Laryngopharyngeal Reflux :: Throat Clearing, Hoarseness, Swallowing Difficulties

I was initially diagnosed with LPR for my symptoms, which were constant post nasal drip, hoarse voice, and a click when I swallowed.  I have since figured out it wasn't LPR at all, and that all the protocols for LPR only make things worse.

I came here to hopefully help others who may have been told they have LPR when really, they have something else.

The symptoms of LPR are exactly the same as the symptoms of nutritional deficiencies of B vitamins, vitamin A, and iron.

In particular, a riboflavin deficiency will dry out the soft tissues of your throat so that you feel every tiny drip of what is actually normal mucus.  Riboflavin is a B vitamin that is not stored in the body and you must eat it every day.  Dairy products, something many of us with mucus are told to avoid, are very high in riboflavin, and one of the best sources.  Stress, illness and certain chronic conditions can increase the body's requirements for riboflavin, causing deficiency symptoms, like a dry, post nasal drip in the throat.  (In my case, I became deficient due to an undiscovered thyroid issue.  When the thyroid is not functioning properly, you do not metabolize riboflavin.)  Mild riboflavin deficiency will also cause dry, itchy or burning feeling of the eyes.

Other B vitamins which affect the throat are niacin and folate.  Iron deficiency causes tongue and throat swelling and can even cause webbing of the esophagus.   Vitamin A and zinc also affect the mouth, tongue and throat.  Iodine is essential for the salivary glands.

Certain health issues can affect the metabolism of nutrients.  You can be deficient even though you get plenty of it in your diet.  Your genetics, your diet, and your current health conditions all affect your nutritional status.

Proton pump inhibitors and acid reducers can make things worse by reducing your absorption of nutrients.

If you want to try some vitamins to see if they will help, start with the water soluble B vitamins.  I recommend taking coenzymated sublinguals which melt under your tongue, so that you don't have to worry about whether you are digesting and metabolizing them properly.

Sore Throat :: Swollen Tonsils, Lump In Throat, Clear Mucus, Sore, Headache

My tonsils have been swollen for over a month, until last week they were painless, but now I have flu symptoms. Its quite scary, it affects my swallowing and I have a very very dry mouth, even when I drink loads of water all day. Hasn't affected my breathing as of yet, but feels like a lump in my throat is blocking it off.

This has been going for three days now.

Doctor said I need a blood test for glandular fever, which is next week.

I mentioned that I think I can feel my epiglottis swollen, and she laughed and said that is all the way down by my adam's apple and would have a job feeling that... even though i've seen many cases online where it's visible above the tongue and often can be felt.

Avamys Causing Sore Throat

I have recently started using Avamys nasal spray, my docs think i have some congestion which is making my throat lump feel worse, even though its related to reflux they think.  I have noticed in the few days that i've been taking avamys that my throat is really starting to hurt, wondered if anyone else using avamys had noticed this?

Temporomandibular Joint Causing Sore Throat?

So, my TMD seems to be presenting in an unusual way. Rather than getting earaches or migraine symptoms, I'm mostly having trouble with my throat, neck, and nose. For the longest time people were telling me it was sinusitis. I even went on Cipro for 4 weeks. Anyway, the thing is that my throat doesn't just hurt, it kills. It'll start up stinging and within an hour or two it'll be raging, often for longer than a day. My jaw starts to quiver and I get pain all over my face: tooth pain and pressure, an extremely sore neck, a totally congested nose. And everything becomes tight: it feels weird to open my mouth and rotate my neck, and lying down doesn't make anything better either.

So my question is: does anyone have any idea how to deal with a sore throat caused by TMJ? Ibuprofen doesn't seem to put a dent in the pain and ice packs on my jaw help for all of ten minutes (and you can't put ice packs directly on the inner throat muscles where the pain is coming from anyway). Whenever one of these comes on (generally about every 4 - 5 days), I feel like I'm completely helpless. 20+ consecutive hours of terrible pain is just so hard to deal with.

I'll be seeing a physical therapist tomorrow who will hopefully help me come up with exercises, etc... to prevent an "attack," and I'll also be seeing a dentist later in the week to see about getting a possible oral splint. I've already tried adjusting my posture, relaxing my jaw and neck, eating soft foods... the dreaded sore throat still seems to strike no matter what.

Anxiety :: Excess Mucus

I'm 69 & only have had 2 significant health issues over the past 7 or so  years:-

1) BPH with a permanent indwelling catheter for 3 years..

2) chronic mucus production.

the BPH has been recently sorted with a TURP but the mucus problem is still ongoing.& seems to be triggered if i want to go out or do some simple task in the house - i just cough it up  to the point of being sick - the mucus is clear, sticky & sometimes frothy.

strangely the "attacks" never happen in anyone's presence & when i was in hospital for the TURP & before that for 2 weeks suffering from urine retention "the attacks" never happened at all.(??)

Sore Throat :: Sore Throat, Overall Ill Feeling No Diagnosis

sore throat, fatigue, pain, no diagnosis Posted 10 minutes ago I'm sorry for the long post but I really need some help. I am 25 years old, female from Bulgaria. Everything started after 2 shots of progesterone done by my gyno. I had high prolactin levels and somewhat low progesterone and my period stopped so that is why she gave me shots. After the second shot I woke up with very bad pain and burning sensations in my sinuses,my whole body was in pain. And there it all begins. For 2 weeks I wasn't getting better, I had a fever (not very high),sinus pain and sore throat. Finally I visited a ENT doctor, she said that there was nothing wrong with me,everything-ears,nose throat looked fine but I asked for a sinus x-ray-it was also fine. Then my gyno advised me to culture my throat and nose. The results were staphylococcus aureus in nose and Moraxella catarrhalis in throat. I was prescribed cefpodoxime (due to antibiogram) took it for several days and I wasn't feeling any better, then my dr switched me to Cefuroxime,it did help at the beginning,I was feeling better but by the time I was taking my last pill all the symptoms returned. My sinuses didn't hurt anymore but my throat was on fire, muscle and joint pain, feverish feeling but no actual fever this time. So I was put on unasyn (Sultamicillin) on IV drip.I was getting no relief and was just feeling very sick from that med,so we stopped it. The I went to another ENT doctor and he told me there was nothing wrong with me, my throat looked fine and I had a little wound in my nose with blood. I had no runny nose. So I did a culture of my throat again and it happened to be Candida Glabrata ( may be because of all those antibiotics) I also had e.coli in my urine.I took one dose of Fosfomycin for my e.coli and it cleared up and I was put on IV  drip again with fluconazole for my candida.I also had candida in my vaginal results. I started to get better on fluconazole but again it lasted 3 days and in the end of the treatment I was ill again. My ears started to hurt very badly, all other symptoms continued.I waited 2 weeks after the last antibiotic and did a nose and throat culture again in two different labs and there was no infection found, I also did a vaginal and urine tests again and the urine was fine, had some enterococcus faecalis but in small amounts from my vag microbiology. My gyno said that it is better to not treat it for now because of all the meds I took for those 2 months. Yes,it's been two months and I am only getting worse, my whole body is in pain,I am very fatigued, have the flu feeling sore throat, ear pain, lymph and joint pain,I feel very very ill. And the tests say nothing. On my blood test the only thing that was abnormal was my AST  (antistreptolysin-titer) levels were high 310 (from 200 being the norm).Went to a 3rd ENT,he also said everything looked fine, my ears and throat are not inflamed and he said that it wasn't my ears that hurt but my face joints. So I am here, desperate for ome help, not getting better, not knowing what to do now.I started having very bad panic attacks because I think I am dying and no one can find what is that illness. Can it be some autoimmune response to the progesterone shots? I don't know anymore. It's a struggle to get out of bed really.

Pregnancy :: Constant Throat Clearing With Mucus Sometimes

I'm 20 years old and currently 28 weeks pregnant, for the past week i have been experiencing the constant need to clear my throat/chest, sometimes there's no mucus to cough up and sometimes there is, not sure if i've become over sensitive to my throat or what? I suffer a great deal from heartburn and possibly acid reflux due to stomach contents coming up in my throat, could this be from pregnancy related issues or something more serious?

Nose / Sinus :: Constant Mucus In Throat

Ok so I've had this problem for over 2 years, and its the biggest pain ever. I ALWAYS, and I mean ALWAYS feel Mucus in the back of my throat, I can't clear it away by just coughing it up, or spitting it out, I have to suck it in me. I really try to spit it out, but I can only spit it if I let it build up for awhile, other than that I have to suck it up, and while doing that I make a really annoying noise....something like blowing your nose really really hard, but even worse noise. I talked to my parents but they never believe me, they tell me: Its Psychological, and I've adapted a bad habit. But I SWEAR I can feel it always. We've been to a Allergist, and he said its maybe Sinus, or Post-nasal drip. He said the Mucus builds up in my nose, and drips down to the back of my throat...Although I can't feel the drainage from Nose to throat, but my nose is pretty blocked up. The Allergist said this started because of a past allergy, and I agreed. 2 years ago I had severe Allergy, and once the allergy left, this problem continued on till today. The Allergist recommended Nose drips, and Allergy medicines, but they never helped not even a bit. Next we went to a Nose and Throat Specialist, and she checked my nose and throat and said: Its Psychological, and I've adapted a dirty habit. But I SWEAR on my life, I feel it 24/7 in the back of my throat, but no one believes me not even the DOCTORS! What shall I do PLEASE help. This Mucus is always there, and by clearing my throat (Spitting, Sucking whatever), its makes a noise, that every hates, even MYSELF!!!  PS. I tried drinking salt water and everything.

Allergic Rhinitis - Sneezing, Dry Cough And Throat Mucus - LPR?

After having a throat scope just over 1 year ago (this was done because following a bad virus my voice was croaky and I thought I might have LPR).  The consultant said nothing sinister going on and I was diagnosed with allergic rhinitis.  I could tell you a lot about other symptoms including ear pain sinus problems etc but the thing that gets me down is the dry cough and throat mucus (which I still wonder might be lpr).  The question I would like to ask is after a sneezing fit I get awful throat mucus which has to be hacked up for around 30mins then it starts to subside.  I cannot find reference to anyone with this symptom, nor does my gp know why it happens.  I should add that in 2001/2 following a cold I had a sinus scan which was clear but was diagnosed with mild asthma.  In 2007 I suffered from some sort of virus which lasted weeks and this left me with the sneezing and mucus but as it was only occasionally I just got on with life.  I had a sinus scan around this time but it came back normal.  Late in 2104 one night afer eating some chocolate I started with throat mucus worse than ever and tried cutting out foods and improved although not completely.  I have had ppis over the months but they just upset my IBS.  I eventually had a throat scope as mentioned although most of my symptoms had gone during the wait for the appointment.  I notice now after any cold which is always worse affecting sinuses etc I have a flare up of this throat mucus this time round a week after finishing antibiotics for sinus infection I am sneezing a lot coughing etc.  I was given dymista for the rhinitis but did not take it have tried other similar from the gp but they just dry me up.  I also tend to have  bouts of oral thrush from my inhalers even though I rinse out.  I think that stress plays a big part in all this.  I am quite anxious at the moment due to family things.  Anyone have this sneezing and mucus symptom.

Reflux Oesophagitis :: Thick Mucus And Throat Clearing?

So I've really been through it with my GERD and I've had a year and a half of hell. I'm just starting to see some improvements but now I've got this thick mucus at the back of my throat that gets stuck there, I can't swallow it as it doesn't move much but when I cough it does come up, then slips back down.

I'm constantly having to cough and clear my throat, the mucus tends to sit right near my gag reflex so it's always uncomfortable!

Migraine For 2 Years Following A Very Bad Tonsillitis

I have suffered migraine for 2 years following a very bad tonsillitis.  The symptoms have progressed to the point where I have had to give up my high pressured job and my memory is becoming increasingly and worryingly so bad that I cannot remember what I did a few minutes earlier, names of medications etc.  The main symptoms are a tearing feeling at the top of my head, liquid running down the back of my throat causing me to cough or swallow as well as noise intolerance which at times is unbearable. I saw a neurologist for 6 minutes. I am seriously thinking of ending it all and I have weighed up all the pros and cons.  I cannot take this any longer.  I cannot believe this is just migraine.  I cannot understand why nothing is helping.  My life is all day pain.  If nobody can give me some reason to try something valid then its goodbye.  I have had Gabapentin with moderate  benefit, Candesartan with no benefit, and stopping all the usual painkillers.  Sumatriptan did not help.
