Passat (B6) :: EPC Light Illuminated / Check Engine Blinked Now White Smoke When Trying To Start
Naturally, the dealer service close to me and my regular repair shop are both closed today, so my mind is racing. My check engine light came on a couple weeks ago and I have been waiting for my guy to get back for it's full 80+K workup/service. That was to be right away.
This morning on my 5 mile trip to work after my car sitting for a day, the check engine light came on as usual (with no seeming weird behavior) - but as I was going through some S-curves, the EPC light came on and it felt as if the engine was throttling down, not knowing how to shift, something.
I wasn't far from my parking lot so I drove on here, parked nose out and popped the hood. Nothing visible (not that there would be necessarily) but weird exhaust smell.
I just went back out after lunch and it cranked for a good 20+ seconds over three start attempts before it finally did. Tach went all low and jiggly before kicking in and revving steadily at 1K. However, white puffs of smoke began coming out the exhaust - weird smell (e.g., unburnt fuel perhaps...)
I'm only in a mild panic as I'll likely have to have this towed in and I don't have a clue what I'm facing. I get conflicting tales online as to what it might be but I'd love to impose on your brains if you have some insight to share. I've read about coil packs, throttle bodies, and more.
The only mechanical issue I've had with this engine was that I had the intake manifold assembly replaced right after my warranty went out. Had the throttle body cleaned then, too. Nothing since other than regular services according to vw standards.
Passat (B5) :: 2004 - White Smoke From Tailpipe / Coolant In Oil
I have a 2004 passat 1.8t which currently blows heavy white smoke from the tailpipe; coolant in oil and vise versa; when I open the oil fill cap / dipstick white smoke blows from there also. At first I thought it was the head gasket so I replaced it and resurfaced the head. What i noticed was burned oil on the sides inside the head. After putting everything together the smoke never quit blowing and after couple of hours the fluids mixed again. After reading the forums I took off the oil cooler and tested it by submerging it under water and hooking compressed air to the water lines -- no bubbles came out of the sides. Maybe I tested it wrong while the it is the oil cooler all along? Could it be cracked head? block?
View 6 RepliesPassat (B6) :: Volkswagen TDi Using More Coolant - White Smoke / Steam On Start Up
I have a volkswagen TDi 1.9 automatic which is using coolant more on short runs than on motorway and produces white smoke/steam on start up even when not cold which disappears after a few seconds. Other symptom is doesn't accelerate though goes OK when once up to speed. Have has cylinder head checked and new gasket so that is not the culprit and also new heat exchanger. There is also a gurgling noise which seems to be coming from the dash board though I am not sure if these things are related. I have read that the automatic has a water cooled EGR, could this be it??
View 1 RepliesFord Aerostar :: Coolant Leak From Front Engine Cover?
I replaced the water pump on my 3.0 and now, 9 months later, there is a coolant leak from the front engine cover (timing chain cover). The leak has probably been there two months or so, but it was so small initially, it was difficult to locate. A google search seems to indicate that a leak from the timing cover is somewhat common on the 3.0.
When I was doing the job, I noticed that some of the water pump bolts also hold the front cover in place, which seems like a bad design because removing those bolts takes some of the compression off of the timing cover gasket. Now that I have this leak, I'm wondering if changing the water pump is related to the leak. And, yes, I did use thread sealant on the bolts as recommended in the genuine Ford shop manual.
So now, I'm curious. Noticed a leak from the timing cover relatively soon after replacing the water pump on 3.0?
Grand AM :: 2001 GT - White Smoke / Coolant Leak And Engine Knock
I have an '01 Grand AM GT, 6 cyl 3400 engine.
It over heated about a week ago, coolant was low so I added more. Around that time I noticed white smoke/exhaust coming out as well. There was no odor to it so at first I thought nothing of it.
After a few days, the coolant reservoir was low again. On my way home one night I noticed an engine knock that sped up and slowed down with the RPM's but didnt get louder or quieter. Fortunately, the next day the Passlock system kicked in and I havent been able to start my car in a week.
I finally figured out the passlock issue (BCM was getting water in it from somewhere, cleaned off the connector pins and it started right up! found that fix somewhere on AF)
I changed the oil and the engine knock is still there. Now its a little more prominent and the engine was shaking tonight. Took out the spark plugs and they look and smell like they have oil on them. From what I've read so far it seems like it could be a valve cover gasket and/or the head gasket.
Passat (B5) :: Changed Coolant Expansion Tank And Engine Light Is On
Changed coolant expansion tank and coolant, engine lite came on. Scanner says coolant problems. What can it be. ECU is not recognizing new tank.
Car passat 1.8, M/T, 05, coolant was changed with the pink coolant from dealership, system was flushed and bleeded. Car is NOT overheating, temperature is showing as usual.

View 2 RepliesPassat (B6) :: Small Leak From Back Side Of Engine - Valve Cover
Today I did a oil change (70k). While under the car I notice a small leak from the back side of the engine. When I got home, I had the chance to remove the engine cover to investigate and clean the engine up a bit.
I found that the bolts in the rear of the valve cover had a little puddle of oil around them. I took a T-30 torque bit and was able to get a least a full turn on the rear bolts and about half turn on the middle ones. Fronts were about a quarter turn. Check your valve cover bolts.
Passat (B5) :: White Smoke Coming Out Of Hood When Engine Turned Off
I've got this weird problem , it started a month ago. Sometimes I would drive for half a hour, park the car, stop then engine and some white smoke comes out of the hood after a few seconds. But sometimes I can drive the same amount of time, park, stop the engine but no white smoke.
The only time I did notice it happening is when my temperature gauge isn't working properly , sometimes it will give the right reading (which is right on the middle) and while driving it will drop to 0. Also sometimes there is a smell of rubber burning I think (Doing my best here). But I've checked Google for people with my problem but all I read is either people with tail pipes issues or smoke directly in the drivers cabin. My white smoke is only when I kill the engine. There is no smoke coming out of the tail pipe nor in my cabin. Only a rubber burn kind of smell.
Touareg :: Compass Light Flickered From Dim To Bright And Back / Engine Cover
I noticed the second night driving our new Touareg that the compass light flickered from dim to bright and back. A few minutes after the display went completely off. Haven't noticed it since but I have seen a few posts that suggest they turn off after 30 sec. and can be adjusted with VagCom. I called VWoA and they had no info on it yet. The other issue was the engine cover that was on the demo Touareg with identical options other than the color, is not on our new vehicle. Our vehicle we bought was delivered the night of our demo ride, so it is a late build...small center rear head rest...etc. When I questioned the dealer they said the engine cover was discontinued recently and is not installed anymore. I wish it was there, looks clean. Other than that my second vehicle is an '04 Jeep Grand Cherokee and I love to drive the VW over the Jeep. They did an excellent job on it.
View 17 RepliesPassat (B5) :: Engine Code PO116 - Engine Coolant Temp CKT Range / Performance
I just had my 1998 Passat 1.8T with 97000 miles checked since the engine light came on. It started this afternoon and the car ran just fine. I took it to an Advance Auto and after they plugged in the OBD tool it came back with the code PO 116. Engine Coolant temp CKT Range/Performance.
The fellow decided to clear the code and then the car would not start. I waited for about 15 minutes and the car started with some hesitation and the light was out. When I got home I let the car sit for a few seconds and it started perfectly like nothing ever happened.
Does that mean that the temperature coolant sensor is bad??? I have a Hanes manual and apparently is not too difficult to do. Would I have to partially drain the radiator?
1999 S-10 Runs Like Crap / No Acceleration
I have a 1991 S-10 with 6 cylinders and 4.3 L. that isn't running too good at all. It is 2 wheel drive, and has an automatic trans. It cranks and starts, but dies out unless my foot is on the gas. It seems as if it wants to stay running once I have held the gas pedal down slightly for about ten minutes. When I put it into gear, and step on the gas, it slowly takes off, even if I have the pedal to the floor, and it doesn't go over about 15 m.p.h. Also, all of the gears seem to engage as I cycle from Park all the way through and back to Park again.
I have cleaned the EGR valve out. Put in a new Idle Air Control Valve. Changed the distributor cap and rotor. And my last attempt was changing the Coolant Temp. Sensor. None of these steps have even made the truck run a little better.
Escort :: 1997 - Coolant Dripping Under Timing Cover
Recently the timing belt went on my '97 Escort. It had been dripping coolant from somewhere under the timing cover so I bought the timing belt/water pump kit thinking that this would solve the two problems. It only solved one. I'm still dripping coolant from somewhere under the timing cover.
Are there any freeze plugs or things that would leak under the cover? When I had it all apart, there were no visible leaks at least on the upper end that I could see easily.
Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Coolant Leak From Behind Thermostat Cover So Soon?
02 Jetta 2.0L that I changed the thermostat. o-ring, and cover on when I first got the car about a year and a half ago.
I see dry g12 coming out from behind the cover and my coolant bulb had dipped quite a bit in recent weeks requiring a refill. What is most likely the problem here in such a short period of time? I've only put like 10k miles on the car in that period. O-ring couldn't have seated wrong because wouldn't the problem have been apparent immediately back when I did the job? Maybe I need to re-torque the cover? Cracked cover?
