Prius (2004-09) :: 2005 - Rear Brakes Grabbing
About a year ago, the rear brakes became very suspectable to moisture and started grabbing. After a few stops the grabbing would subside, but I could still feel the rear brakes engaging a little earlier or more than the front brakes (the rear-end of the car would hunker down a little). So I replaced the rear shoes, the old ones had about 90K on them, not worn real bad and had plenty of life left. I made sure that when I installed them to clean everything, put a skim of silicone brake grease on a couple of the friction points and set the adjusters down so they would be able to auto adjust to the right setting.
The grabbing didn't stop, so I've lived with it for a while and finally got around to replacing the front brakes on the assumption that maybe since they were old that they may not be stopping the car as much as the new rear brakes were. Didn't work, in the back of my mind I'm wondering if there is possibly something wrong with the master cylinder and the balance between front and rear brakes is off. I'm going to go clean the rear brakes again today and crank the adjusters back to see if they adjust to a better position this time around. The drum and disc surfaces are in good shape and color.
Can the master cylinder get its balance messed up?
Prius (Gen 2) :: Rear Brakes Grabbing Hard
Two weeks ago I took my 2004 Prius (with about 165,000 miles on it) to the dealership because of problems with the rear (drum) brakes grabbing (sometimes hard enough to lockup one of the wheels). Their diagnosis was that they were badly out of adjustment. They "cleaned, adjusted and beveled rear brakes" which fixed the problem, but it returned this morning. I should also mention this dealership had "cleaned and adjusted" the rear brakes twice before over the last couple of years.
View 1 RepliesToyota - Prius :: 2007 - Brakes Grabbing Badly During First Couple Of Stops
I have an 2007 Toyota Prius and in the mornings, especially if it is humid or moist outside, my brakes grab badly during the first couple of stops....it's bad enough to make somebody run into the back of me. When it happens, you will also hear a screeching noise coming from the (sounds like ) rear brake, passenger side. I have taken the car to the local garage twice and they found nothing wrong. I have taken it to the local Toyota dealer 3 times and likewise, they found nothing wrong either.
View 3 RepliesToyota - Prius :: 2007 - Front Brakes Sort Of Grinding And Rear Grabbing
I have a 2007 Prius with 130,000 miles on it. I plan to trade in about a year, maybe a little less. I have noticed my brakes grabbing. My mechanic says that the front brakes are sort of grinding and the rear brakes are grabbing. Both are worn, the rear brakes to about 30%, front brakes to 60%. They also say they will probably last out the year. Should I put new brakes on to be safe and to be able to sell the car with new brakes, or should I just wait it out and trade it in with worn brakes?
View 6 RepliesSonata I45 (YF - 2011+) :: Brakes Grabbing When Driving After Cold Start
So I have a 2012 Sonata with about 80k miles on it. I bought it used a few months ago. It has recently started having issues with the brakes.
When the car is cold and I start driving, every time I push down on the brakes they will do a quick grab after a few seconds. Sometimes its a slight grab and other times its a jerking grab. After I drive 10-20 miles or so and it warms up this goes away.
Prius C :: Multiple Beeps When Grabbing Door Handles (Keyless Entry)
My car got into an accident and the driver side door needed to be replaced. My wife picked the car up from the shop, but i guess she did not think anything wrong with the car. My problem is as follows:
When I go to grab the handles of my car (driver, passenger, trunk) with my key fob in close proximity (pocket), instead of the double beep signalling an unlock of the doors, there are multiple beeps (maybe 5 sets of double beeps) along with the emergency flashers flashing.
Prius (2004-09) :: Delayed Tap Noise When Hit The Brakes
I believe this is where the noise is coming from. I get a delayed tap noise when I hit the brakes. If I lift my foot off the brake and hit it again I might not get the noise. It seems forward momentum is need to "reset" whatever is making the noise.
Also.... Right turns at 25 mphs I can hear a rhythmic woob woob woob.
Accept for the tap noise the woob woob woob is hard to hear unless I have a passenger, more so if the passenger is in the rear.
I can't run this Prius into a dealer like I can in the states. I've had this Prius in the Republic of Panama since 2007. They just started selling IV models. This is possibly the 1st Prius in Panama
I had the pads replaced about 25,000 miles ago. There's 106,000 miles on the car.
I step on the rear bumper and bounce the car. The suspension sees stiff/normal. I don't hear any that might be loose.
Prius (2004-09) :: Low Speed Squeaking Brakes
Bought my Prius about 14 months second hand . Despite 112 checks or whatever, within a few months the brakes were grinding. I took it to a local garage and they said the pads were worn to near nothing and replaced them all. They said I had scoring on the rear brake discs, so I replaced them too.
I got really back noise with the front brakes every time I used them after a few weeks. Took it back. Was told that the front discs needed replaced (and off course the front pads again). It was soon back to noisy and they replaced the front pads for nothing. The problem went away for a few days, then returned, but only a very low speed braking (or when putting the final squeeze.)
That garage tried a few things, then said it was my heaving braking glazing the pads, so they roughed them up. Problem hadn't gone. Add to this that the non-moving parts are really rusty looking, it looks naff.
Well, I took it to Kwik Fit having had some time to save some money for a proper fix. They would be happy to replace all discs and pads, but it'd cost abit. Called Toyota, they cost about the same. I left my car with Toyota yesterday pointing out the problem and a few other things I wanted fixing. I made it clear I felt the brake discs and pads were 'crap' and not Toyota and wanted them replaced. They said they'd inspect and do what was necessary.
Well, I've new windscreen wipers, they sorted out a separate problem and cleaned out the front brakes. According to Toyota there is nothing to stop those parts of the brake disc that aren't moving from rusting. They also said the discs and front pads were fine. Well, that squeaky noise is still there.
Why, after practically begging, did they not just replace everything? Is there any other possible explanation for the low braking speed squeak? Why don't brake discs not come with those parts not in contact with the brake pads painted so they won't rust?
Prius (2004-09) :: Extremely Touchy Brakes?
My 2009 Pkg 6 just started having VERY touchy brakes last night. It's almost as if there is a point where the brakes just lock up instead of a gradual regen, then gradual braking. My wife has been the primary driver for the last few days and she said the traction control light flashes briefly for yesterday but the brakes seemed fine until I drove it last night.
View 8 RepliesGolf IV R32 :: Clutch Pedal Not Grabbing Like It Usually Does
Ok so I took my R out to look track to get some 1/4mile passes in. Didn't do anything out of the norm. Took my first pass and noticed that much clutch pedal wasn't feeling right. It wasn't grabbing like it usually does, it was grabbing close to the floor. I took it out of gear and pumped the clutch peddle a few times and then it grabbed like it normally would. I've never had something like this happen in any of my VWs or any other car. What may have happened? I was thinking maybe a slave cylinder issue?
View 7 RepliesPrius (2004-09) :: Brakes Are Too Sensitive When Coming To A Stop
Am a recent owner of an '06 Prius and like the car so far. The only fault is something I have never run into before. The brakes are very sensitive when coming to a stop. I find it almost impossible to feather the pedal and make the stop comfortable.
View 3 RepliesPrius (2004-09) :: Brakes Grabby Right Before Come To A Complete Stop
I notice the brakes are very grabby right before you come to a complete stop. This seems to occur more when this brakes are cold. Is this typical with the gen 2's? Mine in a 2005 if that makes a difference. So far with 2k miles on the car I'm not a big fan of the brakes, but everything else I love.
View 19 RepliesPrius (2004-09) :: Chirping Noise Related To Brakes?
Mostly while negotiating in very crude camp ground roadways, we started to hear a new noise. This started before the incident I will be reporting in my third thread, so I do not attribute this noise to that incident. The noise seems to come from applying the brake when the car is already stopped or nearly stopped. Its a bit of a chirp, but it is a low-throated chirp. It think they come in twos, "chirp, chirp."
View 6 RepliesPrius (2004-09) :: All Lights Related To Brakes Lit On Dash
I bought a 2008 about 7 months ago and have had no trouble with it until yesterday.
The "maintenance required" light's been on for about a week as I haven't had a chance to change the oil yet. I swung by an auto parts place to pull the codes, just to make sure it wasn't indicating a real problem. I started the car and had it "ready" when they plugged it in and got no codes. I shut it off, went in, and got all the stuff I needed for the oil change. Then I drove off and the first time I tried to stop it seemed as if the re-gen brakes were not working, it was harder to stop and the pressure was not linear (even more than usual). I didn't notice till then that the E Brake light was on, the (!) light was on, the ABS light was on, and so was the VSC.
I drove it home. Pulled the positive terminal off the battery and let it sit for a while. Upon starting it again, all lights were still on. Brake res is full so I'm not too worried about the hydraulic brakes. After reading through as many threads on here as I could find, I jumped the 4 and 13 terminals in the OBD port and pulled these codes
(!) - 48 66 95
ABS - 42
VSC - 45
and even a 41 from the tire pressure warning.
Where can I look these up?
Prius (2004-09) :: 2008 - ABS / VSC Warning - Brakes Giving Out
On my commute to work this morning my dash lit up wth warning lights for the ABS and VSC, shortly after I noticed that the brakes were pulsating.
I was in slow traffic becuase of a wreck on the interstate and each time you touched the pedal enough to apply more than regenerative breaking, they would pulsate to the point of shaking the car (at under 7 miles an hour). The car acted as if the system was alternating between applying stopping force and not, several times per second.
Prius (2004-09) :: Brakes Sounds Like Air Pressure Pumps
07 Prius 140k miles. Flushed brakes at 132k miles with techstream directions [URL] ...... Follow the path without actuator or master cylinder removal. Went smoothly, no funny noises or codes after.
Brakes making multiple clicking / pump type of noise within last couple of months under these situations.
1. when nearing a stop
2. crawling along slowly with brakes on
3. backing up which is like #2
Braking force is fine and linear response. Brake fluid reservoir level is good. I'm thinking flushing it again.
Prius (2004-09) :: Brakes Fail To Engage When Put Car Into Gear
I have taken my 2004 Pruis into the Toyota dealership and have been told that there is nothing wrong with my car and it is safe to drive. Here is what is happening.
Sometimes when I start my car and put the car into gear, which you are not supposed to be able to do without your foot on the brake, the car will start rolling before I take my foot off of the brake. I am on level ground when this happens, and I am positive I have my foot firmly on the brake. My first inclination is to push harder on the brake, which does nothing. If I take my foot off of the brake and then reapply it, then the brakes will work and the car will stop.
After this happened a few times, I started paying more careful attention. Whenever this happens, the ABS light is on. When I take my foot off of the brake, the ABS light goes off, and as I said, the brakes work normally.
Furthermore, this only happens if I have been sitting in my parked car for a few minutes with the engine off. It does not happen if I am getting into the car after being away for a few minutes, it only happens if I sit in the car for a few minutes and then turn the car back on to go somewhere.
This is, of course, not only irritating, but unsafe. It can be easy, if you are distracted, to have the car roll into someone or something if you are looking away, thinking that even though you put the car into gear, it will not go anywhere because it is not supposed to go anywhere, you have your foot on the brake!!!!
Prius (2004-09) :: 2005 - Getting Warning Light On Brakes
My 2005 Prius (86 K mi.) has a warning light on - brakes. Put on the scanner and came up with code P1116 coolant temp. sensor circuit stack for coolant heat storage system. Also C1378 - capacitor communication circuit malfunction. I'm just a shade tree mechanic but can usually fix stuff if I know where to start.
