Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: Shuddering / Cylinder 7 Misfire

My boss drives an '08 F-150 with a 5.4. The other week he had a horrid shuddering issue, misfire, and some known transmission issues so he took it to a shop. Supposedly the heads were pulled, heli-coiled, #7 coil was replaced, new plugs, trans rebuilt...a whole laundry list of stuff was done. He comes to me with complaints of a shudder in OD in low RPM primarily and a flashing check engine light with a #7 misfire code. I popped the hood to find no coil had been replaced (mechanics around here are REAL sketchy) so I told him to change up a new coil and I would throw it on to see if that fixes the issue.

Other than that, smooth idle and decent power with no shuddering except once in a while just coming into OD in low RPM...so around 40~ish and not throttling it hard. If he gets into it and blasts through the gears it has no shudder. I said the miss could be the whole issue, starting with the plugs and known misfire coil (#7) would be a good place to start.

A quick inspection in ~10 degree snow showed me the heads do not look like they were removed. The mechanic steam cleaned the engine, so looking for smudgy prints won't work. I know on older Fords the head gaskets stick out a little past the heads...do they on these too? He is questioning if the engine was even touched, and rightfully so in my opinion. Pulling the plugs would be the next step, but I need heat and tools for that.

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: Low Compression And Misfire On Cylinder 2

I sea Foamed the truck today. I will be pulling my heads most likely and am doing a few things beforehand just in case. History: low compression and misfire on #2. Have changed plugs and swapped out cops. Paper against exhaust pipe sucks in and pops against the pipe intermittently. Seems like intake valve.

Anyways, poured in a whole damn bottle through the brake vacuum line. The engine sputtered a bit but never stalled. I saw almost no smoke after a whole bottle!! I thought with 156000 miles it would smoke like mad. I have taken very good care of this truck and changed oil every 3 to 5 with synthetic 5-20 since new. Could it be that clean???

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: 2007 - Cylinder 3 Misfire Code

I know there is a tun of info on the spark plug problem on the f-150. Here is the problem I have and I don't know where else to look.

Cylinder #3 misfires

1. swapped coil with #2 cylinder and still throws #3 misfire code.
2. Changed the plug on #3 and still the same code #3 misfire.

Where to look next?

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: Code P0301 - Misfire Cylinder 1

This happened xmas shopping with the wife. Started misfiring on the highway,took the 1st exit to find a garage as I am 20kms from home. The vibrations were worse at stop, but made it to a garage. They gave me the p0301 misfire cylinder 1, said they don't touch 5.4 plugs, told me to go to ford 2kms down the road. NICE. 4 in the pm, FORD dealer worse case scenario. Nope gave me a loaner told me come back at 930am. Truck was just waiting for an injector when I arrived. Plug & coil were good injector was shot,changed the fuel filter & oil change.

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: Cylinder 8 Misfire Code Randomly

Having a misfire problem I can't track down. First issue was random cylinder 8 misfire code. Checked everything, nothing obvious. Cleared code, problem stopped and engine ran fine. Then came back, cylinder 8 misfire. Swapped coil with #5 but problem did not return. Since I assumed it would come back, I went ahead and bought Accell supercoils and new Motorcraft plugs and replaced them all (120k miles, no broken plugs ). Truck ran great on the test drive! Then it sits overnight and bam, cylinder 5 misfire as soon as I start it next morning. Then after messing with it I get cylinder 5 bad coil (code 355 I think). Put one of the Ford factory coils back back on #5, no change and still misfiring. New plug, new coil on all cylinders... Why did it move from #8 to #5? If it was an in injector, seems it would still be #8 since I did not mess with those.

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: Code PO306 Which Is Misfire On Cylinder 6

I have a 2004 f150 with the 5.4 and was wondering what would cause a spark plug to do this. Its on cylinder 6 and i have pulled the codes off of the truck before and one was PO306 which is misfire and can't remember other one but it was saying system was too rich. I have only has this spark plug in maybe 500 miles. but was getting a misfire code before that. Do you think it could be a coil or the injector?

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: Rough Idle Cylinder 3 Misfire

2004 Ford F150 5.4 Triton 3V Vin5.....

How this started, Drove through a lot of water as our City was in a flood on my way home and and the truck started running rough and got worse over time, I can now barely get to 40 mph as it starts to ping and sputter with no power.. the truck has been parked and not driven while in the shape it's in.

The truck keeps giving me error code P0303 Cylinder 3 misfire detected, P0174 System too lean (Bank 2) and at times another error P0300 saying multiple cylinder misfires detected.

After clearing the codes, I got new codes stating Misfire on Cylinder 2, 3, 4, 6. System too rich (Bank 1) System too lean (Bank 2)
Cleared the codes again and I'm back to Cylinder 3 misfire and System too lean (Bank 2)

What I have done so far... All repairs with in a few days...

1. Changed all spark plugs.
2. Changed all Coil Packs.
3. Changed number 3 fuel Injector.
4. Changed the Oil and Filter. (no water in the oil)
5. Changed the MAP Sensor.
6. Changed Bank 2 O2 Sensor 1 and 2.
7. Loosen the Catalytic Converter on the drivers side to re-leave back pressure thinking the Cat was plugged, still loss of power. I also drilled a small hole in the exhaust at my lowest point to see if it had water in it and it does not.

Checked for vacuum leaks using starting fluid around the intake manifold, no change in idle.. I also checked to make sure the vacuum line was still connected on the back of the intake manifold, I have found nothing leaking.

I also had cleaned the throttle body and changed the throttle position sensor.

Repairs within the last 6 months or less...

8. Replace passenger side cat.
9. Replaced both Bank 1 OS Sensors
9. Replaced Timing chains, Gears, Guides, Guide Tensioners, Oil Pump and pickup tube, Water Pump.
Cam Phasers are fine.

And number 3 coil is getting spark I changed the Ignition Coil again thinking maybe another bad pack.
Still #3 misfire and System too lean (Bank 2).

I am at a loss and not sure what to try, except for a compression test on cylinder 3 but I honestly don't think it's compression or a burnt valve.

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: Code P0308 Read Out Misfire On Cylinder 8

Started as I was warming up the truck,a slight vibration/shudder. First thing that came to mind was F150. Torqued words of wisdom that it might come back, I had a p0301 before. Had no CEL, so decided to drive it to see if it got worse. Turned onto the main road and on came the CEL. Pulled into my FORD dealer, told him about my problem. Code P0308 misfire on #8cylinder was the read out, COP was done and the plug. 40 min of labor. She's even quieter than when #1 got changed.

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: 2006 - Stumble When Accelerating Around 45 MPH - Misfire On Cylinder 5

i just picked up an 06 f150 with 5.4l 4x4 xlt package. Love the truck as it is my 1st Ford HOWEVER..... the truck is running super rough at idle and keep getting code for cylinder 5 misfire and bank 2 lean (which i am assuming is from cyl 5). here is what i have done so far...

New Coil packs
New spark plugs
New fuel module
New fuel injector on cyl 5

Still has a "stumble" when accelerating around 45 mph and shows code for cyl 5 misfire then will then throw code for bank 2 lean.

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: 2006 - Cylinder Misfire And Random Miss On Startup

We've got a 2006 F150 with a 5.4 in it. One of the new kids was told to change the spark plugs, then when I went to start the truck the next day it was missing bad. Plugged in the Ford IDS, number 7 cylinder is dead. Only codes are for that cylinder misfire, and random miss on startup. So, I double checked the kids work and it was all fine. Tried putting a new plug in, didn't work. Moved the coil to a different cylinder to see if the miss would jump, stayed on number 7.

Used a noid light to verify COP harness was working, and it was. Put a new coil on it anyway since I had one, still missing. Used noid light to verify signal going to injector for the cylinder. Signal was good, replaced the injector for the cylinder. Still misfiring. Ran a compression test and the cylinder has good compression. The threads for the plug are fine, not cross threaded or torn out. The only thing I can think is that the PCM has gone bad in a way that its firing the injector/COP, but doing so at the wrong time some how.

Every other cylinder is running fine, O2 sensors fine. PCM isn't trimming anything back to account for anything, and if it was it would do it to multiple cylinders to keep the engine balanced. Cant think of any more tests, and I don't believe there is anyway that the airflow could be restricted to only 1 cylinder, but I could be wrong. Wanna try and solve this to keep from sending it to the dealer.

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: Loss Of Power - Code P0306 / Misfire On Cylinder 6

Having 3 new codes coming up. P0306-misfire on cylinder 6, p0158, p2272. Use my truck as a daily driver for work. Driving along before 80km/h is not to bad but can still feel a little loss of power. If i step down on gas the truck has no power and sounds like maybe cat converter is plugged. If truck is pushed to limit she will make it to her 4000 rpm and will change her gears. So i'm just glad its not tranny.

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: 2005 - Check Engine Light Came On - Cylinder 5 Misfire

I have a 2005 f150 with 96,000 miles. Long story short, last August I was headed to the mountains going up a steep long hill and the engine light come on. once i was over the pass the light went off. During my 4 wheelin' trip it never came back on until I was headed home and going over another pass and then it stayed on for a couple of days. I had it checked and it was a cylinder 5 misfire. I did some research and found that replacing the coil cover might fix the problem and if not the spark plugs would need to be changed.

I changed the coil cover, problems solved... until I headed to the mountains. light came on and then eventually went off later that day. I didnt think much of it. then a few months later i was headed to the mountains again and the light came on in the same place on the steep incline hill. I. took it back to the shop, same reading. I decided it was time to replace the spark plugs anyways so I would invest. I have new plugs and everything is good however, I had no plans to go to the mountains in the near future. Now, a few months later I headed to the mountains and crossed my fingers it would not come on but it did.

I've done the research again and it seemed like the coil cover and spark plugs are usually the cause of the problem...however I have changed mine. The light is now off again. I don't understand what is triggering the problem and what is really happening and if it is safe to keep taking to the mountains with this happening. I did notice that everything was fine at 60MPH but once i hit the hill and steeped on the gas to go 65 and hit 4-5RMP that is when the check engine light came on...

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: 2005 - Cylinder 5 Misfire - Spark Plug Replacement?

I am getting a cylinder 5 misfire and this has been a "on again off again" situation since last August. I took it around to a few places and the general solution was to get new spark plugs. After doing a bit more research I was advised to change the coil cover. I did that and it fixed the problem. Then about 4 months later the light came on again. I happened to change the air filter and the light went off. I though great, problem solved! not so much, when i went to the mountains the other day the light came back on. I did my research again and I have decided to get the plugs changed. Its a 2005 f150 with 94,500 miles on it.

I am told its time to change them regardless. I started calling around and getting quotes and have been told by multiple shops that ford made the plugs in my truck in a bad way. They have been telling me to change them and breaking them is a 50/50 shot. THEN, when they quote me they charge a rate to replace them plus the plugs themself. If they happen to break one then the customer pays for the new one. Do the plugs would really break that easy and should I plan on replacing some of them?

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: Rough Idle / P0012 - Misfire Codes Associated With Bank 1 And Cylinder 3

5.4 3v. my last few weeks have not made me a fan. Here are the details:

I bought a 2008 F150 XL 5.4 3v with a cam phaser knock. Have done other timing jobs in past with no trouble so I was not too afraid to tackle this one. famous last words...opened the motor (shout out to the passenger side valve cover and its designer here) and found semi damaged roller follower on driver side. Worn cam lobe on the corresponding lobe and a loose chain on passenger side. proceeded to :

Change all timing components: phasers, chains, tensioners crank sprocket, all applicable bolts and BOTH cams as well as all lash adjusters and roller followers. most looked fine in fact all really did with a bit of wear on a few roller followers but only one bad one. engine didn't look to bad pretty clean.

Double and triple checked my timing chains and it was spot on. dark link on spot on crank, two dark links on the L and R dead on. put it back together. oh yes, changed all plugs with motorcraft ones, didn't even break one. did not change vct solenoids because I falsely assumed I could change the later easily if needed. they looked ok. screens intact etc... silly me for not realizing how kind Ford was in 2007 and later to necessitate removal of valve cover. I was reading a previous one on the how tos and assumed later models would be the same since it was the same sensor...

Cranked truck ran great. I mean perfect. sounded perfect. ran like a scalded cat. till it got to hot idle then it started doing its thing. rattle shake till you revved it. ran fine just wouldn't hot idle fine especially in reverse or under slight load. replaced driver side vct since ford only had one and I started on the easy side ordered the other one waiting for it. seemed to improve dramatically meanwhile I am driving this truck to test it. I drove it to work 50 miles each way and it ran great.

After a few trips it popped the P0420 light, seemed to run ok, cleared it watched it wouldn't come back. O2 sensor did seem to imply a bad cat on bank 1 since it seemed sensor two was mimicking sensor one and not staying stead like the other bank. still ran fine,

So I decided to check back pressure on the cat. I pulled sensor one out of bank one (really a joyously tight squeeze in there) hooked up my gauge and got 0 back pressure. revved it and all nothing. hooked sensor back up pulled truck out of shop and it commenced to running like crap. I mean bad. running worse than before I got it. Popping P0012 code continuously, and tons of misfire codes associated with bank 1 ..cyl 3 etc.. I tried swapping coils, pulled coils and checked spark with a tester and firing away looks like tons of good spark.

Now the weird part is : looks like bank one is dead. I can unhook any coil pack and/or injector and it runs the same and sounds like it is missing. if I unhook one off of bank 2 it almost dies or does. so bank 2 seems to be running fine. it will start and run but sounds like it missing sets flashing check engine light and backfires and stalls like crazy. I even second guessed my pressure gauge and unhooked exhaust manifold from pipe and it sounds even prettier when it backfires out of there but no change. I pulled cam sensors and cleaned it again and even tried swapping them since they looked identical but no change so I put them back.

Now I can only surmise that I am out of time somehow? or I have a gremlin perhaps? I like working on cars (usually) but this one is getting old. how do I verify what is wrong. if it is timing related how do I verify that now definitively once my marks moved I really cant figure out how to tell if it is in time? Since it has all new parts and they all ran beautifully till now. could it possibly be the vct solenoid doing all this? I plan on changing it when it comes in but surely it cant cause this many problems.. I unhooked it no change, and it does it at a cold idle and any rpm. really runs worse at idle but bad at any rpm.

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: Power Loss / Check Engine Light / Misfire On Cylinder 5 And 6

I have a 2008 FX2 5.4L F150. Recently it began to lose power on a friend driving it out of town. He got a check engine light then it just progressively became unable to produce power. It ran but he got down to 10 mph before he could get to a firestone. I got it to a local Ford dealer and they say i need a new engine. They gave me codes for cam sensor and timing and #5 and #6 misfire. (344, 345)

No oil in radiator, no water in oil. The crazy thing is it runs like the day i bought it in Park. But once in gear it begins to cough and then eventually shudders and dies. I haven't changed plugs ever. I know... At about 75 miles it began to idle rough at times and in reverse. But once I revved up it went away.

I replaced both cam sensors but no luck. Today i put it on a tow truck to get a second opinion from a local engine shop. I actually backed it down my driveway, and pulled up to the tow truck with no issues. weird...
