Prius (2004-09) :: 2005 - Shifting Out Of Gear In Cold Weather?
My 2005 Prius shifts into Neutral, "N", when I put it either into Drive, "D", or Reverse, "R", during Cold weather, mid 20's and below. It will only stay in "B" to drive, and I have to hold the shifter in "R" to back up or "D" to drive. After the car warms up while driving 15-20 minutes in "B", I can shift it into "D" and it will stay there. I normally start the car and let it warm up in the morning for 10-15 minutes on cold days, below 25F but still I'm only able to drive it in "B" until it's ready. I just moved to Montana after driving this car in normal Southern California driving conditions. It happened while vacationing in Montana during the winter of 2007 a few times but it didn't bother me since I wasn't living there. I reported to Toyota but they couldn't do anything since the weather wouldn't co-operate. This car is still under 70,000 miles.

Last night our prius started making a mechanical sound when we shift into forward or reverse.
View 7 RepliesPrius (2004-09) :: 2005 - Grinding Noise While Shifting / Using Brake?
New to me 2005 with 99k miles
I've noticed this strange grinding/clunking/engaging noise. It seems like it sometimes associated with using the brake and shifting gears upon start-up.
Prius (Gen 2) :: High RPM Before Shifting
I have a Gen II 2008 with 109000k miles. It seems when it gets hot here in Arizona (near 100 or >) that for a period of time driving home, the car will not shift into the next gear properly. I have to back down on the accelerator to get it to shift to a higher gear or whatever the trans axle is not doing. There are no check engine lights or codes be thrown. Is there a sensor that could be causing this behavior or are there internal clutches slipping. Oddly later driving home things seemed back to normal.
View 6 RepliesPhaeton :: 2004 V8 Not Shifting To Next Gear
While driving, the phaeton acts as if it doesn't want to shift to next gear...it hesitates 2 or 3 time as if it wants to stall then goes.
I've replaced the pcv valve and got the maf checked(good). What could be going on?
Touareg :: 2004 - Hesitation In The Shifting
I have a 04 V8 with a hesitation in the shifting. The VIN is in the 44000's. The dealer says there is nothing they can do to flash the tranny, they've tried and it won't let them. I found the TSB referring to the engine code and they insist it doesn't apply to my vehicle. Is there anyway to find out for myself whether or not it is possible?

Just wondering, is there a recommended procedure or speed range to shift in or out of EV mode while operating, or should it be done while the car is stopped?
View 2 RepliesPrius (Gen 3) :: Shifting In Neutral Without Turning On?
For decades, in preparation for washing our cars, I've been shifting them into neutral without starting up, and rolling them out of the garage. Typically there's a mechanical "keep it in park" lock that needs to be bypassed. Then, once you've released the parking brake, you can open the driver's door and get your car moving in "foot mode".
View 19 RepliesLexus GX 2004-09 :: Binding Of Gears When Shifting Into L Or H
Is it normal to feel resistance and binding of gears when shifting into L or H, when regular shifter is in neutral? One Lexus dealer technician said no, a different Lexus dealer said yes, and a 20-year private transmission shop technician said yes; the "yes" technicians said its because the gears are not synchronized and will grind and bind a little when shifting into L or H on the 4 wheel drive shifter. Car is a 2007 GX 470 and runs great.
View 14 RepliesLexus GX 2004-09 :: Grind When Shifting In 4WD Mode
So this is my first 4wd vehicle. I read that to put vehicle in 4wd when the car is running, put the car in neutral and shift the 4wd stick to H or L depending on the driving condition. When I do that, it grinds a little before slipping into the mode. Is this normal? Am I shifting it into 4wd incorrectly? Also, when doing normal road driving on pavement (no rain or snow), should the car be kept in H or N on the 4wd stick?
View 10 RepliesJaguar X :: 2004 - Delay In Shifting As The Car Accelerates
I purchased an 04 X-Type with 53k about a year ago. Nice car, great ride and style. There is one thing, though, that annoys me. It seems to shift late or shift awkwardly as the car accelerates. When I depress the accelerator at moderate speed (20- 35 mph or so), the car shifts but seems to delay (late shift). It's not a kick- just an awkward shift. Is this a characteristic of this model? No other issues. Solid car.
View 2 RepliesTouareg :: 2004 V8 - Clunking When Shifting, Going On And Off Throttle
My 2004 V8 clunks when shifting gears, causing the engine to oscillate right through the seat. It also happens when driving a steady speed, e.g., 10MPH in traffic, and you goose the gas or release the gas altogether. So far:
1. Replaced transmission valve body
2. Replaced stepper motor
3. Replaced rear propellor shaft and bearing
I think this started with a reflash of the trans to cure the death lag.
Ford - Aviator :: 2004 AWD - Shudder Shifting Into OD
We have a 2004 Aviator AWD. 73k miles. Trans has been shuddering on the upshift to OD intermittantly. No codes no other symptoms.
I dropped the pan, replaced the filter and 5-6 quarts of fluid with Mercron V fluid. No metal in pan, fluid was not burned, filter only had a small amount of dirt. Very small amount (fine dust)of metal on the magnet. Drove it about 50 miles and noticed the shudder again this morning. I planned on replacing the fluid in the pan again after some miles and time so as to get most of the 12 or so quarts replaced.
I have no codes or CEL. No flashing OD light either...
Prius (Gen 2) :: Clunk Or Thump Noise When Shifting From D And R?
I've just bought a 2005 Prius, 142k miles. It's a great car, and frankly with any 'new' car I buy I always worry about new sounds. This time it's 'clunk' or 'thump' noise when shifting from D to R and vice versa. It doesn't happen all the time, but it's a noticeable noise that can be felt as well.

View 8 RepliesPrius C :: Shifting To Neutral At Red Lights Bad For Transmission?
I shift to neutral when approaching a red light when my speed is exactly at 7 mph to save on battery power that would otherwise continue to propel the car forward. Combined with proper timing, this also allows my car to come to a complete stop without the use of brakes on flat roads. Once stopped, I immediately shift back to drive to allow the battery to charge if needed and of course in preparation for the green light.
A few sites, such as Putting your car in neutral at read lights. Good or bad? (red light, manual transmission) - Automotive -Sports cars, sedans, coupes, SUVs, trucks, motorcycles, tickets, dealers, repairs, gasoline, drivers... - City-Data Forum mention that shifting from drive to neutral at red lights, then back to drive again when the lights turn green puts wear on automatic transmissions.
Given that the Prius C has CVT, will it also wear, due to such frequent D -> N -> D shifting under the circumstances described?
Lexus GX 2004-09 :: How To Get The Doors To Unlock When Shifting Into Park
I have a 2004 GX470, fully loaded. When I shift into drive from park, all my doors automatically lock. However, when I park and shift back into park, the doors do not unlock...I have to manually press the unlock button. Is this how it is supposed to be? I have ridden in later Lexus's where the doors unlock when you shift to park. Or is there a switch or method to get the doors to unlock when shifting into park?
View 7 RepliesCamry :: 2004 Clunks Very Hard When Shifting Into Reverse
I have a 2004 Camry 4cyl with and Automatic Transmission. 193,xxx miles. I bought the car with 165,xxx miles. From time to time the transmission would take a little longer than normal to shift from 1-2 or 2-3. It has also had an issue with locking up the torque converter at speeds around 50 MPH which seems to bog the engine some. An adjustment of the foot on the gas pedal fixed both of these problems. (I just let up a little or pressed a little harder)
Well on friday it did something weird. It now clunks very hard when shifting into reverse. Also when in drive it seems to be in 3rd gear. The engine revs very high before the car starts moving but then it seems to run fine once moving and up to road speed.
I have heard that the Transmission may be controlled by its own Computer unit. Is that true? How do I get codes from it?
I have run my scan tool through the OBDII port and get no codes at all.
Subaru - Forester :: 2004 - Hard Shifting Into Gears
My 2004 Forester (73000 miles) with 5-speed manual, is sometimes hard shifting into gears. The Subaru agency says that there's 'not much left' on the clutch and I need a new clutch @ $1300. Does hard shifting , no clutch slipping, indicate new clutch is necessary?
