Lexus GX 2010+ :: 2014 - Engine Sounds Louder And Rougher Than Usual
I recently started noticing that my engine sounds louder and rougher than usual. I have a 2014 GX with about 25K on it. I get about 800-900rpm on idle and about 1800-1900 when cruising 70-75 mph.
Engine sounding louder all of a sudden. No "check engine" sign pops up. I also took the car to the dealer and mechanic rode with me on surface streets and of course , everything looked normal to him.
Golf IV / Jetta IV :: 2003 - Won't Start Smoothly When Hot
Having trouble starting my car after getting gas on a low tank. It had appeared to me this was the only time and maybe it was at the time but now I've noticed it happens whenever I turn the car off after its warmed up and been driven and have it left off for several minutes and try to restart it. If I just turn it off and try to turn it back on immediately it will start fine, or if it is left off for 10 minutes or more it will be fine to start back up. It always starts when cold. The jetta is a 2003 1.8t manual transmission, I always let it idle for a short period after driving, longer if driven hard before shutting down. It was suggested to replace the evap purge valve which I did and it has not fixed the issue. Another piece I have replaced recently is the crankshaft position sensor which was to resolve a random stalling problem.

This is my first VW. My first European car at all. I've been having what I think are battery issues, but they're weird. Every... I'd say 3rd or 4th start, I just get the clickclickclickclickclick thing. Then I jump it and it starts fine. When I don't have to jump it, it's been starting rough. When I jump it is the only time it starts smoothly. To me that screams battery.
The other day, I went to start it and it wouldn't start. But I had nothing to do that day so I went back inside and did whatever. Went out about 5 hours later, and it started just fine.
Golf IV / Jetta IV :: 2003 - Louder Than Normal Engine Noise
I have an 03 GTI, and recently the engine has been very loud at speeds over 25mph. There isn't any rattling, ticking or chugging sounds. It just sounds like my rpm is at 7000, when it's actually 2000.
I'll try to upload a video tonight of driving around.
Honda - Fit :: 2009 - Engine Sounds Louder At Idle

I have owned car for 2 months.
Last few weeks the engine sounds louder at idle and there some vibration. The passenger side wiper arm vibrates due to engine vibration.
Prius (2004-09) :: 2006 - Louder Than Usual When The Motor Is Running
My 06 Prius seems to be a little louder than usual when the motor is running. What could be going on? Just had the hybrid battery, water pump and belt replaced, but it still seems to be making the same noise.
View 2 RepliesGolf IV / Jetta IV :: 1.8t Sounds Like A Diesel / Gas Smell In Engine Bay
My 2005 gti 1.8t started sounding weird a few days ago, it has a really deeper tone to it, sounds like a truck or a diesel. I can also smell gas in the engine bay, car seems like it runs fine just sounds really funky. Sound gets louder as I accelerate.
Here what it t sounds like right now. Sound is coming from top of the motor or behind it near downpipe, not beneath the car from exhaust.

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Clicking Sounds Coming From The Engine Bay
The issue I'm having, as stated is a no start issue. Its completely random and has no pattern. Here is the issue.
When the issue occurs, you will go to start the car to only have it click at you. No crank, no nothing. The click sounds like it comes from the engine bay but has not been confirmed. If you turn the key without the clutch in, putting the clutch in will make the click sound.
Thinking it was the ignition switch, I replaced it with a unit from advance auto. The issue occurred again shortly after so I pulled it out and put the old one back in. Then I replaced the starter. That didn't do it either.
It hasn't done it in a while so I kind of forgot about it but its started doing it again. Time to fix it.
Picture of the car for your viewing pleasure of displeasure...
Golf IV / Jetta IV :: 2001 - Won't Shift Smoothly
I have a 2001 Jetta 1.8t. O2j trans obviously. It shifts not so smothly in any gear but stays in all gears fine. When the car is up to temp and the trans is warm it grinds going into second. It's ONLY when the car is warm. Shifts perfectly fine before that. And it's only when I shift from first into second. I can go from third to second just fine and I can pull out of first put into third without letting go of clutch and put it into second without a grind. I've changed the oil to Lucus oil 70w/90 gl-4 rated and there was absolutely no change.
View 1 RepliesGolf IV / Jetta IV :: Engine Sounds Like Its Working Overtime / Car Stalls
I drive a 2003 Golf 2.0 manual. I've had this problem happen to me four times in my year-and-a-half of ownership -- once about three months ago and three times today.
Whether at highway or city speeds (60+ MPH or 30 MPH, respectively), power to the accelerator cuts out without warning. The engine briefly sounds like it's working overtime (but it could just be my foot on the accelerator pedal) and the tachometer needle struggles to stay at the RPMs. In a matter of seconds, the engine stalls and the needle gradually starts to fall. I can't tell you how dangerous of a situation this is to be in: 65 MPH on the highway with vehicles all around you, your car chokes, and you're losing speed.
The first time this happened to me three months ago, I had to hit my emergency lights and pull over to the highway shoulder. Turning the ignition off, then on, and attempting to start the car didn't work. I thought I was in trouble. Then I removed the key and tried it again. It was successful. I got to my destination (my parent's home) and they recommended I go see their regular mechanic for an inspection. He told me that the problem could be low fuel in the tank, as I did at the time. When the car's fuel tank is at a certain angle, the fuel pump doesn't pump fuel properly, messing up the whole combustion, and causing the car to stall. This explanation fit the situation I was in perfectly, as the fuel indicator had just come on when it occurred.
Today, the fuel indicator was just above the last 1/8 -- no fuel warning light -- and the car stalls three times (once on the highway to work, once on the highway home with no shoulders to pull over, and once on city road). I had prior experience about this and drive a manual, so I have attempted each time today to re-start the car while at speed. It was a scary situation the second time today: 9:30pm, dark, modest amount of cars on the road, on a twisty highway with no shoulders (California Highway 110 between Downtown and Pasadena) where each time you turn the ignition off, the headlights go out, the steering wheel goes stiff, and you're decelerating. Fortunately, I dropped only 25 MPH to 40 when I got the car running again when I remembered to remove the key first before re-starting.
Needless to say, rather than wait two days to get cheap gas at Costco (b/c I work tomorrow as well), I went to the 76 near my home and filled her up . Hopefully, this situation will not happen again, as I will be a lot more diligent about keeping gas in my tank.
Jetta - Volkswagen :: 2004 - Won't Start Smoothly - Would Crank But Not Fires Up
I have a 2004 Jetta TDI Stationwagon. In January it started having starting problems. The car would crank but not fire. After about 8-9 tries it would fire. MOstly does it first crank of the day (whether morning or afternoon).
Mechanic #1 said it was the fuel filter and changed it. But it still had starting problems. Then Mechanic #1 said it was a sensor and changed it. Still had starting problems. In February, Mechanic #2 said it was the fuel pump. Changed the fuel pump. Still had starting problems.
Then Mechanic #2 said it was the crank sensor. But when he checked the crank sensor was brand new (apparently Mech #1 changed it in January). Still had same starting problems.
Mechanic #3 said he received the Crank sensor diagnostic error too but he checked it and it was brand new! He told me to take it to the dealer. I did. Dealer said no it wasn't the crank sensor it was the new fuel pump installed in April was defective. Took off the brand new fuel pump that was installed another brand new fuel pump. Next day car started fine but two days later didn't start again. Took car back to the dealer. They said after all it wasn't the fuel pump it was the crank sensor. After a couple days they said it wasn't the crank sensor but it was the EGR valve that was clogged with carbon. They changed the EGR valve, cleaned it out and gave the car back to me.
Today the car doesn't start again! I tried it about 7 times! Dealer is going to haul it back and try to figure it out! But I am frustrated! What could it be?
Golf IV / Jetta IV :: ABS And Traction Control Lights Come On Along With Usual CEL For Bad O2 Sensor
So recently (yesterday and today) when driving I've noticed that my ABS and traction control lights come on along with the usual CEL for a bad 02 sensor, what could be causing these to come on, the part that throws me off is that it only happens when it is wet outside or if I run through a puddle...

View 8 RepliesGolf IV / Jetta IV :: Louder GLX Noise At 1500 RPM
Just to give a quick background, I recently had a transmission issue which I'm still getting sorted out. Mech is ordering me a re-manned valve body. Was getting codes on all solenoids. This was after having the trans go into limp mode. I don't know if this noise has something to do with that or not though I doubt it. I have the youtube link below with the actual sound. I sat the phone on the windshield with the hood popped so the sound is pretty loud. It's not nearly as noticeable inside the car. In fact I've never noticed it before so it may have been there all along or it just recently happened. As you can hear, right at about 1500rpm is the noise. Once I get above or below that the noise reduces. I also have another softer rattle sound at about 2300 RPM or so which I'm 95% sure is the shifter rod brushing which I plan to replace soon, that one is louder when it's cold or the engine is pulling hard uphill or something. But I'm mainly worried about the louder noise at 1500rpm.
What does this sound like it could be?
As much as this transmission stuff is costing to sort out, the last thing I need is another expensive repair.
2001 with about 116,500 miles.
Golf IV / Jetta IV :: How To Modify Exhaust To Be Louder
So I acquired a 2003 1.8t GTi a little bit ago and i'm loving it, but I want it to be louder and more aggressive. With that being said I've already searched the forums but could not find anything for my specific case. I bought the car with a 3 inch downpipe and Borla muffler installed so I would like to know what way I can modify the exhaust to be louder while keeping these components in tact!
View 8 RepliesJeep - Liberty :: Engine Misfiring When First Start Out And Then Runs Smoothly
My engine seems to misfire when I first start out and then runs smoothly. The first mechanic got a random misfire from the diagnostic and replaced all the cylinder coils which worked for about a week. The second mechanic ran a diagnostic which said random misfire and he said it was a loose spark plug. This worked for 4 days then it started misfiring again. There's no violent shaking or backfiring. I don't know much about cars but it seems odd that it doesn't keep misfiring. It's a 2006 jeep Liberty with 87,000 miles...
View 9 RepliesGolf V R32 :: Engine Unexpectedly Died - Not Running Smoothly
Today, while about to take off after stopping at a traffic light my engine unexpectedly died. I noticed that the "red battery warning signal" (something to do with the electrical systems) lit up at this time.
I restarted the engine without trouble but since then I have noticed that the car feels a bit more jerky to drive and is not as stable at idle.
Upon leaving the car, I also noticed a burning smell coming from somewhere in the rear. The weather here is fairly cool so I would rule out high temperatures as the cause of the problem.
I have read the lengthy thread below about people having hiccup issues with their R, but I think it is time to start a new one as that is very confusing and still inconclusive.
From what I have read, there seem to be two possible problems to why engines unexpectedly die or hiccup. 1. Faulty stock ECU, or 2. Faulty fuel pump and canister, or both.
I'd like to know whether people who have similar experiences, who have since
A) reflashed their ECU with an aftermarket one, or
B) installed a new fuel tank/pump from VW - have solved this problem.
My R only has 100 miles on it, and it is very disappointing to know that it is not running as it should.
Nissan - Pathfinder :: 1999 - Won't Start Smoothly - Engine Fired Very Little And Then Knocked Off
When cold engine starts on the first attemp 80% of the time, when warm its about 60-70%. Sometimes it take 2-3 attemps to start. But on the second to last attemp the engine will fire very little and then knock off.
So far I replaced the distributor, spark plugs and wires, boost sensor?, fuel pressure regulator, and checked the injector ohms and fuel pressure at the engine with the old pump. After replacing the fuel filter it started fine for a few days, after replacing the fuel pump it started fine for a week. Thus making me believe it's a fuel issue. So I added check valves to the fuel line at the engine, both the supply and return lines. And still few days later it's back.
Golf IV / Jetta IV :: GTI 1.8T Turbo Has Louder Whining Noise When Accelerate
I noticed last night that my cars turbo had a much louder whining noise when I accelerate. There is no blow off, doesn't sound like much air coming in and also there is not very much boost being put out at all. I've come to think that it may be a loose seal or gasket along the way but I'm sure hoping it isn't a pooched turbo... I don't have a boost gauge so checking boost pressure isn't an option right now. Just noticed from putting foot down but no boost.
