Toyota - Camry :: 2002 - Hard To Start / Starter Would Crank Just Fine But Engine Would Not Fire

Camry 2002 LE (4 cyl Auto), 140K mi

This morning, for the first time I can recall, the car would not start right away. Had been sitting in the garage for 2+ days. Starter would crank just fine, but engine would not fire. No lites were left on overnite. Finally (after about 6+ attempts), engine started -- runs fine now.

Took it to TOY dealer. Their diagnosis: weak battery, alternator low output.Happy, had recently (6 mos) replaced battery after 4 years of use, so got a new battery N/C.TOY ran a charging system check and it shows "Alternator Condition: OK" (midway between shitty and great I recall).

Funny, but my first thought when it would not start was the fuel system (fuel pump) or dirty ignitors. I did ask my regular mechanic for an opinion, and he thinks it might indeed be the fuel pump -- perhaps a clogged filter.

Passat (B6) :: 2006 - Starter Cranked But Couldn't Start The Engine

After a long hour working day, B6 could not start in company's parking lot. The temperature is not cold, the battery is not dead, has plenty gas in the tank. The starter cranked but couldn't start the engine. What should I try? Change the starter? if i need parts, I will grab from store and try to fix it in parking lot. if not, I have to tow it to dealer tomorrow.

Lexus GX 2004-09 :: Hard Start - Vehicle Sometimes Takes 3 Or 4 Tries Of Turning Key Before Engine Fires Up

Over the last week my GX has developed a strange issue. It sometimes takes 3 or 4 tries of turning the key before the engine fires up. It turns over strongly and quickly but it isn't "catching". The weird thing is, it doesn't happen every time. Here is what I have noticed:

1) Leave the vehicle parked overnight - no issues starting. It starts right up.

2) Crank the vehicle after having only been off a few minutes (like after you run in to pick something up at the grocery store) it cranks right up.

3) Let the vehicle sit for between 1 and 4 or 5 hours and the problem appears. It turns over and over and over but won't actually start. Anywhere between the 3rd and 5th turn of the key it will finally catch and actually crank.

In all cases, once it cranks it runs smoothly and normally with no issues.

I have replaced the battery thinking that was the issue but that did not fix the problem. Also strange is the fact that this problem occurred after I replaced both front door speakers, an operation that required me to have one or more doors open for an hour or so at a time (hence why I thought it might be a weak battery).

Passat (B5) :: Rapid Clicking Starter But Not Turning Over

Just yesterday, my 2001.5 Passat GLX had trouble starting. I got a lot of rapid clicking and after a few tries, it finally turned over. Then I drove it around a bit and it started fine after a quick lunch. A few hours later, it hesitated again, so i thought maybe I didn't charge it up enough, so I took a trip down to my local Kragen and thought I'd get the battery tested just in case.

They did a test of the battery with some handheld device and said it came back fine. The guy did say that if I could take the battery out and bring it back, they could test it in a different machine, though, but otherwise the battery was charging fine and was holding the charge fine.

This morning I started up the car to see if it would start. Started fine. Then I did it again and it started fine again. OK, must have just drained somehow and now it's got some juice again. Fast forward to this afternoon and my wife was going to the grocery store and she says "The car is dead!". Yup, dead. Just rapid clicking again, but not turning over.

After checking out some threads in here it looks like it could be the battery. And it is about 5 years old according to the date sticker on it (Duralast, btw). So to test it as best I could, I charged it up with a battery charger, then took a reading with my multimeter. With the car off, I could literally see the voltage dropping in the readings. It started around 13v, but got progressively lower and lower as if it was a timer counting down seconds. I then disconnected the Terminals and took more readings. This time the voltage maintained it's reading and was static.

ok, so now maybe something is draining the battery (and fast!). One thing I noticed when I re-connected the Terminals is a sort of whining sound coming from the area of the coolant reservoir. When I put my ear closer, I could hear liquid moving around there. Is that normal that it would be on when the car if off? Could that be my culprit?

Cavalier :: When Turns The Key Can Hear Starter Kick Out But Engine Not Turning On

My friends cavalier stopped running about a week ago. It is a 98 with the 2.2 liter. When she turns the key you can hear the starter kick out but it wouldn't turn the engine. I figured it was the starter solenoid, but just to play it safe I took the starter off and had it tested. the starter passed. I put it back on but I left the flywheel cover off, I had her turn the key and you can see the flywheel turn a little bit, so I am pretty sure the starter is fine. I am not sure where to go from here, everything seems to be working fine but the engine just wont crank. I can turn the engine by hand so it doesn't seem like its stuck.

Ford Excursion :: 6.0L - Starter Not Turning Engine - Click Sound

Drove about 10 mins and parked. Came back 5 mins later and wouldn't start. Starter click can be heard when trying to crank but doesn't turn engine. Checked fuse (#113) and starter relay - both are good. AAA came out and tried to jump but no success. Flat bed towed back to my house last night.

This morning, woke up bright and early to pick up brand new Napa Premium starter. Replaced it thinking that was it. No dice- same thing, 1-click, no turning of engine.

Batteries & terminals both good & clean. Hooked up 2 additional fully charged deep cell marine batteries via jumper cables and no difference. Voltage @ starter terminal = 12.4V.

When cranking, voltage drops all the way down to 1-2V if holding the key in the crank position (1 click and then nothing). Returns back up to ~12V when released.

Jumped pos terminal to starter solenoid, got clicking but doesn't turn engine. Is my tranny or engine frozen...?!

Toyota - 4runner :: 1987 - Hard To Start / Starter Does Not Disengage Immediately

My 1987 Toyota 4Runner 22RE has a weird cold starting issue. When the temperature is in the low 30s F or below I have to use the gas pedal when I first start it (for only a few seconds) in order to make the starter disengage. If I don't push the gas pedal it chugs at around 250 RPM and the starter remains engaged. If I kick in a little more gas (up to about 1,500 RPM) the starter will immediately disengage and then it runs just fine at around 800 - 900 RPM.

When it's warm out (40 F or higher) it starts up and runs perfectly without any of the aforementioned happening.

Maybe related is the following: when the weather is warmer out this SOMETIMES happens: the engine idles too high (1,100+, sometimes up to 1,700). If I "kick" the gas pedal this usually knocks the idle back down but not to 750 - 800 where is should be.

I have thought about replacing the (I think it's called) idle air control valve (the big metal thing with the flappy gate inside) that sits atop the air intake above the driver's side headlight I want to replace this only if it's going to fix it.

Cherokee :: Hard Time To Start - Power Died On Turning Key

Was at the gym, went to turn key and the power died, figured it was the NSS because ive had this problem before, mess with the stick a little bit and power will come back. Was having a harder time this time, so got a buddy to jump me and it got power and started up. On the way home every time id slow down to a stop the power would drain and the car would almost die. As i was pulling in my drive way, luckily, it died and i coasted in.

Figured it was the battery so i switched mine with my brothers. Was putting on the connectors and was having a hard time because sparks kept hitting me in the arm and id flinch and pull it back off, bolts wouldn't tighten, etc. FINALLY got a good connection and the wipers and lights stayed on and wouldn't turn off (even if the key was out of the car). Tried to start it and just a sustained whirl or a spinning, almost like a vacuum cleaner.

Passat (B5) :: No Start - Shifting Gears Allow Starter To Engage

2003 Passat 1.8t FWD.

My buddy is having a wierd issue that just recently started after it's gotten cold out. The car would not start for him so he had me look at it. Attempting to start there's no sound from the starter at all. Battery is fine. When I shift in and out of a few gears, the starter engages and the car starts. Stop the car. Attempt to start it again and nothing. Shift through the gears some more and the car almost starts but quickly dies. Shift some more, start, running like a champ.

What is it about shifting through the gears that allows the starter to engage and the car to run again?

Ford - Escape :: 2010 - Hard To Start On Chilly Days / Hesitate On Turning Over

I have a 2010 which lately has been having difficulty starting on chilly days. That's saying something considering i live in Memphis, where the cold days are relatively mild. Sometimes it will hesitate on turning over, start and then my gauges flutter and the car shakes a little. Other times it makes a high pitched cranking noise. I haven't taken it anywhere yet because it seems to exclusively happen in the morning after the car has been sitting for 10 hours.

Gmc - Yukon :: Starter Spins Fine But Engine Won't Start

'99 Yukon. Starter spins engine fine but engine won't start. Spray a quick shot of starter fluid or drip some gas on the air filter and it starts fine. After sitting idle for a half hour or so the situation returns. Car will run highway speeds (70-80mph) fine and will handle stop and go in town. Local mechanic wants to replace the fuel pump, which was replaced a couple of years (30,000 miles) ago. This seems an expensive first step with no diagnostics done.

Okay so I have a 2004 Dodge Ram Hemi, the truck was running fine all this weekend and was fine this morning. Went out at lunch and used the automatic starter button while walking to it and wouldn't start. It turn over and wants to start you can hear it trying to catch but it won't catch unless you put some starter fluid in. Just changed all 16 spark plugs, all 8 coil packs, wires and 2 valve springs about 2 weeks ago have been running fine since and now this. What it could be?

Ford - Ranger :: 1995 - Starter Cranks / Engine Turns Over But Will Not Start

I have a 1995 Ford Ranger, manual shift. It always starts when cold, but sometimes -- very sporadic -- it will not start after I've gone somewhere. This has happened maybe 8 times over the past 18 months or so. Always, after sitting a while, it starts right up as though nothing happened. Several months ago I left it with a mechanic for an entire week, but he could never get it to act up. Of course.

In browsing through these discussions, I've seen the "starter/clutch interlock switch" mentioned. Here is my question, though. Would the starter still crank if that was the problem? or does that switch stop the starter from engaging?

When mine acts up, the starter cranks, the engine turns over ... it just acts like it's not getting fuel. Is that a starter/clutch interlock switch issue? Or something else?

BMW :: 1985 - Sporadic Brief Stalling / Starter Spins Engine With No Hint Of A Start

Got a problem that has left me in circles. 85 BMW 325e, manual. Won't start. Previously had some driveability problems, sporadic brief stalling. Using the key in ignition switch, starter spins the engine with no hint of a start.

1. IGN components all test to spec and during start attempt there is spark on all cylinders.
2. Fuel flow and pressure is within spec, both when FP relay is jumped and during start attempt.
3. Speed and reference sensors test good.
4. All inputs to dme have been tested, including power and grounds, and are good.

Accent RB (2012+) :: Starter Engaged And Turned Over And Over But Engine Wouldn't Start

I have about 26,000 Miles on it, this afternoon I tried to start it. The starter engaged and turned over and over and over, but the engine wouldn't start. Then I took the key out, waited 5 seconds, and tried again, it started. It was about 60 degrees out, so it wasn't cold. Half a tank of gas.

This may seem a little petty, but its a 2012 with only 26,000 Miles on it.

Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: 1998 4.6L - Starter Cranks Over The Engine But Intermittent No Start

I'm a relatively new F150 owner (just got rid of the 98 Ranger I drove since 99), so I thought I'd check in to see if I was overlooking something obvious. A few days ago, after driving to the store with no obvious issues, I went shopping (coincidentally for oil change materials) and when I returned to my truck it would not start.

Here is a bit of info:

Starter cranks over the engine.
Battery is relatively new, and has plenty of power.
I can hear the fuel pump kick on briefly.
Check engine light is on (EGR Valve fault).
Engine started with starter fluid.
Engine ran like normal after starting.

Finally, the vehicle started/ran fine for a few days before the issue occurred again.

Like I said, I'm not too familiar with the vehicle yet, but I'm assuming the issue must be with the fuel delivery system. I plan on replacing the EGR valve, but I am curious whether a faulty EGR valve cause a no start? Also, I'm wondering if it's more likely that the fuel pump is going bad, or something electrical is the problem since I'm under the impression that the engine stops sending fuel to the cylinder if/when the engine doesn't start quickly after turning the key.
