Alero :: 2000 / 3.4L - Humming Noise Near The Front End
I have a 2000 Olds Alero 3.4L. The car has been making a "humming" noise near the front end. It sounds a lot like the noise you hear when driving on rough road. It happens no matter what gear the automatic transmission is in. It changes sound with speed (most prevalent at 40 MPH). The sound also changes when I turn the wheel - it is worse when I turn left going down the highway and the noise is less when I turn right. I have replaced the driver side wheel bearing, the drivers side dive axel (I noticed the CV boot was leaking), none of this worked. It sounds like it is on the drivers side so I have not messed with the passenger side. (CV joints look fine on the passenger side). I put the car on a lift and ran through the gears - there is a vibration (car shakes) as the tires speed up - but I can't tell if it is a tire or something else. I need to know what this might be - transmission? -Tire? -Passenger Hub?
View 6 RepliesPhaeton :: 2004 W12 - Humming Noise In Front End
I have a humming noise coming from the front end of my 2004 W12. I only notice the noise at highway speeds and it appears to only be audible when I turn the wheel to the right. For example, when traveling on the highway and the road bends slightly to the right or when I move into the right lane, I hear a faint hum coming from the wheel(s).
I started hearing the hum a few days ago but dismissed it as a symptom of my Phaeton Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (POCD). While driving to and from DC last night on a night out with my wife, she commented on the presence of the hum as well.
I just had the LF wheel bearing replaced 2 weeks ago. Here are some possibilities I'v thought of:
RF wheel bearing
Low Power Steering Fuild
Other Steering Problems (leaking rack)
On a related note, where do you check the power steering fluid level? I can't seem to find the reservoir.
Golf/GTI VI :: Humming Noise Coming From Front
I have these in 225/40R-18 on VW Goal rims (MkVI GTi). Last month I hit a nice size pot hole and put a very small bend in the outer lip of the right front rim. No mark on the rim, so the tire took the hit. Had a peak inside and the tire was bruised pretty good. Around this same time I noticed a faint humming that seemed to be coming from the front. Figured an inner ply shifted so I replaced that single tire (10,000 on the others).
So the humming is still there and getting a little louder. I've rotated a couple times but the sound is the same. Non-distinct location; seems like it could be coming from all 4 corners.
Golf IV R32 :: Humming Noise From The Front Of The Motor?
So I noticed while doing some cleaning under the hood today that something was humming or buzzing from the front of the motor. I also noticed that whatever it was was making my oil dipstick vibrate. Is this normal because I just left somewhere and the car had a little issue getting started. I had the battery and alternator tested on the way home and they are fine.
View 4 RepliesPrius (2004-09) :: Humming Noise From The Front Occasionally?
I can hear a strange noise from the front occasionally, independent to my operation. It sound like rolling a cassette tape in a old driver. The sound repeats every several minutes, and lasts about 5 seconds each time.
When I standing outside the car, it hears louder from under the bonnet.
Cadillac - Deville :: 2003 - Humming Noise In The Front
I recently had a lot of repair done to my 2003 cadillac: new bearings in both front wheels, new power steering line, rotors turned, cv axel replaced.I also bought new Michelin "Symmetry" tires as I am taking a long trip.
I had Toyo tires with some wear and had them rotated at another place other than my mechanic's. After that I noticed the humming noise in the front; it sounds like it is coming fron the driver's side and is most noticeable when I drive 35 or 40 mph. My mechanic said he checked everything carefully and couldn't figure out the problem.
Prius (2010-12) :: Low Humming Noise From The Front While Driving
Just got recently used prius 2010 and noticing low humming noise while driving.. every couple of minutes at slow speeds.. not sure how it is at higher speeds. Sounds that noise coming from somewhere front.. and remind like air conditioner in older car moving some parts when you switch from hot to cold . is that normal? sounds happen when ac is on and off.
View 7 RepliesGMC - K1500 :: Humming Noise Coming From Front Differential
Firstly the truck in question is a 1994 GMC K1500 5 speed 350TBI.
Ok so I'm not sure what is causing the noise I'm hearing. its a humming that I think is coming from the front differential but I'm not sure, maybe it is the transfer case but it certainly feels like its in the front end and my steering does seem affected while in four wheel drive. It only makes the noise while in four wheel drive.
I have one off size tire on the rear end and I'm not sure if the actual tread circumference is the same between the front and rear tires or if any of this would really cause my four wheel drive to act up. I am planning on putting a new set of matched tires on it soon, so if they are the cause of the problem then that's good news.
Passat (B6) :: Getting Humming Noise At 55 Plus Mph?
I just started getting a humming sound at 55+ mph coming from the front left side of the car. the pitch of the hum changes with the speed of the car and goes away as you slow down. i can't hear anything when i roll the window down because of the wind.
i plan to let it get worse until i take it to the dealer. they do not fix anything unsell it is totally broken.
Cherokee :: 98 ZJ 5.2L - Humming Noise After Replaced All Front End Steering Parts
My '98 ZJ 5.2L. I just replaced pretty much all of the front end steering parts because there was a lot of play going on and most of the boots didn't seem to hold grease. I replaced my tie rod ends, center link, drag link, and steering stabilizer. I did my best to align the tires using a tape measurer and ended up within 1/8 inch difference. I couldn't get it any closer than that, so I left it. Now, my Jeep is humming whenever I turn the wheel. Normally, I might look to either the power steering pump or some of the front end parts, but seeing as I just replaced pretty much all of them and I replaced my power steering pump last winter.
View 1 RepliesLexus LS 2007+ :: 2011 - Slight Humming Noise From The Front
I have a 2011 with 42k. While doing a front brake job, I noticed that the driver's side wheel hub while rotating it sounded noisy, it did not rotate as smoothly when compared to the right side. I have also noticed while driving that their is a slight humming noise from the front but always attributed it to the Bridgestone Turanazas. Maybe it is the tires and I just over reacting. Is this normal for the hub? Here is a video clip with sound. Is this wheel hub going bad?
View 3 RepliesHyundai - Accent :: 2006 - Humming Noise In Front End While Driving
My 2006 hyundai accent makes a humming noise while driving. it gets louder the faster i accelerate. I have checked the wheel bearing but they appear to be fine. i jacked the car up and tested the wheel by pulling and pushing back and forth at the 12 o' clock position and etc. no give in either wheel. i also held the spring and spun both wheels with no vibration. I also rotated tires back to front. when i did this noise seemed to be lower. But still there. I did hit a fallen sign on the highway going 70 mph. I am wondering if this may have damaged my tires or if it still could be wheel bearing. and there is no vibration in steering wheel or while driving. just annoying humming.
View 1 RepliesSonata I45 (YF - 2011+) :: Low Pitch Humming Noise From Front End At Low Speeds
Layely with my 2011 SE I've been getting a low pitch humming noise while traveling at low speeds, mainly going into a stop sign or light and searching for a parking spot. It happens with the AC off as well, not so much a vibration just a low pitch hum, also does it with foot off brake too as I just let it coast. Kind of annoying and want to make sure its good.
View 5 RepliesHonda - Odyssey :: Buzzing / Humming Noise Is Emitted From The Front Of Car
Once the car reaches about 80 miles per hour, a buzzing/humming noise is emitted from the front of the car. I can't tell whether it's from the dashboard area or the footwell area, but it sounds like it's coming from below. There seems to be an exact speed where the noise stops and ends. The car does not shake or vibrate when the noise occurs.
The noise has happened twice. Not coincidentally, those were the only two time the car has been above 75 or so miles per hour within the past few weeks. I have looked on some forums for similar happenings, and I found the answer could be bad wheel bearings.
Other problems with the car include a very-vibraty engine between 1000 & 1500 RPM, a gurgling noise at low speeds/idle, and harsh shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear.
I've posted a video on YouTube of the car making the noise. It's a little hard to hear the noise in the video: [URL] .....
Ford Excursion :: Humming Noise On Front End After Driving 350 Miles
The front end on the ex started humming really bad today after driving 350 miles to Memphis Tennessee. When I noticed the humming I pulled over and unlocked the hubs thinking the front axle is low on gear oil. No change when back on the interstate. If I turn right at highway speeds the noise completely goes away. While driving straight its pretty loud. The more I turn left the louder it gets. Just had the front end apart to do all ball joints tie rod ends etc. the hubs looked great and didnt have any play at all. The noise happens between 40-65 mph. After 70 mph the noise goes away. Doesn't go away when I let of the pedal, hit the brakes, put in neutral while driving, or accelerate. Could it be the hubs?
View 14 RepliesSilverado :: 4 Wheel Drive - Humming / Rubbing Noise Coming From The Front End
I have a 2002 Silverado 1500 Z-71. In 4 wheel drive, I can hear a humming/rubbing noise from the front end. Not real loud, but enough to get my attention. It happens at around 25 mph, and just as I'm coming to a stop. This is on the street.....going straight, not while turning. I only engage the 4 HI during street driving on a straight line drive just to "exercise" the gears and transfer case. I don't notice it on the dirt 'cause of trial noise levels. All fluid levels are normal in transfer case and axles. How much noise is normal during 4 wheel drive operations?

Ok at 40 mph and above I have a loud humming noise coming from my left front wheel. I replaced my rotor and pads due to normal wear. I also replaced the bearing. No fix. Tires were rotated a month ago. Could it be my CV joint? The boots are fine.
View 3 RepliesSubaru - Outback :: Low Humming Noise Started At Around 40 MPH Or So - Front Engine Cowling
I noticed a low humming noise lately on my wife's 2007 Outback which started at around 40 MPH or so. I thought it might be something with the added roof rack attachment or tires which are Michellen Rain Force tires installed about a year ago. It sounds like an aerodynamic issue to me. Nothing has changed on the roof racks and the tires show no sings at all of unusual wear.
I looked in front of the vehicle and underneath to see if I could see something and noticed the cowling immediately under the exhaust manifold and where I removed the small door for frequent oil changes is bowed down in the rear creating a scoop which I think is the humming noise. I am trying to find the darn door in the garage so I can re-install it, but it got me thinking, is the whole cowling even necessary to have under there?
I know it can prevent rocks and things from hitting the underside of the engine, but is it really more for simply aerodynamics? It is a pain sometimes working underneath because it blocks access to everything. I was thinking of simply removing the entire contraption.
Malibu - Chevrolet :: Humming Noise From The Front When Turning Left On The Highway
I have a 2002 Malibu and we have had the car about 3 years and since we purchased the car it has what a humming noise from the front when changing lanes on the highway or when making curves on the highway only when turning left.
Being an avid Car Talk listener, I decided this was probably being caused by wheel bearings and I decided to tackle the job myself and changed both left and right front wheel hubs and the noise did not change, it is still there exactly as before ! I also replaced the brake pads and rotors while it was apart.
Remembering other car talk conversations, I decided next that it must be the tires, I replaced the tires which were due for replacement anyway and guess what ? The noise is still there exactly as before !
Out of ideas, I took it to a mechanic and he said that he ran the car on the lift and was able to reproduce the noise on the lift and he felt it was coming from the differential within the transmission. While it was at the shop I had him do a wheel alignment as well to eliminate any sort of suspension issue.
My question, does this make any sense ? To me when the car is on the lift, the differential really isn't doing anything, the wheels aren't turning at different speeds because they aren't touching anything therefore to me, the diagnosis of differential doesn't hold water.
