Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: 2005 - Hard Starting In Cold Weather
How to diagnose what I think is a failing alternator?
Here are the symptoms:
- Hard starting in cold weather
- Battery not at full voltage when truck is parked (usually around 11.5-12 volts. I have been putting a charger on it some nights)
- Lights seem to dim when I've got accessories running, like heater fan, heated seats etc. Lights get brighter with engine RPM, like when pulling away from an intersection.
What's my next step to diagnose this? I did a search, and didn't see anything. My battery is probably still under warranty, so if that's the issue, it should be a free fix. How hard is it to install an alternator in a 2005 with 5.4L engine?
Golf IV / Jetta IV :: 1998 - Won't Start In Humid Weather
My daughter bought BIL's jetta and loves it. Already had to replace the seal on the oil cooler which wasn't too bad to do. But now she's out of town with the car and it won't start. Said it did start and run for a bit, long enough to get half way down the driveway and then die. Won't start again for her. Called BIL and he said it had done that to his daughter also during high humidity times. Well we have been foggy all day, guess that counts for high humidity .Could this malady be from condensation under the cap or is it something more sinister?
View 4 RepliesGolf IV / Jetta IV :: Engine Light On When Weather Is Hot / Off In Cold And Humid
1999.5 Jetta 2.0 Lit, engine 186000 miles, bough it few months ago and this issue is driving me crazy.
Engine Light "ON" and "OFF" depending on weather conditions.
On my , No Engine Light in Cold and humid weather. When weather is hot the light goes ON.
I was thinking on changing the O2 sensor(the one after the catalytic) I do not know if this will solve my problem,
I will like to change the oil, it is using regular 10/30 SAE what grade and kind will be suggested?.
Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Mk4 Running Choppy And CEL Is Flashing In Cold And Foggy Weather
Just bought my 2004 Jetta GLS from a dealership last week. 2.0 Engine. Has 140K miles on it. 2 hour drive from the dealership to home was cold and foggy but it ran fine. In town stop and go traffic in foggy conditions since last Thursday and it has run fine. Got a downpour this morning and all of a sudden it is running choppy and the CEL is flashing at me.
I have a 96 MK3 as well that would run badly in the rain until I changed out the Electronic Coil. Got so I would carry spares with me.
Is it the same fix for the MK4 2.0? I've also read about using epoxy or JB Weld to coat the coils and keep the water out. Does that work for the MK4 Ignition coil?
Golf IV / Jetta IV :: 2003 - Tires Making More Noise In The Warm Weather?
My car has 130k miles and has recently developed a worrying noise. It makes an extra whirring sound, like another set of gears spinning, but I don't think I would describe it as a grinding noise. I live in VT and I thought maybe it was my (studless) snow tires making more noise in the warm weather because I noticed it about a month and a half ago when it warmed up. Now that I have my all season tires on, it's still making the noise. The tire guys didn't notice anything wrong when the swap happened (but they only do tires there and I didn't ask them to look for anything).
As far as I can tell it is dependent on wheel speed, not engine speed. It starts at about 20-25mph and gets louder the faster I go. At about 65 the normal road noise is louder than the new noise. If I turn the wheel to the right to any degree the noise goes away. I can't tell if it is completely gone, but it seems like it is. There is no real change if I turn the wheel to the left, though it might get slightly worse. When the noise is going I can feel a vibration in the floorboard that matches the sound. The sound seems like it is coming from in front of me, but I can't really tell if it is left, right, or center. As far as I can tell that is the only new noise, no clicking/griding when I turn the wheel etc.
I'm taking it in for normal 130k maintenance in a week....
Golf IV / Jetta IV :: 1.8T 2004 Automatic - Shifter Hard To Move In Cold Weather
I've got a 1.8T 2004 automatic and the problem I'm having is the shifter is harder to move since the weather's been colder. It shifts very well and is responsive, it's just that I have to pull it harder to select P, R, N and D. D is especially hard (no pun intended you sick minds! ) to select, the shifter kind of stays in neutral but shifts after a bit. Is there anything I can do to fix this?
Side question: is the rear defrost supposed to turn off after a certain period of time? My 2002 golf does it but the jetta doesn't.
Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Starting To Release Bad Smell?
Recently I noticed that my car (Golf IV TDI 90) starts to release a bad smell from air vents driver side, but it's not all the time knowing that the air conditioning and the ventilation are disabled. odor similar to the first odor released during the activation of the ventilation to disengage the first odor.
for your information, i have already changed the pollen filter withe a new one.
Passat (B6) :: Not Starting In Hot Weather?
Passat 3.6 ... The 4Mo has been out in AZ for about 8 months now. After leaving it in a garage for two months when i flew back home, i came back to find the battery completely dead. It was periodically started but one day my cousin told me it didn't even unlock anymore.
Battery died and was replaced with a "hot weather" one. AAA guy laughed when he saw my plates and checked the battery to find it was a "cold weather" one that wouldn't stand a chance stagnant in the heat.
Coming out of class yesterday where it was HOT and sunny all day, my car didn't start. After giving it another try and some gas, it finally turned over and started. This happened before on my old battery once too, very rare, but it sketches me out that it happens at all.
Could this be a problem with the starter or just hot weather? I don't remember this happening in NJ, but an upcoming road trip makes me wanna know what I am working with.
Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Loud Whistling Noise Right After Starting
My car has started making this loud whistling noise. It only happens when right after starting it when it's sat for a few hours and fades out within 30 seconds but has lasted for a couple minutes before. It drives fine but I know the sound isn't normal. Here's a video of the noise: [URL] ....
View 1 RepliesGolf IV / Jetta IV :: 1.8 Not Starting On First Couple Tries When Sits For More Than 24hrs
I'm driving a 03 1.8 jetta with no mods. Whenever my Jetta sits for more than 24hrs, I have a hard time starting it. It turns over just fine but sputters to a stall once it fires. I do this 3 times before it revs high and stabilizes.
I changed out the coil packs, fuel filter and spark plugs. I can hear the fuel pump prime before starting so I assume that is working fine.
I dont notice any issues while driving either. Its just the start up. It particularly acts up in cooler temps and higher humidity (raining days too).
Golf IV / Jetta IV :: 2003 - Not Starting Easily Only After Refueling
I've got a 2003 Jetta GLS 2.0L 5 speed that i bought a few months ago. It's a great car but there is one issue...whenever i fill up at the pump it will not start for quite some time. In order to get it to run I have to pump the throttle while turning it over. Once it starts it runs like crap for a bit but it does smooth out. This isn't a huge deal only cause I only put gas in it once a week but at the same time it's annoying. The check engine light was not on at first but after a week or two it came on. I cannot remember the code off hand but it was for a Massive EVAP leak??
View 5 RepliesGolf IV / Jetta IV :: 2001 - Long Starting And Turbo Not Working
My stereo fuse had blown off and while trying to find it, i removed all the fuses one by one to see which one was blown. I found the fuse, changed it, stereo was back to life. Only problem is that right before removing the fuses the car was driving normal. After checking the fuses the car seems to take longer to start; starter keeps turning for twice the time it did before. Also it seems as if the turbo is not even there. Btw the car is a golf mk4 tdi 150 bhp 2001 model

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: 2002 - Not Starting - Engine Turned Over Very Slowly
I have 2002 2.0 Jetta that I totaled. I found a 2000 2.0 Jetta that had no engine or tran. I swapped the entire wiring harness with the engine and trans from 2002 into 2000. I even swapped the doors. The cluster, steering column and all. I am still in the process of getting a few parts to finish it up. At this point, the only thing not hooked up is the headlights and the radiator. I hooked up a battery and tried to get it to turn over today. I turned the key to the on position and the cluster did not do anything. The engine turned over very slowly in the start position.
View 21 RepliesGolf IV / Jetta IV :: 2002 - Running Rough Then Stalled After Starting
So the Jetta started running rough, then stalled after starting. Couldn't drive it home so I had to tow it. Got to the house and read codes. It gave me P0135, P0171, and P0321. I researched and saw that the only code of these three whose symptoms included stalling was P0321, so I replaced the Crankshaft Position sensor. Tried starting it, and it wouldn't start at all. I kept at it for a while thinking it would catch, but after 5 minutes the battery was too low to crank. I tested the old crankshaft sensor, and had resistance of about 900 ohms, so it was in range. For giggles, I pulled the new one and checked it, also in range. I put one of them back in, and proceeded to scratch my head. Charged the battery up, and now not sure what to do. I need to do a very close hose inspection, but there are no obvious tears or breaks.
View 1 RepliesGolf IV / Jetta IV :: MK4 1.8t - Hard Time Starting When Temp Is Below Freezing
So I've had my car for 3 years now. I've done an emissions delete, replaced maf, diverter valve, coolant temp sensor, thermostat, timing belt kit, fuel filter, air filter, starter and battery (for another issue) have a 3" DP and replaced the O2 when I did that, valve cover gasket, spark plugs, tested another n75 in my car.
The problem: the car sometimes has a really hard time starting when it it way below freezing. When it's around cold, at freezing or under the car will start fine. But the problem starts after I back out of my driveway and take the clutch out and put on the gas. When I try to accelerate the car will not accelerate. You can have your foot pressed to the floor and the car will act as it's stalling out and sputter but it actually won't stall because the call will keep driving and then all of a sudden power will come back and it will take off. The situation can be remedied by either pushing the clutch in. The car will idle no mall or if when the car is sputtering I can tap the gas quickly an it will build up speed and the problem will go away.
Golf IV / Jetta IV :: VR6 Sounds Very Terrible When Starting On Cold Mornings
My 2000 jetta vr6 sounds very terrible when starting it in the morning after sitting overnight..
It only started when the weather has been getting colder it starts great in the warm and after I have been driving it recently.
It idles like crap, sounds like bogging and then eventually will get better once warmer
The other day got EPC light and traction control light and then that went away after a bit of driving now this morning check engine light ...
Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Idle At 1200 RPM Way Down To 800 When Starting And Engine Is Cold
I have a 1.8t jetta that has a weird idle issue when starting and engine is cold it like to idle at 1200 rpm then will eventually work its way down to 800 rpm
I have no cel codes and have looked for vacuum leaks (but may have missed one) ,but if i start the car and it idles at 1200 rpm then i shut it down and start it right after it will idle at 800 rpm as normal.
Its a 1.8t unitronic stage 1 stock everything except e type coils with plugs at .032, Also does not have much pull after 4000 rpm, not to worried but just may be part of the issue....
Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Clutch Chatter When Starting Off In First And Slippage In 5th Gear
I installed a new clutch, pressure plate, and flywheel at 154,000 and I'm now just over 155,000. I drove it very conservatively for at least 1,000 miles, and had no issues whatsoever.
Now, after sitting for a day, starting off in first gear, I'll get some clutch chatter. Outside of first starting out in 1st, every other gear is solid. And the 1st gear chatter tends to get better as the car is driven longer.
Secondly, it happened today, I'm getting what I thought I experienced before as clutch slippage in 5th gear: I'll lose acceleration as if the clutch is slipping, but the revs won't spike even if I tap the throttle. If I come off for a second and go back on, everything is fine. It doesn't make sense that's it's slipping as it's brand news.
It also seems to happen when it's been rainy or wet, but that could be all in my head.
