Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: 2002 - Oil Pan Gasket Leaking?
I brought my 2002 F150 into the shop because of a small oil leak. I thought it was coming from a leak in the gasket of the oil pan which the shop confirmed. I changed the oil and put in the Lucas oil product that can seal leaks in gaskets (sometimes). This didn't work. I continue to have a small oil drip, more annoying than anything. I am not having to add oil continuously.
To change the gasket the shop basically quoted me $1,200 because on this engine size you have to drop the engine etc.
I am looking for alternative solutions, recommendations, etc. I can live with the leak but would prefer to fix.
Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: 2002 - Head Gasket Is Leaking Oil
My wife has a 2002 F-150 King Ranch 5.4l. Recently I noticed a oil smell and I had the mechanic take a look. He said the head gasket is leaking oil. Not a bad leak but it is leaking. The truck has 160k miles on it. I can't decide what to do...
What generally happens with a head oil leak? Will the engine crater or just keep leaking? My plan was to buy my wife a different truck and I would keep the truck, but I don't wont to keep it if the head leak is terminal for the engine...
Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: 2002 - Trans Cooling Lines To Radiator Leaking?
2002 4.6 SC with towing package... Transmission cooling lines to radiator leaking. Replacing them? How long does it take, can it be done while working on the ground? Any tricks or problems to look out for?
View 3 RepliesFord F-150 - 1997-2003 :: 2002 - Power Steering Cooler Line Leaking
I have 2002 F150 5.4L gas 4X4 Lariat FX4. Last winter when it got to -30C here in Manitoba one of the lines near the power steering cooler began to leak. I had just bought this truck and upon investigating found that the original line had been replaced and reattached with hose clamps. I had this "farmer fix" redone but then this winter when it hit -30C it blew apart. Obviously something happened to this line before I got it, so I am curious if there is an issue with these power steering cooler lines when it gets really cold. Should I just get factory lines installed and hope for the best?

2010 Prius IV, Purchased July '13 with 133k. Now 175k. Other than drivers rear hub & brake recall, never an issue...until now. It the past 3 weeks, it has "went through" 3.5 quarts of oil. NO SIGNS of a leak (no puddles on floor and the "padding" on the pan side of the access door is dry). Doesn't smoke at all. The oil dipstick isn't rusted out.
View 19 RepliesFord Ranger / B-Series :: 1989 - Signs Of Water Leaking Through The Gasket
My 89 2.9 has gotten water in the oil. One year ago I pulled this engine to replace the crank shaft (defective Ford design 1/2 thust bearing created a nasty grove in the crank allowing it to slide back and forth1/4 inch), new bearings, oil pump, timming chain, all seals and gaskets (not head gasket). The engine had great compression so I didn't do any thing more. Now I have a leak. No oil in water. NO compression leaking off into the water jacket. No "steam" coming from the exhaust. I've replace the intake manifold gasket. It showed signs of water leaking through the gasket, actually bubbles of water trapped inside, so I hoped this was it, but I still have water in the oil. I have now removed the intake and driver side head (head gasket shows now sign of leaking). No signs of water in cylinders. Is it possible to have a warped intake manifold? I have removed it twice, and I was told that some V6's need to be slowly removed VIA de-torque the bolts. I didn't do it the first two times I removed it, today I did. I plan to remove the passenger side head tomorrow. I will take the intake down and have it tested for warping. I have read many stories on this web site of the heads getting cracks, but they all seem to be in or near the valves, I assume that allows water to be burned off as a steam engine OR compression being pumped back into the water jacket.
Is there any other source of the leak that I'm missing? Is it possibly my intake? OR should I go ahead and replace the heads?
Ford 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel :: Bad Rings On One Piston / Signs Of Leaking
How my rings burnt up on one cylinder causing damage to my cylinder wall. My question is this. What could have caused this? I pulled the motor and tore it down. Cylinder wall is chewed up a bit so I was going to have the machine shop sleeve it. Is there another component that I should look at while it's apart? Also the corresponding freeze plug on the same cylinder was showing signs of leaking. I'm thinking that is related to the extreme heat that cylinder experienced.

View 5 RepliesFord F-150 - 1997-2003 :: Losing Oil - Dipstick Was Almost Bone Dry?
So in my 2003 F150 I have been losing small amounts of oil. I changed my oil about 2 months ago, and after I checked it yesterday the dip stick was almost bone dry. There are no external leaks but I noticed that I keep getting oil coming out of my PCV valve into my throttle body (the other end of that valve is connected to my valve cover). Is that normal or what? Where else could my oil be going? Cracked head?
View 3 RepliesFord F-150 - 1997-2003 :: Losing Power - Misfiring And Chugging
I have a 1997 f150 lariat 4.6, at some point i started losing power, so of course I had my friend come by and check all the mechanics under neath the hood and besides needing caps and rotors all seemed well under there, so twice I've put it on a computer and it needs and o2 sensor, I've already checked my Cadillac coverter , and dropped and replaced my gas tank twice, I ended up having to replace a shock, it does run better when i put heat through it for a short time.
I've been checking my antifreeze and I am not losing none, I also did regular maintenance to it to figuring it was a fowled plug but still no good , so whats next ? coils ? I didn't replace my plug wires but I checked them all and they looked to be in good condition and I have a transmission filter kit to change that out I don't believe its been done ever ..
Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: Losing Coolant / No Heat Coming From Vents
About mid-October I noticed when it as real cold out and I had the heat running whenever I would come to a stop I noticed there is very little to no heat coming from the vents, despite the engine being warm and running at operating temps. At the time I was working for a shop and I asked one of the mechanics what the problem was. He said that it was the radiator not having enough coolant.
Turns out when we pulled the cap the coolant res, was just about bone dry. So we added in about a gallon or so of coolant with the truck running and sure enough at idle the heat was back.
Fast forward to the last couple of weeks and when I am sitting at idle again same thing happens. So somehow the engine is losing coolant. Its not ending up in the oil (no white on the dipstick) and there is not a coolant leak. As it sits there is 255,300 miles on the truck now. 1999 5.4L F150....
Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: 2001 - Surges In Hot Weather And Losing Power
2001 F150! It does this weird little surge, burping and farting away...but only in ambient heat. The engine never gets hot, it never over heats. What have we done? A full tuneup with new plugs and boots, oil change, new air filter, gas filter. It did it again...took it back in and had the fuel pressure checked, fuel injectors are fine...it can't be the fuel pump, it runs great unless it is hot weather. It has twice blown the P0171 system lean bank 1 code and has gone away after the tuneup and again after the new o2 sensor. It runs great, except in hot weather, starts surging and losing power...
View 9 RepliesFord F-150 - 1997-2003 :: Losing Power On Hills - Accelerating Very Poorly?
Truck started just fine this morning, was driving for about 15 minutes and it started to lose power going up a gradual incline. I didn't even think of it really and so I just pushed the pedal in a bit and no increase in power, in fact it bogged down. I let up and went back to the gas and same thing. This was barely pressing the pedal down. I got to the top of the incline and started back down a bit and gained speed (dropped from 55-60 to 40 at the crest) up to 55, hit level ground and started to lose power again, and it felt for the life of me like the truck was fighting for every ounce of power it could get. Everytime I would step on it it would bog down again. I nursed it to an appointment I had, and when I got done with that I started back home. Same thing. It would accelerate from a stop up to 30 (I've always been a laid back accelerater) and when I would read 35-45 it would start to dog again. I got it back home.
2nd issue: On the way home I had to stop at a highway crossing on a slight inline. There the truck started to shudder a bit. and if I would just touch the gas pedal it would bog down. I played with it a bit and got it to rev a bit. put it in reverse got away from the intersection and let it idle a bit when It died. started right back up, no problem. would play with the accelerator and same thing. I finally got it to rev a bit and 2 footed it back home slipping from neutral to drive.
Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: F250 Losing Coolant But No Steam From Exhaust
I just bought a 97 F250 with a 5.8 in it. Im loosing coolant somewhere. Did a pressure test it checked out fine, no steam from exhaust, no coolant in oil. Nothing on the ground, it making me nuts. Truck has 182000 miles on it but its clean, no rust and runs to good. I don't know much about Fords but someone told me it could be air pockets. It just got a new radiator b4 I bought it.

View 6 RepliesFord F-150 - 1997-2003 :: 4.2L V6 Hard To Start / Occasionally Running Rough And Losing Power
I recently bought a 4.2L V6 2003 F150 with only 20,350 original miles. This car belonged to an older gent who barely used it, then passed on about 3 years ago, and truck sat around barely used by anyone. When I picked it up I ran some Seafoam through the first two gas tanks as it was occasionally running rough and losing power. Since then truck has been running incredibly smooth, but in the last few days it is getting harder to start. If I pumped it two or three times it would start OK, but today I have had to pump it while cranking it to get it to start. ( the pumping may have nothing to do with it starting)
I am replacing the fuel filter in the next couple of days, as any accumulated junk that was in the tank or lines is now probably in the filter, but it seems that a badly clogged filter would also give me some problems running, and it runs really smooth once it starts. I get a pressure gauge, (I understand the rails have a pressure test port) what pressures should I expect at what moments?

Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: Running Rough / Losing Power And Trans Shifted Hard - EGR Valve Stuck
I have a 1992 F-150 straight 6. Several days ago it started running rough and losing power and the trans shifted hard.

I have looked for vacuum leaks and found nothing. Is it possible the EGR valve is stuck?
Ford A/C :: 1997 E350 - Signs Of Impending Compressor Failure
I'm in the process of replacing the engine in my 97 E-350 Chateau 6.8 v10. The a/c system was in need of attention before my engine exploded at 143,000 miles. The a/c system at that time was showing signs of impending compressor failure. Many parts of my a/c system were removed to facilitate engine swap so it is completely evacuated. I'm replacing the compressor, accumulator, both expansion valves and flushing the rest of the components outside of the vehicle.
I have purchased all the replacement part but have questions on the proper sequences of events replacing the PAG 46 into the system. My a/c system calls for 13oz of oil and 64oz coolant and I did not measure any oil that was lost during removal. I have access to a vacuum pump and a/c gauges. I have been searching the internet yet haven't found a site that deals specifically with my circumstances. I'm eager to learn.
Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: U-Joint Cap Came Off - Drain Pan Leaking?
I am currently in a gas station parking lot sitting in my truck on top of a puddle of trans fluid because my u joint caps came off goin 80 down the highway. When i pulled over i noticed the transmission was leaking. I put putted along goin about 5 miles an hour trying to keep the vibrations to a minimum till i came across the next gas station. After further inspection, of course, i saw the caps off of the u joints, but i notice a leak that seens to be coming from my drain pan, like the gasket isnt sealing off. Ive been sitting here for about 2 hours waiting on the tow truck and have made a puddle about 4-5 wide. Why I am losing trans fluid. I don't understand what the u joints busting out has to do with the transmission.
