Prius (Gen 2) :: 2005 - Cracked Rear Coil Spring After Oil Change
So, I got my oil changed at the dealer and they said that I have a cracked rear coil spring. They quoted $350. So I took it to my real mechanic and he looked at it, said it's fine for now but I do have inspection next month. He said my struts feel fine. I'm having trouble finding just the spring since the Moog ones are out of stock. I did see Unity quick struts but I don't know if they're any good whatsoever. Whether to just go with springs (and a link to some) or get the complete struts and lend an opinion on good ones. Also, it has 122k miles. A0001 ?
View 9 RepliesCamry :: 1MZ-FE Oil Leakage Around Filter Seal?
I have had a 2002 Camry with the 3.0 V6 (1MZ-FE) for a few months, and just changed the oil for the first time. I'm no stranger to oil changes, having done them myself for many years on a variety of cars. Never had a problem with it before. But no matter what I do I cannot get the filter on the Camry to seat right and seal. It leaks from the driver's side of the filter and drips straight down onto the exhaust (and smells just lovely). The leak is such that before I realized what was happening, the car was leaving a quart a week on the ground.
I've tried a couple different filters, thinking I maybe had some defective ones with a bad seal. But I get exactly the same results with both OEM Denso filters (the blue ones) and factory ones from a Toyota dealer.
I am quite sure that I did not leave the old filter gasket on the engine before putting the new filter on. The only thing I can think of is that maybe I am consistently overtightening the filter. I've never had a car that was fussy about that before, so I'm usually pretty casual about it---just follow the rule of "turn it by hand until you feel the gasket hit the block, then give it a turn with the wrench." But the filter on this car is so hard to reach from below that I was pretty much doing it by feel. (I only just discovered that you can do it from above if you remove the upper shield from around the exhaust manifold---that was how I got a clear enough view of that side of the block to be sure where the oil was coming out.)
Corolla / Matrix 2009-13 :: Rear Windshield Seal Cracked And Melting
I just washed my corolla today and I noticed a long black sticky piece of sealant laying on my windshield. So I looked around the edges of my rear windshield and to my surprised there were couple of cracks on the sealant. Not just cracked seal but also an inch to 3 inches of sealant are gone.
View 14 RepliesPrius (2004-09) Fuel :: MPG Change After Battery Replaced
I have a 2005 Prius recently replaced the hybrid battery. Not so happy with it, my mpg b4 was 49-51 mpg, now I only get 40-45 mpg. I notice the car is a little weaker and the ICE rev higher everytime I accelerate.
View 5 RepliesPrius (2010-12) :: Removing Cracked Splash Shield?
I seem to have cracked the black plastic part located directly under the front bumper. When I was parking it caught rebar and pulled it and it cracked. The pressure clip popped out but I was able to pin it back in. Is this called correct a splash shield? Again it's that black piece of plastic immediately under the regular bumper.
It has caught before in the past and I am considering just removing it completely. If it is indeed the piece it looks like online the part is around 35-40.
I'm halfway tempted to just leave it. If the car were new its a different story but if it works just taking it out without any issues then that's certainly an option too.
Prius (2004-09) :: Water Pump Replaced Due To Failure / Change Coolant For Hybrid System?
Actually 2 very similar questions about my Prius 2007.
1. My water pump was replaced by a dealer due to failure some half a year ago at 95,000 miles. Yesterday, after oil change (98,000), I was told it is recommended to replace engine coolant. Does this sound right? Don't they change coolant when replacing the pump?!
2. Identical question about HV pump. It was replaced at 80,000. Now they recommend do change the coolant for hybrid system. Don't they have to do it when replacing the pump?
I want to do everything necessary to maintain the car. But don't want to spend money for something that is not needed.
Prius (2010-12) :: Driver Side Window Is Broken / Cracked On The Edge
I have a 2014 Prius and I just noticed that the window on the driver's side is broken/cracked on the edge. I noticed this last night but my wife drives it mostly so I'm not sure how long it's been like that because my wife never noticed it.
View 3 RepliesPrius (2010-12) :: Oil Leak From Timing Cover Seal
Had our dealer service (non oil change interval) today at 46k miles. Was informed that there is an oil leak from the timing cover seal.
I was told it's not a minor job to remove the timing cover and reseal due to the many labor hours involved. 2 days of work required.
Infiniti - G35 :: Rear Main Seal Leaking After Engine Replaced
Last year, I had the unfortunate experience of having to get my engine replaced on a 2003 Infiniti G35 (only 121k miles, I got it used in '06, long story, I assume previous owner didn't take very good care of it). I opted to have a local mechanic find a used engine instead of paying for a rebuilt one and he was able to find one that had ~60k miles on it so I went with it. Now it's 9 months later and I have started noticing a burning oil smell while sitting in the car at a stop. I took it into a shop (not the one that replaced the engine, different tire and lube shop) and they found that the rear main seal was leaking pretty badly and that's where the smell was coming from. They don't do that kind of work so I need to take it somewhere else to get any repair done.
I feel like, if a second diagnosis also says RMS is the problem, that the shop that put in the engine should have given me a new RMS when they put in the used engine. Is it not something that would be visible and thus easily replaced when installing the new engine? If they did in fact replace it, it wouldn't possibly have failed on its own after only 8 or 9k miles, would it? I don't normally hearing about RMS problems until cars are well over 100k miles.
Celica :: 1995 - Passenger Differential Axle Seal Leaking (Replaced Twice)
Passenger differential axle seal is leaking again. It was replaced twice already. My mechanic checked the seal...its not damaged. Its not a excessive leak. Both times, the seal were replaced with OEM. I don't want to buy another one and replace it.
Its a 1995 Celica, 5SFE, 5-speed MT. 98k miles.
Freelander :: 2002 - Cam Seal Leak After A Possible Faulty Oil Change?
2002 Freelander with 95,000 miles . My friend brought her car in to have a new thermostat put in. The mechanic told her she needed an oil change. She, agreed and had them go ahead and change the oil. after leaving the mechanic her oil light came on. The Freelander started bucking so she pulled over and called the mechanic. After looking at the vehicle the mechanic told her that her CAM Seal was leaking and she had to have it and her belts replaced. Is there a possibility that the oil was overfilled or the plug was not put in properly and the oil leaked out causing the car to over heat and busting the seal on the cam?
View 5 RepliesPrius (2010-12) :: No Heat - Coolant Replaced?
My 2010 with 130,000 miles has no heat. I had it flushed at the dealer and recall work done last June as part of the maintenance sched and did not try to use the heat until a few weeks ago. I have taken it to the dealer twice. They have in order bled the coolant system, replaced the coolant and then changed the thermostat at the second visit. The catch is that each time they have done this the heat returns and by the next day or so the heat is gone--It has not been very cold yet so we have not needed to use the heat every day. I am wondering if the system is hard to bleed?
View 19 RepliesPrius (2010-12) :: Headlights Not Working After Inverter Replaced
After the car shut down and had to be towed to the dealer, the inverter was replaced (fortunately we were just under the 80k mile hybrid warranty). The problem now is that the headlights and parking lights are not working. We took the car back to the dealer who said it was no doubt burnt out headlight bulbs. I told them that the parking lights were also not working and they insisted it is the headlight bulbs.

As our Pri age, sooner or later the 12 v battery will fail and at exactly the wrong time. So perhaps preventive maintenance means replacing it just before failure. What has been the experience of other owners of 2010's as far as failure goes?
View 19 RepliesPrius (2010-12) :: Car Pulled To The Left Quite Badly After Tires Replaced
I got two new Bridgestone ER300 Ecopia to replace two on the front. Trouble is after getting the tires fitted the car pulled to the left quite badly and my mpg's went down! Hmmm. I checked the tires in case a non low rolling resistance tire had been fitted by mistake, but they were correct. I then checked the pressures, which again were correct. So I guessed the tracking must have been out so booked it in with the dealers for checking. After a couple hours and a couple test drives later they advised the tracking is fine and the tires are fine. Odd.
Just filled up for the second time since the new tires and I'm struggling to get anywhere near 50 mpg! Even after a few long trips where I know from past experience that I could get mid 60's easily. I've inspected the tires closely and note that one of the new ones is made in Italy and the rest are from France. All the loadings, ratings and the type are the same, just made in a different factory and it is a slightly lighter colour compared to the French ones.
Prius (2010-12) :: ABS And VSC Lights On After Tire Pressure Sensor Replaced?
I took my Prius to get one of the air pressure sensors replaced on a front tire. When they returned it to me they told me that the ABS and the VSC lights were on and did I know that. I told them that was not on before. Anyway they told me they could not fix it an I needed to take it to the dealer to get it re-calibrated which i did.. How can I prove that this happened when the tire was being worked on, or can I?

View 12 RepliesPrius (2010-12) :: Warning Lights Came On After Oil Change
Strange thing happened yesterday. After changing my oil as I left my friends house I had a couple weird indicator lights. ABS warning, the yellow indicator next to that ((!)) and the traction control light were all lit and solid. Brakes felt a little unusual. Less sensitive than normal but working fine....
I pulled out of his driveway, then went about 20 feet and pulled over. Shut the car completely off, turned it back on and all was normal.
The exclamation indicator was not lit nor Check engine and no messages were displayed. No beeping . It's almost like I had the car in some kind of brake test mode or something.
Here's what I did before I left his house:
While on jack stands I changed my oil. While it was still up on jacks I turned on the car to run the engine for a moment. (I put it in neutral to let it run for about 1 minute.) No leaks .. buttoned up the car, put it back on the ground. Filled oil to the top line and ran the engine again for maybe 30 seconds. Everything normal. Then I had it in "ON" mode while I checked my tire air pressure. (I had a warning indicator about that.) Once I had tires correct I put the car in ready mode. All indicators off and normal. Shut off car then had it in accessory for a little while. (Listening to radio) It was after this I left his house..... So I definitely cycled the car on and off several times.
Prius (2010-12) :: Driving In B Cause For Early Oil Change?
I'm a very new Prius 2010 owner (as of December 2010) and I very stupidly drove my car in B for about 70 miles down the interstate. I wasn't paying attention, and had only had the car for a week, and I shifted into B instead of Drive and didn't realize it until about 70 miles down the interstate. I had been driving up to 75 mph during that time.
My dealer has the oil change sticker listed as needing changed at the next 5K miles, but my oil service display is already showing service needed, some 3K miles before their estimated 5K mark. Is this related to the horrible B driving that I did in December? I would love to just reset the oil change display and keep driving, but I did some sort of damage or extreme wear and tear with the B driving.
