And Timing Belts Causing Them To Swell
So I have multiple issues that all seem to stem from a power steering leak. According to the dealership, the PS pump is leaking fluid onto the serpentine and timing belts causing them to swell. This in turn has something to do with the AC compressor not working but they wouldn't give me details. When I looked at the clutch wheels on the AC compressor, there seems to be a good amount of rust in between the two wheels. I can't say that I trust the dealership because the original owner was bought out by a larger group that is known to just say "replace everything". I usually do most of my own work on my 95 Tacoma, so I'm no stranger to import v6 motors.
View 4 RepliesCamry :: 2007 - Moaning And Groaning From The Steering
For the past year or so my 2007 Camry has had this groaning noise whenever I turn the wheel. It's not obnoxiously loud (you can't hear it from outside of the car) or anything but it's there and I know it's not normal. I'd taken it to a few mechanics including the dealer who all basically told me not to worry about it. I find this kind of frustrating as I would like the car to sound like it should even if it's not something threatening. Having had some experience with cars, I figured it must be either the power steering fluid or the pump. First I had the fluid changed with no success. A few weeks ago I finally broke down and had the entire power steering pump replaced. This was an expensive process so imagine my disappointment when I got the car back and the moaning was still there. It might be my imagination but I do think it's a bit quieter.
View 4 RepliesCherokee :: 2001 Groaning Sound When Turn The Steering Wheel
I have a 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport (128,000 miles) that has a groaning sound when ever you turn the steering wheel (and front wheels, of course). We were told by the former owner that it was the front wheel u-joints. I do not think that is the problem since it makes the sound when the Jeep is not moving forward or reverse. Is it typical for the u-joints or spindle joint (ball joints?) to make noise when they get older?
It makes a similar sound when I stand in front of it and try to push it up and down. When that happens, the car is not running and the wheels are stationary in all respects.
Ford 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel :: Power Steering Pump Making A Loud Whining Sound
My power steering pump was making a loud whining sound. No problem, changed the pump. Now after the truck is started I will have no power steering or brake assist, give the truck a little gas and you can hear the power steering pump "start". I have tried every way to get the air out, or is that not the problem. I even lifted the front of the truck off the ground with a forklift and with the truck off turned the wheel about six times stop to stop. Fluid level looks good and has since adding after the change.

I have a '97 Lexus Es300 1mz fe170k with a very minor oil leak. It's not a serious leak, but it's starting to get all over my power steering belt and making ugly spots in my driveway. The whole front of the motor is wet with oil, so I'm not sure exactly where the leak is coming from. I don't think it's coming from the oil pan, considering the power steering pump is soaked and dripping with oil (positive its not power steering fluid). There seems to be more traces of oil on the bottom of the rear manifold too. Thinking it may be a seal behind the timing cover, i pulled off the upper cover just to find the timing belt and pulleys bone dry and free of oil. I've attached a picture of the leak but where to look. The rear manifold is circled in white.
