Diabetes :: Type 1 & Type 2 - Insulin And Metformin?
So I am a type 1 diabetic where I take insulin injectables for my insulin needs. I have taken shots for as long as I remember, well now I am 15 years old and my mom is diabetic. I see that she takes pills for her diabetes. She says she is type 2 diabetic. I want to know why she can take pills and I have to take shots? She is on Metformin so I would like to forego the shots and take the pills.
I would like the effects of the Metformin so I know how it would help me with my diabetes. I want to start on it as soon as I can. I would be able to go places without having to take a shot all the time. I need to go to somewhere private and leave my friends when I do my shot.
With the medication I don't have to do that. Does anyone know about Metformin and can tell me about the side effects and stuff?
Diabetes Type 1 :: Using Metformin
I just wondered if someone could give me some information on taking metformin with type 1 diabetes? I’m currently using lantus and everything seems fine with my bloods and I’ve got good control, but one of my friends is also type 1 and just started using metformin as well as her insulin. I’m just a bit confused cos I thought that was for type 2’s and wondered why she was taking it? Also, if she’s taking it, should I be? Or is it just specific people. If it means I’ve got less chance of getting other problems with my diabetes I’d take it, it’s just that no-one’s ever mentioned it me.

My mum is a recently diagnosed type II diabetic and although she's tried to control it with her diet she's still ended taking metformin. She takes them with her meals like she’s been told, but she’s still getting sugar lows and feeling dizzy and shaky. She doesn’t drink that much and I can’t don’t know enough about it.

I have type 1 diabetes and take insulin for this. I have had diabetes for a long time and I am very use to my injection regime. My doctor has now said that I need to take metformin alongside, but I thought metformin was for type 2 diabetes.
View 2 RepliesMetformin In Type 1 Diabetes? Along With Insulin?
I’m a type 1 diabetic and have been since I was 10. I got it after I’d had a virus so have been using and injecting different insulins since then. But recently my doctor has suggested that I start taking metformin cos I’ve had a few problems keeping my bloods okay over the past few months. I thought you didn’t need metformin if you were a type 1 diabetic – I thought it was just for type 2’s?
View 1 RepliesDiabetes Type 1 And SR Metformin Along With Insulin?
I have a doctor who wants me to take SR Metformin . I am a type 1 diabetic and I already take insulin. When I was 6 I developed it. I have taken shots since then. Now that I am 25 my doctor wants to see of Metformin will help me. I am a bit overweight and not skinny like I was in childhood. He thinks I will benefit from this pill. What do u all think? Is it a good idea to be on a pill along with the insulin I take? I don't know if anyone else who is type 1 does this too. It would be nice to know if I can be ok on both. What is SR? I have heard of Metformin but never with the SR in its name. I hope someone knows about this. I have a friend in Maine that has type 1 but doesn't need any pills to go along with his insulin.
View 1 RepliesDiabetes Type 2 - Best Time To Take Metformin?
I am still "technically" considered pre-diabetic. I take 500 mg of Metformin a day. Can anyone tell me what is the best time to take it? I have read several post that say to take it with the biggest meal of the day, is that the general consensus? Is there anything else I should consider?
Yesterday, I took my dose at the usual 6 o'clock, but I wasn't able to eat until around 8 (I know this is not ideal). My bg was still 143 until around 1:30 am.
Diabetes :: Hypos On Metformin (Type 2)
I'm on Metformin for my diabetes but have lost weight over the past 2 years, at my last annual check up I expected they would review my meds due to the weight loss but they say that my blood sugars are good and they want to keep me on the Metformin as its working and doing its job well. Increasingly over the last couple of months I've been experiencing what only seems like 'low blood sugars' dizzy spells, extreme hunger pangs that make me experience nausea (like the morning sickness nausea that low blood sugars cause whilst pregnant) so I bought some test sticks for my glucose meter this week and have been testing since yesterday. So far it seems my blood sugars are on the low scale, not quite what you would call hypo levels but considering I've only taken them whilst sat at home or at my desk I would imagine they probably drop lower when I'm active. 3hrs after eating yesterday they were 4.1 (74), and this morning 1.5hrs after my morning coffee they were 4.9 (88), whilst I know these aren't that low I have read that some people suffer symptoms in the '4' range of blood sugars - I've been told that I will not suffer Hypos on Metformin, but with these readings I am starting to think that maybe I might be now suffering with low blood sugars even though I'm eating a well balanced diet throughout the day. Does anyone else experience symptoms at these levels or on Metformin?
View 3 RepliesDiabetes Type 1 And Metformin Or Insulin - What's The Difference?
I am a 18 year old and I have been a type 1 diabetic all my life, pretty much. I have been on insulin as long as I can remember and I was wondering about getting off of it and taking metformin. Or maybe not take as much insulin and take metformin to replace the insulin I don't take. It would be great to not have to take insulin as it cuts into my activities and my life. I hate to inject myself before every meal and it gets to be a pain. I would think that after all of the technological advances we have that type 1s can't have the option of taking a pill. What gives? What's the difference between taking insulin and taking a pill other than that a shot is painful?

6 months ago my Doctor suggested stopping my Metformin as my Hba1c's seemed to always be around the 35 level which I believe is about 5.4, just repeated my Hba1c after 6 months without any meds & it's gone up to 45 (6.3) I struggle with diet as have many allergies & can only eat a small number of foods which are mostly high car, I know when I see my Doctor on Friday she will ask if I want to go back on Metformin or carry on with diet control. I'm 43 & don't want to cause any long term health issues & with my limited food choice wonder if I'm better taking Metformin - any advice appreciated before my appointment
View 5 RepliesDiabetes Type 2 :: Taking Metformin, Gliclazide And Byetta
I am a type diabetic and I am taking metformin, gliclazide, and Byetta. Is this usual to have so many things to take care of my diabetes? It seems like it is overkill in my opinion. With having to watch my diet on top of it? Why watch my carbs when I take all of this medicine? Seems a bit odd to me.
What does everyone else take for their diabetes? I have been diabetic for almost ten years now and it seems that I get more and more medicine ordered and my insurance pays for it now but what about when I have to pay for it? It will be impossible to even think about it. And to pay for test strips on top of it.
Is there any way I can get off some of these meds? I don't see why I am on so many. I should be able to take just one and get by. Any ideas on what I need to say to my doctor about it?

View 7 RepliesDiabetes :: Differences Between Metformin And SR Metformin
So I was talking with a friend of mine who has diabetes like me and I told her that I was taking Metformin. She said she takes SR Metformin and I asked her what it was because mine doesn't say SR. She showed me the bottle of the prescription and sure enough it says SR Metformin. Does anyone know what the SR is in this prescription Metformin? Is it something that is new on the market? I wonder if I should be taking it too?
She doesn't seem to get the diarrhea like I do with Metformin. If that is the reason, I want to start taking it because I don't like some of the other side effects I get with it.
I hope someone can shed light on this. I would like to know more about it from other people . It is hard to know how pills act from reading the list of side effects that are listed on some websites. It is better to know first hand by other people.

Diabetes :: How Much Metformin ?
I was curious to know about the medication called metformin. It is for diabetics to help their bodies secrete more insulin. But I heard that patients may also lose weight on it. Yes! It's true! I am a type 2 diabetic and I weigh about 260 and I think this medication would be great to have. I need to lose a bit of weight and this medication can help me two ways -- help me lose weight and lower my blood sugars. Has anyone else been on this medication and lost a lot of weight? I hope to lose at least 50 pounds so that I can see my blood sugars go down better. Maybe I don't have to watch my carbs so closely either.
