Elantra XD (2001-06) :: Power Steering Leak / Fluid Below Passenger Side Of Rack
My power steering seems to have sprung a leak. There is quite a bit of fluid below the passenger side of the steering rack. The leak seems to be right below where the power steering hose comes down off the pump, gets secured to the chassis and changes to metal line from rubber. The metal line then goes into an L bend and is routed towards the driver side right where the leak apparently is.
I haven't had a chance to have a good look, as it was 10:30 at night when I parked it and looked (12km of careful city driving since it started to act up)
Is this a high pressure or return line?
The leak seems to be forward of the steering rack, so hopefully I wont have to replace it.
Passat (B5) :: Leak In Power Steering Fluid Return
I know I have a leak in my power steering fluid return. I bought the big expensive green jug and top it off when I need to. The past few days, when I start up my car and turn around in the driveway, there's a groan when I turn the wheel in either direction.
View 3 RepliesFord F-150 (2004-2008) :: Power Steering Fluid Leak Coming From Transfer Line
I am a new owner of a 2004 F-150 FX4. Bought the truck with a leaking power steering and I have isolated the root cause of the leak. It is coming from the "transfer line" attached to the center of the rack. The top portion has simply rotted through. I have searched the forum and google for about a week and only found one thread where someone actually asked about replacing the hard line on the rack. Unfortunately, no one chimed in with a part source and all my searches only come up with a HP line or Return line....no hard transfer line leading from the rack to the gear box.
View 7 RepliesPassat (B5) :: 1998 - Power Steering Fluid Leaking From Right Side
Bought a 98 last week and noticed an issue a couple of days ago. The car seems to be leaking power steering fluid from right in front of passenger front tire. Looks like it's coming down from somewhere behind the bumper, just not sure what line are over there. I had to replace one of the clamps on the line below the ps bottle and it seemed to be fine for 2 days.
The weird part is that it doesn't seem steady. I had the car parked in one spot for an hour the first time I noticed the problem and the wet spot was about a foot in diameter. But then I drove the car last night and left it parked in the driveway for hours and nothing. This morning when I was leaving there was a puddle about 4" in diameter.
Alero :: 2002 - Power Steering Leak Developed On Driver Side Near Front Wheel
A Power Steering leak has developed on my 2002 Alero's driver side near the front wheel. I've been aware from other posts that it may be the Rack and Pinion, a power steering pump or a seal. There has been no noises in my steering when I drive and its steering well as it ever was. I am wondering is there a way to detect what of the three things it may be?, without taking it into a dealership or shop?
View 4 RepliesFord 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel :: Air Leak Sound Coming From Driver Side
I have an air leak sound coming from I believe the driver side. Sounds like an air line from a compressor leaking. Could see anything obvious last night or hear well over engine. When driving it's pushing more air. Nothing looked/felt loose. Didn't find any air blowing were I could stick my hand in a hot engine. Doesn't seem to have performance issue, maybe a little more turbo delay.
View 3 RepliesFord 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel :: Leak Coming From Top / Driver Side / Rear Of Engine
I have developed a leak coming from the top, driver side, rear of my engine and I could not figure out where it was coming from. I took it to a reputable shop for diagnosis and they tell me that the rear leak is coming from the transmission lines.
The weird thing is I never thought the leak looked like ATF. They also told me that it looks like the stock radiator/cooler has been bypassed so I have no cooler.
Should I assume that the stock internal cooler failed and that is why the PO bypassed it? Also is there a decent write up on deleting these lines and running soft transmission lines to a aftermarket cooler?
Ford - Escape :: Fluid Leak Under The Oil Pan On Driver Side
Tonight when I was on my way in from taking the trash out, I happened to notice a puddle under my 04 Ford Escape. The car has been sitting in its parking spot for about a week (cold and mostly sunny weather, but some light rain, frost, and ice recently) so I figured it was just a bit of moisture from melting frost...worry wort that I am, though, I decided to investigate. It looked like it was in the area of my oil pan so I thought the size of the puddle warranted an investigation. I moved the car back a bit and tried to soak up whatever it was with a paper towel (soaked moisture up, but colorless).
I checked the oil levels (puddle was the size of a it small frisbee, so I have to imagine that if it were oil, I would notice a change in the levels) and saw no change since I last checked about a month ago. While I was trying to look like I know what I am doing, I noticed a new oil drop on the pavement - under the oil pan on the drivers side. I have replaced the pan gasket within the last 2 years and know that the car has a timing cover leak, but that has been fairly limited to the passenger's side.
The oil pan looked dirty, and showed SOME evidence of an small oil leak, but the other spot I noticed worried me a bit more: behind the oil pan (looks like it is almost center of the front axel) there is a fluid leak of some kind. Whatever the fluid is, it looks to be clear and has a slight hint of an odor (not sweet, not oily...sort of like stale water). When I turned the car on to back it up, I had the defrosters running. All in all, I would say they were on a total of 45 seconds, but the "water" is still dripping several hours later.
Sonata NF (2006-10) :: 2009 2.4L - Steering Rack Leaking PS Fluid
2009 Sonata 2.4L ... About 60 000km ago, the complete steering rack was replaced under warranty. Now I notice the PS fluid going down in the PS reservoir. I checked for any loose fittings, all look OK. But I did notice PS droplets hanging from the steering rack boots. So today I replaced the PSF4 fluid with Amsoil PS fluid. I suspect maybe some seals are leaking. Any good product I can use to maybe stop the leaks?

View 3 RepliesSanta FE SM (2001-06) :: Fluid Spraying From Some High Pressure Line Under Car By Steering Rack
I own a 03' 2.7 Santa Fe (2wd) and when I got home last night i noticed that she was smoking like crazy (not overheating). Opened the hood looked under the car and noticed some fluid spraying on the the exhaust and leaking down from there which was causing the smoke. I put her on jack stands and noticed what looks like to be some hard (i think pressurized) lines that are attached to a connector of some sort in front of the steering rack. What lines are these? Power steering? oil cooler? Transmission related? The fluid that is leaking looks like transmission fluid cause its reddish brown. Ive worked on a few other cars before but not too familiar with Hyundai. When i get home later I will take a pic of this area and post a picture. And it looks like its spraying from the connecting lines (maybe a crush washer gone bad? ) not sure. I can't seem to find any image of this area online either.

View 9 RepliesJetta - Volkswagen :: 2000 - Steering Rack Keeps On Failing - Coolant Leak?
Here are my questions.
1. What can cause repeated steering rack failures, which I am trying to dianose?
2. I found yellow spots in the snow that would come from the center of the vehicle (as opposed to near the wheels), could this be from the coolant system?
If you got that far, here is the relevant history. My wife drives my 2000 Jetta, its a nice car with repeated problems. One such problem is with the steering rack. 1. The steering rack failed in 2006, it was an expensive fix. It was leaking for a while, but I just topped off the fluid every couple of weeks. 2. Within a year the steering rack failed again, it was still under warranty. 3. 2 years later, the rack failed for a third time. I wrangled with the shop and they agreed to reduce my price for the fix even though the part was no longer under warranty. They had the car for a week trying to diagnose the problem, they said they found nothing out of the ordinary. I took the car to another mechanic a week later for some other issue, and he saw leaking from the fill plug--back to the dealer again. They said they cleaned the washers around the plug to fix the problem. No problems since then. Now its almost two years later and I have found a couple yellow spots in the snow, although near the center of the car and not near the wheels. This makes me think it may actually be a coolant leak, but I don't know right now.
Acura - Cl :: 1998 - White Steam Coming From Front Right Hand Side / Leak Of Fluid
Acura 98 2.3 CL: Looking from the driver's seat, I saw white steam coming from the right hand side of the front. When I came out of the car and opened the hood (now, facing the car as if in oncoming traffic) I noticed the white steam came from the center-left side of the engine area (not the engine). There was also a fluid (slick but not oil - it smelled more like cooling fluid, or some kind of fluid) that was under the car, and it was not just a little bit - it dripped all over an area, probably the size of a small doormat, in the pattern of the car's movement as I parallel parked the car. It has been very cold the last few days, and all the sudden warmed up this week. Some more information:
The white steam and fluid only appeared/dripped three to four minutes after turning ON the de-fogger
the white steam came from the center-right (from the driver's seat vantage point) or, center-left (vantage point of someone facing the car).
the car, after being turned off, made a humming sound and then clicked off
The fluid from the car was slick but not oil (or not purely oil). It again reminded me more of a fluid, it did not smell like oil.
What is this? A blown gasket? Ruptured coolant area? Luckily the car did not do this until I parked it at home (it all happened within a period of about 120 seconds). I am concerned enough that I will not drive it and have it towed to the mechanic to fix. I love this car. (Is there anything I should ask the tower? From what I have been told there is a RIGHT way to tow the Acura!)
Camry :: 2011 (55k Miles) Power Steering Fluid Leak
My Camry 2011 (55k miles) had complaints of power steering fluid leak and needs rack and pinion assembly replacement.
I have powertran warranty only, so this one is not covered and when asked for the dealership for estimate, they said it would cost around 1700$.
Can i get this replacement done at local shop, if so will there be any problem to my powertran warranty ?
Golf IV R32 :: Groaning When Turning - Power Steering Fluid (Big Leak)
I was driving home the other day when i heard a groaning when turning. i stopped to check the power steering fluid at O'PepZone and it was really low. i bought some fluid poured it in while the car was running. it foamed a bit from all the air but then the PSF started emptying out of the reservoir underneath the car.
By the time i got home it was groaning and basically empty of PSF again. when i crawled under the car, i saw a lot of fluid on the passenger (right ) side of the car by the subframe and a little bit by the driver (left) side of the car. the leaks seem to be from the ends of the rack and pinion. no detectable leaks by the hose/hard line connections.
Other than the leak(s), the steering has felt very good. no play to speak of and no weird sounds either.
This makes me wonder if i somehow damaged the seals when i installed my PSS9 coilovers....

In the picture I attached, the large silver bolt is leaking. Its a slow leak: yesterday morning I wiped it off, and then we I got home from work there was a bead of power steering fluid, but not enough to drip.
What is the best way to fix this? Is it as simple as tightening it?
