Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: Surging At Light Throttle And Low RPM
I have a '01 7.3 Excursion 2WD. 220,000 miles. It has a 4" exhaust, K&N filter and Edge Reprogrammer set on emission illegal. It gets the best fuel economy and moves out very well for 8000 lbs. Recently, I started to feel a surge while making light throttle acceleration. For example, round a corner at 35 and try to gently resume the 45 Speed limit. It begins to accelerate and then cuts out or surges, sometimes several times. If I lay into it, it responds fine. I have serviced the air filter, the fuel filter, use synthetic Amsoil. I did notice a slight improvement after the service. Less frequent cutting out or surging. I also was in an area where Bio diesel is readily available. I added almost a full tank of B10 Bio and it seemed to work. Changed the fuel filter just after.
It has been cold for NC. This morning it was +14 when I started the truck. It seemed to finally catch on maybe 2 cylinders with lots o' white/ blue smoke. It cleared out in a few minutes and seemed to be hitting on all 8, or at least 7. Once it warmed up, it's fine. But I had the codes p0672, p0674, p0676, p0678. My question is: Is there a common thread in the fact that it appears that I lost 4 glow plugs on the same bank?
One arm chair quarter back's response to the surging, is that the under valve cover injector wiring harness may be breaking down, especially since the truck has 220,000 and the valve covers have never been off. I have a fresh turbo with the good wheel sitting ready. I have just been too lazy to swap it out. Would a fresh set of injectors be a wise choice, when I swap over?
Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: 2002 4.2L - Surging Bad At Idle
I am having great difficulty trying to figure out why my truck is surging so bad in park or in gear at idle. I have to mat the brake while in drive to prevent me from ramming the car in front of me. It all started when I replaced the air filter. Everything I've read leads me to the EGR valve, but that has been bypassed.

When I first bought my 2001 f150 a few mos ago there were no problems but I did notice once in a while it would give one little shudder when id accelerate. now all the sudden it shudders after around 20 mph all the way up to whatever the speed limit is. Then it smooths right out until I have to accelerate again. if I punch the gas and kick it down it will clear up but then it feels more like a surging going on.
I had the cruise set at 70 the other day and I had to slow down to merge to around 50 and when I hit resume it really started shaking bad and the service engine soon light flashed on and off for a few minutes then went off and hasn't came back on again. I took it to advance auto and no codes showed up. they said its probably the torque converter but after reading multiple forums I am not so sure now.
Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: 2002 - Idle Surging When Cold
My 2002 F150 (50,000 miles) 4.2 is surging when cold. I just got done replacing the pcv valve. I noticed it was running better so I cleared the service engine light, but now is surging when the engine is cold. I live in FL so it does not get that cold like up north. The following codes were the ones that the pcu put out, P1131, P1115, P0174 and P0171. I am leaning towards changing the IAC valve and maybe the oxygen sensors.

My truck is a 2000 model 2wd with the 5.4 engine. It has about 234000 miles on it. It suddenly started surging last night rpm jumping around approximately 4-600rpms each time. I noticed that once I got up around 50mph it would smooth out...

View 5 RepliesFord Transmission :: 2006 Expedition - Surging Very Slightly While Cruising Under Very Low Throttle
My 2006 expedition surges very slightly while cruising under very low throttle. Usually most noticeable at 60-65 mph with no headwind.
Took it in and had my mechanic check it out. He confirmed the slight surge and said it felt like the torque converter was locking and unlocking. No codes or pending codes were found related to the power train.
Abs light is on for a bad rear wheel speed sensor. Code for right rear. Checking the sensor showed 3 ohms for right, 5 ohms left ( left is less than a year old on a new wheel bearing.)
Initial thought was the bad sensor is giving bad input confusing the pcm/tcm. But the condition remains with the sensor unplugged.
Driving down the road watching the tach, it does appear that the converter is not staying locked. Condition goes away with more throttle. Motor runs smoothly otherwise with no indications of misfire. Plugs have 50k miles on them, as does the transmission fluid. Fluid is red and smells fine. Never gotten hotter than 210 by the gauge in the pressure port.
Why would it lock/unlock at very low throttle, but lock tight with more throttle? Tps flaking out? Throttle body motor getting twitchy? Can I pull my popup to the hills this weekend?
Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: Clunks Around At Low Throttle Especially Around 50 - 55 MPH
I am having a strange issue with the transmission in my 02 F150 with the 5.4, but it only happens when it`s cold outside and the truck is warm, typically after shutting off the truck and starting it back up (like if I stop at the store for something).
Basically, it clunks around at low throttle, especially around 50-55 MPH. Sometimes, it will act strange as I roll to a start, but typically it`s fine up until there. If I hit the gas it shifts just fine, but it acts up at constant speed/throttle.
I am hoping that its a sensor or something that's confused vs. needing a rebuild or new torque converter.
Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: Throttle Body Cleaning
I need to clean my throttle body on my '97 F-150 and it has a label saying not to clean directly. Is it still safe to use TB cleaner and to go ahead and clean it? It needs done but how would I go about it.
View 6 RepliesFord F-150 (2009-2014) :: Erratic Throttle / Surging When Moving From A Dead Stop Through Low Speeds
I have a 2009 F150 4x4, XLT crew 6.5' bed, 5.4 engine. The truck has a very strange erratic throttle behavior from a dead stop through low speeds, shifting seems very strange at low speeds too.
Dealer tried re-flashing the computer, but that didn't fix it. They talk about some valve that sounds to me like it's similar to an EGR function, but I cant remember what he called this valve. He explained the issue as exhaust gasses that are to be recirculated and burned, but the valve is opening at the wrong time, or stuck open or something so it feeds the fire so to speak.
Does any of this sound typical or common? Is this something that's hopefully easier to do than a spark plug change on a 5.4?
Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: 4x4 Making A Squealing Noise When Hit The Throttle
I have a 1997 f150 with the 4.6l triton that just started to make a squealing noise. I have replaced a couple of pulleys that were bad but that did not get rid of the problem. It only makes the noise when I give it some gas and it is coming from around the fan clutch area.
View 5 RepliesFord F-150 - 1997-2003 :: Throttle Body Whirring Noise
The Throttle Body on my 2001, 4.6 L is making a strange whirring noise, when you puy your hand on the intake pipe, you can feel a slight vibration. The Truck idles and runs okay, with no codes. Giving it a little gas and the noise goes away. The last thing I did was clean the IAC with Gum Out Carb cleaner, the second or third time I've done this over many years, with no problems. I'm a little perplexed at the cause.
View 6 RepliesFord F-150 - 1997-2003 :: 2001 - Miss At Low RPM - Light Throttle
My 01 Super Crew 5.4l is missing at light throttle. Cruise control on flat hwy, no miss, slight incline, starts missing. Put my foot into it and either it stops missing or it covers it up where I don't notice it. No codes set at this point. It's got about 135k on it and for all I know it may have had the original plugs in it so I figured I'd change them. Changed the plugs, still misses. Shortly a code set, something about the EGR sensor (it's got another name but I forget what it is at 1:30am). I found I had broken a hose while changing plugs, fixed it, no more code, still misses.
When I sent my GF up to get the non-existent codes checked the parts guy sold her some Lucas fuel system cleaner. I'm figuring a COP going out but the cleaner pretty much completely fixed the miss, till that tank of gas was gone. Few tanks later and it's back again as bad as ever. I bought some seafoam as I've had good luck with that in the past. It almost completely fixes the miss but I get a rare 'bump'. What do I need to look at next? Can it be the fuel filter? I'd think no because I'd figure it'd be even worse at greater throttle opening. Injector? How do I check them?
Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: Hesitation As The Throttle Is Pressed During Driving
2003 Ford F150 XLT - Truck hesitates (or bucks) as the throttle is pressed. Not from a stop though. It starts / runs fine, but no matter how how fast, what gear, hot or cold, it feels like the fuel cuts out for 1/2 second. Also it is not a specific point in the throttle motion. It does it when it is halfway, 3/4 or fully depressed, but is not consistent. It does happen more frequently now than two weeks ago. I am not getting a check engine light.

Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: 2002 - Throttle Feathering While Cruising
I just had an exhaust manifold replaced on my F-150. It has the small 8 cyl.. While the manifold was leaking, the truck of course ran like crap.....spitting, sputtering, barfing, etc.
Now that the manifold work has been done, the truck runs pretty well, except for some intermittent increase in throttle (not by me) when cruising at highway speeds. This is comparable to the "feathering" of the throttle that you would do when checking for engine noises.
Hard to explain without feeling dopey, but kind of a mild ruuum, ruuum, ruuum out of nowhere when I'm cruising along. I drive a 5 hr. trip every weekend, and it will do this about every 10-20 minutes.
Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: Started As EGR / Throttle Body Clean
I'm usually over in the EX forum but today was working on my brothers 1998 F150 - V8 4.6L. Had the EGR code P0401 and due to FTE I found the problem took the throttle body off and found it was definitely plugged. One of the bolts was really loose and came off way to easily. Didn't realize until cleaning why... Now I drilled 8 studs out of my aluminum EX heads but this one has me pondering how I'm going to clamp this thing down and center a bit..
1st pic - ports WOW - guessing this was the problem ...
2nd pic - bigger issue ...
