Reactive Arthritis :: Swimming And Cycling Best Excercises

Like others here, I've had periodic reactive arthritis since the age of 10. I'm now 33. If you're not into swimming then cycling is in my opinion the best alternative exercise for joints, probably because you're not jarring the joint, or causing undue stress, the same as with swimming. I cycle to work every day, ten mins each way, and it really helps the early morning pain in my knee. The docs say to me 'if it's not causing more pain or swelling then do it.'

My left knee has always been the problem joint and the swelling always impresses even the most experienced orthopaedic specialists. In the past I regularly defied doctors advice and played football once the swelling had subsided enough to make movement comfortable, though the knee is always huge again the next day and has taken a week or so to reduce in size.

I'm now in the middle of another bout of Reactive Arthritis (from food poisoning abroad, which is nearly always the trigger for mine). I was on crutches for 2 weeks, though not hospitalised this time and am not going to risk a set back in recovery so am resisting the urge to play football this season. This arthritis started in April and from experience I'm hoping to see the swelling settle down in the Spring. Takes around a year for me each time. For me the key to getting through is to keep as active as I can with a gradual increase in sports until the swelling reduces completely, while not pushing too hard too soon.

Knee Problems From Cycling?

Is it possible to have certain knee problems from cycling? I’m thinking about buying a bike and starting training but I’ve read something about various health problems that can occur due to cycling I started to worry a bit. Is there a way to prevent all these disorders? I don’t want to start cycling and then instead of improving my health end up in worse condition than when I started.

Bone / Joint :: Knee Pain: Ligament Tightness Behind Knee, Slight Knee Pain Under Kneecap

So I dislocated my knee in January of this year.  I was given a device that isolates my knee cap and hold it in place.  I wore the device off and on over the year whenever my knee would feel sort of irregular. I worked out routinely to help strengthen my knee, it helped the pain somewhat, but mostly just made me feel better about the way I looked, and kept me healthy.  I haven't worked out since some time before Thanksgiving.  Starting this week i've started to feel this new akward feeling behind my kneecap, sort of like the ligament behind my knee cap is tightening, sort of similar to how it felt when I dislocated my knee, but not exactly the same.  I get the pain after fully bending my knee, for example when I am on my knees doing my job stocking shelves at work, when I stand to my feet I can usually feel the pain.  I try doing a couple of different stretches when to make the feeling go away a bit, but it comes back, and then it eventually goes away again.

My knee "pops" (makes a loud popping noise and pressure) pretty regularly now but when I get off of work and off of my knees I experience the discomfort much less. I want to start exercising again on Monday, but I am scared I might dislocate again.  I will try using the knee cap device again tomorrow, but I feel as though whenever I use the device, it makes my knee feel like jello the next day, and make me want to use the device again, even though I was advised by my doctor that I should not need to use it regularly. ....

Running With Injuries :: How To Deal With Shin Pain?

I actually began running about 2 months ago, starting with a run 2 minutes, walk 4 and trying to gradually build from there (I m a college student, and had been walking quite a lot, around 4 miles, to and from class each day prior to beginning running). Problem is, my shins have been giving me a LOT of problems. I'm not sure what to do and am becoming quite frustrated...I've tried new shoes (currently in nike prestos, I love the shoes, they are the most comfortable things I have ever worn in my life!), gradually building up my runs, stretching, taking rest periods when they start to hurt...and as a result have not been able to increase mileage at all!

Should I run through the pain? I am guessing these are just shin splints...is it okay to run through these, do they go away? Is there anything else I can do? If anyone has any advice at all, I would really appreciate it. It is driving me nuts not to be able to run! I am trying to "rest"...so for the past month and a half have only been running about 2 days a week, with each run only about 15 minutes long.

Fitness :: Burning Pain In Side Of Neck While Running Or Working Out

I have begun to run over the last three years and really enjoy it. Starting last year I have begun to get a burning pain in the side of my neck while running and sometimes during strenuous workouts. It seems to be in the area of the carotid artery. It is usually on the left side but I have experienced it on the right. Could it be a form of heartburn or should I get it checked out. I'm only 35 and have been quite active but don't always eat the best.

Allergy :: Eczema After Swimming

I do a lot of swimming and can't find a decent remedy or barrier for eczema. To be honest I control it pretty well but it flares up to the extent that it is incredibly uncomfortable and it is always the next day after I have been swimming. I then end up taking an antihistamine which makes me drowsy and then has an affect on my training (doing an ironman) for the days that follow. Can anyone recommend anything?

Atrial Fibrillation :: Sleep Issues And Cycling

I started with a really fast and irregular pulse and heartbeat last Wednesday night and took myself off to A&E. I spent the night wired up to a monitor and had a saline drip with some other medication to try to bring down the rapid heart rate. During the night I had an injection of a warfarin type medicine (claxon?) and beta blockers. The following day I was taken to the Coronary Care unit where I was given a further injection and more beta blockers, bisoprolol fumarate. I met with the cardiologist she explained that I had Atrial Fibrillation, although my heart rate had come down the irregular beat was still there. Further treatment a couple of months down the line were explained to me but now, one week after discharge I have a few questions I would like to ask fellow sufferers who have permanent atrial fibrillation. Oh, I am currently on 5mg of bisoprolol fumarate and 3 mg Warfarin.

1. Do people have any tips for getting off to sleep, I can't seem to settle at all with a banging heart even though my pulse is sort of normal, (with a few missing beats).

2. I have just come back from a cycling holiday and usually walk about 4 miles a day, after a very slow walk today I am exhausted, any tips on getting back to normal.

3. I saw my own GP yesterday and he said that I should get back to 'normal' cycling etc, I did ask if I could have a glass of wine or beer, he said that's fine, however I have read that this  can make the AF worse. Any thoughts?

Lichen Sclerosus :: Cycling With Vulva Issues?

In a bid to get fitter, I bought a mountain bike, since I did used to love cycling. I guess I did not think it through and realized so, once I sat on the very hard seat.

Any tips for people who are cycling currently with vulva issues? I have seen some saddles with what I can only call 'slits' in, which seems like a good solution, since the pressure on the vulva area would be less?

I also read that wicking away material is good and I to measure one's sitting bones. (Not an easy task).

So, question. Any other ladies managing to cycle with LS on the vulva? I also suffer vestibulitis, vulvodynia. However, not to be thwarted (!) I am happy to look at a new saddle. It would appear one with a cushy part for the sitting bones and a slit for the vulva to relieve pressure is the way to go?  Any tips, any experiences, that may help would be much appreciated. Or, names of seats (that are not too expensive if possible).

Calf Muscle Tightness After Running

I've just recently started running. At first it went fine, and I began to gradually increase my endurance and speed, really happy, etc. etc, until recently, I've been struck down by a mysterious malady.

While I run, my calves tighten up, and it becomes nearly impossible to finish the run. It's not plantar fasciitis or achilles tendonitis (no swelling, for one thing), but I can't consult a real doctor because I'm living in Japan and have no insurance and a very limited command of the language.

I did purchase new and good shoes, but no dice. I've consulted numerous of my track-involved friends, who offered various bits of contradictory advice. One person advised about 20 minutes of stretching before and after a run. Another said to not stretch before running, and stretch each calf for 3 sets of 30 seconds each. Those are the two extremes, and most suggestions fall somewhere in the middle. I make a point of doing a couple minutes of stretching (basic calf and thigh stretches), but nothing extensive, and I'm not sure what alterations I should make to my routine. I also took some time off, and just walked for my exercise, but when I started running again the problem returned.

Please help, any assistance would be appreciated. I'm just starting to get into running and just starting to get into shape, and I'm afraid that if this affliction keeps on going I will lose the motivation I've managed to fire up.

Running Beginners :: Stomach Cramps During A Race?

i get them every race i've ever ran, some worse than others the past few races i've ran my stomach cramps really hindered my racing ability. It normally occurs within the first mile of a 5k and gets worse as the race goes on no matter what i do to my breathing pattern (it usually just switches to another spot on my stomach if i get rid of it). I cant breathe in fully so im definitely not getting enough oxygen. The location of the stomach cramp varies all over my stomach. Is it because i have weak stomach muscles. Plus, now i think i pulled a stomach muscle because with an enormous cramp i pushed my finishing kick to beat another kid in the race and now it's slightly sore.

Running Up A Hill :: 18 Years Old - Burning Sensation And Trouble Breathing

I am an 18 year old female who has had some heart problems in the past 5 years but they're on the mend. Last night i was running up a hill for what was a maximum of 30 seconds when suddenly i go this burning sensation right across my chest and into my throat i found it very difficult to breathe and was continuously coughing and had this coppery sticky taste in my throat. I started to panic thinking is was something to do with my heart and my legs went weak, i couldn't see properly and had a headache. I eventually got home and my symptoms didn't go for another hour and a half. I put my head in between my knees and gulped down freezing cold water as suggested by my asthmatic sister which helped dull some of the symptoms. Today i feel very weak and tired and haven't had much of an appetite which is very unusual for me . I'm unsure whether it is asthma or not because im not sure whether attacks usually last that long.
