Celica :: 1990 GTS Metal Grinding Noise Coming From Somewhere In The Belts
So I'm doing some work on my friends car he just bought, 1990 gts, rebuilt 5sfe, not sure how thoroughly it was rebuilt, there seems to be a metal grinding noise coming from somewhere in the belts, sounds almost like water pump, belt tensioner, ac clutch, or something along those lines. I don't know much about these motors, anything commonly go out on these?
View 2 RepliesToyota - Corolla :: 2008 - Grinding Occurs Intermittently When Shifting Up Into 3rd Gear
I bought 2008 Corolla S 5 speed with 62K miles. Now have 135K miles. When shifting up into 3rd gear, a grinding occurs intermittently, more often as miles accumulate. I try to make sure clutch pedal is fully depressed. No problems occur with other forward gears, up or down. What the problem might be and/or what can be done to fix? This is the sixth car I have owned with manual transmission. Never a problem like this!
View 5 RepliesToyota - Corolla :: 2005 - Making Grinding Noise While Shifting?
Our 05 Corolla, 160,000 miles, has started making a grinding sound when we upshift into 3rd, unless we let the rpms fall to below 1000. My husband said the clutch needed adjusting, but the dealer said this clutch is not adjustable. The dealer found nothing wrong and could not get the car to make the noise while in the shop. (It did actually get better for a while but got worse again almost immediately after the visit to the dealer.)
Our other car (a Saturn) has over 250K miles on the original clutch, so I don't think it's our driving. What could be wrong, and is this something that needs to be addressed soon lest we damage something irreparably? Also, this car has, since purchase, been nearly impossible to shift on the coldest mornings. Really, sometimes it is all I can do to get the lever in reverse to back out of the drive in winter (in Kansas). Warming up works, but it seems to take an inordinate amount of time before shifting is"normal."
Toyota - Celica :: 1990 Turns Over But Will Not Start
I just got a 1990 toyota celica and it turns over but dont start. its getting fuel up to the motor. i got it from a friend that gave up on it and he got it from a guy that replaced the 2200 with a 2000 engine. everything looks to be connected but i dont know where to start.
View 1 RepliesToyota - Celica :: 1990 - Won't Start After Driving?
I have a 1990 Toyota Celica, and I've been having trouble with it not starting after driving. There are no symptoms when the car is running, aside from a very slight rough idle. The car starts fine after sitting for 3-4 hours, but for short trips where it's off for under 1-2 hours, it cranks but will not start. The cranking also seems weak unless I floor the gas while trying to start, and sometimes it will eventually start if I hold the gas while cranking. It always starts at the beginning of the day.
This leads me to believe I'm dealing with a flooded engine, but I'm not sure how to diagnose why. I thought it might be leaky fuel injectors, but wouldn't that cause symptoms when running?
Toyota - Celica :: 1990 - Engine Started Smoking?
I have a 90 celica, and while I driving today, the engine started smoking. I pulled over and took a look. The smoke was coming from behind the smoke and air filter area. I let it sight for about 2 hours and drove it back home and it wasn't smoking. Both times, it was on the road for about 20 minutes. I got a buddy of mine to take a look and he said that it was caused from the coolant boiling(I didn't think coolant coils boil). And it rained for a week straight, and I haven't driven it since it started raining. Could that have anything to do with it?
View 6 RepliesToyota - Starting - Celica :: 1990 - No Restart After Driven For A While
I have a 1990 Toyota Celica that won't seem to start after I've driven it awhile. After sitting, it takes around 4 or 5 hours for it to start again (although this is highly variable). The first start of the day is always normal. Recently it will stall at idle, then have trouble starting up. The engine seems to "try harder" to start if I press the gas.
The weird thing is that I was able to start it up easily today by popping the clutch. This has been a problem I've been struggling with for a few months, and over that time I have replaced the starter, battery, fuel pump, spark plugs and wires, and EFI/Main Engine relays. It always cranks, just no start.
Celica :: 1990 GTS Violently Shudder Taking Off In First Gear
I have a 90 celica gts. when it drove, it would violently shudder taking off in first gear. the front motor mount was shot so i was hoping that was the problem. well right after i fixed it, the starter went so i had to compression start it, and the shuddering was still there, and i was about to shift to second when it revved up popped outta gear and didn't go anywhere. it wouldn't go into any gear.
I can go through all the gears without the clutch in. the guy i got the car from said the clutch was new. now i'm not sure if hes just lying or if the guy who put it in didn't know what he was doing. could this be a bad throughout bearing? or the trans? if its the trans i'm scrapping it, also the shiftier is REALLY loose. and before the clutch went it would make weird whirring noises in 1st.
Celica :: 1990 Toyota Locked Steering Wheel - Key Won't Turn
I have a 1990 toyota celica. The parking attendant somehow locked the steering wheel and the key will no longer turn in the lock. I tried everything i could think of: turning the wheel whilst turning the key, putting car in all positions other than park and then turning the wheel and key, changing the key, etc....The steering wheel remains locked and will not unlock.
View 11 RepliesToyota - Celica :: 1990 Dies While Driving / All Lights Blinked Twice Then Out
I have a 90 toyota celica st. I was driving it the other day and it died on me while driving... twice! The second time was going down a steep hill and it was freaken scary for a minute as the breaks were not working, the car started again and I was able to stop! Anyway I know enough about cars that once your car starts it should not die. Could it be the alternator? It seems to start up just fine. I did notice though that when the car died on me both times I was taking a pretty sharp right turn. And when it died every thing blinked twice then out went everything. Im sure that it is a code for something but I do not have the owners manual as I was not the original owner. I just started it up today again and it makes a weird clicking noise before I even turn the key.
View 4 RepliesCelica :: 1988 GT Manual Transmission Grinding When Going In 3rd Gear
My 88 celica's manual transmission grinds a little, at times, when going in 3rd gear. I have atf fluid in it now as specified in the manual. Should I replace it with gear oil?
I don't want to damage the transmission or clutch.
Celica :: 1983 - Shifter Sticks While Shifting Into 3rd Gear
i have an 83 gt celica and i am have trouble getting the gear shift to go into 3rd gear. I can do it if i shift slowly, but doing this fast risks shifting into 1st or getting jammed between 1st and 3rd.
i have attached a link to a diagram of the shifter parts and this contains more info on the car and engine type if needed. My question is what exactly do i need to replace to make it easier to shift?I have removed the boot and the gasket just to look inside and see if something looks bent, but I have not taken out the retainer or the plate below, but i am thinking that is the piece i need to replace.
Golf/GTI VI :: Slight Grinding When Shifting Into 4th Gear
Just recently, my car 6 speed has started acting up and it's got me worried. First, and most notably, when I go to shift into 4th gear, there is a slight grinding noise and its a little tough to shift into 4th. Once it is in 4th gear, though, it shifts and drives fine with no other grinding noise. A buddy of mine says it might be the synchros, but what that means or how I can fix it.
Also, it has been having a rough idle on startup for a while now. It will idle at around 1,200 RPMs for a bit when I start it up, and it will kind of backfire out the exhaust a bit, kind of like it's a misfiring coilpack or something, but will usually go away after I drive for a bit.
Driving my car right now isn't very fun when I am only worrying about what's wrong with it, so I really want to get it fixed sooner rather than later, before these develop into larger problems.
Nissan - Maxima :: 1990 - Grinding Noise While Turning
1990 Nissan Maxima, i noticed that after changing the struts/springs on my car that when i make a hard right turn while accelerating the car makes a terrible grinding noise. I know this is a classic sign for a CV joint, but could it be anything else? It is definitely not tire rubbing, definitely metal sound. It doesnt seem to be getting worse.
View 1 RepliesFord F-150 - 1997-2003 :: 1998 4.2L - Grinding When Down Shifting Into 3rd Gear
A few weeks ago I bot this truck to have some fun with. 98 F150 4.2l with a lift and some beefy tires. Well something to get me into trouble. On the test drive i never herd anything, mostly because I wasn't ripping it around. I know very little about transmissions, mostly because I never had a problem before.
I have a grinding noise when down shifting into 3rd for either 4 or 5th. It doesn't happen when I am going from 2-3. It also wont happen if i keep the clutch disengaged for a few seconds. It almost like the transmission need time to slow down for a second before shifting.
It also does this going into reverse.
Toyota - Celica :: 1992 GT Won't Go Into Gear Occasionally
I have a 92 Toyota Celica GT five speed that won't going to gear occasionally. I can drive several months at a time without having a problem and then all of a sudden when I start the car to put it in gear and I have to literally force it into gear or turn off the car and put it into gear. I can go 5,6,7 months at a time without having a problem. Then all of a sudden it won't work. I would say within the last year I have had the problem I'm maybe three times. The last being yesterday since about September. I have had the car for 10 years and have replaced the clutch maybe three years ago. I have been driven a manual shift car since I was 16. Last year around March I replaced the slave cylinder and the problem seem to go away. Do I really need another clutch?

My 1980 Toyota Celica (5 speed, R20) is backfiring a little when idling and also more if I am trying to slow down by using 3rd or 2nd gear - engine braking. So far I changed dist. cap & rotor, wires, spark plugs, muffler, all fluids... and it's still happening.
View 2 RepliesToyota - Celica :: 1998 GT Convertible Suddenly Lost Fifth Gear
I have a 98 Celica GT convertible that had suddenly lost fifth gear, and what I mean by loosing fifth gear is not that it pops out of fifth or that it will not go into fifth, the gear shift lever goes into the fifth gear position just fine and stays in that position, yet the car responds as if it is in neutral. This is what happened while driving home recently. The first time this happened was within a week or so of having my clutch replaced, so I took it back to the mechanic that replaced my clutch.
Upon investigation he found that the nut that holds fifth gear in was loose. He tightened this nut and it fixed the problem for awhile. This was now over two years ago, and to make a long story short, I eventually ended up having to replace that transmission with another used transmission from a salvage yard. The current transmission has been in the vehicle just over a year and a half with no problems until now. I am getting this same problem again, with no fifth gear.
Toyota - Celica :: Transmission Hangs Onto Third And Then Eventually Shifts Into Fourth Gear
I own a 2004 Toyota Celica GTS 4-speed automatic, 24,600 original miles. The car is maybe 11 / 12 years old now. I've noticed that in extremely cold Wisconsin weather it takes a while for my car to shift into fourth gear. It kind of hangs onto third and then eventually shifts into fourth at about 40 - 45 miles per hour. Not sure if that's anything to be alarmed about or not. Drives fine and shifts smooth in warmer weather. I am the second owner. I am going to assume the original owner never changed the transmission fluid, or for that matter, never had a reason to. I purchased the car several years ago. So... is slow shifting enough to change the fluid? Or age of the fluid anything to worry about?
