Prius (Gen 3) :: 2013 - Groaning Sounds Occasionally When Applying Brakes
I have noticed brake groaning sounds ocassionally when applying the brakes. When this happens the pedal seems spongy takes longer to stop. After the car is turned off in the garage I have heard the same kinds of sound coming from the car. It almost sounds like the car in sequencing through checks after the system has been turned off.

Last Tuesday my 2012 Prius C brake system failed while I was driving to work. Multiple emergency lights popped on and the brakes lost pressure. I got it towed to the nearest Toyota dealership. That same Tuesday I was told it would cost $3,200 to fix the brake booster. The car has 114,000 miles on it and I have done regular maintenance throughout.
View 13 RepliesGolf IV / Jetta IV :: 2004 - Brake Pedal Seems To Put Pressure Back When Applying Brakes
So I have a 2004 Jetta 1.8t. Recently I noticed an issue with the brakes. It is a rare occurrence that this issue happens. Maybe 1 out 6 times I slowly stop the brake pedal seems to put pressure back against me applying brake pressure and makes somewhat of a grinding noise and the brakes don't seem to grab as well. But a split second later the brakes return to normal and grab as expected. Could it possibly be air in the brake lines or something totally different?
- Front brakes are in excellent condition.
- Just replaced the driver side front abs sensor and put new rear brakes and rotors on.
Lexus GX 2004-09 :: Brakes Surge With More Power When Pedal Held At A Constant Pressure
The brakes surge with more power when the brake pedal is held at a constant pressure. My guess it has to do with the brake booster. But normally a failing booster would result in less braking ability not more.
View 2 RepliesPrius (2004-09) :: Knocking Sounds When Turning
Prius has taken on a new habit. When making turns at any respectable speed, there's a very noticeable knocking sound. I've had the windows rolled down and can't tell whether it's coming from the right side or the left. I'm pretty sure it's coming from the front.
I just put him up on blocks and rolled under to check out the front suspension, turning mechanism and anything else I can see. It wasn't long before I realized what I'm looking at nor am I likely to recognize any problems if I saw it. Having said that, nothing looked broken or dangling.
He's due for a 100,000 mile check-up. Since I'm heading to the dealership, it would be easy for me to have them look at it.
Ford Brakes/Suspension :: Front Brakes Build Up Pressure And Slowly Start To Lock Up / Not Releasing
Initially when I start driving, the brakes work just find. But it seems as I use the brakes, the front brakes build up pressure and slowly start to lock up. They don't lock up completely, but they do cause a significant amount of drag. The rotor, calipers, rubber hoses and master cylinder are all very new. I'm thinking maybe the issue is with the master cylinder and am considering going to get one along with a brake booster(since it doesn't have one currently).
View 14 RepliesFord Brakes/Suspension :: Brakes Need Pumping To Build Pressure?
I'm trying to diagnose thoroughly my braking problems before I start throwing money and time at replacing good parts needlessly. My braking system is on a 1971 f-250 4x4 with a swapped in front and rear 1979 dana 60's. Disc front, drum rears. Brake lines are in excellent shape, with no visible leaks along lines or at fittings. The individual rubber flex hoses at each corners are also sound with no leaks or bulging. Rear cylinders and front brakes are also dry. Master cylinder reservoir leaks a little out the seal under the lid, no big deal I have just kept an eye on it. Topped up front bowl from half the other day. Front pads and rear shoes are fine upon inspection. Brakes are in excellent working order.....when they work!*
So here are the symptoms: When driving, if I step on the brakes, the truck coasts to a stop and pedal goes to floor. However if I pump the brakes 3-5 times, pressure builds up and truck stops great. Than after driving again for even a few seconds that pressure is lost. When truck is parked and off, if I pump the brakes, the system builds pressure and the pedal is firm, when I start it up, the pedal pushes to the floor, turn it off and pedal is firm again.
I mean, I can force it down but I refrain. Are my rear brakes adjusted you ask? That was my first thought since for the past month my pedal travel had been increasing. I adjusted them when I was done inspecting them. I put drums on first, than adjusted both left and right simultaneously(posi rear) until drums would not move, than backed them off a little till I could rotate them with pressure. I have yet to open the system up yet or bleed it. Air in the system seems to be the old go to, but I want to be sure that is the problem as these symptoms exist, before I risk potentially screwing something else up.
Even in my research I have gone down a hundred rabbit holes and found all kinds of people who have done the same. Could this be the master cylinder? Another popular culprit. Could it have an internal leak? I have eliminated the brake booster as the problem because it is dry and when I pull the vacuum hose the brake pedal gets hard. I have an aftermarket ssbc combination proportioning valve on the inside of my frame rail, Could the problem be here? Could the fact that it is extreme cold here lately affect that? Could water and road salt get in it and freeze. Last week I went through some ice into deep water, and the brake travel worsened a couple days after that.
Prius (2004-09) :: Car Sounds Like A Mack Truck Idling Roughly
I came out to my car to go to work and it sounds like a Mack truck idling roughly. I'm trying to get a hold of my mechanic to confirm the problem before calling the police and AAA and my insurance. He hasn't called back, so I'm dead in the water sitting in my car.

View 7 RepliesPrius (2004-09) :: Loud Gurgling Sounds Indicating That There Was Air In System
I took my 2007 to the dealer yesterday to have spark plugs replaced and both coolants drained and filled. They did this in less than 2 hours. After the service, as I started driving away, I heard very loud gurgling sounds indicating that there was air in the system. When I stopped at a light, the gas engine did not shut off like it normally should, and the entire car was shuddering. When I accelerated again, I got a bunch of emergency lights and the gas engine shut off. I pulled over and turned the car off. When I turned it back on, the only remaining warning lights were the red triangle of death and check engine light. (I didn't see which other lights came on, as I was frantically trying to pull over safely). I managed to limp back to the dealer and I'm awaiting their call.

Before I start, when I drive, and after I shut down (for 10 minutes) my 06 sounds like a machine gun is firing in the far distance, also a buzzing noise is happening. This continues when I drive the car as well. It drives me nuts!! See video for better representation of what I am talking about. Maybe it's the pump for the coolant pre tank but I don't see how this could be normal. This is my first prius, other than this noise the car is excellent.
View 8 RepliesPrius (2004-09) :: Gen II - Exhaust Leak Sounds Like Vacuum Cleaner
I have an exhaust leak that has gotten worse and is quite loud now. I have been under the car and a mechanic just checked what he could without a lift and didn't find any leaks. Yesterday, I had it up on ramps and looked under and think the sound is coming from where a heat shield is. When I'm in the car the noise sounds like it's slightly in front of me.
View 3 RepliesPrius (2004-09) :: 2007 - Alarm Sounds Whenever Door Is Unlocked
I bought a 2007 Prius this week and I am having trouble with the door lock/unlock procedure. I have read and re-read the manual and feel I am doing everything correctly. What is happening is I can lock the car, either with the push button on the handle or with the key fob. When I return to unlock the car 2 things may happen. Either I get within 2 feet of the car and the alarm goes off or I can get close enough to touch the door handle and then the alarm goes off. Either way, I then have to use the fob to turn off the alarm noise and then I can unlock the car. All rather embarrassing and I'm getting tired of looking like an idiot! The worst part is when I was back at the used car dealer briefly yesterday and went to show him the problem, it behaved perfectly which was the only time it worked ever for me. I have tried both of my key fobs and the same thing happens with both of them.
View 13 RepliesPrius (2004-09) :: Sudden Suspension Sounds - Creak / Squeak And Ding
I have a 2005 with just a touch over 95K on it. I know I'm due (and maybe a little overdue!) for plenty of scheduled maintenance prescribed in the "Passport" between 90K and 100K but I've been pretty laissez-faire about doing much other than changing the oil every 3K and telling my mechanic to "just make sure everything looks alright" since I picked up the vehicle at 70K miles. I know - there should be some audible sighs from more responsible owners, a finger-wag or two, maybe even a reply chastising me for being so frugal about the maintenance. Probably pretty well-deserved. The original owner was nothing short of OCD with the maintenance so I consider myself pretty lucky. In my defense, however, I'll tell you: there's never been a thing wrong with the car in over 20K miles. Not a peep, squeak, growl, groan, whatever. Other than getting fairly inefficient mileage (~42 city/~48 highway - I live in a very hilly place and the hills always seem to be going "up" rather than "down" for some reason...)

View 6 RepliesFord Transmission :: Noise From 4R100 Sounds Like High Pressure Fluid Passing Through A Restriction
This is on my 99 v10 Superduty. What I'm hearing sounds like high pressure fluid passing through a restriction. I only hear it when in drive or reverse while sitting still. The noise goes away once I get moving a couple of miles per hour. It just started making this noise within the last week.
I change the fluid every other oil change (about 6000mi on the last change) and am using M1 Synth in it. I only drive 10min between work and home so it probably barely gets warm. I don't know yet if it there hot. I'll have take it up the hill and back to see if it is temperature related.
Other then the noise it still drives and shifts fine. But it is pretty loud sitting at the drive through window. I'm going to drain it and change the filter this weekend and see how the fluid looks. Any thing else I should look at or other possibilities? I crawled under it last night and I think the noise is coming from the TC.
Passat (B6) :: Front Brakes Make Rubbing Noise That Sounds Like A Honk
So after I come to a full stop and then release the pedal to start moving again the front brakes make a rubbing noise that sounds like a "honk". Im not sure if this is a trait of Automatic cars as the car is trying to push foward on its own. My previous cars were all stick. My wifes car (Auto also) does not do this. Also the Auto Hold feature is very jarring when you step on the gas to go the car almost lurches foward as the brake disengages. Is it just my car or is there something that needs adjustment?
