Allergies :: Delayed Reaction To Penicillin?
Last night I came up with horrendous lumps, bumps and itchy mosquito type looking rashes all over my body. I have been on Penicillin for about 10 days and only started getting itchy on my scalp maybe a day or so ago, and now these symptoms have seemed to broken out into something very severe!!
The spots keep changing and moving into different spots all over my body, on my face, in my ears, on my knees, arms, hands etc.
The doctor gave me (Prednisone) which is a steroid hormone. This has helped the itching. They say it couldn't have been the penicillin, otherwise I would have reacted far earlier than after 10 days of treatment...
But then I looked at some academic journals, which stated that you can have 'delayed' drug reactions to antibiotics, sometimes a week after first taking them??
I did eat seafood a day or so ago ...but usually am fine eating shellfish etc.
It looks like someone has severely beaten up my legs with a pole! These huge golf ball size hives, very bizarre!
Anyway... my question is...has anyone else had a 'delayed' reaction or unpredictable reaction to antibiotics/penicillin?
Tendon Rupture? Delayed Reaction To A Fluoroquinolone Antibiotic
If you have ruptured a tendon, particularly a large one ie., Rotator Cuff or Achilles and you aren't sure why, then consider whether or not you have taken an antibiotic in the Fluoroquinolone/Quinolone group, in the previous year. If so, then please refer to discussions on Ciprofloxacin or Levofloxacin or Fluoroquinolones, as you may be suffering a delayed adverse reaction. This can happen long after you have stopped taking these antibiotics - there are others in this class too.
View 3 RepliesRheumatoid Arthritis :: Enbrel Delayed Reaction - Huge Red Spots
My Dr gave me a sample of Enbrel to try while waiting for my insurance to approve treatment (they didn't but that's another story).
The Rheumy nurse attempted to show me how to use the pen and pulled the pen out too quick and squirted most of the medication on the floor. My Rheumatologist gave me another pen and told me just to do it at home since I was comfortable doing it myself. That was two weeks ago. Today I have these huge red spots a small one where the nurse tried to inject and a huge one where I injected.
It's very sore and is getting more bruised looking as the day goes on.
I had been on a prednisone taper and have been off prednisone for 2 days now. Has anyone had a delayed reaction like this? Or maybe the prednisone was keeping this at bay? Your thoughts please?

View 38 RepliesIs It Possible To Get Tetanus Even If Vaccinated?
About 3 or 4 days ago i was in taiwan (thursday in taiwan) i was biking and hit a rusty railing and got scraped on my leg. I'm back in the U.S. now and i got a Tdap in 2007. However, since yesterday i have had a stiff jaw, but I'm not sure if this is because or because of the fact that i have a bad teeth clenching/grinding habit or maybe i have tetanus. When i was on the plane back I clenched my teeth pretty hard in my sleep(about 2 days ago) and i had some tooth pain and now my jaw has been stiff for about a day. I'm not sure if i had been clenching my teeth more in my sleep since then. I'm reluctant to go to the doctor because i do not have health insurance.
View 1 RepliesCyclizine Reaction - 9 Weeks Pregnant
I'm 9 weeks pregnant, and today was admitted to hospital with severe morning sickness and dehydration. I was in a&e, and at this point, sick, tired, but generally in good spirits, no anxiety, and to be honest, pleased about being given fluids at last!
I was then given a dose of Cyclizine in my IV, I'm not sure what dose it was. Literally as soon as it went in, I immediately had a very strong urge to vomit, which I managed to fight off. I started to shake uncontrollably, and felt very 'woozy'. The nurse didn't even give me the whole dose, he decided to stop at the point. He then left, and my boyfriend had to call him back in. I went as white as a sheet (according to the boyfriend), was still shaking uncontrollably, the nurse did my obs, and my heart rate was about 150 bpm. I became extremely anxious, with a feeling of impending doom. I was apparently not acting 'normally' for me and not speaking properly. I tried to get up, but my whole body felt extremely heavy.
For me, the whole episode felt to last a long time, but my boyfriend states that it lasted no longer than 10 minutes. The shakes took an hour to wear off completely, and the heaviness, at least 3 hours. This evening (12 hours on), I still feel anxious and 'not quite right'.

View 5 RepliesNight Muscle Spasms After Microdiscectomy L5/S1 (2 Weeks)
2wks ago, I had a very large herniation removed and I did great the first week, but I think that I am now having muscle spasms. I see my doctor for my first post op visit this week. I have been in a back brace since the surgery and only take it off to sleep (am a side sleeper). This week, I think that I have been having spasms at night. I know that it's not nerve pain b/c I know what that feels like. It feels like a tightening and ache and is scaring me b/c it's in my back and leg, where I had the previous nerve pain. Are these spasms? I have not slept all night. I got up and walked around, but I don't know if I should be walking while in pain. I do have Valium, which was giving to me as a muscle relaxer upon release from hospital, but am getting no relief. Is this common and are there any tips?
View 2 RepliesSjogren's Syndrome? Pain On First Bite - Neuropathy, Blurry Vision, Muscle Pain
I came across this syndrome when searching the Internet about extreme pain I have when I take the first bite EVERY time I eat and sometimes drink. That this could be a symptom of this syndrome but I don't know. I do have some of the other symptoms, i.e. neuropathy, blurry vision, muscle pain, fatigue but these can also be associated with Type 1 Diabetes which I have. Also, came across parotid/salivary glands are affected which also can cause the jaw to ear pain I'm having. Has anyone heard that the Coxsackie virus can have anything to do with it? How do you know for sure if it is Sjogren's and what type of doctor do you see about it - a primary?
View 1 RepliesHysterectomy :: 5th Week Post-op - Waist Muscle Pain And Upper Abdominal Pain
I am on my 5th week post-op TAH (removed uterus, cervix and Fallopian tubes). I was recovering well in the past few weeks with reducing pains.
Of all sudden, I had a painful swelling abdominal and soreness/pulling pain around waist yesterday coupled with giddiness and headache. Is it normal having a regression during recovery period? Any remedy members could share esp. now I still can't exercise. I put on an abdominal binder now to ease the pain slightly.
Gabapentin :: For Fibromyalgia / Neuropathic Pain - Bad Reaction
I was prescribed Gabapentin for fibromyalgia like pain - neuropathic pain. About 90 mins after taking one 300mg capsule I was experiencing some strong side effects. My spatial sense was distorted - I seemed bigger or smaller than I usually experience myself. I kept hearing indistinct voices - whole sentences in voices I did not recognise. I felt intense nausea. At one point I caught sight of my face in a mirror and had the feeling that the image was somehow independent of me, and that the face there was malevolent, and I was unable to break away for several minutes despite quite strong fear. I went to bed and as I lay there I felt like I was not quite in my body - lying beside myself somehow. My mind was caught up for a while in a series of incredibly violent and distressing daydream-like images over which I seemed to have little control. My body twitched and convulsed irregularly - although I've experienced this with intense anxiety and at this point I was really quite afraid! I woke early after a fitful sleep with an intense headache - behind the forehead, temples and also pain in my neck. Also some nausea. The headache lasted all day and into the night. It felt on a par with a moderately bad migraine (maybe 7 out of 10). I was unable to do much of anything except lie down and wait for it to pass (pain killers had no discernible effect on the level of pain).
That was one pill of 300mg. And needless to say I won't be taking another, let alone the prescribed 3 a day!
Doxazosin :: Horrible Mouth Pain, Muscle Pain, Anxiety
I was put on doxazosin after a period of great stress (xmas), and although it's lowered my BP, I've had horrible side effects.
I've had the racing heart, swollen ankles, breast pain, chest pain (muscular), sore throat, sore jaw, headaches, anxiety, etc.
I was on 4mg for one day and my right leg gave out from under me, so I went down to 1mg.
Since then, I haven't had that the leg caving thing (thank God!), but I feel very unwell.
I feel heady, like I have a very bad cold. My nose hurts, my throat hurts, my teeth hurt, my ears hurt, and the roof of my mouth hurts.
The anxiety the drug induces is magnified because of the side effects, and the side effects increase the anxiety. The anxiety raises my blood pressure, and the cycle goes on, ad infinitum.
Cyclizine Reaction - Chest Pain, Twitching And Convulsions
I had a stomach operation in April, and on the day I should have left hospital, I felt sick.I was given this drug by an I.V. access in the back of my hand. The nurse hadn't even finished the jab, when I got a horrendous chest pain, followed by the most excruciatingly uncomfortable 4 1/2 hours of my life! My whole body started convulsing, like someone had connected me to 40,000 volts, and it was being sent through my body every 30 seconds to a few minutes at a time. I have a heart problem, and I don't think I should of had the drug, even though I have had prochlorperazine(a similar anti-sickness) drug in the past. I can assure you, this was not just a mere reaction to the drug. Since surfing around the net for some answers to my symptoms, I've found that they were that of a cyclizine overdose, although, I think the dose was possibly correct ! Steer clear of this drug if you haven't had it before, especially if you have heart trouble. This event has scarred me for life, and if anyone comes near me with it again, I'll personally shoot them. Take note, drugs have horrid effects sometimes.

View 1 RepliesMetronidazole Reaction :: Flu, Dizzy, Chest Pain And Body Aches
I was prescribed metronidazole 200mg for a tooth infection, yesterday. I took 1 tablet as prescribed with a glass of water and food at lunchtime. Soon afterwards I felt confused and slightly dizzy, cheeks flushed. After work, approx 3 hours later I was frozen and aching all over - like a bad dose of flu, couldn't keep awake, kept getting stabbing chest pains, my back and legs were and still are very painful - keep taking paracetamol to ease the pain. I have quite severe head and neck ache and have no appetite. Have a dry mouth and have been drinking lots of water. As for the toothache - that seems to be the least of my worries. At the moment I feel very washed out and weak. The Dentist has given me a different prescription and can't understand the symptoms I have described. It is now 24 hours since taking tablet and I am now feeling a bit better.
View 1 RepliesMuscle Disorders :: Generalised Stiffness And Right Calf Muscle Wasting
When in bed at night I struggle to turn over or move as I feel so stiff and sore. Once out of bed and moving I am much better. I initially find it hard to become upright after sitting for any length of time. About 2 years ago my daughter noticed my right calf was much smaller than my left one. I cannot raise my self onto my toes on my right leg due to loss of muscle/strength in the affected leg.
I have had blood tests, nerve stimulation tests and a muscle biopsy. My CK level from my blood tests was slightly raised, my nerve study tests were abnormal and my biopsy only showed minimal change.
I now cannot raise my arms above shoulder level to the front and if I walk at a quicker pace my lower back feels like I have no support and I get pain around my lumbar region.
I go spinning 4/5 times a week and cope with this very well. It's as though once I'm warmed up my stiffness diminishes. I am 51 and have only one period every 3/4 months , I have been to the dr's re the menopause but have been told all my blood tests are normal.
i have been referred to a neurosurgeon and neurologist with ? A form of muscular dystrophy but now my muscle biopsy result has not shown the expected result.
i struggle going up and down stairs often. I feel so fed up with my inability to do what I want to do as I have always been an active person. I have put weight on and cannot motivate myself to control my diet.

View 8 RepliesSimvastatin :: Muscle Pain And Wasting In Both Legs
I was on simvastatin for 4 years and developed bad pain in both legs when standing up. I have to steady myself before I can start walking. I have CK in my blood tests. I was told by my doctor to stop taking the statins. I have got worse in my legs after 6 months. Doctor put me on another statin. When I read the same side effects as simvastatin I didn't take any. I couldn't believe that doctor would put me on a tablet that caused the same bad side effects. I will be going to have my blood tests done soon but would like to know whether anyone has asked about sueing the statin drug company and would the doctor be helpful about it?
