Ford - F150 :: 1977 - Clunk Sound When Put It In Reverse Or When Shifts To A Lower Gear
I have been fixing up my 77 F150 since I got it in January and it's really starting to look nice! I love this truck, but I have noticed a clunk sound when I put it in reverse and also a same if not similar sound when I'm driving and slow down. It makes a clunk sound when it shifts to a lower gear, (automatic). Now, I was thinking it was a U joint at some point and crawled under there and started to grab them and see if there was any play in any of the spots but found no play. I checked it a few times, thinking well it could be just the point the U joint stopped and that would explain no play but after a few times of crawling under I still never found any.
View 8 RepliesPassat (B5) :: 2001 - Shifts Into Reverse With A Hard Clunk
So a friend of mine has a 01 Passat 1.8 T (Automatic). He is having some reverse issues. It shifts into reverse with a hard clunk then the second you touch the gas it clunks into neutral. The odd part is if you put it in reverse and stay off the gas it will idle back in reverse... But the second you touch the gas nothing. I'm finding it hard to believe the transmission is gone because every other gear is beyond smooth (I mean like brand new car smooth).
View 4 RepliesGolf IV R32 :: Only One Clunk (Metal Sound) Almost Every Morning
After park for a couple of hours, I can hear a big clunk when I back off the car, It is a big metal sound as something was stressed and released suddenly.
I have no sound when driving the car, only ONE big clunk and the car needs to be park for a while. No sound when I start from a dead stop.
Here is what I have observed:
It does it when I'm in reverse and I drive out of my driveway. The sound appear most of the time when the 2 rear wheels pass over the mini bump between my driveway and the street and I start to turn the steering wheel.
I've tried turning the steering wheel before moving the car after it has been parked for a while and no sound. At the office, the parking is inclined a little bit so the front is lower. When I back off, sometime I heard the clunk. I don't remember having hear the sound when I start in first gear, even park after a while, only when I back off.
I have changed so far:
Suspension, Kw V2. Not a big drop. I can still see the whole tire . last month
Tyrollsport Caliper bushing. Last summer
Tyrollsport Subframe bushing and bolt, torque to spec + 1/4 turn. last month
ECS disc and pads last summer
Inner tie rod both side. last month
Control arm bushing. last month
Golf/GTI VI :: Clunk Sound On Take Off / Reverse From A Dead Stop
The car is manual, 95.000 KM. The problem is everytime i put the car in gear and start rolling, I hear a loud thump/clunk coming from the underside of the engine.
The only mods on the car are intake, a tune and a dog bone insert. The clanking is way more apparent when i'm in reverse. Whether i'm backing out of my uphill driveway or on a flat surface, EVERYTIME the car is at a dead stop and I give it throttle, something clanks...
My mechanic had lifted the car. He thought it might have been suspension, but he ruled that out. He believes that it is in fact the dog bone insert that is faulty. Upon further inspection, the red insert (from USP I believe) had cracked. although the insert was visibly broken (I've had it for barely 5000 km's, WTF) I'm not entirely sure that that is what's making the clunking sound because that sound was there from before I had put the dog bone insert in place.
Golf IV / Jetta IV :: 2005 - Clunk Sound When Going Into Gear
So I have a 05 mk4 golf 2.0 automatic. Ive noticed that when i take it from park to drive the car shakes and makes a huge clunk sound like I just got hit by something. Turns out it was a motor mount, I think they call it the dog bone cause its attached to the body & engine of the car. So it was replaced but the car still does it. But not as hard & not as much. Before when I revved the car it would kind of shake and dance. Since the replacement it parks still when I rev it. But that noise is still there. Someone told me it could be another mount or the torque converter.
View 2 RepliesGolf/GTI VI :: Clunk Sound When Went Over A Speed Bump In The Road
I just got a new Golf TDI. I have about 500 miles on it so far. I recently went over a speed bump in the road and the car made an awful clunk sound sort of like the strut reached the end of its length reach. The car continued to make this klunk sound when I'd go over smaller bumps just not as loud. What this could be and how to remedy it?
View 5 RepliesGolf/GTI VI :: Hard Clunk Sound When Hitting Bumps
I have 46k on stock suspension and lately I have been hearing a clunking sound when hitting bumps. It sounds like it is coming from the strut mounts and the ride has been harsh compared to when the car was newer. There isn't any bounciness and I thing the shocks/struts are fine. I push down on the body and no bounciness when I let up. Could my strut mounts be shot already?
View 6 RepliesHonda - Accord :: Noticeable Clunk When Trans Shifts Down Into Low Gear And Shudders
1998 accord 4 cyl auto, mostly on start up and when coming to a stop at a light it sounds like someone is under the floorpan hitting it with a hammer. maybe 5 or 6 hits. I've looked into the exhaust being loose and hitting but it's tight and has good clearance. could it be a broken motor mount letting the engine rock too much? next, SOMETIMES when the trans shifts down into low gear you get a very noticeable clunk and the car kind of shudders. planning on doing a trans drain and fill today. lastly the instrument cluster is a little strange. tach doesn't work at all, speedo is fine as is the gas guage but the temp is erratic. when the temp is acting up you can thump it with your finger and it will jump around.
View 9 RepliesSonata NF (2006-10) :: 2.4 Transmission - Clunk / Shake When Shifts And Downshift For No Apparent Reason
Well, After reading about the weird transmission issues these cars have...mine finally started to do it. It will clunk, shake the car when it shifts and downshift for no apparent reason. All of this does NOT happen all the time. The noises that come from my transmission do though.
I can have the car in Drive and have my foot on the brake and I can hear a grinding/low power steering fluid like sound that comes and goes. Its worse when I shift from Park to Reverse though. It sounds like air being released followed by a bunch of faint grinding noises.
Golf V R32 :: Clunk Sound Or Stutter When Push The Gas Pedal Down Midway Through The Turn
When i am driving more enthusiastically, i notice when i make, say, a 90 degree turn and then push the gas pedal down midway through the turn, i get a clunkish sound or a stutter. Its not loud and i can only feel it through the steering and through the car. It almost feels like it is shifting power to the rear, but i would think that it would do it smoother....
View 1 RepliesGolf IV / Jetta IV :: 2003 - Jerk Or Clunk Sound When Driving Down The Highway At About 65
Here is my new to me 03 Jetta 1.8T Wagon. This all started yesterday driving down the highway at about 65, I drove over a bump and there was what felt like a jerk. I lost the radio right away and when stepping on the accelerator it didn't seem to go over 3500rpm. I got a few miles into town taking it easy and it died as I pulled up to a stop sign. I was able to get a jump and get it running again.
This was the first jump of the day...When we popped the hood to jump it I noticed that the red wire coming off the positive battery terminal to the power block was frayed and corroded, so I cut the bad end off and stripped the wire to get a good connection. Left the car on a battery tender just to make sure the battery was charged and came back after a few hours and it started right up. Problem solved right?! Wrong...
Probably 10 miles down the road the same thing happens, a jerk or clunk sound, lost power and the call stalled out. Called family that was close by and tried to jump it again 'cause that worked the first time... Got a few miles down the road and it happened again!
Here's a picture of the gauge cluster and all the lights that lit up.
Long story short the car had basically no lights, power, for the windows/radio/turn signals/headlights etc... but was putting along at about 5 mph. I was out in the country and about 5 miles from home so I was just focused on getting it in my garage. It died again and a jump wouldn't even get it going the next time. I did some reading on my phone and it seems like the power block can be problematic, I took a picture of that because there is some obvious melted plastic on the large black wire.
I have a friend with a vag com, and he was able to come out and read the faults and then clear them and the car started right up just fine off a jump pack. We did get it home, but today I'm getting the same issues. I am trying to trace that black wire to its origin to see if there is corrosion or a loose connection there but I have no clue where else to start....
I start a new job on the 21st of July and this was meant to be my commuter as my truck gets terrible mileage...
Golf IV R32 :: Pfft Sound Going Over Bumps And Clunk On Passenger Side When Cornering To Right
FYI This is on the passenger side. Should I just replace the whole metal shaft? Can I just replace the rubber thing that is severed? If this is the wheel bearing do i need to get it repacked?
I am replacing the whole suspension because I started hearing a "pfft" sound going over bumps and sometimes a clunk on the passenger side when cornering to the right. is this severed leaking rubber thing the main cause of the clunk perhaps?
Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Front End Clunk Sound Occurs While Braking And Accelerating Over Bumps
A clunk sound coming from the front end. Drivers side and Passenger side. Not really a metal on metal sound. The problem started after coilover install. The sound occurs while braking and accelerating over bumps. So what I've replaced:
-Strut Mounts and Bearings
-Lower control arm bushings (R32 bushings)
-Drivers Side CV axle
What I've checked:
-Tie rod ends have no play
-Ball joints have no play.
-I have no sway bar, so not the sway bar bushings.
-Its not the axle hitting the frame.
Could possibly be the dog bone mount but when I installed the 1' motor mounts I saw no issue but could possibly be the bushing. feel the clunk in my foot as well.

Ford - Explorer :: 1999 - Loud Clunk / Thump Noise - Shifts Into Drive And Revs But Won't Move?
My boyfriend bought a 1999 ford explorer, he put about 2,000 miles on it in four months... I believe it now has roughly 110,000... Now the other day, he was pulling out and shifted from reverse to drive, we heard like a loud clunk/thump noise... It shifts into drive, and revs but won't move, it feels like neutral... If you shift to second, first, or reverse it's fine... Tranny fluid is good... O/D is always engaged...
View 3 RepliesGolf V R32 :: Clunk Sound When Reversing Into Parking Spot And Making Left Sharp Turn
I've had my R since late mid-summer, and one of the first things I noticed was this clunk sound when reversing into my parking spot and when making an aggressive sharp turn. Usually Left.
After reading multiple threads on this topic, I came to the conclusion that it was my sub-frame and the bolts need replacing. I got in a GB for the tyrol subframe stiffening kit after reading some good reviews/responses.
Today, on my day off, I finally went to a mechanic to get this installed. I just changed my mechanic, and this was my first visit to the guy hes had over 10 years experience at vw and just opened up his own shop. He did a great job, torqued the bolts to spec, made me drive around, do some pulls in 2nd and 3rd gear, reverse forward etc.
So hes about to pull the car back in to retorque and.... CLUNK...
Get in the car, reproduce the sound, get the car back up on the hoist... and at this point I'm expecting the worse. He takes my control arms off, checks the end links...
Brings the car down, and the clunking sound is louder than ever. It was the weathergaurd. When I turned on the wheel it was pulling it out and when I straightened the wheel it was popping it back into place, making a big clunk sound.
This was the exact sound that I was hearing, thinking it was my subframe. The bolts that came out were not stretched or bent out of shape like the ones you see in other reviews. They're actually in great shape. I'm glad I did the Tyrol kit and do not regret it, and I definitely feel a difference when I went into some aggressive turns.
Santa Fe (DM - 2013+) :: Rough Transmission Shifts Mostly Between 1st And 2nd Gear
Just experienced something new in my less than a week old 2.0T. This morning was the coldest day since buying it (-15c). I had the block heater plugged in and it started up well. Let the engine run for my usual 30-40 seconds before putting it into gear. Reversed well, but was a bit slow shifting after putting it into 1st.
For the first 5 minutes or so of the drive, the shift were pretty rough. Mostly the shift between 1st and 2nd gear. Things got better after that and were fine for the rest of my trip and also an hour later when I came home.
Is this just a case of a very cold transmission and fluid, or is it something else? I've never owned a car that had such rough shifting in cold weather. Sluggish shifts yes, but not violent like these were.
Buick - Regal :: Idles Rough And Little Hang-up When It Shifts
My son is about to purchase his first car. A 98 Buick Park Regal. Feels like it idles rough, and has a little hang-up when it shifts. Seller claims it's due to needing a transmission mount replaced. Does this sound viable?
View 4 RepliesOldsmobile - Cutlass :: Shifts Are Rough After Start Up And Put Car Into Gear
I'm driving an 87 v6 auto cutlass 130 000 km on it. Recently changed alternator and battery at mechanic.
After start up i put the car into gear but it wont shift into gear unless I give it a lot of gas and even when I do so it seems to have trouble keeping momentum /staying in gear. The shifts are rough. However after driving for a few minutes there are no issues at all.
It's been quite cold lately and I've noticed that if I let the car run for about 10-15 minutes before driving it's fine, no problems (although this seems a bit excessive).
Could this simply be an old car/cold weather issue or is there something else to consider?
Sonata I45 (YF - 2011+) :: Transmission Intermittently Shifts Very Rough And Jerky
Car intermittently shifts very rough and jerky. Just took on a long vacation trip and every AM when it was cold it shifted hard them smoothed out once warmed up. Got home and now it is doing it all the time. Dealer said do the trans flush...I did it and it made no difference. Is this a common problem with this model? Mileage is 39,800...not sure I want to buy this car at lease end.
