Noises - Xb - Scion :: Distinct Clunking Noise When Downshifting Into First Gear
Is it normal to experience a distinct clunking noise when downshifting into first gear? My dealer indicates this is normal but I don't want to risk damage to the tranny if it is not normal.
View 3 RepliesChrysler - 300c :: Transmission Makes A Distinct Clunking Sound When Downshifting
I have an '05 Chrysler 300C AWD with approximately 65k miles. The transmission makes a distinct clunking sound when downshifting and I am seeking advice about the cause and solution. For example, I live on a hill and when I slow down at the bottom of the hill the car will downshift and there is a clunking sound. This happens frequently when I am slowing down. In the past year the transmission quit 3x, in all cases the car would start and operate fine but would not go into gear - it would idle but nothing would happen when I put it in gear. The first two times the dealer kept the car for several days and made various adjustments and the car eventually worked again. The third time the Torque Converter was replaced, but the clunking noise continues.
View 3 RepliesLexus LS 2007+ :: When Downshifting From Second To First Click Or Clunk Sound
I have a 07 Ls460. When downshifting from second to first there is a click that is sometimes a clunk. Lexus has replaced the trans with no change. They have cleaned and lubricated rear suspension bolts and replaced the rear shocks and springs and the differential mount. Again, no change.
This started at about 80k and continues at 123k. They have checked motor mounts, transmission mount and repacked the driveshaft spline. When the car is lifted into the air and the weight is off the suspension the noise will go away for a few days.
This noise has also been heard occasionally when rolling off the gas between 20/30 mph and then reapplying throttle. Lexus mechanics and area reps are at a loss to diagnosis. I have driven a 2008 loaner and it had the same noise.
Passat (B5) :: Auto Trans Keep Downshifting From 5th To 4th While Going 65 - 70 Mph
I was driving to work this morning on the highway and noticed my car was running at 3500 RPMs while I'm going 65... kind of odd, right? drop it into tiptronic, shows fourth, I shift up to 5th, and drop it back into "drive." A few seconds later I laid off the accelerator as the road started going downhill, and the car downshifted to 4th while I'm going 65... Back to tiptronic, shift up to 5th again, then shift back over to Drive.
I then accelerated a little as the road started going up hill, and the car downshifted AGAIN for no reason while I'm doing 70!!!! I wasn't laying on it at all either, very grandpa-like driving.... I've never driven an automatic car before, so maybe this is normal - but it doesn't seem normal. Once I got off the highway the car drove fine, but i dunno whats up. It's a v6 with 107k on it....
Ford Excursion :: 2002 - Trans Rev Up 300 Rpm Before Downshifting Into Direct Drive?
I am having trans problems with my 2002 V10 excursion. When in overdrive, the trans will rev up 300 rpm before downshifting into direct drive. It never varies in rpm always exactly 300 rpm. It's not slipping and it seems to be an electrical problem. It has 190k on it but has only been used as a family vehicle and has never towed. It has 50k on fluid change.

2005 tundra sporadically misfires/sputters after slowing/downshifting (autotrans) to 2nd gear.....then when accelerator is kicked a bit the engine wants to spit/sputter like a misfire or flooding..... V8 engine by the way.

My car wouldn't turn start today at school The ignition would "click" continuously but the car wouldn't turn over. Battery is fully charger and didn't start with a jump either. Alternator issue??
Anyways, me and a buddy tried to push start it in 2nd gear a couple times with no luck... is this even possible with our cars?
Golf IV / Jetta IV :: 2002 - Starter Relay Click But Won't Start
About 2 weeks ago, my jetta decided it didn't want to start. Was getting symptoms of a bad ignition switch prior to this. Could get it to start one by jiggling the key. Replaced the ignition switch and now could hear the starter relay click but still no start. Yesterday, installed a reman starter and got it to start once. Could here the solenoid click when trying to start. Was reading on here or somewhere that it my be my power control relay, so took the top off to look at it and it was fine. Battery was down about 100 amps so it was replaced and still no start. Going to go see if my vag com will talk to to the ecu. Thinking about pulling the starter out and having it tested.
MK2 are so much easier.
Golf VI R :: Distinct Clunking During Engine Startup And Shutdown
Started happening yesterday. If I start the car I get 3 very distinct clunking sounds that I can also feel in both the clutch pedal and brake pedal. Then the car runs fine. No other issues I can find while driving, even driving a little aggressive. Then when I shut off the car I get the same clunking/shaking that I can feel in the pedals and hear. Sounds like something is broken but I can't figure out what. Only happens as the engine goes from 0 to idle or idle or 0.
View 1 RepliesGolf IV R32 :: Distinct Exhaust Leak Noise Coming From Manifold Area
Finally got the car started after over a year of acquiring parts and labor. Cylinder 5&6 had misfires due to faulty injector harnesses. That issue has resolved. But I am getting a pretty distinct exhaust leak noise coming from the manifold area and i cannot figure out where it is coming from. We smoke tested it and still can't find the leak.
Things we checked:
-Head to manifold (all nuts tight)
-Manifold to turbo (all nuts tight)
-Turbo to downpipe (2 vbands both tight)
-Wastegate (2bolt manifold to adapter tight and vband adapter to wastgate tight)
-(2) O2 sensor plugs on the maniold (tight)
-All turbo hardware (tight)
-manifold and downpipe have no cracks

Golf/GTI VII :: DSG Noise When Downshifting Through 1 / 2 And 3
I've been noticing this noise recently and I'm wondering if it's normal with the DSG. Almost a clicking that I can hear, mostly when downshifting through 1, 2 and 3. Not sure if I simply can't hear it above this due to road noise though. Threw the GoPro on a suction mount and got a bunch of clips from a short drive around the neighborhood.

Golf IV R32 :: Stuck In 3rd Gear - No Downshifting?
Yesterday I took the R out to grab some food on my lunch break. Didn't drive like a lunatic or anything, pulled into T-Bell parking lot and the car didn't want to downshift. Ok Weird. coasted in, parked, and put it in neutral and let out the clutch and the car stalled like it was still in gear. Go to leave and the car doesn't want to go into reverse. Thats when I realized something had gone seriously wrong.
Basically the car is stuck in 3rd gear. I can get the shifter to engage into reverse but the car tries to creep forward like I have the e-brake on. It doesn't go into any other gear but 3rd or 4th, but even when the shifter is in the 4th position its still in 3rd gear. Even when the shifter is in the neutral position its in 3rd gear. I limped the car home. I've looked into it a little bit and I'm leaning toward the 3/4 shift fork being broken. I know this won't be a cheap repair.
I think if it is the shift fork I will be upgrading the the one piece steel versions.
Golf V R32 :: Braking Malfunction When Downshifting
When I downshift while braking, especially in the lower gears, it feels like the brake pedal depresses further. And why does this happen?
Also, do people find you get cleaner downshifts if you have the gas pressed down a little, or do you downshift while braking, or just downshift without either?
Golf VI R :: Drivetrain Slack When Downshifting From 5th To 4th
Just noticed when driving home tonight that it feels as though there is some kind of slack in the drivetrain when shifting from 5th to 4th under load. I thought it might be the driveshaft is loose but it doesn't seem to happen from 3rd to 2nd or 4th to 3rd.I have always felt like the trans on the car felt weird (hard to change form 1st to 2nd under full load) but this is different...
View 2 RepliesGolf VI R :: Clutch Noise When Downshifting On Compression
I have a strange noise issue on the clutch since day 1. When on regular driving, if I'm decelerating on compression and downshifting from 4 to 3, and 3 to 2nd (like slowing down to stop at a red light), when a release the clutch slowly, at the friction point, I am hearing a scratch noise, like 2 metal parts are touching each other.
When totally depressed, no problem, when totally pressed no problem too. Only at the friction point. It's more noticeable when downshifting from 4 to 2.
Golf V R32 :: Jerky Downshifting In Sports Mode?
Is it common to have significantly harder downshifts in S-mode versus regular D? In D-mode the car very much feels like an "auto" through and through. However, when I am in Sport the downshifts are much, much rougher...very "jerky". I'm assuming this has something to do with rev-matching but...even when I'm just crusing in S-mode and coming to a slow stop it jerks between the gears.

Golf VI R :: Clunk While Downshifting From 3rd To 2nd After Clutch Replaced
I recently replaced my clutch and I've noticed that occasionally, while downshifting from 3rd to 2nd, I hear a clunk sound that comes from beneath the back seats. Especially if my throttle bliping is not aggressive enough. What this could be?
View 3 RepliesGolf/GTI VII :: Low RPM / Downshifting Hard And Mild Shaking At Startup
Just bought a 2015 golf TSI 4-door. First time VW buyer so Im not sure if these are normal or I should bring the car in to get checked.... At a dead stop when I accelerate the car seems to shake a little (until 2nd gear kicks in) then it stops shaking, Also, When Im in traffic and I go from dead stop to accelerate to slow down again, it feels like it is down shifting very hard.
View 6 RepliesGolf V R32 :: Downshifting Very Hard When Coming To A Slow Stop
I picked up an '08 R32 about two months ago and was having issues with the DSG and the dealership determined it was an issue with the mechatronic unit so they swapped it. That made a huge difference, but the downshifting is still very hard when coming to a slow stop (to the point where the car jumps), especially from 2nd to 1st gear. About half the time when I back out of a parking spot, then put the car in drive and start to give it gas, the car doesn't move for a few seconds as the RPM's build, then it slams into gear.
This all happens in drive (D). I haven't even used the other modes to know if it's happening there too. The dealership says they don't see any issues with it and there are no error codes and that there is nothing wrong with the car, but this is by far the worst transmission I've ever had in any car I've ever owned. I find it hard to believe that VW and Audi would put this in their higher end cars, so I can only assume there is something wrong with mine.
