Ford Ranger / B-Series :: 1989 - Tranny Input Shaft Seal Replacement?
I'm replacing my clutch components in my 89 Ranger with an M5OD transmission. While I'm doing it I'm going to replace the input shaft seal on the transmission. I'm looking for the torque specs for the housing that holds the seal.
Also, should there be any play on the input shaft? My transmission has never made any noise but I noticed some slight play in the shaft.
Golf/GTI VI :: Spare Tire Spindle Rattles?
I have a non resonated exhaust and when I get on the gas, the spindle that holds down the spare tire in the hatch rattles like crazy. It is so loud. I have tried removing the spare tire and also removing the cap that holds down the spare tire. Nothing works.
View 5 RepliesFord F-150 - 1997-2003 :: 2wd Spindle Nut Socket Size?
Want to replace the rotors on my '97 2wd truck. What size socket do I need for the spindle nut? Can't seem to find that information with a search. I popped off the dust cap and test fitted a couple of sockets after removing the cotter pin and cap that locks the nut in place. 1" too small, 1-1/16" a little loose, so I'm thinking this nut is metric and I want a 26mm socket?
View 3 RepliesFord Ranger / B-Series :: 1996 XLT - Front Driver Side Spindle
I'm normally in the bullnose section, but recently started working on my father-in-law's 96 ford ranger. He wanted me to replace the front rotors.
I replaced the passenger side without a hitch, but when I went to replace the driver's side, I noticed the cotter pin and castle nut were missing. A nail was in the cotter pin's place. I backed off the spindle nut and found that the threads were eaten up, as was most of the spindle with various gouges and nicks.

Subaru - Justy :: 1989 - Rear Wheels Locked Up
Subaru released a TSB about the rear output bearing locking up if the gear oil in the transmission gets too low. This seems to have happened to me last week when I did a 70mph 360 on the freeway and went in the ditch.After dragging it on and off the tow truck twice, the rear wheels came loose. It was almost 3 quarts low on gear oil, so i filled it up and drove it home.There is a severe leak from the rear output seal, which is cracked. Looking at the pictures, it seems the driveshaft got hot and locked up inside the extension housing, and not the bearing (which is farther inside the housing.) My question is, can I sand the burr off the driveshaft, replace the seal, and call it good? Or, should I pull the transmission apart and replace the bearings?

Drove my car for the time in a week, i picked up a 89 gli 16v, and when I shut the car off and was getting my backpack out of my trunk i started to hear like a weird noise, kinda like a pump was pushing fluid or air from the rear of the car, it did it for about 20 - 30 seconds then stopped. No cel light and only a lil over 50k on the car.

Ford Transmission :: 1989 F150 - Rear Differential Rebuild?
I have a 1989 ford f150 xlt lariat it has a 5.0 and a 5 speed and is 4 wheel drive. Any way I am looking into rebuilding the rear end of the truck the pinion shaft has a lot of play in it up and down and both outer axle bearings seem to have lots of play in them. I believe it is a 8.8 inch in the rear. Just wondering if there hard to rebuild or what it all entails I have never taken one apart before and want to know what I am getting into. I have access to a press and a pinion and carrier bearing puller. the axle bearings i have done tons of them but never had to pull out the carrier. wondering how to set turning torque and backlash etc... and torque specs for everything.
View 8 RepliesFord - Brakes - Gasoline - F150 :: 1989 - Both Rear Brakes Stuck Occasionally
I recently bought a beater '89 F-150 (I-6, MT) with the following problems:
1) Both rear brakes seem to stick on occasion--almost like there was a "check valve" on the rear brake line. When that happens, there is a "BRAKE" and "Rear ABS" light (although the light does occasionally come on without brakes sticking noticeably).
What I noticed in Haynes is that the "RABS I" system functions in the following way: a) Upon noticing rear axle spinning slower than front axle, it actuates a valve, isolating the rear brakes b) If the problem persists, it then dumps the pressure back into the main system.
So, I wonder: Is this an ABS system acting up? If I were to (temporarily) de-power the ABS setup, would it default to "no ABS," or would I need to remove the hydraulic valves from the brake lines? (Don't really want to if I don't have to.)
2) You can select either fuel tank, get that tank's level to indicate on the fuel gauge...yet it only "draws" from the front tank.
Again, Haynes says there is a low pressure pump in each tank, feeding a high-pressure pump in essentially a small "header" tank. The "dual-function reservior" has a wholly mechanical selector, and notes that "Tank switching versus gauge conflicts can occur under certain failure mode conditions."
So: I can understand that the mechanical selector can, in effect, "stick" on one tank. But what I don't understand is how it can still draw from the front tank, with the "rear" tank selected (and presumably, that tank's low-pressure pump trying to feed the header tank.)
Is it possible that the low pressure pump--while beneficial to prevent gravitation at the main pump--isn't strictly necessary to fuel the engine? Or do I have a problem with a low pressure pump that's "always on," regardless of the selected tank?
Passat (B6) :: Rear Brake Pad Replacement
I just returned from the stealership for the 30K service on my 2006 Passat. The dealer says the back brakes will need replacement soon and there is a special tool for opening the caliper due to the electric parking brake. What tool do I need to do this myself? I have done brakes many times and normally it is a 30-45 minutes job for both axles. Also, with that few miles, will I need new rotors?

So I need to put some new brakes on the rear of the B6 but as I remember hearing there is a hydraulic that holds the brakes in place. Apparently they have to be disabled via VAGCOM. Is there any way around this?
View 12 RepliesGolf/GTI VII :: 2012 - Rear Brake Replacement At 30K
So my wife has 12 GTI with just under 30K on it. We purchased it brand new beginning of 2013. She was just in for oil change at the dealer in January. The told her she had 75% of the rear brake pads remaining. Today she heard a grinding noise and took to the dealer. They told her she has 25% remaining on the rear pads the rear rotors are completely rusted and need to be replaced. This just doesn't make sense to me.
They told her it is because of the way she drives. So in the last 4 months her driving habits suddenly changed? The front pads are completely fine. I just don't get how the rear pads and rotors needs to be replaced at 30,000 miles. Dealer tried to get it covered but VW said no. They told us to call customer service. This is ridiculous. I am certainly going to file a case with VW tomorrow. BTW they also told her the 2 front tires need to be replaced.

Camry :: 2007 - Rear Sway Bar Bushings Replacement?
As a lot of Camry in this world, my rear sway bar bushings went bad. Tried to replace them, I went slowly with the ratchet on the first bolt as I don't want to go with the impact tool, but that damn bolt decided to break anyway...
I called my local dealer and he said he don't have the replacement in stock and he cannot tell me the size of this bolt.
What is the size? My 07 SE have the bracket with only two bolts.

This is my first time working on drum breaks, all the repair manuals and videos don't make it look too bad. I did have a question about the parts required to replace the rear breaks.
Assuming these breaks are very worn. What parts would need to be replaced in a typical break job.
The pics below are what I'm planning on buying:

Rotors

Is there anything that I'm missing?
