Sinusitis :: FESS Performed How To Avoid Sneezing With Allergic Rhinitis
I had the surgery at 3.30pm yesterday and felt amazingly clear until about 4am when the common runny nose and tickling sensation started to build and at 4.20am I sneezed. I kept my mouth open as advised but my tongue clamped to the back of my teeth so not sure it helped. So much mucus and blood came out and it set off a few seconds of a nose bleed, it's now 8.45 am and I'm concentrating 100% on not sneezing again but it's so hard. My nose is filling up with clear, runny allergic mucus and I don't know what to do.
Anyone else had this?
PS I've wikied how to prevent sneezing and used all go their tips on pinching and pressing, etc!

View 4 RepliesAllergic Rhinitis Due To Dust
So I have severe allergic rhinitis which I was told by a ENT specialist a few weeks back. I already had the idea in my head that it was this but it has finally been confirmed. From there I had a blood
Test done for an allergy test. But I find that I am very sensitive to dust and If that's what the test comes back with, what can the doctors do? It's not as if I can avoid dust for the rest of my life because it would be impossible! I'm very confused as to what they will be able to do? But they must be ae to so something right? I have an appointment again really soon to get the results back so I shall know for sure! It does sound a bit stupid but I'm just worried about having to be miserable for a long time or until I grow out of it- which is only a possibility and might not even have it. If anyone else has it here, do you know what triggers yours? And what the doctor did about it?
How I Treated My Allergic Rhinitis
I have a predominantly obstructive form of perennial allergic rhinitis with multiple allergen sensitivity.
Negative stress aggravates it - positive stress alleviates it. Jogging and exercise helps to overcome nasal airflow resistance for me and seems to reduce the sensation of blockage - a lot of good consistent exercise definitely improves rhinitis in my case e.g. swimming, jogging, running, cycling.
Irregular sleeping hours and too much sleep can provoke an attack in my case.
As many people will agree, it can have a significant impact on sleep, cause tiredness, lack of concentration, irritability, tension, nausea, post nasal drip, dryness and can have a serious impact on relationships in work and at home.
I found that nasal spray corticosteroids don't work consistently in my case - they don't always prevent my attacks from occurring, even with long term use. This is only my experience though!
I use a prescribed formulation of medicinal herbs prescribed by an approved medical herbalist - I have found them to be more effective and longer lasting than any other treatments I tried - single herbs I found did not work. I use this constantly throughout the winter and intermittently during the summer.
Plaintain and eyebright compound is good for the dryness I experience in the winter and is good for clearing the mucous.
Nasal saline irrigation can be very helpful also to clear mucous in the nasal cavity for me.
Fisherman's friend and airwaves chewing gum is very useful to make me breath through my nose more easily.
I have fewer attacks now (almost a normal life) that I use the herbal medication, compared to when I used only steroid sprays.
But when I do have the odd attack, I immediately begin using betamethasone sodium phosphate drops (betamethasone is a potent corticosteroid). I usually need them for no more than 5 or 6 days because I feel that they lose their benefit if using them long term - the medicinal herbs are my long term treatment.
A useful method recommended by my ENT consultant was to invert my head over the back of the bed when using the drops, and wait a few minutes - this allows deep penetration into the sinuses - (i believe that there is a sinus called the ethmoid sinus deeper in the nasal cavity)
If my nose gets really blocked up, I will use an oral decongestant, phenylephrine hydrochloride (60 mg) (short acting) and take these for a few days (this can also help the betamethasone drops get to the right place as it is a vasoconstrictor). I find that this decongestant, in my case, does not give me the shakes and nervousness that pseudoephedrine does.
Rhinitis :: Excessive Mucus Production
My problem is the excessive production of mucus. It has been going on for about 12 years or so (I am now 58) and it is getting worse. Embarrassingly, it happens mainly when I eat (usually halfway through eating a large main meal, but also when eating hot and spicy food). It's embarrassing because nobody wants to share a meal with somebody who has a perennially runny nose.
It also happens, bizarrely, when I sit on the loo in the morning, when my nose runs non-stop! I have no idea why.
It also happens, albeit less spectacularly, in my sleep. This means that I usually wake up in the middle of the night, wheezing. About three years ago my doctor diagnosed asthma, and a Ventolin inhaler does help ease the wheezing, but the main problem is coughing up phlegm. Once I've cleared that off my chest (with difficulty, sometimes), I usually feel better. But increasingly I am dreading nights, because sleeping (ie lying down) causes that congested feeling and wheezing chest.
When I do strenuous exercise, particularly in cold weather, my chest seems to seize up and breathing gets difficult. This is accompanied by a noticeable increase in my heart rate, which I can feel thumping in my chest. Again, Ventolin seems to help here (which I guess is why my GP diagnosed asthma three years ago -- although I never had asthma as a child.
Other side effects include lack of smell or taste. They really are very poor (practically non-existent) these days. But is this a by-product of getting older? After all, my hearing is much poorer these days and that is obviously not caused by excessive mucus!
I gave up smoking ten years ago. I am about 3 stone overweight (6ft 1in and 16st), two stone of which I pile don after giving up smoking. I work (mainly) in an office environment.
My doctor has prescribed Beconase nasal spray, which is only partially effective. Sometimes it seems to have no effect at all.
To be honest, my GP was pretty disinterested, so I haven't returned in over two years. In fact he retired about a year ago and I have yet to go and meet his replacement, because I expect I'll again be fobbed off. After all, my "illness" must appear rather insignificant to an overworked doctor dealing with patients with life-threatening and nasty diseases.
In other words,if you can give me any pointers, regarding what the problem is likely to be and what I can try, I am very happy to sort this out for myself.
Anybody else recognise any of the above?
Ear, Nose And Throat :: Cough And Taste Of Blood At Back Of Throat
Before I rush to a doctor and look like a hypochondriac I thought I'd shoot a question here:
I woke up this morning and I have been coughing/gagging all morning and can taste blood in the back of my throat, I have not coughed up any blood though.
I have been trying to quit smoking since 2011 and have been a smoker since 1991.
I am also on SR Hydromorphone (Jurnista) for severe chronic back pain.
I am also on 800 Mg Carbamazepine (as a Mood stabilizer NOT for Epilepsy)
As well as Mirtazapine (for chronic Clinical Depression)
And Atenolol for mild Hypertension.
Anyhoo, as of this morning I have been hacking up a storm, as of 2 hours from waking up I developed a sore throat (I believe from the hard coughing) I have not coughed anything up but the coughing gets so hard it becomes dry-reaching frequently.
And that taste of blood waay down in the back of my throat is ever present after each cough.
As I have depression and mood disorder, I don't want to go straight to the doc as quite often individuals with mental health issues don't get taken seriously here in Australia, quite often I would get told "Go to your psychiatrist" as if I am crazy. and in the past I ended up in trouble with serious health issues that went undiagnosed simply because some peanut G.P. thought it was all in my head, until I ended up in hospital sometimes in quite serious condition.
So I was wondering if someone who understands this coughing issue could be could shoot me an answer first.
I am meant to go to University tomorrow (I am studying for a Psychology Degree) and I want to be at my peak for study if at all possible.
Sore Throat :: Swollen Tonsils, Lump In Throat, Clear Mucus, Sore, Headache
My tonsils have been swollen for over a month, until last week they were painless, but now I have flu symptoms. Its quite scary, it affects my swallowing and I have a very very dry mouth, even when I drink loads of water all day. Hasn't affected my breathing as of yet, but feels like a lump in my throat is blocking it off.
This has been going for three days now.
Doctor said I need a blood test for glandular fever, which is next week.
I mentioned that I think I can feel my epiglottis swollen, and she laughed and said that is all the way down by my adam's apple and would have a job feeling that... even though i've seen many cases online where it's visible above the tongue and often can be felt.

Its been two scary months with a really bad cough. I went to the ER after the first month and they said it was a virus, a week later went to urgent care and they gave me antibiotics for bacterial infection, two weeks later got worse went to urgent care got a steroids shot and asthma treatment went home with steroids, albuterol and continue to lose oxygen when coughing randomly. I am very scared because it happens any time while sitting, talking, eating, sleeping and I think I'm going to stop breathing each time. My eyes turn shot red and I get like headed with a desperate sound of getting my breath like if I was being choked. I just went to the ER after a scary episode and both my lung and throat x-ray came back normal. Has anybody dealt with anything similar to this? If so please help. I will call an ear, nose, and throat specialist tomorrow. I also feel an acidic flavor and fleming sitting on my throat All the time.
View 2 RepliesPregnancy :: Constant Throat Clearing With Mucus Sometimes
I'm 20 years old and currently 28 weeks pregnant, for the past week i have been experiencing the constant need to clear my throat/chest, sometimes there's no mucus to cough up and sometimes there is, not sure if i've become over sensitive to my throat or what? I suffer a great deal from heartburn and possibly acid reflux due to stomach contents coming up in my throat, could this be from pregnancy related issues or something more serious?
View 6 RepliesNose / Sinus :: Constant Mucus In Throat
Ok so I've had this problem for over 2 years, and its the biggest pain ever. I ALWAYS, and I mean ALWAYS feel Mucus in the back of my throat, I can't clear it away by just coughing it up, or spitting it out, I have to suck it in me. I really try to spit it out, but I can only spit it if I let it build up for awhile, other than that I have to suck it up, and while doing that I make a really annoying noise....something like blowing your nose really really hard, but even worse noise. I talked to my parents but they never believe me, they tell me: Its Psychological, and I've adapted a bad habit. But I SWEAR I can feel it always. We've been to a Allergist, and he said its maybe Sinus, or Post-nasal drip. He said the Mucus builds up in my nose, and drips down to the back of my throat...Although I can't feel the drainage from Nose to throat, but my nose is pretty blocked up. The Allergist said this started because of a past allergy, and I agreed. 2 years ago I had severe Allergy, and once the allergy left, this problem continued on till today. The Allergist recommended Nose drips, and Allergy medicines, but they never helped not even a bit. Next we went to a Nose and Throat Specialist, and she checked my nose and throat and said: Its Psychological, and I've adapted a dirty habit. But I SWEAR on my life, I feel it 24/7 in the back of my throat, but no one believes me not even the DOCTORS! What shall I do PLEASE help. This Mucus is always there, and by clearing my throat (Spitting, Sucking whatever), its makes a noise, that every hates, even MYSELF!!! PS. I tried drinking salt water and everything.

So I've really been through it with my GERD and I've had a year and a half of hell. I'm just starting to see some improvements but now I've got this thick mucus at the back of my throat that gets stuck there, I can't swallow it as it doesn't move much but when I cough it does come up, then slips back down.
I'm constantly having to cough and clear my throat, the mucus tends to sit right near my gag reflex so it's always uncomfortable!
Sore Throat :: Tonsillitis - Excess Mucus Causing Swallowing Difficulties
I am 16 years old and have been experiencing my latest (and worst yet) bout of tonsillitis for the past 4-5 days. I have been taking soluble aspirin and paracetamol, and today my GP prescribed me some soluble penicillin antibiotics to help fight it off. However, I am experiencing lots of thick green mucus in my throat and a yellow-greenish coating of mucus on my tongue that just will not go away no matter how many times I spit it out. The mucus is causing many difficulties for me in terms of swallowing food and drink, as (with drinks) either I swallow some of the mucus with the fluid or the drink mixes with the mucus and ends up stuck in my throat.
I am going on holiday to Egypt for a week on the 26th June so I really need to get this cleared up before then! Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can alleviate the pain and get rid of all this mucus?
Viral Infections :: Cough Syrup Suppresses The Cough?
I am at the end of a cold (2 weeks)and I have a bad chesty cough. I'm up in the night like a cat with a furball.
I saw my doctor who advised to use honey and lemonade, and Vicks vapour rub, but said to stop using the covonia chesty cough syrup, as it suppresses the cough.
Is that correct ? I always believe it contained ingredients to help break down the congestion.
