Geo - Metro :: 1996 - Popping 15 Amp Ignition Fuse Randomly?
My 96 Metro for some reason is popping the 15 amp ignition fuse randomly. First time it happened I disconnected the alternator and replaced the fuse and it got me home. Pulled the alternator and had it tested and it tested fine. Put it back in and everything worked for about a month. It popped the fuse again while driving down the road. I disconnected the alternator again but this time the fuse still blew. I disconnected the coil replaced the fuse turned on the key and the fuse did not pop. I reconnected everything and it worked fine. Hasn't repeated itself in a week. I think there is a short somewhere. Just can't find it.
View 1 RepliesGolf IV R32 :: When Idling With AC On Car Seems To Shut Off Randomly
When my car is idling(usually with the A/C on) my car seems to shut off randomly. There is a hissing noise that comes right below the cluster or by the ignition. Stepping on the gas will make the noise go away but will come back when idling. There has been times when I have turned off my car by just rolling down the windows. Usually when I lock the car with the remote, the horn sounds really low and weak. There are also times when my passenger door does not unlock with the key remote.
I have no aftermarket electronics installed in my car but just a usp test pipe. I have scanned for codes and this is what I got:
P0430-Catalytic Converter System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 2)
P0420-Catalytic Converter System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)
I am assuming these codes have nothing to do with the type of short I have but the usp I have installed.
Here is a video: [URL] ....
I DID NOT turn off the car. It shut off by itself.
Golf IV R32 :: When Hit The Gas Car Will Choke And Randomly Shut Off
Ok, so every now and then when I turn my car on it will feel as though it's not getting enough power, and will make a sound like "prum prum prum prum", and then if I touch the gas it will choke and shut off. If I try starting it again it won't even start, I'd have to wait 3-8 minutes or so and try starting it and when it does start, I give it some gas, rev it to maybe 3-4k rpm, and it will be A-OK and drive with no problems. Now this doesnt happen every day. I may use my car 4-6 times in one day and it will start no problem. The next day I try using it, it will do "its thing" and will not start.
Now, when it does "its thing" my ESP light or traction control light goes off and the light stays until I start it again but even if I try turning it off with the ESP switch it doesn't work. I'm guessing the problem could be either the fuel pump, fuel filter, or alternator but I'm not exactly a mechanic, nor do I know a load about cars either.
Finally got the codes all 9 of them :
p0491
p0492
p2401
p0057
p0037
p0031
p0051
p0141

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Springy Popping While Backing Up
Diagnosing a possible front suspension issue.
While backing up, I felt a springy popping in my car. I ignored it attributing it to just the freezing temps and kept on driving. After a few miles I felt something got loose and started rattling, but it went away after a few seconds. Maybe a nut got loose and dropped from the car? Anyway, the rattling is gone but during slow turns, I still feel popping or pinging. I don't feel this when driving at highway speeds.
Can it be the strut bearing mount broke ( see pics below)? Looks like the driver side collapsed? Would that explain the sound of something getting loose, that the mount actually broke?
Driver side
Passenger side
Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Popping Noise When Turning Right?
For the last few thousand miles my 99.5 jetta has been making a popping noise (many pops, not just one) only when turning right under acceleration. (No noise when coasting or decelerating in gear and turning right, no noise under any circumstances). no pulsing in the brakes, and the car appears aligned well as it tracks nicely.
The noise is rotational, the faster you go, the faster the pops happen (again, it will make many popping noises, not just one). Probably once per revolution on the tires, not entirely sure. And it is, with as much certainty as i can have, coming from the front passenger side of the car.
I took it into the mechanic twice, first time they couldn't hear it and sent it back. Second time they said it was likely the CV joint so replaced both on the passenger side.
I have to admit that I didnt notice the noise for about 300 miled after that service, and I did try to get it ot happen. but its back now.
All boots and ball joints look ok and no grease has slung out. I am thinking it might be a wheel bearing at the extremely early stages of going.
Right now i am on a "wait and see if it gets worse " course. For the last 1500 or so miles it has not seemed to have changed.
Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Infrequent Popping Noise At Idle
I can't figure out what this popping noise is that is coming from under the car (towards the back, not from engine). Its infrequent and I only notice it at idle. If I had to guess it would be exhaust related, but that still doesn't sound right. What could it be? See the video below for the sound I am talking about.
View 2 RepliesGolf IV / Jetta IV :: Popping Slightly At Idle Occasionally
So I just noticed now that my car is popping slightly at idle occasionally...It doesn't do it all the time and the idle is kinda lumpy but always holds at 800-900. Sometimes it drops a bit lower.
Also when starting it up in the morning, or when the engine is cold it doesnt rev up to 1500rpms it just starts and immediately drops to 800-900??
When I press on the gas and keep the pedal at one spot, say 2000rpms, it slowly drops down to 1500??
Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Front Passengers Side Strut Popping
I just got a H&R Sport Cup Kit installed along with new strut mounts and bearings on my 2001 GTi. My front right side strut is making a popping sound whenever I accelerate or brake slightly hard and sometimes when hitting a bump in the road. What's causing the sound? Could it be I have a bad strut? Also the left side is fine and doesn't make noise at all..
View 10 RepliesGolf IV / Jetta IV :: Popping / Knocking Noise Coming From Suspension
2001 vr6 manual... I have a popping noise that comes from my suspension. it is in the front, and it has gradually gotten worse over the last month or so. It used to happen when i back out of my drive way only, but now it happens when accelerating from a stop, quickly braking or turning at low speeds. Recently its getting worse and i can start to feel it in my steering wheel sometimes. It doesn't feel like a wheel bearing. Is it bushings? Tie rod? CV Joints? Strut Mount?
View 2 RepliesGolf IV / Jetta IV :: Fuse Box Above Battery Melting
On my MKIV Jetta the wire going to S177 is getting super hot an melting my fuse box, an I am talking from the time I start my car to pop my hood the fuse box cover will burn your hand. I used a voltage meter an it reads 14v but the wire running from the fuse box to the alt gets super hot, an it only gets hot on the side of the fuse box. Could it be a bad alt?

View 1 RepliesGolf IV / Jetta IV :: No Brake Lights / Fuse Is Okay
I have a 2002 Jetta Wagon 1.8 t I got pulled over the other day for no brake lights, and I figured it was just a fuse, but I had a look and it isn't that. the middle light thing in the top of the window comes on, so I know the switch works. (is is mechanical on the pedal, or hydraulic pressure?) Both taillights come on, but neither brake light. What's going on here?
View 11 RepliesGolf IV / Jetta IV :: Fuse Box Burnt On Top Of Battery
My daughter's 2004 Jetta GL 2.0L has had a second occurrence where the fuse box on top of battery gets melted and damages fuse & wires. Last time I had the whole box, Alternator wire, fuses replaced and now it happens again. What's causing this to happen? I have read a few searched threads on this problem, but now one has stated a cure to this problem. Only suggestions to change the parts. This second occurrence has caused a slew of electrical problems and CEL's to pop up. including ABS, cooling/fan & a/c problems.
View 4 RepliesGolf IV / Jetta IV :: Popping Noise When Turn Steering Wheel While Car Parked
Ok a week ago i noticed a popping noise when i would turn my steering wheel while the car was parked. It sounded and felt like it was coming from the drivers side.
Now a week later i have a weird constant whirring/growling noise coming from the drivers side wheel area. Which only stops when I stop completely or take a right hand turn.
So I think its a wheel bearing due to the fact it stops when I turn right, but thats why im here im not totally sure.
Golf IV / Jetta IV :: 2003 GTI VR6 - Door Hinge Creaking / Popping Noise
Got a 03 GTI VR6 and my drivers door kept on making this creaking/popping noise(it is very similar to the creaking noise of a old wooden door or the sound you hear in horror movies but for a lot shorter duration). The sound seems to come up when I accelerate, break take off from a complete stop. I took the car into the dealership and they torqed some bolt on the hinge and the creaking went away. Not a month later the passenger door develops the same creaking. The dealer tries to torqe the bolt on the hinge again and they say it cant be done and that their body shop needs to replace the hinge. They paint a hinge for me and put it on but don't get the door adjustments right so I get a lot of wind noise. Finally they adjust the door right and all is well.
A while later the drivers door starts creaking again! I went to another dealership and did an oil change while I was away on a trip to Toronto and the service technician said he could lubricate the door gasket and that this will take the creaking away. So he did. Now granted that has taken the creaking away but after some rain and 2 car washes the creaking came back in full swing.
I call the dealership to set up an appointment and they refuse to look at the door saying that as far as they are concerned the vehicle is up to manufacturers specs and that they will need to get a VW rep to look at it. In the mean time I call the vw customer care which tells me that they contacted the dealer and that the dealer beleves that the car is up to manufacturers specifications and that the noise I am hearing is normal and that all the cars have this noise.
Now I owned an 02 Golf GL 2dr and never heard that sound. It's been a month and a half and neither the dealer or vw customer care have called to inform me when the VW area rep. will be coming to have a look at the issue. It looks like I hit a dead end with having my issue acknowledged and looked at. Is this really a standard noise on the mk4 2dr platforms ? How I should pursue this issue ?!? Anything ?!
Golf IV / Jetta IV :: 2004 GTI - Popping Noise From Underside Like Muffler Came Loose
I was driving home and suddenly the underside of my car *popped* and it sounded like my muffler came loose. Very loud exhaust/turbo whistle.
Luckily I was very close to home and was able to pull in when it completely fell off and started dragging on the street. What part of my exhaust is this and what should I do to repair it?
I just finished fixing a ton of stuff on her and now she does this ?
Golf IV / Jetta IV :: A/C Blowing Hot Air Randomly
I have a MKIV R32 and the other day I was driving with the A/C on, blowing cold air when randomly the air turned hot and hasn't blown cold yet. I took a look at the refrigerant levels today and they show a full charge along with the low-side refrigerant tube to the compressor getting cold but no still no luck.
The compressor is on so I don't think that's at fault, what else could there be? Something electrical maybe?
Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Brake Lights Are Out - Fuse Keeps Blowing
First of all, its not a faulty brake light switch. I just found out that my rear brake lights have been out. I went to check the fuse and it was blown. I've replaced it but the second i touch the brake pedal, it pops again. Things I've tried...
I checked the wiring for any exposed wiring and i didn't find anything.
I disconnected the entire light assembly from the connectors on both sides and the fuse still blew.
I'm suspecting a bad ground, (as there was a point when the lights would work, even when i touched the pedal, but as soon as i pop the trunk open, the fuse would blow.
Where the lights are grounded? Is there anything else i should check?
