Ford Wiring/Electrical :: 1988 F150 - Speedometer Not Working

I got my first truck today and it's a 1988 Ford F-150 and it runs great! The only issue is that the speedometer doesn't work and I won't be able to register it until it does. I was wondering what I can try out to maybe fix the issue and if not, how I would replace it. Every other gauge works, it's just the speedometer that isn't. The needle doesn't move at all it just sits at a 0 all the time.

Ford Fuel System :: 1988 F150 - Cuts Out Under Load?

My 88 F150 (300 six, 5 speed, dual tanks, 176,000 miles). The truck has the low pressure fuel pumps in the tanks and the high pressure pump on the frame rail setup. Truck starts fine, but cuts out severely under acceleration for the first 30 seconds of driving. After that I only notice the problem when applying a lot of throttle (does not cut out under gradual acceleration) or climbing steeper hills. If I kill it for a few minutes and then take off again the problem is back for the first 30 seconds or so. I have replaced all the tune-up type stuff (all filters, plugs & wires, dist. cap & rotor, ignition coil, o2 sensor, cleaned throttle body, replaced IAC valve, numerous sensors). Timing is dead on at 10 deg. BTDC with SPOUT unplugged. My FPR was bad so I also replaced that. Condition exists regardless of which fuel tank I am using (no problems with tank selector).

Getting no KOEO codes, but getting KOER code 41 and plugs do seem to show a lean condition possibly. I'm still averaging around 16 MPG since this became a real problem about 3 months ago.

I removed the bowl from the reservoir between the tanks and the high pressure pump on the frame. No filter in there, but it was clean with no gunk or sediment found. I removed the line from the inlet side of the high pressure pump and found that while cranking the engine I have fuel flowing freely (same amount of flow regardless of which tank I've switched to). The flow was steady, but not extremely strong. If I understand right the in-tank pumps are not designed to provide much pressure? Below is what I found at the schrader valve:

key on, engine off - high pressure pumps runs for about 1 second, brings gauge up to 48 psi

idle, FPR connected - 40 psi

idle FPR disconnected - 52 psi

revving throttle with FPR connected - 46 psi maximum

Connector, where fuel pump relay plugs in, seems to be clean and not corroded at all.

Ford - F150 :: 1988 - Hard Shift From First To Second When Driving In Rear-wheel Drive Mode

I have a 1988 F150 which is in beautiful shape. My father in law had it since 1989 and had "babied that truck" according to him. So it's running great, has a mere 92,000 miles, is an automatic with 4X4 with manual shifter to put it into 4X4 or Low 4X4. Here's the questions: When driving in rear-wheel drive mode (I never drive it on the street in 4X4 - we don't get snow here in SC) it has developed a hard shift from first to second. It feels like it bumps when shifting. When empty it shifts at about 3200 RPM at average acceleration, which I think is a little high. Does RPM even matter when the shift occurs? Can the tranny be adjusted to shift at a lower RPM? Is my tranny about to go kerplunk? The transmission fluid was a tad low so I topped it off but that didn't seem to work.

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: Raw Fuel Smell Through Air Conditioner Ducts At Random Times

My wife has a 08 F-150 LIMITED and at random times gets a raw fuel smell through the air conditioner ducts. It will happen after we fill it up and it will happen @ a 1/2 tank. No smell under the hood and no visible leaks from anywhere. Pretty important issue to me.

Ford Aerostar :: Intake Ducts Making Loud Moan When Slowing Down To A Stop Or At Low Speeds

Lately, when slowing down to a stop, or very slow speeds, the intake ducts make a very loud moan. It sounds like a muted horn really. Sometimes, I can put it in park, and it'll be making the noise. Open the hood, and it feels like it is coming from the plastic intake tube. When it does this, the motor likely stalls out, and needs to be restarted.

Another issue, we cruise with it at roughly 100 kph. It works good, that 4.0 has gobs of power, but when cruising, sometimes it will very randomly work bad, just have a misfire hissy fit! It doesn't affect the cruising, but it just works funny.

Its a 1997 Ford Aerostar with the 4.0 OHV, and the E- 4wd with the Dana TC28 transfer case.

Prius (2010-12) :: Odd Smell From Ducts After Using Vent After A/C Off

In my 2010, when I use the A/C, the air comes out cool and dry. When I turn the A/C off, and just run the vent, I notice a few things.

1) The air warms up (duh!)
2) The air is more humid (duh!)
3) The air has a mustier, stale smell to it.

When I just run the vent (and don't run A/C prior) I don't notice the odor, but if I then run the A/C for a bit and then run the vent, the musty/stale smell returns.

I've noticed it and tend to ignore it. My wife noticed it and pointed it out to me, and it prevents me from cycling the A/C off as the odor fills the cabin.

Ford :: 2000 - Cleaning Steering Box Sector Shaft

2000 Crown Victoria, 172K I recently tore into the car's steering components because just about all of them were pretty heavily worn out (including one brand-new tie rod that already busted its boot). I got everything out fairly easily except for the pitman arm: That thing broke THREE pullers trying to yank it off the sector shaft. I finally had to get an angle grinder and cut the thing off, which I did by slicing away metal on both sides until I was able to pry it off. It looks like that despite being as careful as I possibly could be, I nicked the sector shaft in a couple of spots. One is a small spot at the bottom of the threaded part for the pitman arm nut, which is making it tough to get the nut to bite. Another is at the top where the pitman arm engages the sector shaft splines. Two questions: - Is there a really large tap-and-die set somewhere then I can use to clean up the threads? Never seen one this size before. Failing that, will using a small file be enough to deburr the threads and allow the nut to engage? - Will the nicks on the splines cause trouble with getting the new pitman arm seated properly?

Ford Excursion :: No Brake Lights After Cleaning Engine Bay

Cleaned up the engine bay today and now my brake lights don't work. They may have not worked before this though, I'm not sure... was backing into my driveway and noticed the reflection in the window that they were not on.

Reverse lights, tail lights, and turn signals all work fine, just the 3rd brake light and the lower brake lights are inop. Checked all the fuses that are related to the brakes and they are all intact.

Is there anything under the hood that could have gotten wet and would cause the brake lights to suddenly stop working? I had a P0306 and a bit of a rought idle, but some contact cleaner and driving it for a bit cleared it up. I drove it for a bit but the brake light problem still remains.

I just spoke to my wife who drives the Excursion 95% of the time and she said that they haven't been working for some time now and she just neglected to tell me. I guess maybe it's the brake switch off of the pedal... what should I look for on that?

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: When Should Do Throttle Body Cleaning

read a few posts over the years relating to dirty throttle body, but never understood them. At 60000 miles, should this be attempted by the average guy or just leave it alone if it aint broke?

Any pics addressing where is it, what makes it dirty, how to open it, what to clean it with and how often as preventive maintenance?

Ford F-150 (2009-2014) :: 2011 - Cleaning Air Ventilation System?

I recently picked up a really clean 2011 F150. Once thing I notice is the brief smell of manure at startup. I bought a ventilation cleaning kit which has a hose to snake up the drain hose. Little did I know how much of a PITA this was going to be. Best I can see, the drain is behind the heat mat on the firewall and not easy to get to.

Questions - Is there another way into the system? Since there isn't a cabin filter (first odd discovery for a modern vehicle), can I get in through the intake side?

Ford - Taurus :: 2005 - Can Cleaning A Mass Air Flow Decrease Mileage?

I had a check engine light on my 2005 Ford Taurus and my mechanic suggested cleaning the mass air flow. Afterwards, the light was off and the car seemed to drive fine ( it was driving fine even with the check engine light on) But my mileage dropped drastically. On the freeway it went all the way down to 10mpg! Right now around town it is fluctuating a bit, but around 14mpg. Should I have the mechanic check for a loose wire or something not connected properly? Or just replace the darn mass air flow?

Ford 6.7L Power Stroke Diesel :: Exhaust Filter Cleaning Notification?

I recently bought a certified used 2012 F-350 a couple of weeks ago. I was reading the diesel insert in the owners manual and came across the exaust filter cleaning notification. I have already put almost 3000 miles on the truck and have yet to see the notification. My brother has a 2013 and said that his comes on every week. I don't know what the previous owner did to the truck, if anything. It is very clean and everything else is stock. I am averaging over 19 mpg combines and it runs great. This is my first diesel truck and I am certain that I will never go back to gas.

Ford 6.7L Power Stroke Diesel :: Cleaning Exhaust Filter Message

I got a 2 second "cleaning exhaust filter message" on my drive home tonight in my new truck with about 500km. I completed my drive and pulled off the highway into my yard. I don't know if it had finished cleaning yet but I unloaded the bed and then got back in the truck and drove another mile or two until the fuel economy was normal normal again.

The reason I did this was the underside of the truck was clicking and pinging as it cooled. You could smell the heat. Is it necessary to drive to complete this cycle? Or could I have just pulled in and shut it off. I'm sure it would finish on the highway in the morning. Other then the fuel economy increasing I couldn't tell anything else was going on.

Ford 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel :: Cleaning Injector Bore Cups?

Have the Alliant 6.0 specific bore brush kit on the way, however was curious how others use the brushes? My concern in whilst cleaning the bores, debris might somehow work it's way up into the fuel passages with the up and down action, risking said debris lodging in those tiny screens of any adjacent injectors which is the last line of defense against debris. Am I missing something? Correct me if I am wrong but with the injectors out those passages are just open to the world, correct?

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: Cleaning Insulation From Engine Compartment?

My hood insulation is ripped up and as one of those projects I never got around to. It has shredded and pieces are down in the valley and in the engine compartment. Some of it smells now because it has gotten hot. I would like to clean it out and replace the pad. What is the best way for me to clean it. Do I take it to a truck detailing place or just spray it with gunk and take it to a car wash. Also if the latter is the answer then does it matter if the truck is hot. Currently the truck is 30 miles from any car wash so I'm worried about washing it hot. I just realized though I have my pressure washer with me so I could use that. Recommendations?
