Orthopedics :: Fractured Humerus (midshaft), Elbow And Radial Nerve Damage
I had a fall on june 17th 2014. Fell about 20 feet onto a concrete floor. I fractured the humerus, fairly simple fracture straight across the midshaft, no surgery. fracture to the elbow, and got radial nerve damage.
It is now week 14 and although the nerves are back and my wrist is fully functional, both fractures are yet to heal, the humerus fracture is fairly straight, and some callous is appearing, but there is still movement in the fracture site. And the elbow still shows a fracture.
I now have an electromagnetic device to help with the healing, 30 mins a day i can use it for.
Just wanted to know if anyones had success with one?
Also seeing as i broke the elbow the arm has been held in a sling this whole time, without straightening of the arm, so the inside of my elbow is getting very inflamed, but not painful yet, anything i can do to help it?
Stiff Elbow After A Humerus Fracture
My elbow become very stiff after a humerus fracture, especially after elbow immobilization for an extended period of time, I was trying to practice a Six Pack Active Hand Exercises but i can't execute an exercises number : (3) and (4) because i can't bend my fingers more than 90 ; and i can't make a fist .

On January 31, I fell on ice walking my dogs and fractured my surgical neck of my arm and have a very large spiral fracture down my humorous. Initially the pain was pretty bad, I struggled with sleeping, but after day seven it started feeling a little less painful. But then I met with orthopedic again and he put me in a plastic brace to help align the bone and now the pain is almost unbelievable. The only thing I am taking is Tylenol because any kind of opiate makes me very nauseous, and I have a history stomach ulcer so I cannot take Ibuprofen. This whole ordeal has been a huge struggle for me to go from a very active person to sitting in the recliner all day long. I am alone also most of the days because my husband has to go to work. It's been really hard for me not to become overwhelmingly depressed. I'm dealing with the guilt of not being able to go to work as I am a supervisor of a program. In addition I have four animals that are being neglected because I don't have the energy and stamina to do anything with them. Not being able to be self-sufficient is also extremely saddening to me. It is hard for me to see the future when when the orthopedic is saying it will be at least six weeks before I will start seeing some changes. I have tried to keep my mind occupied with things but all I want to do is get better. How has other folks dealt with the pain, the lack of independence and the feeling of being cooped up?
View 1 RepliesPhysiotherapy To Get A Good ROM After Humerus Fracture?
On January the 19th I broke my humerus - transverse fracture, slightly not aligned -(I'm 23). I had a surgery after a couple of days with percutaneous fixation with wires, then I was put in a sling for over a month. About two weeks ago I removed the wires in day surgery and was told to try and remove the sling and make some pendulum exercise with my arm.
At the moment I've recovered the elbow movement nearly at 100%, but I can't raise my arm nor move it anywhere. In a couple of days I'll have another X Ray, then an orthopedic examination.
I think and hope the doctor will tell me to start physiotherapy... I'd like to ask you how much time I will need to recover a good range of movement for ordinary life activities (like driving, wearing normally, running)
Humerus Fracture Heals Without A Permanent deformity?
Four months ago I fractured my humerus in a car accident and got taken to hospital where I had my arm put in a sling. After a month the bone had begun to heal, but very slowly. My doctor said he wasn't sure whether my arm would fully heal without a permanent deformity. I have displayed a picture of the x ray for the last 2 months x rays and any opinions on what I should do would be much appreciated. I am begining to lose faith in my doctors decision to leave it. I have told him that I want the bone replacing but he said it would be risky going through surgery but I have been put on a waiting list nonetheless.

On the 30th November I was crossing a road and was struck by a car.
I was knocked unconscious, but after getting taken to a&e and CT scans and xrays they found I had a proximal humerus fracture
The hospital I was admitted to were terrible at giving me information, but I was told I needed it fixed with an operation. Turns out the shoulder was dislocated and the humerus broken right by it.
Eventually they took me down to surgery on the 4th December (was in hospital the whole time)
The next day I was sent home, being told just to flex and move fingers and straighten my arm from the elbow.
2 weeks later I had a check up, doctor was happy but told me very little. I asked if I should be doing anything else, he said nothing.
After 4 weeks, when no NHS physiotherapy appointment had been scheduled, I went private and started doing pendulum exercises. A week later, I was told to assist my injured arm in moving while lying down and the arm being bent at the elbow.
Today I received a very last minute NHS physiotherapy appointment, I went and it appears if I lie down and move my injured arm (assisted or not) the shoulder moves fine, but if I'm standing it is as if the shoulder isn't moving inside, like the ball isn't moving and the shoulder physically moves up.
I haven't got another appointment with the hospital until the 16th
The NHS physiotherapist was worried about my range of motion and said it needs to be weekly appointments.
I'm 24 years old, not over or under weight, fairly good diet, smoke (have cut down) rarely drink
I normally ride a motorbike and drive a car and I really miss being able to!

Mid Shaft Humerus Fracture - Itching And Fluid Build Up Under Brace
I'm a 19 year old girl in good health and no previous broken bones or medical conditions. 8 days ago
I fractured my humerus, mid shaft. Its an oblique fracture. I had an appointment with a orthopedic surgeon and
The bone is perfectly aligned now and the feeling in my fingers and wrist is back. I still cannot move my lower arm.
I was fitted with a brace about 13 hours into the break, and I can no longer feel the bones clicking. The past couple days I
Have had an intense itching under the brace and tonight it got so bad I stuck a cotton swab under the mesh slip to itch it. When I looked at the swab it was a little bloody and had puss and what looked like peeling skin on it. When I looked on the back of my arm under the mesh slip I saw a red rash. It looks and feels very raw. Is this normal?
Also, my elbow and lower arm is extremely swollen. I know this is from the buildup of fluids. But on the underside of my elbow there is a huge bluish purplish reddish bruise. Is this normal?
Orthopedics :: Scaphoid Fracture - Can't Bend Wrist To 90 Degrees

View 1 RepliesRadial Nerve Palsy Following Fractured Humerus
I suffered radial nerve palsy following surgery for broken humerus 9 weeks ago. The break area has recovered well but im still completely numb around parts of my elbow, thumb and top of my hand. I have only a slight grip and my elbow bends only at a 90 degree angle-Ive heard some numbing never recovers so could this be part of the reason i cant grip or bend?I know it takes 6-12 months for full recovery but im finding the physio very hard and should i be pushing these areas so much? Both areas are as swollen as they were 9 weeks ago which is another concern. Has anyone been through anything similar?
View 1 RepliesArm/Wrist/hand :: Ulnar Shortening Experience - Anyone?
My surgeon is suggesting that I get the ulnar shortening surgery to relieve pressure the ulnar side of the wrist as I've torn several ligaments in the wrist. I had a wrist arthroscopy last month so he could see the extent of damage and so he can plan for future surgery if needed. The damage turned out far more extensive than the MRI/arthrogram showed. I have a partial tear of the scapholunate ligament, complete tear of the lunotriquetral ligament and I've worn through the TFCC. I have the typical ulnar sided pain, and pain around the lunate bone but lately, I'm experiencing more and more problems on the thumb side of the wrist.
Has the ulnar shortening surgery helped relieve or reduce symptoms for anyone who also tore ligaments?
Arm/Wrist/hand :: Ulnar Shortening - Thoughts?
I also have Ulnar Shortening Surgery scheduled for September 23rd and am having second thoughts about going through with it. It's my left arm and isn't THAT painful so I'm thinking that I should leave it alone. There are obviously complications with this surgery and I just don't know if it's worth it. I'd like to ask everyone if they had a chance to go back to before the surgery would they have gone through with it?

View 4 RepliesArm/Wrist/hand :: Ulnar Shortening - Feedback Anyone?
Honestly, how bad is this thing? I've watched video's of it, prior posts about it.
I've read up about as much as i think possible, would just like to get some live feedback on it. For the most part I've got full function of my hand/wrists, its just somewhat painful sometimes, and when washing my hands, the wrist can feel loose and unstable.
I've had to reschedule my appointment a few times because of work so it's been about two months since I've spoken to my doc(George White, Orlando), I think his plan was 4 weeks cast, 4 weeks sling, 4 weeks PT. is that about the norm?
I "broke" my wrist..i think? when i was around 10, all i remember is when i fell off the monkey bars my ulna/radius was pushed up against my wrist(never broke skin). I'm relatively thin, 5'9 150, and my ulna's have always been slightly pronounced, never thought much of it until in august at the gym. I picked up a heavier dumbbell than i should have and i think my ulna slipped from the set position it's been in all these years and it throbs constantly/causes pain working out now. Its quite a bit longer than it should be so we're getting this done.
Ulnar Sided Hand / Wrist Pain For Over 6 Months?
I've been having pain in my right wrist and hand for over 6 months now. It mostly feels like a dull ache/pain and often tenderness which is on the little finger side (ulnar side) of my hand which comes and goes. Recently (within the last month or 2) the pain has spread up to my little finger knuckle joint which also feels tender when the pain flares up, the ache sometimes extends into my forearm as well still on that one side. I've had routine hand x rays (AP, lateral, oblique) which was said to be normal and also an ultrasound of median nerve and flexor tendons which was normal (will upload x ray image on here). In the past I have fallen off the skateboard a few times, the worst fall caused me to have stabbing pains in my right wrist when it happened and for a few days it hurt to do anything with it, it never swelled, and it settled to a mild pain, I had problems for a few months after that, I couldn't do the pushup position without that wrist hurting a fair bit, and it still is sore when I try now but not as bad, that fall would've been over a year ago though.
When I went to a new Dr about it they did this test which pulled my arm back and stretched my ulnar nerve and I nearly jumped out of my skin, I had severe pain shoot down my arm and into my hand and fingers, so he has ordered me a nerve conduction test because he thinks it might be something to do with the ulnar nerve because of the area of pain and that positive ulnar stretch test. This confuses me because I don't have typical nerve pain or symptoms ( like tingling, numbness or electric shock like pain). My hand just feels achy, sore and tender. I feel like it is most tender when I press around the hamate bone area on the palm and also on the top of the hand where the base of the 4th and 5th metacarpal/hamate bone is, but nothing showed on the x ray so this confuses me. One thing I did notice though was a little black triangular shaped thing near the base and right side of my 5th metacarpal bone on the x ray, now i've only studied a tiny bit of radiography and I know nothing about the hand, but that doesn't look normal to me?
Arm/Wrist/hand :: Physio Process After Ulnar Shortening?
Hi I had ulnar shortening on my right arm on 11/9/13 and have been placed in a full arm cast until I have it taken off on 30/10/13, can anyone advise me on the physio process after the opp and what I'm likely to be able to achieve after periods of time, I'm currently off work as my job needs me to be able to use my arms/ hands at all times, I'm also right handed.
View 4 RepliesArm/Wrist/hand :: Ulnar Shortening Recovery And Outcome?
I have my ulnar shortening osteotomy (USO) booked in 5 days time with my pre-op assessment tomorrow.
I have founds tonnes of useful info but I'm now starting to realise everyone is different.
The main thing I'm finding is the difference in recovery and outcomes with different types and lengths of immobilisation.
So far Im being led to believe that those with some form of above elbow immobilisation in the initial stages have better outcomes compared to those with only below elbow who seem to have had more pain, less motion, and in some cases delayed or malunion of the ulna as well as more pain or issues with the plate or surgery site.
Arm/Wrist/hand :: Post Ulnar Shortening Pain
I am 4 months post op after having a standard USO. Doc removed 4 mm of bone and plated on the outside. The good news is the pain I had become so used to as a result of UIS has subsided but as I recover, i note new aches and pains which I don't like. Since the day after the op i have had quite agonising pain in my elbow. At no point did I have any above elbow immobilisation. All short arm casts for about 7 weeks in all. The pain has improved but still there and worsens when I straighten my arm - leaving me in a constant state of holding my elbow at 90.
Has anyone else had this after USO? If not - did you have above elbow casts/splints? If so, what was it like and did it subside???
The other problem I am having is when i try to pronate my arm (to get my palm facing down). It feels like as the ulna and radius cross with the twist, the screw(s) which protrude through the ulna, seems to be catching on the radius. it is very sore and most of the time stops me pronating.
If you have experienced anything like this please let me know whether it got better. i am already getting worried that the op has caused some kind of issue with my elbow and also that I will have to have plate removed. not part of the plan at all.
