Prius (2004-09) :: Humming Noise Starting At About 45 Mph - Brake Pedal Clink / Pop Noise
Two things I have just noticed on my '09 with aprox. 120,000 miles.
Starting at about 45 mph, I am getting a humming noise
Doesn't get louder as speed goes up either, stays the same 45-75 mph
Have Bridgestone Ecopia EP422 tires, did rotation, noise did not change location
Noise does go away gradually when slowing down to a stop (after I have reached 45)
I am deaf on my left side, this is hard to tell where it is coming from
Second is this really odd brake pedal clink / pop noise. When brake pedal is depressed fully to the floor, car ON or OFF, there is a clunk
See attached links to the noise.....
Brake pads / rotors are like new, plenty of life on them. I did have the inverter pump replaced per the recall (I read somewhere this could be related?)

Prius (2004-09) :: Engine Noise Only At 0 - 40 Mph
Dealership says engine knocking means I need a new engine. I have put 3000 miles since last dealership visit. No change in engine. Could this be a catalytic converter or other problem? Do not hear the noise at 70 mph only at 0-40 mph.
View 2 RepliesPrius (2004-09) :: Delayed Tap Noise When Hit The Brakes
I believe this is where the noise is coming from. I get a delayed tap noise when I hit the brakes. If I lift my foot off the brake and hit it again I might not get the noise. It seems forward momentum is need to "reset" whatever is making the noise.
Also.... Right turns at 25 mphs I can hear a rhythmic woob woob woob.
Accept for the tap noise the woob woob woob is hard to hear unless I have a passenger, more so if the passenger is in the rear.
I can't run this Prius into a dealer like I can in the states. I've had this Prius in the Republic of Panama since 2007. They just started selling IV models. This is possibly the 1st Prius in Panama
I had the pads replaced about 25,000 miles ago. There's 106,000 miles on the car.
I step on the rear bumper and bounce the car. The suspension sees stiff/normal. I don't hear any that might be loose.
Prius (2004-09) :: Humming Noise Under The Hood
I loved my 2009 Prius until this weekend. I just turned over 31,000 miles and now a loud humming noise has developed under the hood while driving. It has not been cold here and this doesn't start until I reach around 24 mph. It remains while the gas engine is running or I'm coasting with the engine off. The humming is there in D or in N and there no sound while turning. When I am under 24 mph the noise is gone. I have set up an appointment with my Toyota dealer for this week, but wanted to know ahead of time if any other Prius owners have had this issue.
View 5 RepliesPrius (2004-09) :: Strange Engine Noise
I bought a 2007 Prius with 198,000 miles on it. Since then I've got it up to 200,000 ish. The previous owners took very good care of it, and did not encountered any severe issues.
I recently took it in to a toyota dealership for the free inspection, and they said it was in remarkably good shape. I asked about the engine noise, and they took it for a drive and said everything sounded pretty normal, at least compared to the prius with 130,000 miles on it that they had apparently just serviced before me. I went ahead and lifted up the hood, set my phone recording at the front of the car, and started it. I let it run for a few seconds, then shut it off.
Prius (2004-09) :: Noise In Engine While Accelerating
So after doing some troubleshooting and researching in trying to find out on my 87K 2008 Prius Std "Noise in the engine while accelerating", "Approximately 10% reduction in fuel efficiency, due to lack of power from engine" & "Glide seems to be degrading over time", here is what I have observed.
1) When I push the gas when the car is parked the engine does not seem to rev in a stream, it goes up for about 3 seconds then goes down for 1 second, then again goes up and then down and this keeps happening until the gas pedal is kept press. In conventional cars the rev should be streaming continuously and proportionately to the pressure applied on gas pedal. This almost seems like a misfire, but from the drivers seat I do not hear any blasts, I have never tried this before so I don't know if Prius's are suppose to be like this. Also no Alarms on the MFD.
2) After using the 5.25 oz fuel injector cleaner in back to back half tanks I saw the engine regaining power and hence bettering the fuel efficiency. Does that mean I should get a Fuel Injector cleaning done by Toyota?
Prius (2004-09) :: Squeak Noise From Behind Dash
2004 Prius base
191K miles
There is a squeaking (for lack of a better term) noise from behind the dash..
Prius (2004-09) :: Exhaust Noise Has Been Getting Louder
So recently (since Thursday morning last week) I noticed the exhaust noise of my prius has been louder. Today I experimented a bit and I'm pretty sure it's exhaust related. The car is pretty loud if there is any load on the engine, although still mostly quiet if it's idling. There are no errors presenting and mileage is still great.
Otherwise, it's loud and resonates at a few different rpm points, and I found that when the engine spins under breaking (foot-off coasting over 42mph or in B mode) it also makes noticeable exhaust noise of the same type.
I'm guessing the exhaust is leaking (the sound seems to be coming almost from the left rear seat area? Behind me when I'm driving at least).
Prius (2004-09) :: Groaning Noise When Going Around Corners
120K (64 by me & 56 by prior owner during first 6 1/2 yrs) I was having a groaning noise when going around corners especially when headed down hill and hitting the brakes at the same time. I also had a rattle or popping going over bumps. I couldn't isolate the noise and nothing felt loose in the front end when I jacked it up. The dealer said the lower control arm bushings and ball joints needed to be replaced for $1545. I asked about front struts and was told that the control arm bushing and ball joints had to be replaced first before the struts could be examined.
I replaced the control arm assemblies (had to lower front cross member while supporting engine w/large jack and removing lower engine dog bone), ball joints, stabilizer bars and stabilizer bushings myself. Ball joints required removing axles and steering knuckle assembly to remove metal CV dust shield on back side of steering knuckle. (will post procedure later). Had lined up and the noise changed (groaning on corners left and rattle became pronounced on all bumps like the front end was about to fall out). By the way no cracks or excessive wear on any of the rubber components as I have always seen on the Subaru and other cars I had.
Prius (2004-09) :: Cracking Noise When Turning
However, our other 04 that we still have is starting to make a not so nice cracking (only way I can describe it) noise when turning the wheel while dipping into a dip. Or even while turning into our driveway before we go up it. Somewhere I heard the steering rack, which can cost over $2,000 (supposedly)
View 3 RepliesPrius (2004-09) :: Front End Bumping Noise
2008 Touring model. When I encounter relatively small bumps, like, sealant over cracks on asphalt pavement, expansion joints, etc. there is a bumping noise from the front, seemingly the left, which I can feel through the steering wheel. The car handles and rides fine thus I am suspicious that it is a shock/strut issue, but I take note replacement is recommended at 60K miles. Mine has almost 120K.
View 3 RepliesPrius (2004-09) :: AC Compressor Noise When Braking
Quick back story, bought the car a year ago, seller told me it was in an accident and the radiator was replaced. He let me know that the discharge AC hose was missing and that the other hose was disconnected. I also noticed that the low pressure cap is missing. I recently ordered and installed the discharge hose with the intention of filling the system later.
I have always noticed a noise/vibration coming from the passenger side when braking at low speeds. I havent noticed at higher speeds but maybe there is more road noise. The best I can describe the noise is that is sounds like a compressor running. I have a hunch it's the AC compressor and might be related to the regenerative braking, but I am no expert.
Prius (2004-09) :: Grinding Noise In Front End?
My Prius has developed a disturbing noise over the past 2 weeks. I believe the noise is coming from the front, driver's side. The faster I go, the louder the noise. It begins shortly after accelerating and doesn't stop until I stop the car.
I didn't think it was a mechanical noise, but now I'm not sure. I feel a slight vibration in the accelerator pedal while the car is making the noise. I'm wondering if this is something in the axle, wheel bearing, transmission, or what.
Prius (2004-09) :: Red Triangle And Grinding Noise
Basically I have two problems which will be looked at by Toyota on Friday. But I need to arm myself with ammunition in case I have a debate with the service/repair guy.
Firstly my gen 2 decided not to start for about 10 minutes and gave me the red triangle with an exclamation mark before everything went back to normal again. The car starts every time now but the triangle appears briefly at the start which I don't think was there before. Could this be the 12V battery?
Another thing is grinding noise on full lock to both left and right. What could this be?
Prius (2004-09) :: Clicking Noise From The Rear
I have a 2007 with 87000 miles on it. Over the past two months, it's developed a clicking noise from the rear of the car. At first I thought it was a loose hatch, but it seems to be shutting snugly. It only happens on slight bumps and not on actual potholes. It sounds exactly like the sway bar links on my old volvo would sound when they were going (which was often), but there are no sway bars on the prius. A suspension noise doesn't surprise me after the winter. The other odd thing is that it occasionally disappears completely for a day or two.
View 1 RepliesPrius (2004-09) :: Noise Comes From The Front Of Car Whenever Drive Over 30 Mph
I have a 2008 Toyota Prius with 23k mileage. Whenever I drive over 30mph, I get a noise that comes from the front of the car. The noise gets louder as I drive faster. I just got the tires replaced, and that did not resolve the issue. I want to know what the problem is? Is it normal for Prius's to make this noise?
I just went to my mechanic and he told me that its the front wheel bearings. Can that possibly be the problem with my car.
Prius (2004-09) :: 2005 - Noise After Shutting Down
My Prius makes a noise (maybe a pump noise?) after shutting down car. I shut down and it makes the noise as I'm getting out - it lasts maybe 5-10 seconds. It sounds like a pump is running and a bearing is going bad. Attached, zipped video is about 1.5MB, 10sec long.
View 8 RepliesPrius (2004-09) :: Whining Noise From Motor?
Just picked up a 05 with 99500 on it. Drives fantastic and previous to this I used to have an 05 way back that I drove new to 64k. Anyway I test drove it in the rain and with chatter between my wife and I with the sales rep I didn't notice it but now I found that there is a whining noise coming from the timing chain area of the motor. Its only when the car is on and it gets louder as you go towards the passenger side and away from the hybrid components. Here is the sound from my iphone near the motor.
View 3 RepliesPrius (Gen 2) :: 2004 Ticking Noise Every Minute When Car Is Idling
2004 Prius with 109,000 miles. It's been in an accident before (and you can tell, the front right fender is a bit misaligned and the doors have a paint covering abrasions).
However, the car is making a ticking noise every minutes or so. The sound is originating in the Hybrid Synergy Drive converter inverter box and about every minute for about 5 or 7 seconds or so there will be a ticking or clicking noise. This happens when the car is idling, driving, and even a minute or two after car was shut off. The mechanic next door to the dealer didn't know what it is and the dealer is giving me a 30 day. What could this clicking be?
