Passat (B5) :: 1999 - Clutch Does Not Engage
I traded for a 99 passat 1.8t aeb based on the assumption the slave cylinder was out. My 3rd b5 5 speed. Kid told me clutch pedal had no pressure and fell to floor.easy fix! Get the car to my house from 2 hours away and this is not the case.Pedal is fine. Decent clutch pedal starts with clutch pushed in. But clutch does not engage. Even when motor off or on goes into all gears without clutch pushed in. no engagement. So I put in new slave and bleed out.
Car no longer stuck in neutral shifts fine. Put in reverse barely crawls but is MOVING! Put into first and start to pull forward..stops moving. No clunks or booms just back to ALL neutral. starts with clutch but wont engage. So try bleeding again nothing.. I think it is the clutch but i dont want to spend 1400 if i dont have to though the car is worth it. Going to replace dual mass as well. The cv joints are fine. so thinking throw out or pressure plate. i work on this car like crazy but im definitely not going to do the clutch. Not enough time or a warm dry location. I haven't checked clutch master yet but with slave bleeding out,no leaks and a firm pedal i dont believe she is the culprit..
Passat (B5) :: 1999 - Clutch Seems To Catch Really High

99 AC compressor clutch pulley locked up. I replaced the serp belt because it failed, then noticed the AC outer pulley was locked up. I could turn the inner clutch assembly with the 14 mm nut with no problem. So do I need to replace compressor, or can clutch assembly. be repaired on car?
View 4 RepliesPassat (B5) :: 1999 - Clutch Pedal Would Not Come Up Off The Floor / Stuck
Facts: 1999 Vw passat 1.8t
1 year ago, clutch pedal would not come up off the floor, no life in the pedal.
Problem: Clutch master cylinder, replaced.
6 months ago, clutch finally went bad. Took car to clutch shop, replaced clutch kit(found out after i payed that they only turned the dual-mass flywheel... ). Get car from clutch shop, the clutch pedal came up only 2-3 inches off the floor by itself but you could lift the pedal with your hand or foot, and it would come back up all the way, but it was life-less. It was not pulling fluid in. It was catching extremely low. I called the shop, they said that it was just because it was a new clutch and it would get better. I didn't believe them.
Two days ago, I got into my car and couldn't get it into gear. Clutch pedal would go down with the same amount of force as before. Took it back to the clutch shop and explained the history with the clutch master and then them doing the clutch kit. They said it wasn't bleeding properly and they're not sure if its going to have problems again. Car is working now, but I am concerned that it will have similar problems again.
The tech who fixed it said he pumped fluid into it extremely hard, and that's what made the pedal come up all the way (no longer stops 2 inches off the floor) and its going into gear just fine now. What the problem might have been? Block in the hydraulic lines? If this is the case, does forcing fluid through it fix it?
Passat - Volkswagen :: 1999 - Clutch Pedal Went All The Way To The Floor
My clutch pedal went all the way to the floor. The engine was missing first and then that problem happened with the clutch. I had the car towed to my business, I checked it the other day and the pedal was up. The clutch still doesn't engage.
View 6 RepliesPassat (B5) :: Could Clutch Be Adjusted?
When I bought my 2004 Passat three months ago, I was told that the clutch was brand new. Lately when I take a corner in second gear, I get a "whole car seizure" if I am hitting the gas a little hard while not letting up the clutch enough. I've never had this happen before in ANY of the other standards I have owned / driven.

I have a 02 passat 1.8t 5sp so my question is does clutch catch all the way at the top. this doesn't seem right to me because my brother has had a jetta and the new mk5 gti and they both catch low.
View 1 RepliesPassat (B5) :: The Clutch Starts Malfunctioning
My Mom's 1998 Passat 1.8T has 340,000 miles on it. I was unaware of it until today, but apparently when it reaches around 97 degrees the clutch starts malfunctioning. She says the pedal will go to the floor and the clutch stops working. My Step-father does not think the clutch itself has ever been replaced. Sometimes she even has to pull it back up with her foot. I'm not well versed on this model as I'm primarily an A-1 guy.

I got a 98 passsat and my clutch was recently replaced.... my car doesn't start but my battery and starter are good... it must be something with the clutch that the mechanic left out... i have to push start the car every morning and its hard to just even get it out of the driveway and onto the street by myself.... is there any way to turn off the clutch sensor so i don't have 2 clutch in for the engine to turn over....
View 1 RepliesPassat (B5) :: Clutch Stopped Working
So I was on a road trip pretty far away from home on some winding roads in the mountains enjoying a new chip I put in my 1.8t and when I down shifted to 2nd, my car all of a sudden felt as if I went into neutral, needless to say, I wasn't, my clutch just stopped working. I can shift through all the gears, and nothing grabs, not even slightly, I don't hear any grinding or anything. It's just as if I'm in neutral. My clutch was pretty worn to start with, I've got 130,000 on an original clutch I just never had a clutch got out on me like that.
View 6 RepliesPassat (B5) :: Clutch Pedal Won't Return By Itself
My B5's clutch started not returning by itself when the really cold weather started. When it gets warmer it starts to spring back up. I called the dealership and the initial cost of looking at it takes me somewhat aback. I've already spent quite a bit on it last year. Reading some of the threads on other car models I've seen mention of clutch master/slave and fluids.
View 10 RepliesPassat (B5) :: 2001 - How To Replace Clutch
Need to replace the clutch on my wife's 2001 AWM. Its for her, no mod's, driven daily to work etc. I just want a stock style replacement that will last as long as the original (165k). Should I go with the stock replacement from Sachs or go with one of the Valeo style dual mass conversions? Does my car even have a dual mass? Can the OEM flywheels be resurfaced/turned?
View 1 RepliesPassat (B6) :: Clutch Shudders Sometimes When Cold
I have a 1996 VW Passat TDI which has a 5 speed stick (they all did). Yes, it's really old but it runs great and gets 45 mpg. However, the model is probably not relevant to this problem. My question has to do with clutch performance. When the car is cold (and it's cold outside), the car sometimes shudders starting out in first gear for a couple minutes. I have tried to be extra careful letting out the clutch in these circumstances. Sometimes that works, but it doesn't eliminate the problem. After about 5 minutes or so the clutch starts working well as it usually does.

View 1 RepliesPassat (B5) :: 1996 - Clutch Won't Engaging?
My clutch is not disengaging when i push in the clutch pedal. I have good clutch pressure, I have to basically rpm shift my way through the gears. Is a dead slave cylinder the most likely culprit for this? if so is there any special information i need to know when it comes to bleeding out the new one?

View 2 RepliesPassat (B7) :: Beep Sound After Clutch Has Been Released
It happened again this morning while putting the tranny into reverse and backing into my slanted/graded driveway about 60'. After the clutch has been released all of the way, a BEEP...BEEP...BEEP. aural sound comes from either the engine bay or under the dash. It's not happening when driving out fresh in the morning. It only occurred when I was backing up and on a grade. First, I had thought that it was my clutch telling me - Or, maybe it was the Hill Assist actuator in conflict when the car is actually moving. No smoke or burning coming from underneath nor any idiot lights flashing on the Dash.
I left a message for the Service Manager at the VW Dealer that I purchased the car from. I haven't heard back yet if he has ever heard of or witnessed this freak of nature event. Today was the second time in a week that this "Anomaly" has occurred.
Passat (B5) :: Clutch Grinds For 2 Seconds When Upshifting
I drive a 04 passat 5spd with 100k on it. Anyway, the clutch grabs fine, doesn't slip out of gear and slips right in. SOMETIMES when I shift it grinds for like .2 seconds and the goes away, and it drives normal. It ONLY does this when upshifting, downshifting it has never happened. It pulls fine, 4th gear up a hill it still gains. Do you think a tranny flush would cure this little issue? Or Is my clutch now terminal.
View 1 RepliesPassat (B5) :: Engine Not Revving When Letting Clutch Out
Pretty nice condition 2003 1.8t Passat 5 speed yesterday with 45k miles. nice price, mint interior, only a few minor blemishes on the bumpers.
Anyways, I was noticing that the gas pedal needs to be pushed in about half half before the car wants to move. I do not believe it was the clutch going bad as the engine wasn't revving when i was letting the clutch out, it just didn't seem to move until the gas pedal was half way down. again, no clutch slippage, engine was not revving.
